I know many Americans who lived in Japan and Korea. Big difference is that none of them have Japanese friends. I mean true friends, not just acquaintances. But they have Korean friends they keep in touch with. Japanese are polite on the outside but very difficult to get close to. Koreans are very direct but open.

I lived in Korea 7 years and I don't have a close Korean friend :( I learnt Korean too but except my ex I couldn't really get close to anyone even though I am quite outgoing
I'm Japanese, but I like Korea, so I really can't stand videos that stir up unnecessary nationalism by comparing the two countries. Japan, China, and Korea shouldn't be pitted against each other like this. Too many RUclipsrs exploit it for views, and it's just exhausting.
But I don't think it is negative. The countries (cultures, peoples' mindsets and beahvior etc.) are different. I am Finnish and Finland is part on the five Nordic Countries - the other four being Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland. We share similarities, but are also different and often compared to each other. I don't think it is negative, it is just reality. And people like different things in different countries. So I think comparing is just fine. It is up to you how you take it.
I find it interesting to know the differences between countries cultures and acceptable behaviour. When travelling it is much easier to behave appropriately if you know the subtle differences (and not so subtle differences!). I also didn’t find the comparisons negative or nationalistic.
I think it's not about being 'better' but about being 'different'. It depends on your own personality which country fits better to someone. For me it's Japan but for others it might be Korea.
I just very curious this 3 country hate the each other and even do some discrimination behavior, but when them go to abroad ,they will stick together to fight for Asian rights 😅,and I knew that was all talking about the profits, human finally will fight for the profits ,what a stupid nationalism
I was really surprised at the one girl who said not many korean people spoke english in the service industry. I feel like these days every store I go to the cashier speaks really good english. Maybe taxi drivers are still not good at english because many of them are older. Also, I left Korea for 10 years to live in the US, and when I came back to Korea, there are so many more foreigners than before, and english is being spoken everywhere and most restaurants even have kiosks with english available.
Legit, have no idea what she's on about, it's literally the total opposite of what she said, everyone in Korea basically spoke perfect fluent english when I went shopping etc, meanwhile in Japan I'll be VERY lucky to get more than a simple "Yes" or "No" out of them. Japanese also are terrible at English, sorry but for a country that makes it mandatory for basically your entire school life to learn, their level of speaking is abysmal...Too closed off mentally to care about anything other than their failing culture, no wonder the economy has been in the trash for 34yrs here...
6:55 that's bizarre, it's completely the opposite from my personal experience. Everyone in Korea knew a little english to help me out, whereas in Japan, 99% didn't speak any english whatsoever.
I went to Tokyo for a holiday and no one spoke English LOL, I was so surprised because it was a tourist area too - no one even knew a little bit of English
Yeah only the convenience store workers from Nepal know English here. Like seriously even in the tourist crap holes almost nobody understands anything in English
Japan is much more westernized compared to Korea, likely due to its long-standing history with the United States. From post-war influences to cultural exchanges, Japan has embraced various aspects of Western culture, which are evident in its lifestyle, fashion, and even education systems.
On average from being in Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Koreans are better on average at understanding English and speaking it but definitely understanding. Taiwan was the worst and Japan was in between. Not sure what that blonde girl was talking about
I lived in Korea for 9 years and visited Japan 5 times, as well as 11 additional Asian countries. Both countries are great and are my 2 favorite countries to visit out of over 20 visited. In regards to English, I can definitely say Koreans, on average, speak better English. It's best to learn the language if possible, but if just visiting it is easier to use English in korea. In Japan people are very polite and very helpful. In korea, they are also mostly polite and very direct. The direct attitude doesn't exist so much in Japan. If you like people being direct, you would like Korea. If you don't like the direct attitude and prefer context from what is being said, Japan may be comfortable.
I'll preface by saying this is simply my personal experience. I lived in both places - Japan first, then Korea. 2 Years more in Japan than in Korea. As a non-Asian, I liked Korea more. For me, I found Japan to have a facade that was hard to break, even after I learned a decent amount of Japanese. The people are polite, nice, and friendly in both countries. Both countries are clean, safe and easy to get around. And both countries have amazing sights and food. But Korea just has this... upfront honesty that doesn't make you feel as if you're doing something wrong or walking on eggshells. Japan, even within the major cities has this.... "we're us and you'll never be truly accepted" kind of attitude. Yes, that is something to be expected as a foreigner in any country but Koreans embraced me as a true member of their community, and has a direct politeness that's simply refreshing. It has been a few years, I've moved back home around 2018. But, I miss both countries, and Korea especially. Good to see its people, culture, and nation as a whole getting way more exposure these years. Cheers.
Love the comment. Yeah I agree that it's kinda tough to be in a group as a Gaijin in Japan. I guess it's related to what is described in the videio about the line in terms of personal life and society. I think Koreans usually tend to be more straightforward and honest, which makes them rude and ignorant sometimes. In Japan, you are treated with more courtesy and politeness, but at one point you can literally feel a sense of thin layer of distance between you and them. In constrsat, Koreans would accept you as you are and show you as they are. People sometimes misunderstand Koreans hate foreigners, but keep in mind that Koreans hate Koreans more than they hate the whole group of foreigners. While working in Japan, I remember making one frined to one guy from the north who was not like a Japanese as he studied in the US; this was not a usual case. In general, working in Japan was a good experience and kinda wish to go back and work for a few years as I lived in a bubble and did not speak alot of Japanese.
@@Carambolases Echoing some of what you said.. to me, Japan has a subtle but noticeable layer of “passive aggressiveness” that you just learn to deal with. As for language or social barriers - yeah a gaijin will always be one. I worked in an international agency so a bit more comfortable with westerners even though most if not everyone was Japanese. Same case with my experience in Korea - intl agency. And here’s one fact I didn’t mention - the average Korean of a working age (esp the younger Gen) is much more proficient in English than their Japanese counterparts. That made the entry into their workforce a bit easier. Not sure what you meant by Koreans being straightforward and honest “which makes them rude and ignorant” - I’m gonna assume you meant that as in a case by case basis and not a slander to the people in general. I didn’t feel they were rude, if anything - they have less of a social bubble sometimes than westerners who really value privacy. But overall very kind, polite, and considerate society over there.
I was shocked at how little English the Gen Z knew. When you compare their English fluency with peers in S. Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand it’s not even close. Korea is more westernized with a U.S military base for decades there, thus more Americans/westerners feel at home there.
The lady in the Blue Shirt at 8:20. IS NOT a foreigner she IS JAPANESE born and raised. I’ve seen her in a few RUclips vids discussing her life in Japan.
they arent hiding that though, she said her family has been in japan for 3 generations and that flag in the bottom right is indicating shes japanese, she has however also lived in korea for 6 months so thats why shes in the video...
06:52......I couldn't agree with her more. I've traveled abroad a lot. Japan is one of those countries where English is not really spoken. Korea, on the other hand, I was surprised to find quite a few people, especially young people, who are very good at English. (I lived in Japan for 1 year and Korea for 3 years) Also, Koreans have better pronunciation than I thought. It's amazing that she has such opposite ideas after living in both countries for so long. Objectively speaking, there are a lot more English speakers in Korea than in Japan.
@ I have visited both frequently over the last 12 years. I have girlfriends in both countries. One child in Seoul and one in Osaka. To answer the question in a simple one. Japan, is more advanced and rich in culture. Also Japan is more beautiful geographically. Korea is a good country also, no doubt about that. Just not at the level of Japan. Korea is behind primarily because they had gone through a civil war and they suffered a lot of setbacks from that. They are recovering and becoming more a economic force as time goes on. You are best to go see for yourself. You will enjoy yourself and the experience. You will find Japan is the place you always want to go back to.
I am an American who previously lived in Japan but now resides in Korea. I find Korea to be much better. People here are more honest and open, which I really appreciate. It’s also more convenient and safer to live in.
Actually, I don't think anyone really said that they "prefer Japan." At least 2 of them said that they're in Japan for work. They were all very respectful in my opinion.
But they lived in Seoul... And just because someone is living in Tokyo now doesn't mean anything. They might be regretting their decision and want to leave.
Info: When it comes to wages for foreign workers, Korea pays 30 percent more per hour than Japan. This may have a higher impact on the minimum hourly wage in Korea, but Japan does not seem to pay the minimum hourly wage to foreign workers
Lots of people saying Korea is for extroverts, but I am an introvert and I prefer Korea. I have lived 10years in Korea and 10 years in Japan. I am of Korean and Japanese ancestry (US citizenship) and speak both languages fluently. Yes, I like to be left alone, but in Japan, it was unbearably isolating to do that. I was forced to become somewhat extroverted in Japan so that I wouldn't go crazy. In Korea, people bother you enough so that you are able to decline and be like, "nah, I'll stay home tonight" but always have someone checking up on you so you're not isolated. I also prefer Korean food (Japanese food was very heavy/greasy and the healthier/traditional options basically all had the same taste and the vegetable options were very minimal when eating out.) There are lots more options for entertainment and ways to have fun without breaking the bank in Korea. In Japan, anything you did was extremely expensive. Costs overall are cheaper in Korea and you can find ways to cut costs. Also, I found Japanese to be in general nationalistic and although subtle, 99% of the people blatantly "othered" non-Japanese people. It didn't matter if my father was Japanese, I was "foreign" and thus not one of them. Every time I met a new person in Japan, they would say things like, "I bet you eat bread and potatoes everyday" "Can you use chopsticks?" etc. It was annoying to be stereotyped as if I were a white person from Kansas. I have always felt "accepted" by Koreans. They are curious about my birthplace, but they treat me like a distant cousin, which was refreshing.
Are you suggesting that Koreans have a lesser command of English than the Japanese? While it seems rather trivial to debate such matters, I would politely encourage you to visit both Japan and Korea to see for yourself where English is more commonly understood and effectively used. From my own experience, the reality is quite the opposite of what is being asserted here, at least in terms of linguistic competence. As for forming friendships, in Japan, it is not uncommon for colleagues to work together for years and yet not even have each other’s phone numbers. How can such a dynamic foster stronger friendships?
When I was studying abroad in North America, my Japanese friends never shared food. Rarely, they would exchange a pack of instant noodles. However, Korean friends shared food with each other and even exchanged a box of instant noodles without receiving any money. Korean friends would give away their used home appliances that cost several hundred dollars, but Japanese friends sell even $5 items to their friends for money. Also, at restaurants or drinking parties, Korean friends sometimes paid for everyone in the group, but Japanese friends never do that. Japanese people only pay for what they ate.
As a Japanese, I bet Koreans are more fluent English speakers for sure. Korean language has more vowels so it’s easier for Koreans to pronounce English and they study really really hard in their teenage whereas Japanese have more difficulty in English pronunciation and we tend to avoid the awkward moment like speaking English and not being understood by foreigners. So all of local language, study culture and personality have lead Korean people to be better at English in general. BUT it doesn’t mean Korea is superior to Japan. They are just different from each other and Korea and Japan have their own good and bad points just like every countries in the world.
In regard to English proficiency and being extroverted, just scroll down the comment section and you will find that there are much more Koreans expressing their opinions, in English than Japanese viewers.
I've lived in both Korea and Japan for over two years, and I can confidently say that Korea is far better for foreigners. First of all, it was much easier to make genuine friends who truly care about each other. Plus, after taxes, the salary was more than twice as high.
That's because you lived in korea for just two years. It's hard for foreigners to firmly understand how the system of relationships in sk really works. Suicide rate of sk, which ranks number 1 among oecd countries, stemms from the Relationship problem.
Very interesting......for me as an American, I think I would rather live in SK and visit Japan. Interesting the lady who said she had a harder time communicating in Seoul opposed to Tokyo....in my visits I found the complete opposite (but have not lived in either).
I feel she surrounds herself in the American bubble. She probably lives in an area of Tokyo where a lot of foreigners live(Azabu-Juban and Roppongi) so many places cater to foreigners and speak English and employ foreigners.
There are already too many videos in this topics from Korean side by RUclipsr in Korea. thats why this video is very special, we wanted to hear so much.

If you like to benefit from digitization, then you gotta stick to korea, yet If you want to live with more analogue culture, go to japan. Overall quality of life is pretty same, cause they both are highly advanced countries.
I am Korean but Koreans are too proud of their digitization. But they aren’t as advanced they would like to think, especially for foreigners. Even buying a transportation card is pain (you can’t buy at the subway station - you gotta ask at the convenience store). In UK, you just swipe credit card on the subway. Having lived in Korea for many years and visited Japan several times, I agree with most of what was said in the video. But a few things the American woman in the blue shirt said left me scratching my head. 1. "Tokyo is a much bigger city than Seoul." Kinda? The metro area of Tokyo is bigger--37 million versus 25 million--but the central city areas are almost the exact same size. The special wards of Tokyo are 617 sq km with 9.7 million people. Seoul City is 605 sq km with 9.8 million. So Seoul is actually a bit more populous and crowded in terms of the actual city areas. 2. "Japan is more American friendly." Japan and the US were enemies in WWII. In contrast, the Koreans viewed America as their savior. Obviously, that was decades ago, but it has colored the relationship between Japan and the US versus Korea. To wit, I hardly saw any American food places in Tokyo aside from McDonald's and the like. Tons of American food places are in Seoul these days. Plus, having US Army bases in and around Seoul means there is plenty of direct American influence in the city. 3. "Japan is more English friendly." The last time I went to Tokyo, some people could speak English, some signage was in English, etc. But pretty much every Korean under 30 speaks a decent amount of English and everywhere has English signs and menus aside from really old Korean restaurants. And Koreans have much higher scores on international English tests such as the TOEFL. Korea is actually among the top 5 English-speaking countries in Asia now. Japan is in the middle of the pack at best. Yeah, some of her conclusions don't really match reality. But I can't deny that Tokyo is a great city, English-friendly or not, and if she feels more comfortable there, then good for her.
@missplainjane3905 I have learned to speak a decent amount of Korean and can use it when needed, especially at banks, hospitals, traditional restaurants, and in smaller towns. But most busy parts of Seoul--Hongdae, Sinchon, Jongro, Itaewon, Gangnam, Jamsil, etc.--will have English-speaking staff, English menus, signs, and so on. So you could get by in those places pretty well just speaking English. That said, learning Korean has minimized communication problems and has given me more job opportunities, so I don't regret learning it.
Perfect 10 half American girl talking about how insecure she was. Blonde girl saying it's easy to find English speakers in Tokyo but not Seoul. Where do you find these people
I don’t know about the Japan but being in Korea for over 10 years, Korean people and food won’t disappoint you. I have had a bitter experience but as a whole, I prefer Korea over any European country. And I want to rectify, yes for renting a house, you have to deposit a good lump sum money but in exchange you don’t have to bother to buy anything for a house meaning you are more flexible and quick. And I had a friend who deposited only 500$ and got all the amenities including tv,refrigerator, bed, oven, washing machine and the monthly rent was around 150$ per month…it’s crazy.
I feel like SK is probably less isolating so foreigners should prefer it more, there's that huge drinking culture and social culture but Japan is more okay with people being isolated.
As a Korean American who has visited Korea over the course of 30 years, the country has changed dramatically with regard to pop culture, global influence, and social views. I havent visited Japan during the same span, but I would say it has not changed at the same rate as Korea. I believe Korea is more open and willing to embrace change and that in the coming decades more foreigners will find Korea as a more accommodating society than Japan
Korean people are direct, Japanese people will not tell you what's really on their mind. Having living in both, I like both places for different reasons. Key thing is the language, learn it and it will be so much more fun no matter where you are.
For most Americans, Korea might be the better option since it’s the most “westernized” country of the big 3 East Asian countries. Also, more Koreans speak English compared to Chinese and Japanese.
Korea will become like Singapore or Dubai, and not just another East Asian country influenced by China. However, since South Korea is not a city-state, Seoul and the rest of the country will be divided and will sink into communism over time.
@@sara.cbc92 Koreans do not currently use Chinese characters, advanced vocabulary such as science is dependent on English, and Christianity is becoming the mainstream religion, and there is a perception among Chinese people that Korea is an East Asian country, but that is incorrect. I read only 17 percent of Japanese have passport while 70 percent of Koreans have passport. Definitly South Koreans travel abroad more while Japanese are more insular.
That's because average Japanese people don't make money against current inflation rate. It costs a lot money to travel to places like US and Europe. Japanese went to all over the world 20 years ago when their currency rate and economy were good.

I believe most Japanese people cannot tolerate foreign food for long.
For visiting, there's so much more things to do in Japan than korea. But living and working there? nah... Korea is super comfortable to live. Everything is digital, and people are nice. It's just if you like travel, there are not many more places left to go after a year or two cuz the country is smaller than Japan. When it unifies with the north, I guess it'll be worth a visit again.
Same here. Japan has more places to visit compared to Korea. Korea's development is extremely biased in Seoul, so other places like Busan or Daegu are less attractive than Osaka, Kyoto, Sapporo, Kyushu and else. However, for foreigners to live? We'll... You'll never feel that you're accepted to the community if you live in Japan. Korea is also introverted, but they're more honest and speaking directly. Japanese are kind to others, but there is an invisible barrier between people.
my view Tokyo more polite and quiet better service more organized has more uniqueness has more individualism convenient for one person indirect communication less colder during winter but very cold in houses many subway lines and more complicated overall living cost is more expensive less english speaker Seoul easier transportation more english speakers colder during winter but warm in houses direct communication people tend to follow same trends they care about people more but sometimes you could feel they invade your privacy overall cheaper living costs night life and both are safe and amazing cities!
Nice interviews, and respectful interviewees. It's so easy, as well as unfortunately common, for foreigners to badmouth one country or another and vent their personal frustrations. I'm also always impressed by people who learn the local language. Kudos to foreigners who can speak both Korean and Japanese.
I believe that Koreans have to take a language course of some kind and the most common one they take is English. They are later tested for reading ability and comprehension, but not speaking, for their college entrance exam, called Suneung.

@StellaDee-w9g That’s very subjective. Japan’s culture whether it’s architecture, art, etc.. is more widely popularized and known because they’ve been promoted way longer in the West than Korea has. Remember, Korea was a hermit kingdom so the West isn’t familiar with Korea as much it is today in such a rapid pace so the general public don’t know much about Korea’s history other than overshadowed by North Korea and recent stuff like KPOP, films, etc. Korea will reach a point with newer generations where they’ll find their niche and become like Japan in terms of wave of cultural impact.
As a Korean who lived in Japan for two years, I think both countries have their own pros and cons. First of all, in Korea, administrative procedures are quick and simple, and public transportation is cheap. Additionally, there are many convenience services (e.g. free electronic device charge) provided complimentary. On the contrary, in the case of Japan, a variety of complex cultural life is possible due to the huge developed infrastructure, so the quality and standard of life are higher. Unlike Korea, where infrastructure is concentrated in urban areas, Japan has infrastructure distributed evenly throughout the country, making it possible to maintain a relatively high quality of life even in rural areas. I think which place is better to live in depends on the person's tastes, but both countries are safe security and a majority of good people, so I recommend visiting the East Asian region. 🇰🇷❤🇯🇵
Haven't lived in either Korea nor Japan, but spent a good time studying with Asians in Melbourne, AU. It was waaaay easier to understand Koreans than Japanese. On the other hand, Japanese are sweeter, very peaceful and good listeners.

Korea has strengths in electronics, digital, kpop, movies and dramas, and Japan has strengths in animation, cars, etc. They need each other and are not worth comparing. Both countries are worth a visit.
Wrong. Samsung suffers huge competition from Chinese companies and has been falling year on year. what does digital even mean in this context. most korean dramas are plagiarized from US and Japanese sources.
The Korean culture is based on Confucianism and the Japanese culture is mainly based on Shintoism. And as far as I know, Koreans are more extroverted and Japanese people tend to be shy. After all it depends on your personality or mindset.
Yep, it's also why Koreans tend to be more extroverted about their racism, and the Japanese tend to be more introverted. And because of this, as far as the foreigner is concerned, it's easier to live in Japan.
If you ever visit Korea try asking the same thing, since you're getting people who have left Korea usually. Love these reflections, was paying close attention the entire time. Thank you :)
Yes. because they are living in Korea. It means mostly they chose living in Korea. So in this video's result is very easy to know. Because mostly they chose living in Japan.
The same goes for Japan. Most people love the experience and enjoy their time there, often feeling a deep connection and satisfaction when they leave. Visiting places like Disneyland and Universal Studios offers a unique experience that’s different from elsewhere. Additionally, the gaming culture and local restaurants, which are similar to those in the U.S., further contribute to the feeling of familiarity.

I was surprised to hear the lady say that English was more understood in Japan. I always assumed Koreans were more westernized. Then a few others said the opposite.
The younger Korean generation is more fluent in English because there's just so much competition in education... it's really nuts in Korea... so every kid from a household that can afford it start going to hagwons (juku) from a very young age. By the time they're in high school, they're pretty fluent and with excellent pronunciation skills. The only Japanese kids I met that spoke fluent English are those that happened to go to international school.
You guys should know even if Korean people are more extroverted than Japanese, it's not comparable to American or latino. The standard is just for Asian.
@@Tree-s6c Maybe in the Busan region of Korea but other areas like Seoul do not have earthquakes. And even in Busan, earthquakes are not as frequent or as powerful as in Japan. Japan has a serious earthquake problem and I would not want to live in Japan for that reason.
@@darksword1So you knew about it. Yes, Gyeongju and Ulsan. Both had magnitude 5 or greater earthquakes in places that had never had earthquakes before, I personally don't think we can say with 100% certainty that the other areas are safe. I heard that there is the world's largest nuclear power plant in Gyeongju, so if an earthquake occurs there, it will affect other areas as well. Both Japan and Korea are affected by earthquakes, so if you are afraid of earthquakes, it would be other countries. I can coexist with myself, so either is fine
So what was the final conclusion? I think this video lost track of the main topic on which country is better for foreigners, and it is greatly biased since the video itself was filmed only in Japan...so in my opinion it is inherently bias toward Japan since it shows naturally the ones who ended up favoring to stay in Japan, be it for work or otherwise. I wish they concluded on their decision to stay in Japan and if filmed in Korea on their decision to stay in Korea. That would have much more fair. The video didn't definitively show any strong opinion on which country truly was better or worst, but rather showed certain instances which were more advantageous or cultural differences only. I think this video title should be changed.
Tbh, S.Korea is better for Westerners. They are receptive and direct which suits westerners. Japan is relatively closed and you have to "read the air".
@@sara.cbc92Not all “Western” countries are exactly the same in terms of directness and openness. That sounds primarily American (US), and less so other countries such as Canada, Mexico, or many European countries.
My wife and I (both American) lived in Japan (Saitama & Gunma) ~25 years ago and Korea (Yongsan-gu, Seoul) ~20 years ago, and I found it interesting that not much has changed in terms of differences and the challenges to living in either country. Korea has changed a lot during this timeframe, so I expected impressions of foreigners living there to be different. We both miss living in both countries, and I have the privilege to visit both every couple of years for my job. I strongly prefer living in Japan & Korea than visiting. Maybe sometime in the future?
Americans are generally more drawn to Japan than Korea for several reasons. Japan’s cities, such as Tokyo and Osaka, feature Western-style shopping malls, highways, and theme parks like Disneyland and Universal Studios, making Americans feel more at home. While Korea is modern and heavily influenced by Western trends, it maintains a distinct Korean urban aesthetic. Japan also offers familiar global brands like Starbucks, McDonald's, and Apple, seamlessly integrating them into its unique cultural environment. While Korea has these brands as well, Japan’s long-standing embrace of Western goods feels more deeply ingrained in daily life. Furthermore, Japan skillfully blends traditional elements with Western influences, particularly in its fusion of Japanese and Western dining and architecture. While Korea quickly adopts Western trends, it doesn’t blend them as harmoniously with its traditions as Japan does.

That one had me going, oro? I speak Korean and Japanese (well not so much the latter anymore since it’s been almost 30 years since I spoke Japanese on the daily) so I never needed to, but I always got the sense from my expat friends that it was easier to go around the daily business of life in Korea on just English than in Japan.
I agree with her, I found Japan way more English friendly than Korea, Japan does have a more established tourist industry with more English signage etc. Of course, neither should have to be English friendly but that was just my observation.
@Anna-hu6wu Where did you go in Korea? English is everywhere in Seoul these days. I can easily go all speaking only English in most places in Seoul. Japan has some English, but it's less common at restaurants, public transportation, etc. Japan was less English friendly, overall, but I still managed.
Are you kidding me? Asking foreigners who choose to now live in Japan which country is better to live in?😂 I wonder asking foreigners who now live in S.KOREA and how they will answer the question.🤔😂
From my experience living abroad, if you focus on the ease of living for foreigners, it would be overwhelmingly other than Japan. Japan is a society for Japanese people, so it has its own unique worldview with morals and detailed rules that are very different from the global standard. Don't measure it only from the perspective of cheap prices, cleanliness, or safety. If you feel mentally distressed and lonely, it's because you made a bad choice, not Japan's fault.
Sorry for being blunt but I found it quite hillareous that the Spanish lady talks about how Koreans and Japanese are 'doing their best apart from pronunciation' etc. as if she does not have her own strong foreign accent in English and not as fluent as other interviewees. In Spain, in reality, it's more difficult than in Japan to find anyone who speaks English with you even in Madrid... Spanish people are super friendly and I love them but their speaking English...? Erm, definitely not.
You should be a Hispanophobic troll because what you said is totally false and ridiculous. Go on with your trolling and hate work somewhere else............
I'm sure that there is a lot more English speakers in Spain than Spanish speakers in your country, so I don't get why you are complaining. Most people in Spain under 40 know at least some basic English, it's taught in schools.
I lived in Korea for 8 years and Japan for 7 years. HUGE differences when it comes to foreigner's experience living there. This video just touched basic things. Nothing about dating, nationalism, earning money, saving money, driving, local people's expectations of foreigners, job availability, churches and religion, etc.

I think Koreans yes are more upfront. Which is good. Japanese are more reserved. Which is also good. But I think both countries have these great qualities. But....I feel Japanese should open up just a little more. haha! 😀
Japanese seem to dress more individually in their non-work clothes but conform in business dress, while Koreans dress similarly/follow trends in personal dress but more individually in business clothes.
In Japan, I wear casual and individual business attire to the office, and it's perfectly acceptable. There are no complaints, and it doesn’t feel out of place-it's just the norm there.
I’m Korean and have traveled to over 30 countries including Japan. I think both countries are among the best places to live in the world. Extroverts might find Korea a better fit, while introverts might prefer Japan. So if you want to experience living abroad in a comfortable and safe place, just pick one of the two.
@@missplainjane3905 The size of the economy is larger in Japan than in Korea due to the difference in population, meaning Japan's total GDP is higher. However, Korea recently surpassed Japan in terms of real wages. Therefore, the economic standard of living is almost the same.
6:45-7:13 personally I really hate when native English speakers have such a mindset. This issue is mostly coming from native English speakers compared to other foreigners. No matter how long they have lived in a non English spoken country, they barely even try to study a foreign language but only expect local native people to speak English to them. Unless it’s a short trip for a few days or weeks, just study a foreign language if you plan to stay there for quite a long time. Do not take it for granted.
Korea Pros: more dynamic, relaxed and free, everything is abundant , more convenient, outdoor workout heaven, way faster to get what you want, cafes and coffee shops are outstanding, delivery culture is insane, and everything changes so fast, it’s impressive to watch new businesses opening up everywhere. Korea cons: Besides the fact that the winters can be cold, which some people like, and the summers can be super rainy, the fact that Korea is such a small country kind of bums me out. Also knowing Koreans in Korea you learn how pressured they are to live for their parents ( and future kids ) which seems so oppressive to wandering foreigners who by their nature are working to living and living to live. Japan: If you are a person who pays attention to the sensory things in life, Japan is heaven on earth, everything is different, and awe inspiring. The uniqueness of the people and country is an addiction that many outsiders will never shake. Tokyo has a charm like no place else on earth ( as long as the foreigners don’t ruin it ) the sounds, even the smells, all add to the experience. The country is actually deceivingly big in terms of the diversity of places to visit or maybe even live. The weather has less of the 4 seasons than Korea but still quite an interesting climate. The cloudy misty June sometimes extends into early July giving a mild early summer, the late fall is fantastic and mild weather lasts until mid December. The Spring is not as dazzling as in Korea as there are fewer deciduous trees. The Kanji and kana written everywhere also add to the aesthetic charm of the country. As for Japanese houses, they are really interesting, and houses are abundant in Japan, it’s not just apartments like Korea. As for negatives, Japan feels a bit like a museum sometimes, the cleanliness can sometimes lead to a sterile vibe in certain aspects. Although go south to Kyushu and I think the right balance is more often struck. Okinawa is even more laid back. I actually fall short in my knowledge of the north, never been to Hokkaido or the north west coast. If you have anything to add please leave a comment. These are my takes on having lived in both, I think the different angles I used to analyze them is representative of the different feelings and experiences that I tend to have in each country. Share your experiences in both places if you want 😊
There's someone causing trouble by pretending to be from different countries, using multiple IDs, and trying to stir up conflicts between people from neighboring countries. It seems like she acts this way because she feels insecure or lacks a sense of significance about her own homeland,chinese-taipei. But it's pretty obvious what she's up to, so there's no need to pay too much attention to her. Personally, I just want to get along well with people from neighboring countries.
Just go to a restaurant not speaking either Korean or Japan. Korea has menu in tablets in English, Chinese, Japanese, etc., with pictures. It was very interesting to watch this video. I think that the opinions of people here are accurate, as they have seen one side of the deeper aspects that can only be seen by those who have lived and stayed in the area. Certainly, the differences between Confucianism and Shintoism, the real estate situation, and the tendencies of Japanese and Korean people's personalities can only be understood by those who have lived in both countries. Also, it is true that people with tateu may not be able to use some hot springs and other facilities in Japan. The reason for this is that the Yakuza and other Anti-social elements in Japan are symbolic of people with tateu, so it is difficult to distinguish them from those who do not have it, and there are socially accepted traumas, which may make it difficult to accept.
The last guy’s comment-at the very end, is spot on; learn the language. I lived in Japan decades ago. Hung out with mostly Japanese people and had a much fuller experience than my fellow foreigner friends who stayed in their foreigner bubble.

Legit, have no idea what she's on about, it's literally the total opposite of what she said, everyone in Korea basically spoke perfect fluent english when I went shopping etc, meanwhile in Japan I'll be VERY lucky to get more than a simple "Yes" or "No" out of them. Japan is much more westernized compared to Korea, likely due to its long-standing history with the United States. From post-war influences to cultural exchanges, Japan has embraced various aspects of Western culture, which are evident in its lifestyle, fashion, and even education systems.

Japan has the most introverts in the world….😂…there are 37 million people in the Tokyo area😮
I was shocked at how little English the Gen Z knew. When you compare their English fluency with peers in S. Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand it’s not even close. Korea is more westernized with a U.S military base for decades there, thus more Americans/westerners feel at home there.

Also, Koreans have better pronunciation than I thought.

Anyone who’s actually lived in both countries for at least 4yrs know that Japan is the better option 😂

True
What about other differences
When I was studying abroad in North America, my Japanese friends never shared food. Rarely, they would exchange a pack of instant noodles. However, Korean friends shared food with each other and even exchanged a box of instant noodles without receiving any money. Korean friends would give away their used home appliances that cost several hundred dollars, but Japanese friends sell even $5 items to their friends for money. Also, at restaurants or drinking parties, Korean friends sometimes paid for everyone in the group, but Japanese friends never do that. Japanese people only pay for what they ate.
맞는 말씀입니다. 일본은 개인주의. 한국은 따듯하고 함께합니다.
lol so true. Koreans build relationships through food! Food is always shared.
That just means that Japanese are much more Westernized. They were Westerized since the Meiji Restoration of 1868.

Sara.cbc92 is chinese-taipei Chinese.

Having lived in Korea for many years and visited Japan several times, I agree with most of what was said in the video. But a few things the American woman in the blue shirt said left me scratching my head.
1. "Tokyo is a much bigger city than Seoul."
Kinda? The metro area of Tokyo is bigger--37 million versus 25 million--but the central city areas are almost the exact same size. The special wards of Tokyo are 617 sq km with 9.7 million people. Seoul City is 605 sq km with 9.8 million. So Seoul is actually a bit more populous and crowded in terms of the actual city areas.
2. "Japan is more American friendly."
Japan and the US were enemies in WWII.
3. "Japan is more English friendly."
The last time I went to Tokyo, some people could speak English, some signage was in English, etc.
Japanese have more courtesy than Koreans.
I agree this opinion.
Exactly!!!
2. "Japan is more American friendly."
I think Japanese look up to White person.

And I had a friend who deposited only 500$ and got all the amenities including tv,refrigerator, bed, oven, washing machine and the monthly rent was around 150$ per month…it’s crazy.

Haven't lived in either Korea nor Japan, but spent a good time studying with Asians in Melbourne, AU. It was waaaay easier to understand Koreans than Japanese.

@@nutherefurlong Why would a Japanese person leave Japan to live in South Korea?
The same goes for Japan. Most people love the experience and enjoy their time there, often feeling a deep connection and satisfaction when they leave. Visiting places like Disneyland and Universal Studios offers a unique experience that’s different from elsewhere. Additionally, the gaming culture and local restaurants, which are similar to those in the U.S., further contribute to the feeling of familiarity.

The younger Korean generation is more fluent in English because there's just so much competition in education... it's really nuts in Korea... so every kid from a household that can afford it start going to hagwons (juku) from a very young age.

"Things have changed a lot these days.
I'm really surprised by how well many foreigners living in Korea speak Korean.

Also almost all northern han people in Chinese history are of koreanic n mongolic blood. First of all there is no such thing as han people. It's not ethnicity but nationality. Most Chinese were wiped out and the surviving Chinese became mixed without choice by its koreanic mongolic masters............
@@sara.cbc92"I didn’t know that Chinese Taipei had so much interest in my country. Not just us, but other places don’t even know where that country is. Oh, but I guess it’s not even a country."
Lived in both and I'd take Korea every time. Japan I did not like I never felt more lonely in my life.
I did not live in Tokyo or Seoul though. In Japan I lived in Kobe and in Korea I lived in Yeosu.
I know the feeling. Lived in Tottori (west of Kobe) 2002-3. Absolute loneliest time of my life. Lived in Chiba/Tokyo a few years later and it was much better as there were more Westerners and my Japanese was better by that point.
Do you speak both languages
@@missplainjane3905 it's hard to compare. People seemed by and large very nice, if you go to Osaka they are too, but as I said I couldn't speak Japanese when I went. The second time around I was much better. I would go into a kickboxing gym on my own and chat to people. They were nice so I knew a lot of people who couldn't speak English. It wasn't a good idea to live in a more rural place in my first year.
Gaijin who don't speak Japanese always complain about being isolated 🤣
Yeosu sea is good
both are good if you are rich
You could say that about any country tbh.
@@vizisolutionseven africa?
That's a continent, but yes, there are nice places in Africa if you can afford everything to keep you isolated from the poors
Anywhere is good when you are rich…
I've heard from friends visiting Japan that it's cheaper now.
Another great video! Keep up with the good work, Takashii!
I have never been to the two countries but judging from the youtubers/music/movies I totally agree with the general impressions made here. koreans are definitely more approachable
