They do have it but it must be created to glorify the government. So if you learn an instrument, it's supposed to be for that purpose, not for the joy of music. It's the same with their musical groups and tv dramas.
Every time I go to another country I return to the States with a fresh heart and so much gratitude I've hugged imagination officers and told them that I appreciate the work that they do. I went to Malaysia one time and it is not my favorite place. When you disembark the plane there are soldiers with AK47s points at the passengers. It's horrible. RIGHT???? The same in Russia; they were once world famous for their music, art, dancing.....SOMEONE stepped in and destroyed all of that. People NEED FREEDOM to create art, cook, dance, fall in love. This is exactly happened in Cambodia from 1975 to 1979, thanks to her to describe on our behalf, what really happened in those communists regimes treated us. I lost many family members included my father, uncles, sister , brother in-law, niece and nephews. I moved to NZ , in 1984, after spent sometime in Thailand refugee camp. This interview is one of a lifetime. I have no words. Just knowing that everything here is not even a pixel of the full image and how heartbreaking it is to go through, kills me. I feel SO GRATEFUL for everything I have and I pray for North Koreans' lives. The fact that Yeonmi is alive to tell us her point of view of her escape and much more; the fact that she's one LUCKY survivor among so many that have risked their lives wilingly because of the fact that they have literally nothing to lose. This is truly insane.
Yeonmi is a huge liar and is finally being exposed 😭😂 yes she’s North Korean however even her mother has admitted she’s very over exaggerated things and not 100% telling truth. Yeonmi used to be on a tv show in South Korea and was deemed “Paris Hilton” of North Korea for how much better her life was compared to other North Koreans, she’s been exposed for not actually living in poverty and her own mother admitted “yeonmi couldn’t even wrap her head around how the other North Koreans she met were from the same country as her” to yeonmi living in North Korea was luxury and she was part of high ranking family. She wouldn’t understand anything about majority of North Koreans who live in poverty. North Koreans and North Koreans and people who dedicate their life to helping North Korean defectors call our Yeonmis BS all the time and how she’s hurting innocent North Koreans with her false claims, I know North Koreans in Russia ok work visas, they all laugh at her cause of pathetic her lies are. Everytime she claims an “execution” happened. She was called out for lying and there was no executions even happening within the time lines of what she said and definitely not for the reasons she says. North Koreans can get executed yes, but not for watching movies and the stuff she claims. Her story is constantly changing
The show she was on was a South Korean talk show for North Korean defectors telling their stories, yeonmi park could not relate to 60% of the struggle the other North Koreans went through, she was on the show with her mother. It was very clear how privileged she was. So a lot of people were very shocked at the fact she become an “activist” and said such wild things. Yeonmi is also not on any kill list, and if she was they would’ve killed her by now like they’ve done to other North Koreans. Yet here yeonmi is living in USA for more than 9 years now and before that lived in South Korea and before that lived in China after leaving North Korea
😢 come on... the person who is starving is a slave to hunger. How can such a person not seek freedom from hunger? We are stupid to not seek freedom from suffering, but 100% of material world inhabitants don't want to solve the problems of death, disease and old age. To be free from these basic miseries is real, and is the most valuable freedom.
@@tulayamalavenapi4028 the starving person, in the midst of their starvation, does not know they are a slave to hunger. They do not realize or have any such thought. They aren't seeking to be free from hunger, they are only desperate to survive. There is an enormous difference.
😮 well what about sticks & stones break bones, but words can never hurt one.(? ) My mother used words that were meant to hurt me and break my spirit, but deep down I could feel a greater power that gave me strength in spite of her sarcastic awful demeaning speeches. I could learn to predict her reactions and just put up my umbrella in these storms .... Vedic literature confirmed that there are two birds sitting together on the branch of the heart. One is called paramatma (super soul). There are uncountable witnesses to all our actions and activities such as sun and moon and others and that includes paramatma. Every time I hear her speak I am so impressed by her. She's so intelligent and well spoken. I think what amazes me the most is just how well versed she is about the world and our society now. To come from where she did and to have gained the amount of knowledge she has is just incredible. Even her referencing the New York Times, or talking about the words and concepts that don't exist in NK, like 'love' and 'like.' She had to learn all of this, it's just comprehensible. Inredible how much she's adapted. I will say though it all must have been so welcomed, and because of this maybe it was easier to take it all in.
Honestly, I cannot imagine a people or tribe where the teens don't fall in love for each other. In case that's true, how do they know how to get pregnant when they got married? How do the mom's in NK raise their kids without loving them ? 😢
This woman is so incredibly articulate & intelligent, the fullness of her vocabulary is astounding especially considering that she came from such primitive and stark beginnings, I can't get over it, she is amazing.
It is crazy to me how she is quoting things like George Orwell's Animal Farm and Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games while telling us she had never even seen a map of the world before. She didn't even know who Jesus was, and she's sitting here, more educated than half of the people I have met in my life. And much more than this, she's educating every viewer while risking her safety. I am completely blown away.
I believe you misunderstood her.. If you watch all her interviews she said she didn't know anything while in North Korea. She started knowing about these things after she escape North Korea. If she is lying you will surely catch her if you read her book and also watch all her interviews since she did so many interviews
@@lalthakimi2902 it's kinda sus when it's out of our comprehension of how horrendous things and life can be for someone when we have it not so hard as the other
@@lalthakimi2902not really. Imagine yourself being isolated and living in survival mode your entire childhood and upbringing. The new modern world would probably be easier to digest and remember. Sit in a place of empathy and it’s easier to understand.
The section of "Oppressed people don't know they're oppressed" gives me George Orwell's '1984' novel vibes. When Yeonmi said those who control the language controls your thoughts, the same things is brought up in the '1984' novel, where the language has been so butchered that the future generations to come won't have words to describe anything, to think that they're being opressed and won't question it; they literally won't have the words for it. Honestly, to think think that this dystopian novel was written just after the 2nd world war as a warning to people but the events of the books still unfolded in modern times is actually terrifying. Also, the mention "thought-crime" (30:30 onwards) is just so sureal and is also a major element to Orwell's dystopian fictional society. Everything that Yeonmi is saying about North Korea is the real life version of '1984'. Holy shit
HISTORY ALWAYS REPEATS ITS SELF. This is actually fuckin insane to think that all of this is unfolding rn, n everyone else is jus ignoring the torturing lived of 25 million people
Or she could have read the book first then proceeded to use those words afterwards. We honestly don’t know what’s the honest truth and what has been exaggerated to ensure her credibility and story are accurate so that she won’t be proven to be dishonest. Why has she been flogging her story of escape and survival when all other North Korean defectors may have written about their experiences and journey of survival but yet they go on to live “quieter” lives out of the public eye? Perhaps all other NK defectors are not as naive as Ms Park for they truly understand the full reach of NK’s political system and the power of their own government. People should start taking what is being said with a grain of salt.
Divide and conquer. I REFUSE. I need to be connected even to people whom I disagree with. We have common goals. ALL of us. If we can just agree on what DIRECTION we are going; i.e., Progress. As of the situation now, I think we’re on the brink of ww3. China dominates Asia and soon invades Taiwan. Russia’s invading Ukraine and a few times has nuke threatened NATO. North Korea keeps on testing long ranch missiles across Japanese seas. Vietnam’s thinking of Cambodia Laos and Thailand. Unrest in Africa, turmoils in Middle East and the US is right in the middle. They are no longer listening to the US since them most have nukes. So there you have it and I pray I won’t be here when that day come. May Gods have mercy on us.
Lots are. Canada has loads of "tent cities" even nearly in front of our house of commons. A remembrance day live show, had trouble hiding them, and there's needles etc everywhere, cause they let everyone have drugs for "their addictions" but don't have actual infrastructure or care to help them ween themselves off. Low crime punishments, like someone my sisters age was ended by a group of teenagers, and they've reoffended MULTIPLE times and are still currently free. It ISN'T exclusive to just NK
Like just because someone was born in america or canada, doesn't mean our lives are infinitely better just because. Lots of our governments are traitors
As someone who’s gone hungry it puts you in this weird trance like state the only way I can describe it is like those fish at the pet store that are packed into one tank,, the air becomes thick and heavy you become confused and zombie like. I read her book. It had such an affect on me. I felt so blessed to be born and raised in America. I feel as though she had angels around her when she crossed the Mobi dessert to freedom
What a brave woman she could have just slipped into society and let a safe quiet life but like she said her family lost their life's and disappeared she escaped to have a voice for the people that she loved and lost and now she is speaking for every north Korean and still no one takes any notice so sad😢
People do take notice. It just so happens that many became sceptical of her stories when other people who have fled North Korea chose to come forward to make people aware that some of her descriptions of life inside the closed off country are exaggerations and/or fabrications. Like how she described their education and when she claims there is no music or art. That all North Koreans are constantly famished and starving so on. People have also pointed out inconsistencies in her stories. Especially after having read her book. And so the public has became less inclined to take everything she says at face value.
@@Sunfl75 Knowing that NK and China employ internet disinformation specialists, comments like this set off my agent radar. I am convinced people scrutinize her just because she has become a spokesperson and also because she is conservative. If she wasn’t either of those, people wouldn’t be vilifying her so much. She has a right to her political beliefs about the USA , if thats being conservative then so be it, she has very valid reasons.
I'm Swiss and I'm a teacher. When I imagine how much work and effort we put in education and installing democracy, freedom and an understanding for human rights... and then hear that their dictator went to a secondary school only a few km from my home... only to then systematically starve, torture, separate, kill, opress a whole country - HIS country.
When I was born, in 1986 in Romania, there was communism. In 1989 the revolution happened and communism fell. My parents have told us how it was during those times. They do have it but it must be created to glorify the government. So if you learn an instrument, it's supposed to be for that purpose, not for the joy of music. It's the same with their musical groups and tv dramas.

It is crazy to me how she is quoting things like George Orwell's Animal Farm and Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games while telling us she had never even seen a map of the world before. Dude she has been out of north korea for 16 years 😂 u dont think she learned about it in that time?

Her voice is amazing I could just sit and listen to her talk for hours on end.
I respect Yeonmi Park so so much. She changes my way of thinking.
She’s a beautiful soul. So happy she’s better now. ❤️🩹
She is lying about her story.
@@tedmarley4341 is she? how you know.
@@tedmarley4341 bruh what
@@tedmarley4341 , I would further say they both are engaging in propaganda.
@@fkl770 , Because people like her worship America. When they do they exaggerate the condition of whatever country they are from.
Such a shocking story but one that needs to be told.
I’ve watched multiple of her interviews and this is the best one. This is the only interviewer I felt like she really felt comfortable with and like he genuinely was interested in getting to know her and share knowledge
She really makes you realize how blessed we all are in America. yes our country has been divided lately but at least here we have the option to be divided. In north Korea they don't even have that option. If they disagree with their leader it is a death sentence basically
There shouldnt be an “option” to be divided in the first place
@@eminem21314Then you do not believe in true freedom. You do not deserve to be American.
She is sooo smart and down to earth
