I discovered Paul Harrell around a year ago. It didn’t take long to realize what I had in front of me. So, not wanting to miss out on anything this man has to say about anything, I went back to his first video and began watching forward. Before I am done, I plan to watch every video this man has made. Don’t want to miss a single word…

Excellent review (as always. In my line of work, I find that I will consistently carry a pocket 380 but, not a compact 9mm. I enjoy the idea of "deep concealment" and also enjoy the comfort of a light carry pistol.

The extended mag that came with my LCP II holds 7 and fits my hand much better than the 6 round mag. I don't mind the recoil and I think part of that may be that the extra length of the mag affords a better grip and gives more control as well. Because of it's size I carry it every day, something I definitely can't say for my 9mm sub compact.

I just purchased the LC9s. I did a lot of study and finally replaced my .38 snub nose. I can comfortably carry a gun this size. I previously purchased a m&p compact and it was too big. Program compliance is absolutely the most important thing! The couch commandos don't understand this.

I bought the Lc9s 9mm pro. No safety, great trigger very good price it's my EDC carry weapon. Have complete faith in this life saving weapon. 9 mm easy to hip carry. Yes I know the Lc9 had a bad trigger. But I waited and Ruger came through. With the Lc9s 9mm pro. Put a Houge Handball slip on grip. Got the 9 rd extended mag. It's perfect now. Maybe a Galloway up grade for the long hall. Buy one! Maybe a Ec9. Cheaper. Shawn

@@shawnbeck2303 I've been thinking about getting something smaller. I either carry a Springfield xd mod2 3.3" 9mm or a Springfield xde 3.3" 9mm. The xde is kinda big for a single stack, I was thinking maybe a Smith&Wesson Shield 9mm. I've got a little Raven Arms. 25 acp but it's not reliable enough for self-defense, in my opinion. I like the size of the LCP but they have a snappy recoil impulse in 9mm.

I'm sticking with my LC9s over the LC9 Pro. I prefer to have manual safeties. My only complaint about the 9s is the stupid magazine safety but that's easily solved by removing it. I have been strongly considering replacing the LCP with an LCP II though.

Well, everyone is pretty much saying what is obvious here. *Excellent* presentation all around. Thank you Paul for making these videos. If I was to take it a step further, I'm learning to have more respect for the .380. I also see the advantage of a smaller hand gun as far as concealment. Less recoil for better control as well.

Another informative video, thanks! Especially appreciated the final point: Which gun are you more likely to ALWAYS carry, and never leave at home. That was a major factor when I chose a .380, last year. I spend a good deal of time around the beach, so choosing a gun that I would be comfortable with in shorts or swim trunks certainly was important to me. The gun you carry is always more effective than the one you leave locked away at home.

Pretty good vid Paul. I own the LC9s pro and I love it. I'm a smaller/ave sized guy at 5'8" about 160lbs and I think for 75% of my pants the lc9 fits just fine. but I have handled a lcp a few times and it is unbelievably small, I would be able to carry it wherever whenever and its all about being armed at all times. other than that capacity is fine on the lcp for 99% of the cases. Ballistics is the only thing I would worry about with the 380 but after researching diff loads I have found out there a plenty of highly effective hallow points. I would totally carry the lcp2 where I wouldn't feel like carrying a lc9s or glock 43.

  • @shawnbeck2303
    @shawnbeck2303 5 лет назад +1

Paul, I am a big guy. 6'3 235. My fingers and hands are bigger too. I chose the Lc9s 9mm pro. No SAFETY! It can shoot with one round in and mag out. I put a Houge Handball Jr. Grip on mine. The grip on the Lc9s 9mm pro is a bit thin. But I like it. The gun was just not exactly what I needed. But the grip made it perfect. Never been a .380 fan but you showed me that it is a very good round for self defense. I chose the 9mm over the .380 for more powerful rounds. The .380 sized pistol but in 9mm is what I was after. The great trigger of 4.8 pounds puts the Lc9s Pro over the top. The old lc9 got a bad rap.
Because of the double action trigger pull. I did my home work when the Lc9s 9mm pro came out sold my XDS sub compact in 9mm and a SR22 to buy the Ruger. I did like the XDS sub compact. But it just wasnt what I wanted in a EDC carry pistol. Now the Ec9 has come out. Ruger hit it on the head! I am also buying the PC9 take down 9mm carbine for a bug out bag carbine it will fit in my pack and its 9mm also. Now I am ready. Not scared but ready. Thanks, Paul and thanks Ruger. Shawn

Great comparison. I have carried both, and while the LC9 requires some sort of holster for comfortable carry, the LCP II (a well as it's predecessors - I currently carry a LCP Custom) will fit into a shirt pocket or the back pocket of your jeans.
The LCP is strictly a "defensive" weapon, designed for use that is "up close and personal." A modern day "belly gun." Same could be said for the LC9, but… the LC9 is just big enough to potentially prove useful in an "offensive" situation, should the need arise. Not ideal, but by no means inadequate.
For those wondering - and something I have yet to see fully explained on RUclips: What are the differences between the original LCP, the "2nd Generation" LCP, the LCP Custom and the LCP II?
1: The original LCP - No discernible sights and a FULL double action trigger pull. After each shot the hammer would return to the full-down position.
2: the "Second Generation." Marginally better sights and the fact that each cycle of the slide left the hammer at the half-cock position, making the trigger pull somewhat shorter and subsequently easier.
3: LCP Custom. MUCH larger sights (with a potential for snagging), aluminum anodized trigger that reduced perceivable trigger pull and trigger reset. Still, hammer at half-cock at the end of each cycle.
4: LCPII: Glock type trigger safety. Unlike previous LCP's, the slide locks back after the last round. Most important feature of the LCPII is the fact that is is now a "single action only" pistol. After each fired round the hammer returns to the "full cock" position, making the trigger pull much shorter and lighter that the previous LCP offerings.
Again, thank you for y our informative video. I enjoyed it!!

Sorry to disagree. A pocket gun also needs to be shot at least up to 7 yds. And a pocket gun requires frequent and diligent practice. You under estimate the gun. And forget the LCPll, it is a very dangerous gun for EDC. Trigger is ridiculous. There are better pocket guns out there, Get a Kahr or Pico. Much better build quality, milder to shoot, great sights etc.

Judging by the recoil flip-up and muzzle blast, it looks like the 9mm is a far more powerful round, yet it didn't penetrate significantly more. I have large hands so my concern has always been if the LCP is too small and hard to control in hand. It looked like the 9mm was more out of control, which I'm used to, so maybe the .380 is easier to handle with the weaker charge, in spite of it's size. It sure fits nicely in a pocket, but most mis-fires occur when grabbing or re-holstering a gun - which is why I like a thumb-sweep safety that's handy until I start to point.
I have a LC9s, love it, with the 9 rd extended mag for a full-size grip, yet still a nice tuck along the body. It's short enough so IWB kydex holster doesn't poke into your leg when sitting down. Very comfortable, yet 10 rd capacity. Most mis-fires are guns without external safeties. Any pocket pistol should be protected in a pocket holster.

Mr. Harrell I find myself going & listening to your reviews again & again. Thanks for your time! My home defense is a Maverick 88 12ga w/ 00 Buck - personal carry is still my Ruger P95. People laugh, but your insight has kept these 2 guns as my bet your life go to guns.

Thanks for this post, it’s been most helpful. I’ve been considering the LC9 but have a LCP .380 I wasn’t sure the .380 was enough power for self defense. You’ve helped make me more secure in my choice of the LCP. Anything else you can add to this discussion would be most helpful. Thanks again!

GREAT VIDEO! Another point to be made is that the LC9s pro can fit extended 9 round magazines that cost about $35 each. Having 9+1 capability gives you more options depending on your method of carrying and concealing. 7+1 when wearing shorts, 9+1 when wearing jackets, etc. For the LC9s pro, +P ammo is fine, but manufacturer does not suggest shooting it too often, as prolonged use may wear out main spring. So target practice with std pressure ammo, and carry 124 grain JHP +P. Tritium night sights are relatively cheap for around $100 - $150. Unfortunately the tactical lights for the lc9s pro are extremely expensive, hard to install, and have a bad reputation for eating batteries. Still, this is probably one of the lightest, and best overall single-stack CC 9mm's available today.

Fantastic video. Thanks for the time and effort you put into producing it for us. I actually purchased an LCP II yesterday for the reason you touched on at the end. There was a gap in my personal security plan. I like to go for long walks in the middle of the night. I'm nocturnal because of my job, and the only time I have available for walks and exercise is the wee hours of the morning. It's not exactly comfortable to sprint in gym shorts with a Glock 19, so I needed something I could take with me that was light enough to clip onto the waistband of a pair of gym shorts. My wife has a S&W BodyGuard, and it worked perfectly, so I wanted to get one for myself in that same size range, and the LCP II seemed to have the most positive reviews. There are often coyotes in the location where I walk, and sometimes they gather in groups of 3 or more. I'm not concerned about just one or two coyotes, but if a group comes up, they might decide they can take one lone guy. I want to make sure I always have something with me to discourage them if they get brave.
I just did a first impressions video of the LCP II on my channel. I hope to go to the gun range tomorrow. If I can, I'll try to make another video featuring both my LCP II and my wife's BodyGuard. Maybe do some comparison.

Thanks for the comparison. Excellent video review/comparison. I have both guns, and depending on where I am headed will depend on which I carry. If going to a mall, etc., I carry the LCP II. If out on the trails, I normally carry the LC9, unless it is summer. On hot days when the rattle snakes are out I carry the Taurus Judge Poly with .410 PDX1 defender shot.

I would like to say that I really like and appreciate your videos. They seem to be more "real" than most of the reviews and shoot out comparison videos out there.
I am an old guy and really like revolvers. That is what most of my shooting experience has been with. I also live on the Texas Gulf Coast where it it summer nearly all the time. So concealing a handgun is always an issue as I live in jeans and t-shirts and I don't really like to stuff things in my pockets. I like shooting small handguns. I replaced my tried and true S&W 642 with an LCP some time back. I have never been totally comfortable with it as it tended to have FTF problems from time to time. I recently replaced the LCP with an LCP 2. I have put well over 300 rounds of various flavors through it in the last few weeks and it has been flawless. The operation is much better than the original LCP. I think I have finally found an easy to carry, reliable semi auto to replace my 642.
Keep up the good work with the videos!!

Good comparison video. Your grocer/butcher must love you for all the "target material" you buy for these videos. I have an LCP , and made it a point to get the extended magazines for it. It is not that much "taller" than with a six round magazine, and gives me that extra seventh shot, just in case. My spare mags (2) are also an extended mags I will check out the sights on the new LCP2, and see if I should trade in the old one, or keep it and just add to my collection. Thanks Paul.

More 380 ammo great data points from the man , Paul Harrell. I have debated the size of 380 carry guns so many times in my mind I cant even imagine the number of times. I have decided to go the larger Sub compact size. The larger "Sub-Compact" 380s are easier to shoot accurately, holds 15+1 in most cases and gets better FPS out of the longer barrel. The only downside is concealment is holster only. No pocket carry

Some years ago when I first bought my Ruger LCP, the first 6-round mag I ran through it I placed all 6 shots into a 3/4" group at 7 yards using ball ammo. This was while standing, slow fire and with no supports of any kind. Granted this was not under the stress of being fired upon etc. But I do feel this weapon is more than accurate enough for its intended purpose.

Ammo selection is critical with .380. I carried Fiocchi Extrema with XTP bullet until I saw videos of the Underwood Extreme Defense. I tried 40 rounds of the Underwood [it's not cheap] and was surprised at the accuracy and low recoil. Now it's all I carry in my .380
    Bodyguard.

I Purchased a Ruger LCP custom when I decided I wanted a pocket gun. It turns out that was an excellent choice, because I consistently carry it more often than I did when I had just my Glock 19. I have to dress around the Glock, whereas I can carry the ruger no matter what I wear. Thanks for using that Sig ammo in the testing, because that’s what I use for carry ammo. 👍🏻👍🏻

Another good video Mr. Harrell. I would like to add that the time of year and location could play a role in ammo selection. During the cold months of the northern US multiple layers of clothing might present a bullet with a formidable task where penetration might be more important where a hollow point might clog and not expand at all.

    • @simonsundy518
      @simonsundy518 6 лет назад

SuperSaltydog77 If that is the case you should still carry the same ammo...if you need the penetration, and your hollow point clogs up, you will get that penetration by virtue of the bullet behaving as an fmj...if the hollow point does expand it is still likely to penetrate adequately considering that the vast majority of hollow points, even after expanding perfectly, still penetrate through 100% of the target (except smaller calibers like .25 acp .22 lr .32 acp occasionally 380)

Hi Paul. Thanks for the thoughtful presentation. I have an LCP II for six months now and have two comments. Most of these comparisons on RUclips are slow fire at unrealistic distances one might encounter in a real world situation. I would suggest emptying the gun in under two seconds of fire once you started firing, at no more than 15 feet, from either a pocket draw or holster draw. Which gun was able to empty in that shooting time? How did they stay on target with that rapid fire?
Other comment relates to upgrades I have made to my LCP II, which have truly improved its shooting. First, add a Hogue grip intended for the LCP II. Greatly improves your grip on a short 1+ finger grip handle. Next, add a HYVE+2 magazine extension. That extends the length of your grip to a 2+ finger grip + gives you 2 more rounds in the magazine. Lastly, I added a second, yet cut down, Hogue grip on to the HYVE +2 extension. This gives me a 9 mm sized 3 finger grip frame size. More control and a faster grip on the gun when drawing.
Lastly, look into the Underwood Lehigh Xtreme Defense .380 ammunition. Very different bullet design. No expansion of the bullet. 2" wound channel in ballistic gel from entry to @ 18-24" going through multi-layer denim, wood, sheetmetal, or sheetrock. Meets or exceeds FBI standards. Good rib tests too. Muzzle velocity 1200'/65grain. Much more effective than traditional hollow points.
Remember, .380 is 9mm in diameter. There is very little difference between the length of a .380 and 9mm shell casing. That doesn't allow for a lot of difference in gun powder volume, only type of powders used and the bullet used.
    Thanks again.

Thanks for the video.. I own an lc9s pro which I love super accurate super reliable.. first time at the range I put 400 rounds through it out of the box not one stoppage or jam... I don't own an LCP too but I do own a Taurus TCP 380.. the difference is I only carry the Ruger lc9s pro once in awhile.. always on a belt holster.. but I carry the Taurus TCP 380.. 95% of the time it's on me.. I carry it in my right front pocket in a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster.. if I sent something suspicious or dangerous I can have my hand in my pocket on the grip of the TCP 380. (Finger OFF the trigger) and I can draw out of my pocket much faster than a belt holster or iwb! ..
