    I am Korean living in Korea but went to school in the states back then. Totally agree with your perspective. Wherever is basically same. People are people. There are good people , kind people, assholes and dumbs wherever you go. There's a funny phrase in Korean especially commonly used during military service in Korea, "law of conservation of byungshin(f***ers)". That means there's at least one f***er wherever you are hahaha.
    And I wanted to tell you that most Koreans actually do have a thought that there should not be too many foreigners living in Korea. It does not mean that they hate foreigners or other races but most Koreans pursue 'mono-ethnicity'. The idea is probably from our culture and history(maybe specifically in politics). Can't say the idea is bad but there are both good things and bad things from it for sure.

      What a wealth of information! I liked the part about there always being a f@@@@ wherever you go lol. I think this is a good video topic about Koreans wanting to maintain mono-ethnicity. How did you find Korea when you returned after studying abroad? Thanks so much for this comment!!

      just treat foreigners who like korea or who work and help the country well. I think korea treats foreigners well, obviously it's not perfect, but koreans have always treated me well when I traveled. isolated cases do not represent the totality.

  • @msjcas

    Ah, this video is so positive! You're absolutely right it’s all about how we choose to react and what we focus on. You can't control other people's perceptions, but you can control your own mindset and actions. Different cultures bring different challenges, but we need to respect that.
    Always look on the positive side. Not everyone needs to like you. What they believe to be right isn’t necessarily wrong it’s just their perspective.

    • @francoismarc3
      @francoismarc3  Час назад

      My friend! Thank you for adding value to the topic! Yes, I have found that having a positive mindset brings, at least for me, more opportunities and more positive and good people into my sphere of influence as opposed to being negative all the time. People also have the right to be negative and it's not always about ME. People have things going on in their lives that I don't know about. If their actions don't cause me harm and don't prevent me from eating, having a roof over my head, and clothes on my back, so be it. Thanks for dropping by as always:)

    사람 사는 곳은 다 똑같은 것 같아요. 한국사람들도 한국에 온 외국인이 한국을 좋아하는지, 한국인을 좋아하는지, 나에게 친절한지가 중요하고 또 바로 느껴집니다. 그리고 한국을 좋아하는 사람, 우호적인 사람들에게 결국 친절하게 대할 수 밖에 없는 것 같아요. 그 반대의 경우는 다를 수 있고요. 사람은 자신을 좋아하는 사람을 좋아합니다. 제 생각엔 Francois (or Marc)씨는 굉장히 마음이 열려있고, 긍정적인 마인드셋을 가지고 계신 것이 너무 보여서, 한국인들 입장에서는 정이 가고 잘해주고 싶을 것 같아요. 어쩌면 인종차별이 아니라 태도차별 아닐까 합니다. 그건 세계 어느 나라를 가도 같을듯 해요.

    great video and topic.. I think the issue a'lot of people are guilty of is they romanticize these other countries and they do not understand there is good and bad in EVERY country. Another thing is I feel people have an arrogance about themselves like deep down they envisioned they would be "popular" or have lot of "attention" because natives are so in awe that there's a foreigner there. I think if you plan to live in a new country you have to have thick skin and you should first learn to love yourself and allow natural relationships to arise.

    What a great question "is it Korea's... Responsibility to be nice to you"? Is it the world's responsibility to like anyone? I feel you would be had a positive experience if you stayed in France or went to Spain or anywhere in the world because of who YOU are. You're just a whole person not requiring anything (apart from a job) from anyone to validate your worth. I really feel the world mirrors your attitude and what you project is what you get. You have such a positive attitude Francois and that's why not
    just Koreans, but the whole world shines back on you. I know those negative comments, especially those threats, affected you but you don't focus on that. It's troubling no doubt but you pushed through it and found it created even more strength and resiliency. It does make me so sad when I come across people of color who have negative experiences and almost no positive ones but I also have to think they must be attracting that negativity or they are hyper focusing on it because honestly, no where on earth could be THAT bad. I'm glad you are addressing this because it does need to be discussed. I've wondered why these people don't just leave. They're not being held against their will. Instead they produce a year's worth of content condemning an entire nation and culture.
    God gives us what we need, not we want. You go Francois.

I learned at a very young age that job contracts do not include a clause where the employer should like you. I'm here to do a job and receive a salary. People can have problems at work, but I think this a global human issue and not a Korea one. No need to make videos lambasting Korea for an isolated incident. Thank you always for your support:)

    I think people can be prone to putting more weight on their experiences abroad than they do on their experiences in their home country. I'm sure there's a cognitive bias at play there. I treat my negative experiences in Korea the same way I treated them in America: I assign the blame to myself or the parties involved as appropriate and then get on with things. I'm not going to view them as indictments of the country or its people. On a side note, Ben's Cookies are good, but they taste even better in the UK!

    a korean here. korea will constantly try not to make mistakes that we cannot take it back. one of those are ethnic homogeneity. once we accept an excessive ratio of immigrants, it would be impossible to recover korean homogeneity unless we expel them. you guys might have serious discussions about the pros and cons of homogeneity, but most koreans put a high value on the korean homogeneity. you guys are struggling for local peace in terms of differences from race, ethnicity, discrimination, language or something in your countries. but koreans dont have and dont need to do the kind of struggling since all koreans are one. if koreans should fight for their local peace, foreigners could be the adversaries. i believe koreans are mostly kind to abroad tourists, but on the other hand koreans would not be kind to immigrants. as for you foreigners, making effort to be assimilated into korea and to show you guys are not harm to korean homogeneity is the only way you can be here without any issues. pls consider my english is bad and i am bad at speaking english gently. it could be readable in grammar i think.

    I was following along with your thoughts until you said that Koreans aren't less welcoming to foreigners because of their skin color than other places. There are actual person-on-the-street videos where young Koreans in Seoul openly admit that their culture is highly discriminatory because of skin color. The young people even say they don't like the situation and hope it will change one day. But then these same young people admit they don't seek out foreigners for friendships so the cycle continues. Your experience isn't typical of 99% of videos on this subject. You slipped through the filter. Be grateful for the acceptance by Korean people and leave comments about the experiences of others alone. TY.
    PS. The severity of this skin color problem seems unique to Korea. Videos done by darker skinned individuals living in Japan, China, and Thailand are much less likely to mention a skin color barrier when talking about their positive and negative experiences living and working in these countries. Please check out videos from these other places. Again, thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Yes, there may be discrimination against skin color sometimes, but as most of us are English teachers, it's very easy to find another job quickly that won't discriminate against us. At least for me, finding a job quickly in the US would be so difficult, and then there is the discrimination issue. The positives in Korea are top.

    They're extremely racist especially towards Southeast Asian or someone with darker skin tone. But generally they don't talk to stranger so in real life so you will not get harassment often.

      @pedro34543 I literally experience it myself often. I'm from Philippines working in SK for 14 years as a dentist. They're more cruel towards Indian. If you have American accent you will not get much harassment, maybe just some kids shouting n word at night then run away.

    I lived in Germany for five years and the most awkward thing I found was that I had to smile when I made eye contact with a stranger on the street. In Korea, on the contrary, you have to turn your head away when you make eye contact with a stranger, so it took me a while to adjust, but eventually I realized that different cultures have different ways of showing empathy and respect :)

    • @francoismarc3
      @francoismarc3  23 часа назад +1

      I didn't even know looking the opposite way after eye contact was a sign of respect in Korea...huh, I learned something new:) Exactly right. Each culture has their own way of doing things. As visitors, we have to find where we fit in. Thanks for this comment!

      @@francoismarc3 Of course, just because I'm Korean doesn't mean I know all the ins and outs of Korean culture, so this is just my opinion, and of course it depends on the situation, but in general, if you make eye contact with a stranger on the street and you smile, it could be misinterpreted as a sneer. Avoiding eye contact in this situation is thought to mean that I am not overly intrusive in your business. At least, that's been my experience. For a while after I moved back to Korea from Germany, people looked at me strangely because of my habit of smiling to strangers🤣

    I was here for a good while in 1997 during the IMF "ordeal" (for the lack of a better word), and what jumped out at me at that time that no longer seems to exist after I returned later is humility. Took some getting used to, because I felt a kindred spirit in those early days but no longer do to that extent. I would be surprised if your younger audience members could understand, having not been here.

      @@francoismarc3 As the saying goes, I didn't know what I had until it was gone. If I could do it again I would have at least stayed a few more years to give it a chance. The problem for many foreigners is that getting paid was quite difficult in those days. It wasn't my reason for leaving, but many did leave during those days because of not receiving a paycheck.
