@@chrisbrockhurst does this trick work with the ZV E1? I plan to compensate the 1.5 crop of the dynamic stabe. Thanks for giving me your insight on this.
Hey Chris, thanks for all your helpful videos! I just have 2 quick questions for you. If I use an APSC lens on the Sony a7iv in Super 35 APSC crop mode does that mean that there is no crop on the lens? Does it look exactly the way it would on a Sony a6000 for example? Also, if I add the active stabilization, is there an additional crop? Thanks :)
There will always be crop with apsc lens on full frame but a7iv has higher megapixel so cropped pix isn't bad.
It will look exactly the way it does on your a6000 when the A74 is in crop mode. So you will not lose any of the lens capabilities. The active stabilization will add a little bit of extra crop though..
As the others said, it's without crop then. BUT in crop mode you only have 14.67 MP left of the A7IV's 33MP. That's not really a great option for me, especially not for photos. On a A7R_ with 61 MP that's a different story. Then you have 27MP left even in crop mode.
I know you said people would point that out in the comments but I am just marveling at how clean that house is...
Day after the cleaner came 😅
Been trying to decide on lenses for the A7IV to potentially buy for our content creation business but without losing what we need with wide shots for wide videos we create, and needing slow motion. Fantastic video and great examples. Cheers, Chris!
Love your videos. So inspiring and helpful. Thanks Chris!
It's exactly what I was looking for, thank you!
Thank you so much. Ive been looking for a solution and this answers all my question! Fantastic!
Like your new comedic editing! Keep it up!
Transitions and cuts in the beginning, mixed with your personality/delivery were absolutely on point. Nice job Chris.
Thankyou!
This was great! Thanks for the fun and informative video.
Very useful thank you!
Dude that’s gold! Definitely love that lense!
I was trying to buy this lens when I started making videos for real estate. It's expensive to start with, especially since this is the only ultra wide Sony apsc lens, I still use Sony a6400 now, but after seeing this video and Matti's video, I feel grateful to buy this lens, because I can still use it in the future when I upgrade to a Sony full frame camera.
Thanks for the test! Chris
Super tempted by it now! Great review 👌🏻
Thanks for making my 2012 lens at $600 in 2015 more valuable!! Things to know, 16mm is the best for architecture, The lens in APS-C is 15-17mm. In Full Frame 12-18mm (18mm if you remove the light shield) but also very narrow 12mm selection. It is also a OSS/IS lens married with a camera with IBIS the perfect walkabout lens. It also has threads for filters but a warning of polarizer use at 12mm you will get dark in the middle with bright sides remember the 90 degree rule. In '15 there were no 12mm's per say. This lens shines in landscapes and LR and most post processors have a lens correction. Also for astro Milky Ways to get that wide way path pano look or the vertical up high look in portrait view. On a Sony, no matter the MP size, you will hardly ever go above ISO 6400 most at 3200 at f/4 and will have daytime bright with stars in the sky, pinpoint if at 20s but 10 is best even at 3200. I have kept this lens in my small walkabout bag for years now for it is small where the 12-24 is bigger. A review by Trey Ratcliff in 2013 ruclips.net/video/Ysu-WIs-R1k/видео.html.
The Laowa 9mm f/2 on my Sony a6400 has been a banger of a lens for my real estate photography. I use the a7iii w/ Laowa 15mm for the low light video work. Don't sleep on the budget friendly Laowas. Great video Chris!
Love the size of this lens as well. Havent used one of these before, but going to add this to the ever expanding list of lenses to try out!
Nice Chris. Love your video quality lately. I like that you mixed in the editing Chris with live Chris.
Thanks just ordered this exact set up!
Very nice video Chris :D Have a productive week 💛💛💛
Clever, relevant, useful. Thank you !
Having 4K S35 mode again has been so nice. There are lots of APS-C lenses that work well in this mode. Haven’t tried the 10-18, but have brought out the legendary Sigma 18-35/1.8.
Great review. Thanks.
Thank you for not being annoying and giving fact after fact review content.
Here is another option that I use alot!
sony 16mm f2.8 + fisheye converter. (it can be used on full frame mode, just remove the rear baffle)
thank you so much for this video i actually have a7IV and looking for the wide lens to shoot basketball low top down perspective
Kyle and I have been talking about this lens. Its very interesting and you can't find anything wider especially with OSS in the lens. Great video!
Chris, thanks for this really great tip and I appreciated the examples you included. RE, your a7IV settings download... do the video settings include Vlogging settings or only real estate filming settings? Thanks,
I use this lens on an a6400 for RE. Glad to know I can upgrade to full frame without buying a new lens.
Thanks for the information Chris 👍👍
This was so helpful. I just sold my a6400 that I used for real estate and I was in panic mode because all I had was full frame cameras left with only my 10-18. This video just saved me from making a bad decision.
Bought my 10-18 last week after watching this and shot my 1st vid today.. excellent results on my A7iv..
Great work, I like it!
I’m tempted to get into real-estate photography with my new a7iv, do you have any videos about getting started in the business?
As a 10-18 owner, I am keeping this lens because of this review.
Although I don't have any full frame body yet.
Big idea ! Thanks !
Hey Chris
Thank you for the informative video. I would like know your review about samyang 18 mm 2.8 or this lense in video you made to buy. I am gonna use it on sony a7siii. My budget is tight for now. I am concern about distortion only.
It was a nice surprise for me too when I went from the a6000 to the a7c! I shoot at 10mm with stab off and use catalyst browse's stabilization at 85-90%. Vignette is cropped and it's even more stable footage than IBIS. You can still get the 12mm fov this way but rez is just under 4k - cool if you down sample to 1080p.
wow, so Catalyst is outperforming IBIS? that's basically making a full-frame camera a gopro!
Does the OSS works in conjunction with Catalyst stab? I know it doesnt work together with IBIS and you need to shut it off.
Trying to decide on how to build and invest into my kit. Currently shooting on an a6400 with sigma 30mm f/1.4 & samyang 12mm f/2.0. Planning on going to full frame soon either a7riv or a7iii or a7 iv which ever I can afford. But looking at lens, I'm stuck between investing in apsc lens or full frame. Looking at 11-20 f2.8 for a6400 as my wide body, and 24-70 for full frame.
Between having two body apsc and dull frame what would you recommend between having a fast wide lens for low light shots, and mid zoom range lens?
I also just picked up a lens for Real Estate but I went with Laowa 9mm 0distortion.
It’s sharper, it’s wider (between 9 and 10 is quite a difference) it’s also brighter because it’s f2.8 and also it’s like 30% cheaper. I love it so far, would recommend you to have a look at it because you missed it while you compared the other lenses.
Been using that lens primarily for real estate on my A6500 for a couple years. It does a great job and has no distortion. A7iv arrives Monday. Can’t wait!
@@fourcornersdigitalimagery8806 Does real estate photography pay well?
As I said under the Matti's video - ditch the hood, remove the rear hood (3 screws) and you will have a 10-18 that covers the sensor from 12 to 18 even for stills :). I use the 10-18 OSS for years for eal estate :). It is awesome! There is even a custom lens profile to fix the distortion for stills.
PS it has a hidden macro function :D you just have to set the aperture and then unmount the lens by 1-2mm just so it can lose contact with the camera and it parks the focus in a way that you can focus really close to the lens.
What about the photography with this lens on the A7IV. Wouldn’t this be useless because of reduced megapixel (APSC on a full frame)?
@@KuldeepGhadiali That is the point it covers full frame from 12 to 18mm :). It is not the sharpest, you have to use custom lens profile to fix the distortion but for me it is worth it because of the size, weight and price. It is more versatile...
Why not the Tamron 11-20 2.8?
Used this on an A7III as a wide angle landscape/street lens for travel as I already had it and it is small- i the sweet spot is in the 12 to 14 /16 ( equivalent 18-21/24 FF) range . Fun to use but i subsequently added the Tamron 17-28 f2.8 to serve my wide angle needs. Changing it up, Chris!
10-18mm is the FF focal length, on a 1.5x crop sensor then it becomes the 18-21/24mm etc
@@danmetcalf3190 that's what I thought! I wish the review outlined more the effetive focal length when shot in FF mode in 4K 60fp...instead of it being just "wider" how about mentioning the effective focal length the same way it was outlined for the 16-35mm...
Been using this lens on my Sony full frame forever, great bit of kit.
Hi brother
Thank you thank you so much for this video
I want to start real estate videography with sony A74 and does 10-18mm serve all the need for real estate videography? Can we shoot 1080p also r it can be used for 4k60p crop only??
You call this completely unscientific but it’s exactly what I do in my office all the time late at night! Thanks so much.
can you make more videos about real estate photography, such as which gear you use and some tips for beginner and so one please please
What about the sony a7m4 camera can use? Can we get still photos sharp picture and what about distrosation
I love how you're not afraid to keep the mic in the shot right next to your mouth for the best audio quality. Most RUclipsrs advise against that and I don't know why. It sounds so crispy
I like the audio sounding good, what can I say 😅
Please if you can find the time would you consider making a video on the Tamron 11-20?
Good example of the Sony advantage of one mount across all camera bodies. Any lens will work on APS-C, FF and Cinema bodies.
hello, you who have had the samyang 14mm 2.8, what cheap angle would you buy to make real estate videos on the sony a7iv?
the sony 10-18 F4 or the samyang 14mm F2.8?
In the comments many say that the tamron 11-20 gives excellent results, could you please do tests
Saludos desde Chile
Chris remember about Voigtlander Heliar-Hyper Wide 10mm f/5.6 Aspherical is another option for you.
Thanks man
thank u chris, i was looking for a budget easy lens to shoot RE with! this might actually be the one 😄 12mm full frame at this price is crazy
Great video! That lens looks really good.
Is there any difference in bokeh when you use an apsc lens on an an apsc camera and a full frame camera like A74 in apsc mode/ 4k 60fps? Does the full frame give you more bokeh?
Love the " Brockhurst EST 2015 " on the stairs LOL
When you shoot real estate video, what f stop & focus mode you recommend to use ?
yeah, i was considering buying one of this.
Do you make the crop on camera or in post? Thanks dude
As I said in Matti’s video, I hope they make a mk2 version. Almost $1k for a super old lens? I have this lens for real estate, and I’m not super excited about the sharpness. It does the job tho.
vs tamron 11-20 PLIS
i have something similar, but i use the sigma 16mm with a converter at 0.43 = 10mm
Thanks as always, Chris! I actually use the similar APSC Tamron 11-20 f2.8 in full frame mode on my a7IV. Around 12-13mm, it's quite usable in full frame mode, and it's super wide and 2.8. It's just not OSS, but that's not a big deal when you're that wide. I actually chose the APSC version instead of the full frame Tamron 17-28 so I could use it with 4k60 on the a7IV. So basically, I can do 4k60 or 4k24/30 in APSC mode with a full frame equivalent of 16.5-30, and I can do 12-13mm full frame in 4k24/30. It's the best of both worlds!
I was just about to recommend that haha. 11-20 is killer for sure!
Yes, and for stills I love the tamron. Good call. I'd rather go with the Tammy.
@@Princeton_James yeah only downside with going apsc lens with the a74 is it drops the 33Megapixel camera to 15. Still actually not bad to be honest
How does Tamron 11-20 work with a7IV Active Mode stabilization?I heard that Active Mode stabilization with non-Sony lens do not work well.
I watched a RUclips video comparing a7IV Active Mode stabilization using Sony and non-Sony lens.
ruclips.net/video/0KEgSEHImlE/видео.html
@@eugenewangchuck8633 honestly not all that sure. But I know the stabilization is pretty great on the 17-28mm so idk why it would be similar in the 11-20. Plan to get the 11-20 soon so I’ll round back
Hey, I recognize that liftlock! Hi from another PTBO photog :) Nice review on this wide angle option for Sony.
Chris, what gimbal are you using with your a7iv?
This might be the best wide lens to use on a Sony a7iv on 4k 60fps. Thanks for sharing!
Check out the Laowa 9mm. Great lens, affordable and zero distortion.
Wondering how the brand new Sigma 10-18 APS-C lens performs on full frame. It's a pity by the way that there is no really compact F4 ultra wide angle lens for full-frame existing, so that we have to trick around with APS-C lenses. I have the Samyang 18mm f2.8, it's good and very compact, but it's only 18mm. If I want something around 14-16mm, there's no really compact option available.
his which is best for Sony 10 18 or 11mm 1.8
Which light is that in the back you use at 0:53
Yooo nice one Chris! can you do this again for the newer 10-20mm? Been thinking about getting it for my a74 and stay in crop mode for the rest of my life haha :) nice one!
Does anyone know what gimbal he was using?
Thank you!
Did you take any real estate photos with this setup, not too distorted at 12-14 range?
Couldn´t focus on anything else but the fly. Have to watch it again 😯😀
Porfavor analiza lo mismo con el Tamron 11-20 2.8 apsc para usarlo en bienes raíces
Would you do any photography with it? Not thrilled about cropping in and getting lower MP but it’s still 14 or 15 right? But it obviously makes sense for video
14 is still a ton to be honest, probably only use it for video though
what about the Sony 11mm 2.8?
What about Sony 11mm f1.8?
Definitely useful.
One of the big things with this lens unlike a lot of ultra wides is that you can screw in an ND filter, it's why I've been hesitant to change to the Sony 14mm GM, shooting log outside with that lens you need ND. I am aware the 14mm has back ND's but it's not as convenient
@@RelaxingWalks maybe watch the video.....this is the Sony 10-18mm F4 APSC lens but it works very well on FULL FRAME cameras too is what chris is saying and I'm implying that the ultra wides I've looked for full frame don't take ND filters and is an advantage which wasn't mentioned.. Yes there's other APSC ultra wides which have nd filter options. Which tamron and samyang?
@@RelaxingWalks I'm fully aware that the a7IV shoots cropped 4K60, but if you look at 2.26 in the video chris is describing the camera in full frame mode using this lens, which is my point there are few 12mm-14mm lenses which are 1. That wide and 2. Have the ability to screw in filters. Name another FF Wide lens around the 12-14mm mark where you can screw in filter since you own all the lenses.
the verticals looked quite straight too on the edges... temping... i have a 17-28 Tamron and the verticals warp on the edges so bad its annoying.
It's an extremely soft lens on APS-C and only gets worse when using it on full frame bodies. Useful for the stabilization and it made sense for a while, but there are better offerings out there now. As others have already said the Tamron 10-20 is a much better option.
I had it before and sold it. Such a poor performing lens. Chromatic aberration, distortion, not sharp. Not worthy of the price tag
@@qtben17 The Sony? If so, I wholeheartedly agree 👍🏻
So in a nutshell, you've answered our question about the A7IV and what we've been holding off on for SOOO long. You can still achieve 4K 60, you just need a wider lens, and IT WORKS. WELL!
We're still curious though, how does this lens look for wide photographs?
Thanks!
but if we compare it with 4K30 without crop on a true fullframe equivalent focal length lens, e.g a 15mm FF lens, are we losing sharpness? resolution?
This is Gold. Zipper open is part of the lens review aesthetic 😂
Hello,
Any partucular reason you have chosen a full frame lens in 16-35 on a full frame body and cropped it? What am I missing? 10-18 is roughly 15-27 on a full frame.
In 4k it crops 1.5x so I’m countering that crop with a wider lens
So on my A7III in crop mode that would be 15 - 27mm. That's pretty good. 👍
youre my hero
You’re mine
Chris are you going to do any film work when and if you visit the UK
already been! sorry fella
The 12-24/4 would have been a better lens to compare against
Had to leave a comment just because of the peterborough lift lock!
yehhhh!!
I think the tamron 2.8 is better than an f4 in most case uses 🤔
Cool trick!
I just found this lens on FB Marketplace for $250! I didn't know what I would use it for I just got it for the steal. Now I know a use case. Thanks mate
