@@florinpandele5205 That's the main reason I haven't implemented any cameras around here. I have an internal home network (wired and wifi) and have an existing (internal only) server on that network. Kind of like a dashcam app I had on a phone years ago. It saved its video to the phone's SD card. So why not a doorbell cam that saves to a local network storage location. Seems simple enough, but everything seems to insist on a "cloud" connection. Just like the wifi functionality in appliances. Connecting a dryer to wifi to let your phone inform you a cycle is done might be nice (particularly if the laundry room is isolated, in the basement, etc), but why does something like that have any reason to use, much less need, a cloud connection? Why does my vacuum cleaner need a cloud connection? Just seems silly. I see no reason why I should not be able to have ANY device on my network talk to ANY other device also on the network directly, without requiring any external service.
I ditched Ring a couple of months ago and am now using the XTU and it is a brilliant product and battery not yet needing charged. I have had a Ring for long time and now they want my address and other details that they do not need other than for data mining purposes. I also use the XTU external motorised camera and happy with that as well.

Ring is an Amazon company. You would expect any less. “when you crawl into a sleeping bag with a rattle snake it’s not a question of if you’re going to get bit, but when
I didnt know that and its the feature that I like the most on the Ring doorbells, linked to a smart TV I just say "alexa show me the front door" and I can interact with any callers when im watching the TV.
I use the aosu doorbell/motion detector...cost about $130 on Amazon....it's wireless (recharge about every 3 months) and NO SUBSCRIPTION....it comes with an sd card installed, but you can always save the old one and insert a new.
Canary did the same..started off with all these great free services for the home camera then went to a subscription service. No one was grandfathered in if you bought it before it went to subscription.
Interesting. But it seems you either have to pay for cloud storage, so no benefit over the Ring, or it goes on a memory card in the doorbell itself, which presumably an intruder could take away. Unsure why it can't go on a disk connected to the router, or even one's PC. That'd be more convenient.
Got mine for £24.00 for the year. I think I can afford the 0.06p a day. Even with inflation. I prefer the better quality of Ring and it connects to all my echoes. I have a big house lol.
Nice review. I didn't know that Ring wants a subscription. No way. This looks very good. Funny thing, this available in the UK, but shows unavailable in the US, on the Amazon websites.
I have the Google Nest battery doorbell (which I use in wired mode). Without paying a subscription, it provides access only to videos recorded in the last three hours. That's OK with me, because the reason I got it was to know when I get package deliveries so I can retrieve them immediately, not three hours later. Nice features: Integrates with existing chime, integrates with Google Nest smart speakers and screens, intelligent notifications for people, packages, and cars. But, ideally I'd like more than a three hour history of recordings without paying a subscription fee.
It would take a very convincing reason for me to switch from my Ring security system. If you have multiple cameras around the property Ring will give you the best bang for you buck, but if you only have one or two cameras and don't want a subscription then you can explore many other options out there.
I tried a few like that and ended up with Blink door bell with sync module and 64gb usb stick and do not have to pay any thing all stored on the sync module 2 usb.
At some point you had to adhere to “ Amazons terms and conditions ( it owns Blink. I said “no” and didn’t install it. My personal business is not Amazons. o
CloudEdge isn't a bad app in my experience (have a couple of WiFi battery powered security cameras that use it). Occasionally the notifications don't notify at all, or are delayed but on the whole it's decent. Certainly better than some of the awful apps some Chinese cameras insist on using.
Although this is a great Doorbell, I would be wary how long before its banned in North America. I haven't had luck with any kind of cctv camera from China and especially with the latest USA prohibited list just released in October 2022. Ring doorbell costs are ridiculously high which i agree with. Thanks good video
The Ring doorbells I had ever come across in my community job mostly *never* seemed to work. When I finally got to see the houseowner and brought it up, I would be told that they usually broke down. So I won't have one, especially if, after buying it, one needs to pay a subscription. I think that many who do buy one stop it from working *because* of the usurious subscription.
I can understand if people are willing to forgo the convenience of having Ring (or other service) record and store videos for you, in order to save money. But I’ve had my Ring doorbell cam, spotlight cams, and a selectively placed indoor cam, along with the monitored security system running flawlessly for 5 years now. I don’t think it’s accurate to say that they mostly break down. I have all kinds of other home automation devices throughout my home, and I’ve tried a couple of other highly rated indoor camera brands, but they just don’t approach Ring’s ease of use and smooth integration amongst different device types (security system, cameras, and path lights, in my case).
I can’t believe that you mention perhaps the Only unique feature of this doorbell- the clown voice, and did not bother to demo it. That could be an entire video that more people might be interested in
Cloud Edge is the same software that runs my outdoor solar security camera. The siren feature is actually something new with my last update. If this door bell cam runs off what I already have, then I'm in.
So, as a video doorbell only this might be equal to the Ring, or even better if you consider that you have some local memory capability, but don't confuse the two. This is not as secure of a device. If someone walks up and rips this off the door/doorpost then your memory capability is gone with it, and they are free to enter your home without having an image of their arrival available to you. When you pay to have the Ring camera cloud connected the video goes via Wi-fi to the cloud almost immediately and remains available there even if the device is stolen or destroyed.
This looks like a decent alternative to building it yourself. If you were making your own, how would you waterproof it? Is painting a 3D print enough or maybe using lacquer?
Good but don't like the sd card being outside, I've got an ezviz door bell and the sd card goes into the indoor plug in chimer which is much safer, plus I bolted it to the door as opposed to sticky tabs
Hi Lee watched this when you first posted. But thought I would wait for a while see what you thought after a couple of months to see whether it was worth the change
Still works great. I’m really happy with it. Battery life is decent even though we are having building work at the moment and I get 100s of notifications a day!
I'd consider the Amcrest Video Doorbell instead. It can be used without a subscription and its an American company located in TX and not a Chinese owned company like XTU. And we all heard the blowback against the Eufy doorbell that's NOT supposed to be cloud based but stores photos and customer info on their Chinese servers ... forever. Thinking XTU is any different would be foolish
The doorbell WILL go to subscription after a year or so, like the RING one. If you want to view recorded vids - you will have to sign up for a subscription and you are in the same position as your RING doorbell. Sry, but the Chinese ones are just as bad as the American ones. I managed to get 18 months out of the doorbell before it locks you out of the saved vids and the only way you can access them, is by Subscription. I will buy a Kerui PTZ cam, they have an SD card slot and around £17 from Ali Express (I have 4 of them around the property) and do the same job without the slave ringer. You do need a power source rather than the battery solution for doorbells.
I have found my ring camera and my ring doorbell to be absolutely useless steam coming from my central heating boiler vent triggers an alert about every 20 minutes telling me someone is in the back garden and I can not make the monitoring area small enough for the doorbell so people walking past on a busy street trigger dozens of alerts at the front. They have a detect people only but this obviously sees steam as people.
Lee, can you load up app and view doorbell video remotely (ie from another location or on 4G/5G) whenever you want (not just when triggered)? Can you do same with recordings stored on SD card?
There is Google Drive, Microsoft 1 drive, idrive, Dropbox, Windows networking shared folder, router connected drives, home ftp servers, Apple drive, sms gateways, email attachments. It is ludicrous to ask users to pay for additional cloud storage!!! The USB card should be a backup for uploading a video or picture to your Google cloud and a few other free options. I like being able to see everything, including past videos from work and about town. I would be worried about someone prying off the bell and smashing it, which is why using one of the free, or already rented cloud (for other purposes) makes the most sense. I have been making security cameras out of old phones since 2015, and 4g trail cameras since 2021, and have always found that fisheye lenses are essential, otherwise I miss half of the beings that I am trying to capture. I probably would glue a fisheye on the doorbell and hope no one would pick it off, but likely someone immature would.
My rule of thumb is that home automation should stay in the home. There's very little that I want my house to do for me that requires an outside server but a lot of potential security exploits.
Can it tell you that a stranger is at the door? Or like ring can it recognize repeat visitors & not bother you? Can it store video someplace secure, instead of a microSD card that anyone can steal?
There be adt link or similar for runnin' egpu on a system thru m.2 connector And there is an nvme to thunderbolt, box case Maybe coupling both together makes for a cheap egpu, just needs proper box & atx psu
So the recording feature uses the SD card that's on the devices that's attached to your door with double sided tape...? The reason someone would steal said camera doorbell is to take the recording of their misdeeds with them.
around here we had kids pinching even the most simple wireless doorbells, and hiding in the bushes to play "remote knock down ginger" on multiple houses at once!
Don't know about others but I find that most doorbell cameras are pretty useless if the service doesn't allow me to have a conversation with the other person within 3 to 5 seconds of them pressing the button. I don't think you have shown us that comparison? Delivery people don't stay longer at the door.
I’m always weary of no subscription as pretty much all publicly companies that don’t charge a subscription usually die. I have been screwed by companies dying and the products are just bricks.
Eufy offers a better option in my opinion because it uses the same base to store data and links with the system I have in place which is also no subscription.
Do motion events work like Ring, i.e sends a notification to say that motion was detected, you see nothing on the live stream and you cannot view the motion event until it has processed the video file, which always few minutes too late.
Hi, I got a xtu j7 for my parents for Christmas. I installed an SD card. How do I know it's recording onto the SD card? I didn't see any acknowledgement from the app.
I have a number of Ring products. The Ring Doorbell Pro, and an older Ring Doorbell which covers the porch area. The other cameras surround the house and have in the past detected and recorded persons loitering around my parked cars. The subscription that I have with Ring is as many cameras that I want for $100 dollars a year. Each camera has video recordings for 60 days of storage. I used that feature when I was expecting a package from FED EX. The Fed Ex sent me a text that my package was delivered in person. That means that the delivery driver handed it to me. Which is amazing because I was at work at the time. When I got home, there was no package, and no one at home knew anything about it. I logged onto Ring Camera website and at the time Fed Ex said they delivered the package, My two different angled front cameras recorded the Fed Ex delivery truck driving by my house and continuing down the road. None of the other camera's recorded any approach to my house. So my storage feature worked out good for me. Fedex did their investigation and paid my claim after I offered a video of their truck passing by. My neighbors both have Ring Cameras so most of the block is covered my cameras. It is a quiet neighborhood and the cameras bring a little safety. The Ring subscription was 10 dollars a month, but if you bought the year it was $100. Best wishes. It also records great lighting shots during a thunderstorm.
Not sure why your subscription is £35 @ month I’ve been with ring for 5 years now and my subscription is the basic one @ £39 @ year! Basic for the door camera is more than sufficient plus ring has a much wider field of view.
Hi Leepspvideo, Very helpful and informative video. I have been researching doorbell video cameras for about 2 years, and have still not taken the plunge. Great review. Love the on-board SD and rechargable battery. 2 questions if I can ask.. Does it stream continually (if you added an external psu?) Is it Alexa Compatible.. Ty
I think 30 seconds was the longest recording duration although live streaming on mobile hasn’t timed out on me yet. I haven’t seen any mention of Alexa, was thinking I might have used an echo dot as a chime. I ordered the official XTU chime.
If you can sent a video to someone else, can't you save that video to an external drive? Why use the cloud of you can save it to an external drive? Where I currently live, packages are not visible from the street. Someone would have walk all the way up to see if a package was at my door. Since I have lots of neighbours who are home all the time, no one comes back here unless they are invited. But this is good to know should I move to a place where I need to see who has come and gone.
@@leepspvideo Bud you don't get it, your history etc is then in their hands? This XTU also unlike RING door bells did not seem at all secure in it's mount.
I hate my Amazon Ring door bell. Even though my door bell is less than 2 metres from router and says 78% signal strength, it takes ages to alert on my phone and many times I miss the person at my door. Absolutely hopeless. Spoken to deliver people about door bell and they all say the same as me. I don't have suscription as like you not worth the cost. I do like the door bell reviewed so may invest in one.
So you can still access real time functions of the camera without a subscription and even though you're not subscribed, they still have the video footage in their cloud? Still paranoid about Chinese apps accessing network.

I might have to get one of these. There was a huge spree of break-ins in my area over Christmas. Sheriff even came to the door for a heads-up.
I ditched Ring a couple of months ago and am now using the XTU and it is a brilliant product and battery not yet needing charged. I have had a Ring for long time and now they want my address and other details that they do not need other than for data mining purposes. I also use the XTU external motorised camera and happy with that as well.
What the picture like at night time compared with the Ring?
@@SidBonkers51 IMO, it is better but the the Ring I have is a few years old so cannot say how it compares to current model. The night vision on both my XTUs are excellent.
What is the data security of this camera like ? can everybody and their dog see the video ?

Ring is an Amazon company. You would expect any less. “when you crawl into a sleeping bag with a rattle snake it’s not a question of if you’re going to get bit, but when
I've still got the motioneye on a pi2zerow in my porch that was thanks to you! 👍 6 months and working well.
I tossed my Ring! Sometimes worked for people but rang for each and every cat that walked past, no matter the time of day or night!
Eufy worth a look. Works with echo products as chime and comes with option of own chime. Local storage. Polished app.
I didnt know that and its the feature that I like the most on the Ring doorbells, linked to a smart TV I just say "alexa show me the front door" and I can interact with any callers when im watching the TV.
I like the HIKVision system in combination with an NVR for recording. No monthly costs.
It's hundreds of pounds in the long term
We’ve just got Ring cameras, but the £35 cost is per year, not per month 🤷🏻♂️
Yes, I misspoke. I amended the description and added a pop up
In the long term it's expensive and will be hundreds of pounds
Nice review. I didn't know that Ring wants a subscription. No way. This looks very good. Funny thing, this available in the UK, but shows unavailable in the US, on the Amazon websites.
This looks similar

The subscription price is for a year not a month

I SWITCHED to the Google Nest Doorbell 5 years ago after using he Ring Doorbell for 3 years. The Google Nest Doorbell is must better at everything.
Very thorough review, really useful to me as I am not tech minded and have been considering a purchase of this type of tech. Thank you.
Videos Save to cloud or internal drive ?
This happens on occasion with Ring as well.
Hope this video goes viral, and Ring have to rethink their pay policy, or lose the market position...
Thanks for the information.
Thanks for the review, Ring sub now going up to £50 a year ... so looking for an alternative.
No subscription needed! Video doorbell XTU J10

This looks like a decent alternative to building it yourself. If you were making your own, how would you waterproof it? Is painting a 3D print enough or maybe using lacquer?
Maybe hot glue on all the seams of the 3d printed case. I found this while researching

@@leepspvideo Neat.
I've seen many RUclips videos where thieves come by stealing ring doorbell cameras..
@@leepspvideo thank you off to Amazon I go
I'd consider the Amcrest Video Doorbell instead.
I saw mention ring allows police access to the app without owner notification or knowledge and without any legal process.
What make was the doorbell that went from no subscription to charging? Do you have a link?
I have found my ring camera and my ring doorbell to be absolutely useless steam coming from my central heating boiler vent triggers an alert about every 20 minutes telling me someone is in the back garden and I can not make the monitoring area small enough for the doorbell so people walking past on a busy street trigger dozens of alerts at the front. They have a detect people only but this obviously sees steam as people.
But, how long will SD last ? even my Sandisk died 1-2 times a year in a DashCam
Lee, can you load up app and view doorbell video remotely (ie from another location or on 4G/5G) whenever you want (not just when triggered)? Can you do same with recordings stored on SD card?
I can access the doorbell remotely and access all the recordings on the sd card they can be downloaded or shared with another app on the phone.
Your the only person I seen that had a puffin web browser download I used to use it alot about 3-4 years ago jue to extensions via the browser
There is a way to route to Google Drive and download for the cloud too.
Is the battery removable for charging? My Ring is wired via the chime, never have to worry about the battery level. Otherwise looks good.
I don’t think it’s removable. When it’s low I’ll charge it overnight. Charging once every 2 months or so will last years and years.
Just binned my Ring yesterday
If i dont have to pay subscription then i would be interested in this cam
The ring video door bell wired, has storage card slot so you don't need subscription. Check it out
My rule of thumb is that home automation should stay in the home. There's very little that I want my house to do for me that requires an outside server but a lot of potential security exploits.
Blink allows for local storage. No subscription necessary.
Can it tell you that a stranger is at the door? Or like ring can it recognize repeat visitors & not bother you? Can it store video someplace secure, instead of a microSD card that anyone can steal?
Did I hear you correctly with the monthly fee?!😮. OK... yearly fee. Still not keen on Ring due to invasive permissions.
Yes I misspoke £35 a year.
There be adt link or similar for runnin' egpu on a system thru m.2 connector
And there is an nvme to thunderbolt, box case
Maybe coupling both together makes for a cheap egpu, just needs proper box & atx psu
But there seems to be some delay or lag in this approach, heard about it but never attempted it
So the recording feature uses the SD card that's on the devices that's attached to your door with double sided tape...? The reason someone would steal said camera doorbell is to take the recording of their misdeeds with them.
How do they know it has an sd card inside and its not using the optional cloud storage
5:36 Tell that to some people in Gosport right now lol There is a gang of kids going about nicking them and then dumping them.
around here we had kids pinching even the most simple wireless doorbells, and hiding in the bushes to play "remote knock down ginger" on multiple houses at once!

Paint the doorbell with ghost pepper juice. They'll be sorry once they start to feel the burn...
Thank you ordered the bell and ringer from you like hopefully you get a payback for it
is there an option to wire this in. Instead of having to charge it.
Don't know about others but I find that most doorbell cameras are pretty useless if the service doesn't allow me to have a conversation with the other person within 3 to 5 seconds of them pressing the button. I don't think you have shown us that comparison? Delivery people don't stay longer at the door.
I have a ring doorbell and no subscription , I never heard of any charges. I get notification through my phone through my computor.
I was using mine without subscription. It just means you don’t have access to your recordings unless you pay a subscription.
I’m always weary of no subscription as pretty much all publicly companies that don’t charge a subscription usually die. I have been screwed by companies dying and the products are just bricks.
Would it all run locally? meaning, can I have the camera and a mobile app running on the same local wifi that does not link to the internet?
Eufy offers a better option in my opinion because it uses the same base to store data and links with the system I have in place which is also no subscription.
I have an XSH Video door bell, free cloud, local sd if needed, SD or HD, free chime - has a host of features
@ freepress - is this an indoor SD storage
Do motion events work like Ring, i.e sends a notification to say that motion was detected, you see nothing on the live stream and you cannot view the motion event until it has processed the video file, which always few minutes too late.
You don’t seem to need to wait to be able to play the video as it’s set to record only a 10 second clip
No Video available for Hardwired, Or how you change the battery Thank you so much
A lithium battery that requires charging every 2-3 months will last many years
sorry, you Cannot replace battery
Hi, I got a xtu j7 for my parents for Christmas. I installed an SD card. How do I know it's recording onto the SD card? I didn't see any acknowledgement from the app.
I use History, calendar then pick a day or click alert.
Alternatively take the micro sd card out and view it on a computer
But how did you ring the doorbell and show up on cam while you were recording the video?!
Screen capture on the phone. 😃
When you have a FREE service, YOU are the product. This is a Chinese product, so you know they are capturing the video for something...
Not sure why your subscription is £35 @ month I’ve been with ring for 5 years now and my subscription is the basic one @ £39 @ year! Basic for the door camera is more than sufficient plus ring has a much wider field of view.

Great review. Love the on-board SD and rechargable battery.
2 questions if I can ask..
Does it stream continually (if you added an external psu?)
Is it Alexa Compatible..
Can this doorbell camera be operated through MotionEye OS as well?
No
Does it hardwire in though?
I have a CloudEdge app camera but it’s one account per device
Good video well done
So not only could someone nick the door bell but they also get the SD card? Yeah that sounds like a winner bud!
Most doorbells can be stolen. A £5 sd card isn’t my biggest concern.
Is it common for doorbells to be stolen?
@@leepspvideo Bud you don't get it, your history etc is then in their hands? This XTU also unlike RING door bells did not seem at all secure in it's mount.
I hate my Amazon Ring door bell. Even though my door bell is less than 2 metres from router and says 78% signal strength, it takes ages to alert on my phone and many times I miss the person at my door. Absolutely hopeless. Spoken to deliver people about door bell and they all say the same as me. I don't have suscription as like you not worth the cost.
I do like the door bell reviewed so may invest in one.
Will have a look on black Friday go see if it's discounted
no discount but bought one any way :)
Forgive me but where does £25 a month come from for ring? Mines a few quid per month
So you can still access real time functions of the camera without a subscription and even though you're not subscribed, they still have the video footage in their cloud? Still paranoid about Chinese apps accessing network.
The video footage streams from the sd card even when you are not on the local WiFi
The fact that the app developer is in Hangzhou (China) gives me pause about the recording of video.
