Bobotie with Yellow Rice - Geelrys | South African Comfort Food

  • It's probably fair to say that bobotie (pronounced ba-boor-tea) is the national dish of South Africa. Bobotie is a simple dish of mildly curried minced beef (or lamb) with a bit of fruit in it and a kind of egg custard topping. It sounds a bit weird to me, but bobotie is really tasy, and proper comfort food. Bobotie is usually served with Yellow Rice (in Afrikaans 'geelrys') and vegetables. I show you how to make yellow rice in this video, it's quite simple, and geelrys is the perfect accompaniment to bobotie.
The written recipe is here: keefcooks.com/bobotie-with-yel...

You literally said it pretty perfectly the first time you said it and you kinda lost your way 😂
I'm so happy you're making something from my country! Yay, thanks for showing us some love!
Other stuff South African food that's super delicious: koeksisters (a twisted doughnut thing fried in syrup), bunny chow (a curry in a half loaf of bread), rusks (twice baked biscuit that you dip in tea or coffee), melktert (which is a really yummy sweet milk tart) and my absolute favourite Pap n Vleis (translates to mielie meal and meat, it's so good.. the best ones usually involve braai meat. ..Oh this is getting complicated. A braai is like a barbecue over coals or sometimes wood. The food is always so good and you can get sousaties (type of kebab) and braaibroodjies (special type of sandwich thingy) there. You usually use a rub on the meat and serve with sauce and chakalaka with pap. Chakalaka is like a vegetable preserve that can be spicy or not. And I love tomato and onion sauce with the pap. But some people have chutney instead).

@Ampz14 - thanks for the suggestions. I have been toying with bunny chow, but wondering if it has a racist connotation?

    • @ampz1466
      @ampz1466 4 года назад

@@Keefcooks Wow, I had to actually research this because I wasn't sure. It's just a common food to eat here and I was kinda aware of the situation it was born out of but not totally sure. It doesn't have a racist connotation as such, like it's not insulting to make it, but it does have a heritage born from colonialism and racism. So I know this would probably be a difficult thing to start a funny RUclips video with but you also can't ignore the heritage of the food either. It seems like it's a lot like the Soul food in America that was born out of slavery.
Accounts differ as to why it was invented but from what I can tell it was invented by S.A. Indian Cooks to feed the migrant workers (Indian and later Indonesian and Malaysian workers were shipped here as indentured workers during Britain's colonisation of S.A.- hence Cape Malay Curry and Samoosas as other delicious food in S.A.). Later during Apartheid it became a convenient way to serve Black workers who weren't allowed to sit in the same restaurants as Indians.
On the one hand it was born out of racism and suppression and it's a sad reminder that past traumas still affect generations and still are a part of our daily lives today. But on the other hand I think it's a testament to how humans will find a way to make the best of a situation, even an evil situation like Apartheid. Instead of not serving Black people, which is what those Apartheid assholes wanted - to discourage inter-mingling of different races, they sold them delicious curries in portable edible plates. And it's so good that it's still sold all throughout S.A. and eaten by everyone of all different races.

Last time I had this dish I was on an overland tour from Vic Falls to Cape Town. It was served at a place called Hantam Huis in Calvinia in the northern cape, South Africa. The dish was made with a very robust mutton and was a bit overpowering I remember. Hantam Huis was a very strange place with dim lighting, dark green walls and weird manakins in bathtubs and beds and a cupboard full of dolls heads. It was like being in a horror movie. Thanks for bringing back this memory Keef, much appreciated.

Lekker video. Like Renee says, many of us always add the raisins to the rice not the main dish. Also, as far as the gravy bit goes, you left out one of the most vital additions to this meal. It MUST be served with Mrs Ball's Peach Chutney. I know that means more fruit but trust me 😉. (Other South African's will like this comment and agree with me).

Another fabulous adventure and education, Id had Boboti in Joberg, not attempted to make it, TYVM. Keefie, re Rice in Garlic granules? I live in Rain Forest, used to add rice to herbs. Now I buy 1/2gram food safe silica packs for herbs & more. You'll find them online (eBay, Amazon, Alibaba, etc) just be sure they're "food safe" ....they're inexpensive & reusable ones may be available in your size? I use 1/2 gram for kitchen herbs, 2-5 gram for other foods & items, requiring desiccant add ins. Give up on the rice -check your desiccants & change approx yearly.

apple, the texture is better and then its gluten free. Also the yellow rice (begrafnisrys) traditionally must have sultanas or raizens, not the bobotie. It is also served with tomato and onion salad, grated cucumber and vinegar salad and beetroot. I am South African and I speak Afrikaans, so I cook it often.

I too don't like fruit in savoury dishes. English curries in childhood put me off. They always had raisins/ sultanas in them. I was use to eating West Indian curries. ( Mum English, Dad Jamaican ) It's only lately that I'm starting to like the old school English curries. This recipe with a kind of custard doesn't instantly appeal to me, but I`ll give it a go. You never know. Thanks Keith.

YOU CANT COOK THIS! THIS IS POLITICALLY INCORRECT! IT PROMOTES RACIAL INJUSTICE AND APARTHEID! (well at least there was a strong leading female character in the end.)
well, now that i had my mock social justice warrior outburst:
is it a rice soufflé or is a weird lasagna? a dessert with meat in it? all i know, had you just presented the recipe without the name and any infos, i'd have guessed its of african origin, because weirdly enough - the raisins. meat, rice and raisins, that is south african to me immediately, i do not know where i picked that up, but yeah. it clicked immediately.
good job with all the ingredients, keefy!
