Barbra Streisand is a singer in the true sense of the word. Not one that needs flashy getups and over produced videos to cover up their lack of talent. Her amazing vocal chords is all she needs. This type of analysis only serves to show how many young people today know so little about the music of previous generations and, precisely because of this, they don't have enough culture to understand and know how to appreciate its value. The commentator does not notice the magnificent arrangement and orchestration, he does not consider the lyrics of the song that contain a universal message, or the beautiful melody. The unique beauty of Barbra's voice and perfect technique also doesn't stand out to him, or even the precise use of vocal dynamics that goes from low to high volume with incredible ease, and the soulful way in which Barbra puts feeling into every word of the song. Yes, before analyzing one of the greatest singers of all times, it is necessary to learn a lot about music.
When you watch West Side Story, there is a meaning in this song with that crazy ending of a movie that we all know.. To me, this song is about a happy but tragic ending (where lovers know their expected fate (dying) and are choosing to go out happily. They are essentially living in it in the end, where they are in heaven. I am not talking about the 2021 remake, but the 1957 original of the beloved classic. So, a couple quick suggestions. Initially, you probably shouldn't have a preconception regarding what you think someone should sound like before listening. What you listen to is what they sound like. Secondly, I thought the comparison between Karen Carpenter (incredible voice within a certain range) as the precursor to Streisand was way off. The Carpenters career spanned a decade at most, while Streisand began at a very early age (13 I think) and still has a career. Similar to thinking Atlanta (as an example) has a long and glorious history, until compared to Paris. Apples and Oranges
This isn’t a typical entertainment music video from the MTV mold that did pop, rock, metal and other genres of the time. Streisand was a serious theatrical performer who also had a lot of tv specials and live concerts. This was done in 1985 by her record company to help promote her album titled The Broadway Album and was directed by respected director William Friedkin. Their intent was to stress the political themes behind the song, written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. Most of her “ music videos” were to emulate seeing her live in a serious concert and were not aimed at teenagers. The song is one of the most well-loved from the musical & film “West Side Story” and is the dream of lovers wishing for a time and place that is free of hatred, violence, anger and violence.
I'm always dumbfounded when someone begins a review of a performer by saying "i don't really know who this is..." There are literally 10's of thousands of Streisand videos on You Tube spanning performances from 1961 through her record-grossing 2016 concert tour and her 2019 min-tour.
Not sure what the point of this reaction was. Suggestion - Either inform yourself so that the commentary doesn't just sound ignorant and pointless or maybe only upload reactions when you've decided you have something to say.

In terms of being incredulous about people watching videos like this 'back in the day', you could argue it was a time when the music was more important than dressed up videos of today that disguise mediocre music.
I'm literally laughing out loud. Ummm honestly i think music of today sucks but in actuality there is a lot of skill I'm sure I just don't understand it as easily as i would this era.
That song came from her Broadway album. That song was from a Broadway show. It was one of the most famous songs of all time. Barbara has music from many genres. She has sung with Barry Gibb, The Bee Gees, Neil Diamond, Bryan Adams, Donna Summer, Kris Kristopherson, Celine Dion, etc... She's a Grammy, Tony, and Academy award winner. Even celine dion was a super fan of hers.
West Side Story....that song was Maria and Tony fantasizing about a place somewhere they can live in love. The juxtaposition of the flashback with the families being reunited after the War in Europe. Her nuanced references to equality, super awesome.
I loved and have loved this song…it’s about people who don’t fit into regular society and feel that there is no place for them. As a gay man and many with AIDS when this came out it was our mantra that we had a place in this world and she was going to take us there…The voice sores we really felt her continent to those who are different…she always felt out side of society too, that makes it all the more powerful. One last thing the intro is long so that you are taken you into this place not of the earth and into the song. Have you ever felt that you were outside of society? You are right this was state of the art at the time paving the way for what was to come…a bit of history if you will.
Everybody and their mother has recorded this song PRIOR to Barbra...not many have attempted it since. And, it is the closing of an album that takes you on a journey of the Broadway theater. Their were no "radio play hits" on the album, but as a whole, it was a smash both critically and sales wise.
The Somewhere video was directed by William Friedkin who directed The French Connection and The Exorcist. In response to another comment, the video WAS played a lot on tv, when they used to play music videos 24/7. Also, the album from which this single came, Barbra’s The Broadway Album, went to # 1 and won Barbra the Grammy for Best Female Vocalist.
It has to be that long to show that an ethereal song by an ethereal being is about to be sang on earth. If you just stopped fidgeting how long the intro was, you may have noticed that it took you out of this world and back again. The intro and the fading music plunged you deep in the abyss. It's a very well composed song and music. Barbra is a diva and all her songs are intense.
@@jaybrielakoi7747 Karen Carpenter is only 8 years younger than Barbra. of course she's also dead for almost 40 years Barbra is still very much alive and doing well.
David Foster produced this song, and about 11 years ago he engineered a virtual duet for Barbra to sing it with then- 10 year old Jackie Evancho . The title of that video on RUclips is ‘Jackie Evancho - Somewhere (from Dream With Me In Concert)’. The interplay between the two of them was very seamless and incredible, well worth taking a look!
Yes, the intro was long, the video quality certainly isn’t what it is today, but Barbra Streisand’s voice is exquisite. Try listening to Evergreen...so beautiful....
This is homage to people suffering from aids and a place for gay people..there’s a place for us(lgbt people) she wants to take us from the pain and lead us to a safe place….this was timeless and classic. At the time it was our anthem…people don’t sing like this anymore with no electronics, just pure voice…inspiring. She wanted this song to be otherworldly…
That’s from her Broadway album in the 80’s. All songs in that album were her personal choice, meaning to say, various great songs from a musical or Broadway show older than us. Well, if U do have musical/Broadway background, then, it’s easier for you to understand the album and the songs.
Watch and listen to the incredible music Barbra Streisand has created successfully from the early 1960s to the present, 2020s. She is a is and recognized as one the best singers ever. She is a singer, actress, film director, producer, philanthropist, activist for civil rights and health care, and more. Criticizing the length of a beautiful video that expresses her great humanity in addition her beautiful voice, is a naive response to who she is and her great accomplishments and musicianship and talent. Watch listen research and learn and be inspired by Barbra Streisand.
Interesting to hear your reaction since you were born at the time of her peak career. Times have changed. Visuals have changed. I guess I always think everyone will be wowed by her voice. But she set the standard for almost every female vocalist of any credibility since this time. You're just used to a different style of performer and singing style. But one reaction I have. Learn to recognized a good singer no matter what prejudices you may have. You miss a lot if you dont and want to know about good music.
By the time Karen had her first major hit, Barbra had already won the Grammy, Emmy, Tony, Golden Globe and Oscar. 2nd to Karen? No. I adore Karen, but in no way in her lifetime did her career come within miles of Barbra’s success. When it comes to reacting to Barbra it would serve you greatly to be less pompous and more humble For, what you don’t know about Barbra and her legendary career can fill the Atlantic and Pacific.

Regarding point #2. What do you expect people to be watching in 1985 only 3 years after the birth of the modern personal computer? Chip-based electronics had just been invented. Computer based video editing on a powerful MAC didnt exist because there was no MAC or the software. I can tell you what they WEREN"T watching back then. They weren't watching all the marginal young "talent" of today who have their inability to hit notes fixed with Autotune and their inability to play instruments in synch with others in the studio fixed with Pro Tools.
Only vocalist in history to chart an album at #1 in every decade since the 60s. Her talent is immense, in acting and directing too, but that voice... timeless, incomparable. As far as the intro to this song... one would probably have to ask David Foster.
MTV launched in 1981 and since I was 23 years old at the time it was awesome but this was not an MTV video. Streisand is without a doubt the greatest female vocalist period but she started on Broadway and then ventured into movie musicals winning an Oscar for Funny Girl. She had a string of pop hits in the 70's so I suggest that you seek those out and even had a disco type hit with Donna Summers called Enough is Enough.
This song is from the musical West Side Story. The original was released in Oct. 1961 her remake was released in 1985. I was born in 70 so this song is 9 years older than me and you do not look 60, lol.
you know absolutely no artistic eye....this video was incredible from start to finish....it talks people who need and want to be taken away from their current circumstances into a place of peace and love and understanding.....listen to the lyrics..watch the video....you just totally did not get it.....
You're right. But it's a reaction video and I'm giving you initial thoughts. There are a lot more qualified individuals out there if you're looking for expertise on this time era. I'm going through giving reactions as I'm trying to catch up with t he decades before me.
I’m just going to say you need a music education.. It’s great you listened to this but to be clear this song from ‘West Side Story’ which was a stage musical 1957 (then a movie 1961) by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim (I’m going to assume you don’t know who they are and have no idea their enormous contribution to music). As you obviously don’t know her incredible contribution. And finally, that you were comparing her to Karen Carpenter is hilarious. The Carpenters became popular in the 1970’s. Barbra Streisand has been a Broadway star and recording artist and movie star since 1964. I’m gonna suggest you do a little more research on what you’re playing so you have a bit of understanding before you just rattle off anything that makes clear you haven’t a clue what you’re talking about. With that said, kudos to you for listening to one of the greatest singing voices that has ever lived.
Like others said here, comparing Karen Carpenter and Barbra Streisand is hard because their music genres, styles, and voices are so completely different. Karen’s career was cut short, and she has grown in popularity posthumously. Streisand has had a long and widely varied career. Karen was a pop star, Streisand was and still is to a degree, a true mega star. Check out is video of young new star Streisand singing with mega star Judy Garland on her show for a great example of both women’s styles which were much more similar: ruclips.net/video/zFVxX3RtyhQ/видео.html
Inarguably [imo] the GOAT. You haven't even scratched the surface of this amazing artist... Barbra doesn't just sing a song, she interprets lyrics, tells a story, and gives a song four-dimensional life. Hope you cover another of her's. Here's the closing number of her iteration [1976] of "A Star Is Born," after her husband and the love of her life commits suicide. Would love your reaction video on this iconic film moment. ruclips.net/video/ptWOynBBxgQ/видео.html
You might want to research the artist ahead so you can do them justice. Song was from the musical West Side Story and she was before, during, and after Karen Carpenter. She is very prolific having a minimum of 1 number one album per decade for 6 consecutive decades(14 total I think?)
Instead of saying you don't know much about Streisand, how about spending 10 minutes on the internet LEARNING ABOUT HER, do some homework. Karen Carpenter came along WELL after Barbra Streisand. Karen had a very nice voice absolutely. But Barbara is much more talented vocally.
OK Jaybriel, for Barbra throttled way back, check out "Papa Can You Hear Me" from the movie Yentl (in which Barbra starred, BTW) ...and incidentally if you get into any Celine Dion, "If I Were You" is that same sort of throttled-back vibe from her. Both are wonderful.
Other great Barbra Streisand songs include Woman in Love, Evergreen, People, Guilty with Barry Gibb, Enough is Enough with Donna Summer and Tell Him with Celine Dion.
1) Dont do any more reviews! 2) Get some knowledge about singing and music 3) Learn how to pronounce the persons name you are reviewing. Its Strei sand! Most of her “ music videos” were to emulate seeing her live in a serious concert and were not aimed at teenagers.
The song is one of the most well-loved from the musical & film “West Side Story” and is the dream of lovers wishing for a time and place that is free of hatred, violence, anger and violence.
She will touch your soul...
It's good stuff.
I'm always dumbfounded when someone begins a review of a performer by saying "i don't really know who this is..." There are literally 10's of thousands of Streisand videos on You Tube spanning performances from 1961 through her record-grossing 2016 concert tour and her 2019 min-tour.
The best female singer ever and you worry about the quality of the video?
Not sure what the point of this reaction was. Suggestion - Either inform yourself so that the commentary doesn't just sound ignorant and pointless or maybe only upload reactions when you've decided you have something to say.
Thanks for your opinion.
Barbra isn't about the visuals. Who cares really. It's about the voice.
Sir-------------" West Side Story" was composed in 1955, brought to the stage in 1957-----------and it'sd the end song of the play ! of course it HAS to be a huge ending. --------------The film was made in '61------------YOU need to see it, to appreciate why she sang it like she did. Unless YOU know that-----------I find your denigrating comments ignorant. ------------WolfSky9 74 y/o
Agreed
Very powerful voice, fantastic range.... can evoke all kinds of emotions. Music artist, actress. ❤️
You are right this was state of the art at the time paving the way for what was to come…a bit of history if you will.
what a brilliant entertaining reaction video to watch. Great insight, really. Need more like that to understand the world
She’s the best in my opinion
The intro and the instrumental accompaniment won a Grammy
Really?
Everybody and their mother has recorded this song PRIOR to Barbra...not many have attempted it since. And, it is the closing of an album that takes you on a journey of the Broadway theater. Their were no "radio play hits" on the album, but as a whole, it was a smash both critically and sales wise.
A legend. Egot. Best female vocalist of all time. Even whitney.
I think most young people's image of Barbra Streisand is Mrs. Focker.
Lol, bwuahhh ha ha. Actually .....now that you mention it you’re super correct.
You're talking to a clueless kid. Don't waste your time. Hopefully his mom slapped him after she read his silly comments.
Are you know about music???? Do you know who she is????? Are you know about vocal talent ????? Who you are????
That recording is PERFECT!!!
She’s way older than Karen Carpenter. She was the best
Really she's older. I need to go and look at their ages.
@@jaybrielakoi7747 Karen Carpenter is only 8 years younger than Barbra. of course she's also dead for almost 40 years Barbra is still very much alive and doing well.
I have never heard this before. It's great!
The only artist to have six Gold Records in six separate decades
David Foster produced this song, and about 11 years ago he engineered a virtual duet for Barbra to sing it with then- 10 year old Jackie Evancho . The title of that video on RUclips is ‘Jackie Evancho - Somewhere (from Dream With Me In Concert)’. The interplay between the two of them was very seamless and incredible, well worth taking a look!
The singer of singers!!!!!!!
Yes, the intro was long, the video quality certainly isn’t what it is today, but Barbra Streisand’s voice is exquisite. Try listening to Evergreen...so beautiful....
intro is a blast from the past.
her voice from outta space man
You said “tell me if I’m wrong.” OK- You’re wrong!!!
I’ll bet you’re one of those guys that say they don’t like the Beatles, just to be cool
Barbra Streisand is one of the greatest. Please also listen to the live version of One Moment in Time by Whitney Houston at the 1989 Grammy Awards.
Can you post the link to make sure i get the right Video.

OMG.
@Jaybriel Akoi ...OMG....are you living under a rock...lol. Barbra Streisand is the worlds greatest singer ever !!!
Not my type of music at all but for you not recognise the talent at all in your reaction is a crime. Her talent transcends any genre of music.
Streisand is PEERLESS. The BEST. Period.
It's sad you critized such a Great Song of inclusion the message everyone is special and should be included millions of people will disagree with you you just made fun of the Greatest Singer on planet Earth she has a Real voice and makes Great Music the music of your new younger generation can not compare She has been making Great songs and music for decades the music now can never compare try to find a singer to do the song the Main Event her voice is incredible no singer now could do it you offended millions of Barbra Streisand fans with your smirk know it all attitude do not judge her on one song look for more like Evergreen .and listen to her Broadway Album 🌅🌅🌅🌅
They could have shave a little off the intro and outtro but her incredible voice was well worth the wait in this song.
Legend she gives me goosebumps
Only vocalist in history to chart an album at #1 in every decade since the 60s. Her talent is immense, in acting and directing too, but that voice... timeless, incomparable. As far as the intro to this song... one would probably have to ask David Foster.
You should watch Little Jackie Evancho do a mashup with Barbara with this song. It's amazing!!
Not even vlosr mtv came 20 yrs later you are not 45 chill out she is the best no one can sing like this woman no one
If she ever does another recording you could ask her to tone it down a bit.
Her beautiful voice was so wasted on you - I’m honestly shocked
Yeah second to Karen carpenter that would never happen ! I’m sure Karen carpenter would have appreciated that RIP!
Thanks for the comment.
Leave, Girl
you know absolutely no artistic eye....this video was incredible from start to finish....it talks people who need and want to be taken away from their current circumstances into a place of peace and love and understanding.....listen to the lyrics..watch the video....you just totally did not get it.....
Do you know of any singer that sings this amazing. I think you don’t enough about her to comment or critic her singing.

Dont crap on barbra
The intro was long because you are used to having things instantly. Blight of the young these days.
You might want to research the artist ahead so you can do them justice. Song was from the musical West Side Story and she was before, during, and after Karen Carpenter. She is very prolific having a minimum of 1 number one album per decade for 6 consecutive decades(14 total I think?)
She was before the carpenters
Oh .... oh ok I get it.
I'm doing women in love- ruclips.net/video/hQLGCX8D-1Y/видео.html is this the right one?
@@jaybrielakoi7747 yes, there's no video for this song.
@@jaybrielakoi7747 The way we were is another great song by her.
My heart belongs to me , songbird, prisoner, or any song off of greatest hits volume 2
"Woman in Love" was written by Barry & Robin Gibb. :)
1) Dont do any more reviews!
2) Get some knowledge about singing and music
3) Learn how to pronounce the persons name you are reviewing. Its Strei sand! NOT Strei zand!!
4) Go back and listen to how long she holds that last note and see if you can even hit that note or begin to hold it that long! Do you even know what note that is?
Pitiful! You dont need a channel.
Agree 100%
Agree 200%
SIR--------------This version of the song from " West Side Story" , written by Stephen Sondheim & Leonard Berndstein, was arranged / orchestrated / produced, by David Foster. ---------------PLEASE---------Listen to Ms Streisand do " A Piece Of Sky", from the ending of her '81 film, " Yentyl". ------------THAT'S her masterwork., IMO. ------------------------WolfSky9, 74 y/o
you are way off base. This lady is one of the great dramatic singers of all time. Do yourself a favor and listen to some of her early albums.
I click on this for a reaction of the vocal prowess. So what about the intro...zero relevance to her musicianship. I wouldn't be interested in watching anything else from you since you've not done your research. Her work has been around for decades and you have seemed to minimize it by offering nothing of use. I'm sure you are a kind person but you've made it easy not to click and subscribe.
