- I am on a mission to try and rate every single country's national dish to figure out which is the best national dish in the world(according to me). Today we're trying South African Bobotie: it's a spiced meat "pie" topped with a simple custard. What am I gonna rate it?

I'm from South Africa. There are many cultures in our country (about 11/12)
Each culture has their own speciality.
Give them all a try, I think you'll enjoy it
Ya, this is only the main Afrikaans dish and there are so many other dishes from South Africa
Yah ni I wanted to say the same thing but it's a las to type
That fact that you don't know there's 11...but bobotie is the national dish...don't forget indian cuisine comes from India☠️
@@omo708 Not all of it is exclusively from india. Take Bunny Chow, thats South African.
@@christinevictor3660 its the official dish. Our groups don't have their own dish. We just make food and 90% of our dishes are just braais and shisanyamas anyway🤣
Worked with a South African chef about 20 yrs ago, and he put bobotie on the menu for a few weeks. I loved it, and I believe I still have the recipe. He was adamant that the chutney required had to be a specific brand called Mrs. Balls. It's easily available in the UK, but I don't know about anywhere else.
We don't play about our Mrs Balls. No joke I just picked up some Mrs balls 30 min ago for dinner😂😂
South Africa has a lot of different cultures and cuisines so choosing a national dish is really difficult, but I think Bobotie is about as close as you are going to get. I myself absolutely love Bobotie and I am so glad you enjoyed it as well. I'm loving this series as I'm also learning quite a lot.
I'm going to have to agree, Also from South Africa and can confirm that what you're saying is true🇿🇦
The national dish is Pap haha
@@k0mm4nd3r_k3n yesss 😅😅

not me being South African and I have never eaten and have barely heard of this dish💀. Cool video tho. You should try pap and wors next from south Africa👌.
I was thinking braai. I like bobotie, but I think braai/shisanyama is more all over SA.
My fiancé and I are in the process of crossing off our world map with recipes too! We still had South Africa, so we made this tonight! Easy and an instant hit! We served it with yellow rice and more chutney: adding it into the rotation for sure!

I have eaten this (as a Dutch person), and it was amazing. I got the recipe from the south african mother of my friend and I still have it for when I need some amazing food (also it's in original South African language, which is really funny)
Wich on Afrikaans ,Zulu san, khoi san ,khoi khoi there is a lot of languages in South Africa and not one of them is the original language only the san ,khoi san ,khoi khoi, language is original language and there just clicks with there mouths they made there own language (ps there called Bushmem)🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
@@sgtmayhem659 I don´t know which one exactly, but it is a mix of English and Dutch. Maybe you know more with that?
@@gamer_kn1ght6 oh well it's Afrikaans and yes it is similar to Dutch when a family member of mine went somewhere where people spoke Dutch and she was able to understand some of the words and I'm sorry for overreacting it just we have so many different dishes and I wanted to know what language that recipe was in sorry
@@sgtmayhem659 No I understand. I just forgot what the name of the language was, which is why I just wrote "south african". I remember now it was Afrikaans indeed, thank you!
@@ibuprofriends Not exactly. Yes, the colonizers where the first ones to go there. But after a couple of hundred years, they aren't colonizers anymore but more like Americans: people who permanently live there now and having a similar culture, despite not originating from the country
I'm south African and I have this alot... Although I leave the sultanas out... Can't deal with the taste of it... But yeah, it really is an amazing dish... You should try it with yellow rice and that red beetroot salad stuff
You have gained my respect for not putting in sultanas
Originally bobotie was made from left over roast meat that had been finely chopped or minced. This is the reason the meat it precooked.
The spices are from the strong Malay influence of cooking in the Cape and are more delicate than Indian spice mixes.
A lot of fruit was dried in season as a way of preserving it for out of season times.
The Cape being a great vine growing area meant a lot of grapes were dried. The addition of fruit to savory dishes is very typical of Cape cooking. Another very common dish was gestoofde perskers, dried peaches that were cooked as a vegetable in winter months.
Bobotie is normally served with begrafnisrys (funeral rice), which is yellow rice with raisins.
It is a Cape Malay dish which has been adopted by the Afrikaner community many years ago
I doubt whether is can be seen as the national dish. Stywepap en vleis (form mealie porridge and meat) is probably closer as most communities in SA has some version of it
As an Indian I just know it would be amazing with rice or roti 😭
Yes
Its made out of beef bro 😭
@@Abhinav-lm5qm here in bd eat meat with roti rice or paratha all the time bro
Traditionally it is served with yellow rice, so you are absolutely right!
@hhr bestie, try it with yellow rice, that's how we in south Africa grew up eating it 😍
I’m Nigerian and I’m subscribed to your channel…I’d love to see you cook Nigerian jollof rice
Or Akara or moi-moi and pap (Breakfast btw)
I made jollof rice once. It was so delicious
PS: i am Indian
Am Nigerian too,I think our main food is fufu🤣
hey!! I really love Nigerian people, they are really nice, kind and generous people... I am a Indian but I lived in Nigeria for like 3 years and I really loved the country.... and since I am a vegetarian I have only tasted the vegetarian food (which is not a lot) but I always love the jallof rice(which I ate with a Maggie cube), beans and rice and of course koose with the masala was my all time favorite dish... my mom still tries to make it but it never tastes like those we had there... I really miss it
Jollof rice slaps hard not gonna lie
You should try milktart, pap and vleis, bunnychow , poitjiekos, there are so many cultures in south africa so you should try the different types aswell
🎉 YESSSSS
It's melktert. Don't imperialise Afrikaans things please.
and pickle fish🎉🎉
I am not from South Africa I am from Detroit Michigan but I have made this quite a few times and I do love it, it is delicious❤
I am from South Africa and I love Bobotie but another national dish we have is "potjie kos" as wel as "braai vleis" ( we literally have a day dedicated to "braai vleis" on 24 September )
National snack will be unmatched. Biltong supremacy
@@KG45Brham verseker. Ek kan nie 'n week gaan daarsonder nie
Braai vleis is poeslike lekker
No bra. Don't let him make potjie. Potjie is one of those foods 90% of people can't make properly. Honestly if I'm at a get together i never eat the potjie, i taste it and it tastes any one or multiple of the colours in the kak spectrum of taste. because most people make a kak potjie. They all make a potjie to their tastes (which is usually bland or just generally kak) and not to make a universally good potjie. But he must try bunnychow or a kota for his cheap lunches videos.
Braai vleis ja dis amazing net amazing
I grew up on this stuff so it was very nostalgic to watch you making it 😂
I have eaten it many times 😊. National dish of SA, influenced by the Malay Javanese cusinie introduced by the labourers from Java .. brought to the cape by the Dutch VOC
As a South African, I have most definitely heard of this national dish before 😂😂. Great to see it get some well deserved love though 👍
These past few days I have been binge watching your videos and seeing your channel go 📈📈📈
When you're South African and you've never heard of Bobotie: Flop😅😅😅
And then, you realize that you're Zulu and Bobotie is more of an Afrikaans dish and you're like: ohhhh makes sense
Nope, Cape Malay.
@@TheDarrylsandler Yeah, the Cape Malay culture doesn't get enough recognition, even though its integral to Cape Town culture and food

Big within the afrikaana community but not so popular nationally and don’t think it deserves to be called national dish
That's wild, was definitely a dish I had often with many different families. I am Afrikaans and Cape Townian though, not sure if that's why. Maybe it more popular in some regions than others?
@@TheVivaciousNerd Maybe it's popular in Cape Town. Makes sense why he'd make this dish since a lot of tourists go and talk about Cape town and that's it.
Mmmmm almost every Sunday meal on the farm 🤤🤤🤤 Need to have a traditional SA women cook this for you 👌🏼🔥

I went hunting with my south African friend Leon. After a hard week of hunting, his family invited me in and fed me this dish as well as a few other south African dishes and I can tell you, it's 10/10, perfect warming dish. Great vid
can't wait to see what other dishes you come across in this series! Interested to see what you think of Falafel!
Yes! There so good 😩🤤🤌🏻
Although definitely a uniquely South African dish, I would hardly call it the national dish. More likely would be something like Pap.
As a chef, I’m loving these videos! Great idea for content, keep up the good work! 🔥
It usually is prepared with yellow rice, good job! it wasn't that far off from how we make it
This looked delicious 👏👏🔥
It's funny because I've lived all 21 years of my life in South Africa and I've never had bobotie and I'd really love to try it after watching you make it

Or most importantly braai. Like that's something I've had in every province of South Africa.
honestly, i agree with everyone here. we have many different dishes that could be a national dish. for a long time i thought pap wors and chakalaka was the national dish as its just very VERY popular in my area (btw, bobotie a cape town dish for those who dont know)
Considering I’m half South African I’ve never tried this before. Love your content and keep it up my friend
Love bobotie, it was one of the first dishes I had my mom cook for me after being out of South Africa for 5 years!
Well done 👏 ✔️ 😃 you did it perfectly. You can exchange the sultanas for dried apricots (apparently that's great, I haven't tried it yet). I subscribed a few days ago really enjoying your series. If you ever feel like trying it out, the first video I ever posted on my channel is a recipe for our 2 most traditional desserts combined. Malva pudding and milk tart, I'm sure you will love it
I love seeing him trying my home country dish but the way he pronounced it 😂
It sounded so off 😂😂😂
YAYYYY🎉 South African who just moved to the United States. Miss home a lot. I bought your cookbook! Thank you for featuring South Africa ❤
So excited to see my national dish here!!
With love from South Africa
😊 I'm South African and i heard about this but haven't had it. I'd love If you tried a mutton or chicken curry bunny😊 its part of things Indian culture here. Basically an unsliced loaf of bread cut in half or quarters- the inside partially removed and filled with curry with the fluffy white part put on top to break and eat. You have this with carrot, cucumber onion and chilli salad with vinegar dressing. Its a national favourite ❤
I studied at UND in the early eighties - and lived on all sorts of Bunny Chows 😋
Bunny’s should be the national dish… incredible food
National dishes I would reccomend:
1. Brazil's Feijoada. It's a hearty stew primarily composed of kidney bean, pork, beef and vegetables.
2. India's Biryani. It's a rice dish cooked with a variety of spices and meat.
3. Morocco's Tagine. It's a spicy chicken food with vegetables, and is commonly served with couscous.
4. Spain's Paella. It's a rice dish commonly topped with vegetables, seafood and chorizo (spicy spanish sausage).
5. Thailand's Pad Thai. It's a delicious noodle dish with scrambled eggs, bean sprouts, a sweet and sour sauce and meat (commonly chicken and/or seafood).
Hope these suggestions help you on your journey to ranking every national dish!
India does not have a national dish
The mix of ground beef, aromatic seasonings and sultanas immediately reminded me of "pastelitos cubanos", a salty-sweet small meat pie similar to middle-eastern sfihas. Pastelitos are filled with a mixture very similar to the bobotie you made, minus the eggs and the peach chutney.
By the way, I love your videos and get a lot of ideas from them for my everyday cooking.
I am Brazilian and my husband is Cuban, so our suggestion to you are Brazilian "feijoada" (black bean stew with lots of pork cuts, sausages, bacon, served with white rice, kale, and orange) and Cuban "ropa vieja" (beef cut shredded to after cooking, heavily seasoned with peppers, onions, garlic etc.) or "tamal en cazuela" (similar to a polenta, but made with fresh sweet corn reduced to a paste, cooked with lots of braised pork cuts inside).
I would also suggest the Brazilian "galinhada", a delicious chicken & rice dish, but I'm not sure you would be able to get the pequi fruit (Caryocar brasiliense), which is essential to make that dish.
subscribed to you because of this series, love seeing all the dishes around the world and waiting to see the syrian national dish on it! its called Kibbeh and there are many ways to prepare it, grilled or the ones cooked in the oven are best imo
I’m South African and have only had this about once or twice in my life, I think there’s many other dishes that would really represent 😁
Lord Jesus Christ is coming back everyone, please don’t worship celebrities and entertainment, focus on Him alone. I promise there’s more to life than money, partying, homosexuality and music. Hell is real, repent from sinning confess your sins and ask God to forgive you, I know He will if you’re sincere. Anyone who thinks the Name of Lord Jesus Christ is a joke, boldly mocks and scorns Him or takes pleasure in people who do is in for a big unpleasant surprise on judgement day IF they don’t repent and follow Lord Jesus Christ. Hell is very hot, people please repent! In the mighty name of Lord Jesus Christ, Amen 🙏💪✝️💜❤️✝️!
Idolatry such as, Islam, Catholicism, Sangomaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Santa Clausism, Confucianism, New Age, Science, Evolution, halloweenism, Harry Potterism, Politics, Donald Trumpism, Easter Bunnyism and other religions/faiths that are outside Biblical Christianity lead to hell! Don’t believe them, believe the Almighty God the Father of Lord Jesus Christ, who begot Him. Our Creator, The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is mighty, He doesn’t need a woman to beget a son, He is God. I choose to put my faith in a God who can do anything and everything, a God who has unlimited and infinite power to beget!
So, it’s time to confess that Lord Jesus Christ is the Lord and to believe that He died and rose from the grave after three days and you shall be saved if you only obey Him by praying, worshipping, praising, reading the Bible and living holy and righteously according to the Bible. You have to endure until the end, carry your cross daily and build your relationship with God by following Lord Jesus daily until the end. You must never renounce your faith in The Lord Jesus Christ, there’s hell awaiting those who reject/deny Lord Jesus Christ and those who continue living sinfully, even the Christians who don’t want to repent will face the same fate, so please repent beloved people, in Lord Jesus Christ’s mighty and precious Name, Amen.
and it sucks! omg I would rather eat krimmel pap

I lived in Botswana,, (as well as a spell in South Africa), for many years before returning to the UK and while in South Africa, I qualified as a chef and Bobotie is one of the very best dishes from the extremely varied cuisine of South Africa. It is a very worthwhile addition to anyone's list of favourite recipes, so if you have never tried it, give it a go, its worth it and very easy to prepare. If you want something really different, try Seswaa, the national dish of Botswana.

Definitely the best South African dish. One of the most asked for dish from my American friends when I cook for them.
Nice, bobotie tastes great, usually, when I was a kid we used to eat it on Sundays or when we go out to family,a nice meal with chicken for me lol, glad you like it 💙
Have you tried my country, Mexico's national dish? Probably would be Mole, pronounced Mo'leh, its a Chili sauce that incorporates spices, chocolate, a stale baguette, a tostada(dried tortilla)all ground up on a stone metate, pronounced: meh-tah-teh, once simmered, preferably over a wood or charcoal fire in a bracero, you sear originally turkey but now chicken, in a frying pan, take them out of the pan and into the cooking pot to finish cooking in the hot mole, served with rice and beans and eatened with corn tortillas, its always served at most weddings, baptisms, birthdays and also just for the heck of it, because it is so good. Bobotie, definitely worth trying here, thanks for sharing KWOOWK, 👍and greetings👋from central Mexico.😊

Bobotie appears to be a variant of patinam ex lacte, a dish documented by the ancient Roman writer Apicius consisting of layers of cooked meat, pine nuts, and seasoned with pepper, celery seeds and asafoetida. These were cooked until the flavours had blended, when a top layer of egg and milk was added. When the latter had set, the dish was ready to be served. C. Louis Leipoldt, a South African writer and gourmet, wrote that the recipe was known in Europe in the seventeenth century.
A bay leaf is an herb that gives flavor to food. That nipple coming out of the garlic is the sprout. I think you should brown the meat before you add water to the pan because steamed ground meat is not nearly as good as sautéed ground meat. I love your videos! Thanks for showing us all kinds of the things.
this looks so delicious!! guess i have to make peach chutney now...
I love bobotie, thank you for trying some of our culture
You should make it with salsa and banana salad, and with the yellow rice some raisins, and then when your eating you mix it all up and it is chief's kiss.

I am Australian. I have heard of bobotie and eaten it on several occasions. We have a lot off people from South Africa in Australia. People from Capetown, people from Durban, people from Jo’burg, even people from Pretoria and Bloemfontein. I think one lady I worked with only spoke Afrikaans when she first came to Australia.
Dankie meneer kwook for making the food of my country
I remember eating this as a child, my mom is a cook and makes the most wonderful food.
It's basically a curried meatloaf. We make it about 6 x a year. There are lots of methods but we do not cook the meat before baking. It's awesome served with yellow rice or mashed potatoes ❤.
You have to try Mansaaf, the national dish of Jordan.
1. Slow cooked lamb/goat in a flavorful broth
2. Stewed in a yogurt sauce with the same flavorful broth
3. Place rice on a huge flatbread
4. Place meat on top
5. Cover it with the amazing sauce
6. Use the flatbread to eat the dish dipping it in extra yogurt sauce
Bay leaves "even though I still have no idea what they do to food" 😂 😂😂
I'm soon happy you made my country's dish
Picking just one dish as South Africa's "national dish" is somewhat of a misrepresentation of the nation, especially if you're choosing Bobotie, one of the most regional "exclusive" dishes in the country.
A true 'national dish' for South Africa would be a smorgenbord of culinary delights highlighting the cultural melting pot that is this amazing, beautiful country.
That said... good job on making and trying Bobotie. Solid content. Next up, boerewors, biltong, melktert, malva pudding. Oh, and Ultramel Custard... still blows my mind that Ultramel Custard is a uniquely South African thing.
Finally, and also of the best dishes here as well.comment is someone speaks Afrikaans
