I love living in Korea and would like to attend big events like protests in Korea, even if it's just to support friends. However, after doing a little research, I learned why the Korean government forbids foreigners from attending political rallies. What do you all think?

The Korean constitution guarantees rights to 국민. Are 국민 people who live here or does that only include people who were born here with Korean ancestry? It's hard to say. I don't think immigration was considered at the time the constitution was written. Maybe I'm wrong. I'd like to know more for sure.

Only people who are given citizenship have the right to vote... including those of forgien orgin.
But the main reason why we discourage forgieners us because we dont want foregin influence, especially after Japan occupation that ended in 1945...but also becuase of N.K.
Another reason for it is becuasr it could cause international problem.
Lastly, its not a good thing for the gov to reveil foul incidents that happen.
In 5.18 incident at Gwangju, Korea, it was the foregin reporter who uncovered the massacre of civilians who participated in protests by the military.
He risked even his life to uncover it. Theres a movie bout it called [A Taxi driver /택시 운전사] (smuggled him out of Gwangju)
And the first president declaired martial law twice, massacred civilians, and got impeached after tring to run for his third term.

There are RUclips videos of Chinese international students participating in the protest. There are Chinese students on stage making speeches against the president of KOREA. And there was a vlog of a Chinese woman who flew to Korea to participate in the protest. I mean.. They blend in perfectly, especially if they spoke Korean. (RUclips erased my last comment.) 😂 I always wonder what would happen if Koreans were caught protesting in one of anti state protests in China. It seems like there is no active law to punish Chinese from intervening Korean politics, which I find very problematic. (Hope this comment doesn't get erased this time.)

I have seen several articles about Chinese participation in political activities in democratic countries. It seems that they are even supporting the creation of Chinese politicians. In Australia, a book titled "Silent Invasion" was published a few years ago to warn about the current situation. There are now over 2 million Chinese in Korea, and Koreans do not seem to be concerned about it. There will eventually be Chinese politicians.

Don’t push the martial law issue into a political dichotomy. South Korea’s democracy has a bloody history. And the families of the young people who died fighting for democracy are still alive. So, if you’re not familiar with Korean politics, I hope you’ll be careful with your words. A madman declared martial law, but once again, politicians who have shed blood for the citizens and democracy prevented it. Except for the 11% of slaves who praise dictatorship, everyone-especially the overwhelming majority of citizens and young people-stood against martial law and wanted to bring down this regime. I hope you don’t make the mistake of applying the political issues of your country’s left and right directly to another nation. Every country has its own unique political situation and sentiment. As a foreigner, your job is simply to observe, experience, and feel. Don’t misunderstand the issue of those crazy old men who praise martial law as a left-right dichotomy.

Roughly 90% of Korean supports the impeachment, while 10% doesn't. The people belong to the 10% gather at Gwanghwamun. They're politically right, more precisely far right. Their demographic traits include (1) Old people generally over 60 who suffer from trauma the Korean war left. To them, McCarthyism works great, and (2) Young and old people who have affiliation with the American style evangelical church that often have combative far-right ideology. The main leader of the protest in the 10% side is a pastor, Jeon. As the US helped South Korea during the Korean war, and the evangelical church is from the US, to them, the US flag is a must symbolic item to have. If you come across a group of protestors holding the US flags, then they're far-righted ones.

@@francoismarc3 this is absolutely not factual. there are larger number of people gathered at Gwanghwamun which you may have seen already. What you are claiming here is what the liberal media wants you to believe. I myself know various group of people who support the conservative party. Yes there are large organizing groups associated with churches but not everyone is Christian. Same as the U.S. republican party being supported by churches. There is nothing wrong with this. There are growing number of 20s and 30s turning away from the liberal and choosing the conservative party. They are mainly disappointed of the left party's failed economic reform & foreign affair.
Now about the US flag. It's a symbolism expressing our tie with the U.S. as our ally. It also highlights what the conservatives stand against. Judge for yourself. This is what the left opposition party wrote on the 1st impeachment motion- "In addition, under the name of so-called value diplomacy, it(Yoon's gov.) ignores geopolitical balance, antagonizes North Korea, China, and Russia, insists on a strange Japan-centered foreign policy, and by carrying out policies such as appointing people with ties to Japan to key government positions, causing a crisis, national security and the duty to protect the people have been abandoned." The values of the so called Korean 'left' and 'right' are quite different from the values of the US 'left' and 'right', and most countries are like that the more different the culture is. I think its best for you to understand that these Korean parties are best understood not based on this arbitrary 'left right' name. For example the Korean 'right' looks down on Korean heritage whilst the 'left' admires and upholds it. this is quite the opposite of the 'left right' setting of the US. And whilst the US left has this weird atheist agenda, the Korean left does not.

Korean ‘right’ tend to be state-nationalists and tend to be proud of modern South Korea only, but they do look down on traditional Korean heritage. The Korean left tend to be ethnocentrist rather than nationalist and uphold/ admire traditional Korean culture across the histories. Also due to this reason they have a friendly approach to North Korea as they are Korean too, whilst the right focuses on perpetually being at war with them.

    Hi Francois,
It's great to hear from an American expat how things are living in Korea as a foreigner. I want to thank you for acknowledging that news channels are extremely biased (well both in America and Korea). I think it's rather tragic that in Korea, the only American news channel people watch is CNN.
I've lived in England for half of my life and after realising I could never live without my family, I've returned to Korea. If there's one thing I'm really concerned about and equally appalled by, it would be the average people's political ignorance. Since when has politics become idolising a single person? If you support a particular person (or particular law proposed by that person) from a particular party does that automatically make you an extreme leftist or an extreme rightist? Very few seem to have a logical viewpoint but they are always the loudest. In my opinion, both sides have the right to protest and as such both can have logical reasons why the current president should or should not be impeached. There are problems so deep within the labour? Democratic party (I'm not entirely sure what the two main parties are actually called in the US) and the Conservative party has it's own share of problems as well. What I'm trying to say is that simply shouting democracy! democracy! can't really solve a single problem but most people don't seem to realise that. It's a pity really, and I really do hope things will improve from here on.
P.S I've read that some foreigners think that the singing, dancing and waving heart-shaped thundersticks in protests is "creative, new and peaceful". Well, the peaceful part is correct and while I appreciate a somewhat positive opinion on the current political chaos in Korea, I can't help but feel it's completely ridiculous. K-pop is K-pop and politics is politics. Those who go out on the streets excited to be singing and dancing along as soon as their favourite singer/celebrity expresses an opinion don't really seem sincere at all in actually caring for this country's future.

I’ve been living in Korea for the last 22 years.
Although I understand your fear of demonstrating due to the article of law supposedly forbidding foreigners to take part in “political activities”, I have been myself the past two saturdays to Yeouido to demonstrate with the Korean people against Yoon’s coup.
This law has never been applied (as far as I know) and is there to frighten us, foreigners.
I also demonstrated against Park Geun Hey and Lee Myung Bak.
I also took part in demonstrations against the Russian war of agression against Ukraine, with Ukrainians and with Russians.
Not once have the police bothered anybody.
Even more than this, during the demonstrations against the Russian war in Ukraine, the police was informed beforehand, and they were helping the organizers to have a peaceful demonstration. They were very kind and never showed any intention of cancelling the demonstrations. On the contrary.
Basically, this is to say that, as far as my experience goes, there was never any problem demonstrating as a foreigner in Seoul the last 22 years.
I should add, though, that most of my foreign friends do not participate in demonstrations because of this fear you are talking about.

Overall, it's sad to say this, but Korea's democracy is flawed at best. People here do not tolerate diversity of thought here and very hot tempered.
For the specifics of this incident, while I do not think the martial law was a right thing to do, my concern is that people are turning a blind eye to the atrocities the supermajority opposition party have done since the general election.
Before patting yourself in the back purporting as the guardians of democracy, one should be worried when a political party wields its power through endless impeachment and unbased attempts for a special DA.
This incident should be an opportunity to fix and improve our democratic system, not just a mere redemption for some political factions. Sadly, it seems to be working into the latter

Nice video Francois! During my year in Korea (2018), I "spectated", not "attended", several protests in central Seoul, mostly around City Hall and Seoul Station. It was interesting to chat with some of the people there. Many agreed to answer my questions while I filmed. But one lady saw that I had both a South Korean and North Korean flag on my backpack (the latter was a souvenir from our trip to DPRK) and she proceeded to start loudly scolding me. I got out of there quick!

The protests held at Gwanghwamun and the political party supporting it are groups that defend dictators in Korea and label politicians who dedicated themselves to democratization as communists. They also take a pro-Japanese stance on the lingering issues related to Japanese colonialism (such as forced laborers and comfort women issues). Therefore, it is not appropriate to call them conservatives. This negates Korea's national identity and history.
The protests held in Yeouido and its participants, on the other hand, can be considered moderately right-leaning. South Korea does not have any left-wing political parties. I have lived in the United States for nearly 20 years and have a keen interest in political situations in both the U.S. and Europe. I hope my perspective is helpful to you.

Francois, your name is same as my supervisor's in America where I'm living.
I'm Korean. Firstly I don't mind listening to your posting favorably. One important thing I have to tell you about Korean history of politics, there were always resident north Korean spies everywhere no matter and whatever social status of societies. They are living together and penetrated into every different levels of Korean lives. They directly get orders from Kimjeongeun what to do in details and make it happen here. They make political movements and mold opinions and drive the directions of political trends, sometimes within universities as a student and a professor or any type of high level professionals probably even become politicians. Or just become the regular laborers of the big companies and influence the complainers there to join them etc.
So their ultimate goal is overthrow of South Korean government by stirrups and causing conflicts within. (Command from Kimjeongeun was actually accomplished at that point). They want to take over the country with communism and military force in the end. Their activities are always influncing both sides of opinions. The Kwangwhamun side people are very sensitive and aware of these spies activities, so go extremely try to block their existence. ( a lot of them out of generations who experienced Korean war too I think) President Yoon's direction meets them. There are cons and pros at sticking to this idea with President Yoon ONLY. No matter what he does he can rationalize himself with that idea to his followers. His side of people hang onto him like he himself is their last resort. They do not trust anybody else unless they show them this political base. This is extreme and definite political direction against North Korea. Because they think this is the most important principal they have to be founded on. They can miss a lot of other aspects of political needs and negligence because such a viewpoints apply to everything they see and experience it can make them blinded.
The other side Yeouido crowds are caring about all the other aspects of lives and politics, so they found numerous voids of this regime in their every day lives. Still the other side people insist President Yoon was right on the martial law and everything else because of hidden spies. So they almost lost all their common discernments by focusing on North Korean spies only and deny and fight against most of the people's criticism on President Yoon.

For example, films related to May 18, including "Taxi Driver," often depict peaceful citizens being sacrificed by evil soldiers. However, in reality, the rioters attacked the police first, resulting in four deaths and five serious injuries. Additionally, they robbed munitions factories and armories throughout the Jeollanam-do region, arming themselves to a level comparable to that of soldiers. They even tried to cause chaos by installing dozens of tons of dynamite at the Jeonnam Provincial Office. Yet, the movies never mention these facts.

The history of Korean politics: an ongoing tug-of-war between vested interests, including pro-Japanese remnants, and the common citizens continues to shape the nation's history.
Modern Korean history has a history of Japanese colonial rule (1910-1945), the Korean Civil War (1950-1953), military regime (1948-1990s), and the adoption of democracy (early 90s). The core keywords of the powers that seized power since the military regime were "security" and "economy". Since the war was fought on the mainland, security from communism was very important, and since the entire country was in ruins after the war, there were people who starved to death, so economic activities to eat and live immediately were important. However, there was also the shadow of dictatorship behind it. Power and vested interests naturally began to emerge around the dictator. Those who pro-Japanese activities during the Japanese colonial period and their descendants, as well as the groups that gained power, continued to use the keyword “security” as a premise, claiming that “North Korea is our enemy,” and using the people’s fear to acquire national projects and the corresponding funds, thereby increasing their wealth. In Korea, military service is mandatory for all men, and military culture is the root of Korean corporate culture. Since modern history began with colonization and war, military culture was the best way to lay the foundation of the nation. In the wasteland and fields, cooperation is more important than freedom, and the power of the organization is greater than that of the individual. That was how Korea was able to achieve rapid economic growth. For example, as a parent raising a child, you make your child study by punishing him every day. However, a human being does not grow just by being given certain “abilities.” Emotionally, they are developmentally delayed, but their bodies are like those of grown ups. That has been the state of Korea up to now.
If we go back to the military regime, people diligently sacrificed their individual personalities to rebuild the land and build buildings to get the country running again. Gradually, universities were established, and the intelligence of intellectuals who had accumulated knowledge naturally raised questions: "Is this society fair?" It was a time of great bloodshed, including the democratic movement of college students and citizens in some regions (e.g., Gwangju, Jeolla Province) against the government. The movie A Taxi Driver (2017) reflects that time. After a long struggle, the government that had been controlled by the existing pro-Japanese/dictatorship/vested interests was finally elected in 1998 as the president of a party that was actually pursuing full-fledged democracy, a party that stood on the side of the common people rather than the vested interests (now called the left side, but it's technically not, it's more of conservative party than liberal), and held power until 2008. (FYI, one of these presidents was sentenced to death before he got elected. The military government framed him for planning the democratization movement. Thankfully, however, a large-scale ‘Kim Dae-jung rescue movement’ took place in the international community. He was the first one who got the Nobel Peace Prize in S.Korea.)
However, the vested interests of the past, the former ruling party, who still want more in terms of economic growth, grew even bigger (pro-Japanese + prosecutors + military + media) and viciously attacked the leaders and associates of the democratic government. You can't even imagine. There were a lot of suicides, which seemed somewhat homicide. Even the former president.
The Republic of Korea, with its low democratic maturity, eventually gave power back to the vested interests. (2008-2016)
However, perhaps because the people have matured, they did not tolerate the state affairs of Park (the daughter of the former military dictator), who was elected simply because she represents the vested interests, and they corrected it. What is interesting is that if you have watched even one debate or move before the presidential election, you would know that this incompetent person is at a level where she cannot even serve as a public official, let alone the president. However, there still existed an ignorant fandom in Korea. If you have read the book What's the Matter with Kansas?, you may understand it easily. Moreover, during this period (2008-2013), an online comment-part-time job organization was created, and it began to intrude and mess the entire society by inciting public opinion for the benefit of the vested interests. It formed a combination of a corrupt government, corrupt media, and corrupt commenters.
After the impeachment anyways, the Democratic Party got a president again, but the wheels of corrupt media and public opinion incitement set by the vested interests continued to roll on their own, and in the process, they created an even bigger ignorant organization. (Extreme right-wing RUclipsrs and the elderly who subscribe to their channels, believers/followers of heretical religions, corrupt Protestant pastors and their believers) The result was, of course, Yoon Seok-yeol. At this time, the corrupt media's methods become even more sophisticated and vicious. Since they can't win with promises and visions (after all, the reason they do politics is for their own benefit), they attack their opponents with all kinds of negativity (somehow finding tiny mistakes with the opposing candidate and camp, exaggerating them, manipulating them, and inciting them). It's like when a bully randomly starts calling you 'Booger Boy' for no reason, and suddenly, that nickname sticks. Before you know it, you're 'Booger Boy' for the rest of your school life. Foolish and non judgmental people also believe without question the fake facts that RUclipsrs criticize the opposing party in a shallow and sensational way, because it suits their tastes. They are the people who are out in Gwanghwamun now. They still shout "security." However, to the current MZ generation, the majority who were at Yeouido, those interest groups that are ruining the country are a greater threat than North Korea because we know there's no war unless you start first, and we know that S.Korea's military power is top 5 in the world. If they receive a salary with the people's taxes, shouldn't they work for the people? The current young generation doesn't tolerate it as much as they know.
The right-side in South Korea is not "conservative". It is just an interest group. Have you seen the news about the impeachment vote? They are selfish, selfish people who refuse to vote as a group for fear of losing their benefits. They don't represent their own constituency. They say, "We will not hand this country to the opposing team's candidate." This country is theirs in their logic. Wrong. This country belongs to all the people.
The true conservative in South Korea is the current Democratic Party. There is no proper left side in South Korea actually. Only when the current Democratic Party can settle and play the role of a conservative like the Republican Party in the US, can a progressive force like the Democratic Party in the US emerge.
The person who was impeached this time listened to the words of a shaman and practiced strange superstitions. The person who was impeached before that also practiced shamanism. Even now, 20-30% of people serve these people as leaders. Corrupt politicians who don't care about the people and only think about their own needs, the rotten media who blind people, prosecutors who abuse their power and send innocent people to their deaths, unfair judiciary, and the ignorant following of heretical Protestant believers have made Korea so sick.
As a Korean living in the United States, I came to understand why Americans' highest value is freedom. Democracy has not yet been firmly established in Korea. Perhaps it is because the system was first introduced formally to match the rapid economic growth. Growing pains are necessary for growth. Thank you for sharing the vivid situation of Korea currently suffering from growing pains and for your attention/curiosity.

But, as a matter of fact, many foreigners already take part in demonstrations and are never having to pay any negative consequences. I say that from experience over the last 20 years and more demonstrating about many different things in Korea as a Westerner.
If you live in a country for many years, it is a civic duty to get involved, regardless of a law that has never been applied.

Reason for declaring martial law based on interviews with the shaman whom the impeached president believes in and follows, and on officially shared information and articles: The shaman Cheongong said that Yoon Seok-yeol could receive the Nobel Peace Prize only if North and South Korea are unified in 2025. Accordingly, Yoon planned a war with North Korea, and martial law was the starting point. Their plan was as follows:
Declaration of martial law -> assassination squads disguised as North Korean soldiers kill US soldiers -> US bombs North Korea -> war -> unification by force -> Nobel Peace Prize

Marc, I recommend that you do not participate in large-scale demonstrations;; If you barge in by mistake, you could end up in a very difficult situation, so please keep that in mind. Since this is a protest site full of Koreans' discontent, you should be careful because you may occasionally see people engaging in illegal activities.

The reason Yoon Seok-yeol implemented martial law this time is as follows.
    1. His approval rating was too low (around 10 percent).
    2. Since the president was a former prosecutor, his political base was prosecutors. The opposing party drastically reduced the special activity budget (a budget that can be used without any permission) of prosecutors, who were his political base.
    3. His wife was continuously suspected of corruption.
    4. He was continuously being shackled by election-related suspicions and various corruption suspicions related to a person called Myeong Tae-gyun, who was related to the president. These suspicions were quite consistent, so many media outlets were publishing many articles about him.
For these reasons, Yoon Seok-yeol was in a crisis, and the only way to overcome it was through military force.
Funny enough, he is trying to justify this horrible act with the ridiculous excuse that martial law was simply to obtain evidence from the National Election Commission, citing the failure of martial law.
For your information, the National Election Commission would have accepted all the search and seizure if he had raised suspicions according to the proper procedure. The National Intelligence Service has already provided the National Election Commission with their administrator ID for security reasons, and they have already accepted the audit due to hiring issues. The excuses that the president is making are ridiculous and false, and the four reasons mentioned above can be seen as the reasons why he implemented martial law.

Hi. I'm writing in English for the first time after translating from Korean. The comments here are biased and distorted.
The rally opposing the impeachment in Gwanghwamun is the right wing that supports and cheers for the president's strong Korea-US-Japan alliance.
The first thing you should do is find out why martial law was imposed. Find the full text of the president's speech. And I oppose foreigners' participation in political rallies according to Korean law.
