  • If you have not played MGS2 before or just want to experience this epic game again then this video might be for you.
The story revolves around the "Big Shell", a massive offshore clean-up facility that has been seized by a group of terrorists that call themselves "Sons of Liberty". They demand a massive ransom in exchange for the life of the President of the United States, and threaten to destroy the facility and create a cataclysmic environmental disaster if their demands are not met. The motives and identities of many of the antagonists and allies change rapidly, as the protagonists discover a world-shaking conspiracy constructed by a powerful organization known as the Patriots.

I remember when this game came out so many people were disappointed. The plot was a convoluted mess and fans felt trolled into playing as Raiden instead of Snake. But looking back you can see this game was truly ahead of its time.

As fans we were invested in Solid Snake as a playable character and the hero but raiden was a brat and confused from the beginning and to watch Solid hide in plain site and not know what he is up to or play him sucked. No way around it. This story is complex to say the least.

I didn't mind Raiden other than it took me a while to get over not playing as Snake. But as a character he's more of a "real" person, while Snake is a super soldier. Easier to identity with.

With seeing the last 20 years of world's progress, it gives you context in what the story of this game was about. The convoluted mess that it was back then when we had no context or references for what it was telling us. To replay it and have context to all the info it was giving us, the story made total fucking sense now and it scares the shit outta you.

@kiknya fuck you Everyone played this game back in 2001 when they were little kids 8-14 years old. At that time you had no context to it because you didn't know about the world and how it works. Thats what I saying. Now when we all are older and witnessing this happening in the last 20 years, we understood what it was convey. What little kid you know that plays this at the time would read Platos The Cave or 1984 in their spare time and digest it. quit being a dick and you yourself missed the context of what we are talking about in this thread.

@@MaintenexLLC At the time, it was commentary on how the internet unleashed a sea of 'experts', 'truth-seekers', or more accurately, the raw id of greater society. The liberty of near-total anonymity gave us the power to say what we really thought, or at least, what was most self-gratifying to say without constraint. This resulted not in a new age enlightenment (how social media evolved into its deeply troubling state today is proof enough of that) but the creation of a paradox as people formed into ideological bubbles and cliques, or as Rosemary put it 'ponds'; Scores of people all talking past each other rather than to one another.
Hence, "No one is invalidated, but nobody is right."
Hideo Kojima is largely a hack in his writing but here, of all the batshit crazy things that to happen in Sons of Liberty, of all the preachy bullshit he crammed into the game as a series of "plot twists", he was actually spot-on in regards to that issue. If I'm being completely fair though, he wasn't the only person to do so, or the first; not even in video game form. (Deus Ex in particular springs to mind)
Anyway, I hope that clears that up.

The bro-moment between Snake and Otacon is so much more deep to me now seeing it as an adult. Snake and Otacon met by chance; Snake needed him during the Shadow Moses mission. It's evident they soon become friends, perhaps Snake's closest and truest friend. Snake telling Otacon to rescue the hostages instead of, what most people would do, offer comfort and console, is actually indicative of how deep their friendship is. He obviously grieves with him, but he's keeping Otacon busy to help keep his mind off Emma's passing.
The hand shake just cements it. Snake is perhaps one of the most emotionally cold and closed off people alive, yet he allows a moment of sheer love and comraderie to his friend, even in the middle of a dangerous mission. It's nuances like this that make this game and series so incredible.

Watching this the other day, and was taken back by how accurate the themes and messages are for today's world. Being drowned in information where the truth is always contorted by the victors in history hits home in a scary way nowadays. I was only a kid back then, but I felt more scared of this game than I did the actual horror games at the time. I played and beaten it so many times that when it became more apparent about what was happening in terms of information control, corruption, government, technology and apps, and how the media chose to cover topics that either exacerbated or hid news, I thought of the final codec call. Even more scary, is that it's getting worse and we see it unfold before our very eyes.

Even the subtle changes in the character models there, Raiden's eyes narrow, growing feral, more cutting and direct. Rose flailing, at a kind of emotional loss. To be fair, fake news has existed for a long time. You were introduced to it as schoolyard rumors. You know, like Mew and the truck? The Internet was simply the next platform of media for fake news to be produced on. Hell, you could make up whatever on the Internet about yourself and get away with it.
People only read what they want to hear, then it gets spread. The Internet makes that faster.

Raiden represents not himself in this game, but you. The one who is playing the game and holding the controller. Think about it. Raiden is young, clueless to what is going on, a fanboy of Snake, doing this mission to try to be like snake and YOUR name on his dog tags in the end of the game.

Overall this is the best game ever created. Almost 20 years later and it's still flawless. The overall theme is relevant into today's societies. Political corruption along with mind manipulation and the wide spread of digital information being tampered with and misrepresented. I hold this game close to my heart and feel Kojima was conveying a very deep message not just to people but especially young Americans. Japan has always been a culture looking from the outside in on America. I feel there is a deep message for Americans in this game in particular. At least that's how I feel. Kojima knew young kids were playing this game and used the platform to make people think about what's going on and the importance of our lives. This game goes beyond video games. Best game of all time easy.

It's so sad to see all the hate on Raiden. One of the strongest themes in the MG series was child soldiers, and I really enjoyed the addition of a main character who comes from that background. Not to mention the fact that when you meet up with Snake, he seems even more cool just because you don't get to play as him. I love Snake, but after seeing so much of him for 3 games at the time this game came out, Raiden was a breath of fresh air, and ultimately made us love Snake more when we came back to him later. Say what you will about Raiden, but his existence only fleshes out the series and makes the badass Snake look even more badass.

    • @nebulosa553
      @nebulosa553 4 года назад +6

Exactly. That was the whole point of Raiden- to make you view the Hero, Solid Snake, from a perspective that you didn't have before. This is literally the concept Kojima came up with for the story- that you are an outsider looking in.

Let me tell you something man. I was only 5 years old when this game dropped. I only played it for the fun and little understanding of the plot for mgs 2. Now much much wiser and older. Little stuff like stilman teaching life lessons from Fatman. Raiden being brainwashed by vr training just like kids Irl having amazing gaming gun skills joining the military later in life. The list goes on how the fucking mastermind of Hideo Kojima is . I want to sit down with this man and asked him how the hell did he come up with this and what the hell inspired this man. The whole mgs plot is mind blowing. Funny how time flies after 18 years. But going through mgs saga much older now its all starting to make sense!
Best part is how real the politics are in this game is beyond futuristic. There's something we should know that Kojima is hiding from us.
A fucking masterpiece and life lesson of my generation.

3:51:40 Can't believe how people don't never appreciate this moment. Here we see what makes Raiden who he is, why he is more interesting than Solid since he is a newbie with more traumas and doubts. His voice cracks because he's at his most vulnerable. We never saw Snake like that. I get goose bumps everytime he says "Now I know why I was chosen for this mission. No one can take him on-- no one can take him down-- except me. I've been kept alive this long for this. I knew, as soon as I saw Solidus".

In terms of life lessons, this game is the most important out of all the Metal Gears. What President Johnson said about the Wisemen's Committee, what Arsenal's AI said to Raiden before the Solidus fight, Solid Snake's speech to Raiden at the end of MGS2 about the meaning of life etc. How life is about more than just passing on your genes and how you pave your own future.
All of it is incredibly believable and teaches the player what movies, music, school, college and uni won't. The game helps to teach you things that you're supposed to figure out on your own. My experience is amplified because of the sentimental value MGS2 has to me due to the circumstances when I first played it. It makes it very personal so if anyone was to badmouth this game I'd automatically get defensive, haha.
I first played this game through 100% at 4 years of age when it was first released, it was the first video game I played. Even though I didn't understand it all, as I grew up all the information kind of unlocked. Now at the age of 17 I wait for MGSV with a mind more open and awake than your average teenager, if that makes any sense.
This game series is a blessing but mainly this very game. Fate works wonders through life sometimes. I feel this game defined how I think and use logic today and I'm glad.

MGS 1 - The Original, Metal Gear in it’s purest form, just a cool ass game with unforgettable characters
MGS 2 - The Philosophy, distressingly prophetic and extremely well written.
MGS 3 - The Cold War Movie
MGS 4 - The Feels, watching Old Snake do it one last time is an adventure I’ll never forget. Nostalgia hits HARD the entire game and the game is so self referential that I can’t help but be in awe of it.
I love that MGS never duplicated itself after 1. You thought you were getting the ideal Snake back for the perfect sequel in 2. Nope, you play as a fanboy who wants to be him.
3? Nah, young version of his dad.
4, sure you get him back, but he’s a decaying shell of himself. It’s excellent because no one stays young forever and Snake is no exception. He’s an old hero with his glory days long past and he still finds a way to get it done.
Also I find it unsettling how MGS 2 is almost an exact parallel of MGS 1 if you look at what happens
