I had a bad flare of malassezia folliculitis in December and since it was along my chin and neck no one believed me and thought it was bacterial acne. They gave me antibiotics, which if I had taken them would have made it so much worse. I remembered your older videos and watched back and was able to get it under control until I saw a dermatologist! Thank you for your continued willingness to teach us ❤
What did you do ?
how did it get better?
Been dealing with similar situation- why are there so many doctors who won’t listen to you or believe you. It’s ridiculous. Or refuse certain services or medications BASED ON WHAT YOUR INSURANCE WILL PAY FOR NOT WHAT THE PATIENT NEEDS. Healthcare is such a joke in this country.
How did you get rid of it
How u solve this issue?? I have the same dilemma. Please write me back.
What an incredibly informative video. Very much appreciated!
Thank you Dr Dray!!!
The info I gleaned from this video will help me GREATLY now and when I go to the😮 Dermatologist next month. Pretty much looks like I've been plagued with Malassezia Folliculitis (Fungal acne). Flares up suddenly out of the blue for seemingly no reason. However, I HAVE been on a lot of antibiotics over the last 18mo. from multiple Diverticulitis/UTI flare ups, C-diff and COVID causing yeast overgrowth. I look back and think a lot of the problem has been caused by Antibiotics and Stress all along.
Thanks again and have a blessed day!!!😁
You are superb...stay blessed and thank you for updating regarding skin issues....❤
Thank you Dr Dray, we learn so much from you everyday 😊
Thanks for the video! Everything makes much more sense now. I have a spinal cord injury and developed seborrheic derm about 6 months later. Never would’ve guessed that was possibly correlated. I have a very difficult time getting rid of it
same here. ACDF spine operation years ago....roscea for years following! I tired head and shoulders shampoo on my face yesterday for the first time, and almost instantly, it began to reduce the inflammation!
Thanks for the education Dr Dray 💗
Much better mic than that RODE one, love your video production (and of course the derm info). :)
I'm always learning something new from you. I know dogs can have skin yeast infections but never knew this could affect people too. Very interesting topic. Thanks as always, Dr Dray. Happy Friday!! Hope you, your sweet momma and little Tybee have a fun weekend. 💙
I recommend putting conditioner on the ends of your hair before you use dandruff shampoo on your scalp. It will protect your ends from getting too dry. If your shampoo is really stripping, you could put a little more conditioner on your ends after you rinse it out. You can also add argan oil to your ends before you wash your hair and proceed as typical.
I wash my hair a lot and it's become dry. I don't have time to do a weekly oil treatment (which helps), so I love this idea of adding conditioner to the ends of the hair while shampooing with shampoo. I'm going to try it the next time I shower! Thank you!
@@czechmatey
You can also oil your ends, before you wash your hair. No need, to let the oil sit on the hair for long, or to use an expensive oil. All it does, is to protect the more delicate and damaged parts of your hair from excessive stripping.
Go ahead and do some experiments with conditioner, a hair mask and different oils, you have on hand. It all depends on your hair and also your shampoo. You just have to find the right combination of products.
@@czechmatey make sure your shampoo and conditioner are pH balanced (around 3.5-5.5) and turn your shower water to lukewarm/cool when you’re rinsing off your conditioner just before getting out of the shower… those are easy ways to improve the health of your hair. If you are shampooing once or more per day, you also may only really need to shampoo your scalp area (so don’t intentionally bring your shampoo down to your mid lengths/ends and see if it makes a difference).
@@smushface3999 I've been employing this as well (not bringing my shampoo all the way down to the ends) and it's helping. I do frequently wash my hair and it was taking a toll since we have extremely hard water here. Thank you!
@@raraavis7782 I use Valvoline, it's cheap, $30 for 5 litres

I was just diagnosed with this a couple days ago. Mine presented on the sides and under my nose. I've been under a great deal of stress which is what the dermatologist surmised was the trigger. Treatment successful, itching stopped literally overnight and now I'm following the course of treatment to get rid of it.

Very helpful information! I will try your suggestion for my stubborn tinea versicolor… They prescribe the k meds. But I was afraid to use it since I don’t know what it is. But I’m going to try this. It goes away like you said in the winter, unless I wear a scarf or something to trigger this. Also eating less sugar I noticed helps. But I also notice some things trigger it like scents. Especially strong scents in hair products. So I’ve been looking for products especially for hair wo scent. Hair products wo strong scent is sort of difficult to find. It’s getting a bit easier though, but they are not as effective. Perfumes, even natural ones can trigger it for me too. Best
Happy weekend Dr Dray...see you tomorrow x💙🤩
thank you so much, this is very helpful!!
I can't thank you enough for this video
I have seborrheic dermatitis, tried it all to get rid of it (when I had a bout of it). Only the 2% ketaconazole (Nizoral) helped me. It is OTC here in Belgium and we only have the 2% on the market. But before I discovered this (together with my derm), it took a while. My dad? Same. My mom, oddly enough can do 2 months before her hair gets oily. Seriously. She is white. Our internist once said to just go with it, not wash too much. She is 77 and has fared well so far doing just that. In any case, IMHO ketoconazole is one of a kind. It's been good to me, still is!
it kinda stopped working for me, id like to find an actual fix instead of drugs n stuff :(
@@SuperBranFlakez ketoconazole = a "fix" in essence, it is "how you treat it".
I an hoping to identify the stuff on my face- thank you as usual! Happy Friday! 💜💜💜

Hi dr Dray! why is it that malassezia thrives in hot, humid environments and when there's too much oil production, but conditions like seborrheic dermatitis flare up in the winter when it's actually less humid and the skin is less oily? I am at my wits end trying to control my seb derm after being on long term oral antibiotics due to a life-threatening bacterial infection😞 I am wondering if I should discuss accutane as an option with my derm for the seb derm? since so many of the topical ointments I've been prescribed have helped only minimally and the condition recurs once I discontinue their use
Would love a video on perioral dermatitis
She has one
Can you do a version of this video for candida yeast types? I actually presented for a prolonged period of time with yeast infections while I was being treated with a complex series of antibiotics. Because I didn’t have any presentation other than external skin symptoms - and because I wasn’t told to look for it - I really did have to go through infectious disease to find out that candida was perpetuating half of my problem and to finally have it explained to me when to seek treatment!!
What did you do for treatment
This would be great!
@@lisagardner4814following
What was the solution?
I Get seb Dermatits on scalp, sides of nose and above eyebrows. The only thing that keeps it at bay during a flare up is Nizoral 2% cream.
I have perioral dermatitis and use Soolantra. I find that when I have a reaction ketoconazole works best.
This was very informative! I would greatly appreciate another video with recommended products and skincare routines for sebderm! I’m not sure if retinols can help with it but my sebderm seems to be much better on it? Idk if that’s just make believe or there’s science to back that up though. 😅 I also feel like cutting out fluoride has improved my skin issues a lot. It’s apparently recommended to improve psoriasis so it might be similar.
Maybe check out her video on sebderm from a couple years ago.
I'm also wondering if niacinamide would help. It does good controlling oil on my face!
Niacynamide is amazing 4 it.
Dr Dray, what would you say about insulin spike driven seb derm / dandruff or psorasis? Have you ever stumbled upon such cases? I’ve read something about that on PubMed and I happen to suffer from insulin resistance

Years of antibiotics for acne left me with fungal folliculitis. It was misdiagnosed as hormonal acne for years. Scalp, face, neck, back & chest. The years of antibiotics created a vitamin k deficiency, gut imbalance, weight gain, and fungal folliculitis. It's really difficult to reverse the damage caused by the antibiotics.
What have you tried? I’m assuming probiotics and fiber is the only options
@s21972012145525 oral antifungal, Chinese medicine, probiotics, prebiotics, vitamins, diets...the problem is that years of antibiotics change your liver, gut biome and skin biome. Ultimately, your immune system is affected with the skin and intestines being the huge parts of your immune system.
@@bbilgers8686have you seen any improvements yet? I have the same stuff going on
Try eating/ drinking aloe Vera gel. It does wonders healing your gut 👍 I personally have improved my gut a lot by doing that regularly. 😊

Hi Dr. Dray. This is my first comment. My concern is sweating after slugging. I have extremely dry acne prone sensitive skin but I use tretinoin as well (mainly dry because of it) please recommend something.
Don’t slug on tret. And if it’s making you sweat switch to a cream
Could you do a video on hydrogels and surfactant based hydrogels such as Plurogel? I’m wondering if they have any purpose outside of wound dressings. I have some from a burn I got and was wondering if it could have other cosmetic uses because it says “tissue regeneration” on the tube.
Can you do a followup video on cures/things to help the acne around your mouth and nose?
You should try intermittent fasting! I’m doing it now and when I say, the candida/yeast has been able to subside.

I had this while on dupixent. That and blepharitis. My derm didn't really recognize it as a side effect. :-( However, I convinced her I should move on and so now I'm on rinvoq and it's the best thing ever.
Yeah the head and neck dermatitis side effect was not reported in the initial clinical trials with dupixent, but now that we have been using it for awhile, it is clear that a subset of people definitely develop this, and it seems to be related to malassezia
There’s another drug same class of dupixent that doesn’t target have the malesezzia issue. I think it’s by abbot but I’m not sure. Another derm dr talks about it came after dupixent and people that had that malesezzia issue saw results.
That being said, how did you like dupixent? I’m strongly considering it
I have seborrheic dermatitis and it has caused Seborrheic Blepharitis. I have been dealing with this for over a year but only discovered the seborrheic dermatitis connection recently.
The 6% salicylic acid cradle cap lotion that I recently purchased (to chemically exfoliate my feet), has come in very handy. I use it on my face (to clear pores) and also have been applying it to a small area on my arm on which the skin was dry and slightly red. It flared up occasionally & became itchy (normally after I had even a small amount of alcohol)! Anyway, after GPs tellingly me that it wasn't anything to worry about (because it wasn't cancer), this oil based salicylic lotion has seemed to have finally calmed the area. I don't know whether the problem will return if I stop applying the SA lotion, but so far so good.
👱♀️❤
What's the name of the lotion? So far I've only found 2 and 3% SA
That’s a pretty high percentage otc
"Egozite Cradle Cap Lotion". It is manufactured by Ego Pharmaceuticals (Australia). I have been using it on my face (to keep pores clear and on my feet (to keep them soft). Now I am also using it to shave my upper bikini line, and then applying it afterwards to prevent red bumps & ingrown hairs. It has a serum like consistency, so gives a very smooth shave and doesn't block the razor. It is only AU$6.95 for 50mls.
It is meant for babies, so it is gentle on my skin too.

CLN wash works amazing for this. It was recommended by my own derm a few years ago but I continue to use to keep these skin issues under control.
Price? I have a tiny sample size my derm gave. I’m scared of looking at the price though
What’s CLN
I had seborrheic dermatitis (eyebrows, glabella and near the nose crevices) and my dermatologist method was cleansing (used bioderma sensibio foaming gel the pink scented one 😂❤) and then travacort (Isoconazole nitrate (1%) +Diflucortolone valerate (0.1%) ) for seven days and then stop it but alongside with it i also used elidel cream (pimecrolimus) but i didn't have to stop it like the steroid cream travacort 😅 and of course i used bioderma sensibio Ds+ cream for moisturizing my face plus it was also for the seborrheic dermatitis 😅❤. Now I'm cured and thank god well 😊❤. Thanks for the malassezia info doctor take care ❤.

How long did it take to see effects? How long did your derm suggest you to use the elidel cream?
@@thanosfield2642how long have you been off of Ellidell? I find protopic both extremely hard to start and extremely hard to stop

If you possibly have fungal acne is it ok to use fermented skincare products?
Zinc supplements has helped my seb derm on my nose. Also my scalp isn’t as inflamed anymore. Just 15mg everyday! Could be placebo effect but never know what could help.
Really ? Cab you tell me which type of zinc you took?
@@lisagardner4814 it was 15mg pills but they haven’t been as effective lately. I know longer feel itchy and inflamed but still have flakes.
I had to self diagnose this as malassezia folloculitis because multiple doctors diagnosed it incorrectly! They thought it was atopic dermatitis, an allergy to something, sensitive skin, or eczema.
Since working out what was actually the problem, due to certain signs such as itching a lot after sweating, and hypopigmentation in eyebrow hairs, and little bumps similar to keratosis pilaris and a papular type rash, and the fact I was prone to fungal nail infection and chronic athletes foot, I started using diluted tea tree oil, tea tree oil soap, and ketoconazole.
Guess what, a massive difference after 4 weeks of treatment! I have suffered with this for more than 3 years and finally after being given incorrect advice from dermatologists and GPs, and prescribed steroids and unsuitable treatments, luckily I decided to self diagnose myself and hoping I am on the road to recovery ❤
Did it ever go away?
@@iriskeniafernandez5647 yes in 4 weeks it's improved a lot, I no longer get an itching face when I sweat! I use squalane to cleanse and Vaseline to improve my moisture barrier and help my skin heal. Not 100% yet but I try to keep the fungus at bay with ketoconazole wash once every week or 10 days, and also occasionally tea tree oil diluted in squalane. It's taking some time to clear completely especially from the back of my shoulders but I am just happy I'm heading in the right direction 😊
Can you please share your routine with this products ?

Leave for around 8 mins before rinsing off.
Repeating once a week.
Can also use selsun medicated shampoo alternately if desired.
Using Sainsbury's tea tree oil glycerin soap for sensitive skin during bathing.
I have dry skin so moisturising after bathing using squalane and vaseline.
Before bed: mixing 15 drops squalane to 1 drop tea tree and apply topically to affected areas.
Using 2% ketoconazole cream topically on affected areas daily for 2 weeks then every other day.
Also treat fungal nail using drop of tea tree oil on cotton square on nail and cover with plaster overnight. Also fungal nail paint during day if desired. Keep nails short and clean.
Sticking to only olive squalane to oil cleanse and remove makeup. Wipe off with cotton pad. Moisturise only with olive squalane and vaseline to maintain moisture barrier at night.
Check all SPF, foundation and make up products to make sure they have only malassezia safe ingredients.
Continue routine with malassezia safe products until symptoms clear then introduce some other moisturizer back cautiously if desired e.g. aveeno moisturising cream for myself.
Continue Nizoral shampoo wash once a week as maintenance.
Also after sweating during exercise, making sure to shower as soon as possible after finishing exercise with tea tree oil glycerin soap.

Maybe check out the video, starting tretinoin: what to use & avoid. She goes over different skincare items to use including moisturizers. She's also got a video, best moisturizers to use with retinol, that could be helpful.
Maybe this could help, I went full keto (no dirty keto) as in 20g< sugar per day and NO breads, none. Not even things with flour. Malassezia went away completely. Fast forward I added flour products like tortillas, I was ok, but as soon I resumed bread, boom it came back. Thanks for the info, Dr. Dray.
So should I not be putting Vaseline on my face if it thrives in oil?
I’ve been diagnosed with rosacea and nothing seems to work. Looks and sounds more like this.
I have had an odd single 1”x1” patch approx 1cm lateral to the commissure of the mouth. The confluent rash looks like under the surface bumps very small and red slightly pustule like and have been trying to determine if this could be a yeast issue or perioral dermatitis.
If it was a yeast issue would I see spreading in the past month that it has been persisting? It has not spread beyond this particular space.
I live in a northern community with no access to a dermatologist or even a doctor so have not been able to peruse any help.
Treatments for each of these seem to negatively affect the other should the condition be misdiagnosed?
@ 3:11 Seborrheic dermatitis - nasal region, middle of the brow.....build up dandruff....excessive yeast...autoimmune system due to UI Colitis
I think this must be what’s going on with the skin fold by my right nostril. I use tretinoin at night, so I thought the skin was cracking there from that. However, I have no irritation from the tretinoin anywhere else on my face, and my skin fold on the other nostril is fine. Can I use ketoconazole and tretinoin at the same time?
My derm prescribed me low dose doxycycline for my acne for i think too long, i stopped taking it because of the stomach upset, as soon as i stopped taking it, I've been struggling with my seb derm and folliculitis 🤷♂️ would regular benzoyl peroxide use also keep both conditions at bay?
Bpo will definitely help the acne and folliculitus. I’m not familiar with seb derm so I can’t comment regarding that. I would try it once a week, then 2x/week for two weeks, etc in a specific area on the body to monitor your results
Hi Dr. Dray! I have a seriously yeast skin problem, (Malassezia) I've been trying to control it for months but I can't. I see many doctors but I still have an oily skin problem. (I read your videos, yeast feeds on oil). I've spots on my forehead and nose due to malassezia. I need your help.
I deal with SebDerm and roeseca I’ve been doing allergy shots, because I’m allergic to Texas, for a year and I’ve seen a difference in them. My flare ups don’t extend as far and aren’t a severe.
Living in a subtropical climate with extra oil glands (thanks dad)and hyperhydrosis of the scalp means my SebDerm is stubborn as all get out.
I really want to start allergy shots!!!! So scared though. My eczema is pretty bad 😢
@@21972012145525 They tiny use insulin needles and it goes into fat.I can't feel it though at times I had they coldness from the alcohol wipe.I'm allergic to my state so they have calmed my immune system.
Moved to Texas 2 years ago and I’ve never had this condition until moving here.
What about people with eczema and itcthyosis vulgaris? It seems I have no oils in my skin, it’s dry dry dry. The flaking isn’t caused by this? Is it possible to have multiple issues causing flaky skin? No matter how much I try to control my skin is still flaky. I use lac Hydrin, cerava it’s just so embarrassing
How can you determine if what you are struggling with is a flare up of facial eczema or face and neck dermatitis?
Go see a dermatologist.
