    Excellent video ! All the items necessary are explained with descriptive details and how/where to get them. I just ordered a 4' X 50' roll of 1/2" X 1/2" 16 gauge directly from Fencer Wire website....$156.73 delivered to my door as of this posting, with their 10% off code. Can be ordered for free pick up or delivery from Home Depot for about $25 more. Got the cage rings and tool at my local feed store for $20. I'm in east bay area of San Francisco (Pittsburg) and will be heading to coast this weekend to get some fat dungeness. Thanks again for the fantastic detailed video. Happy crabbing !

    As someone whonbuilt lots of rabbit cages, if you can get the J clips and pliers, it will be neater, stronger and faster to put together. It's also very cheap inbred US.
    If you just want to make a few cages for now and you have no tools, just use the original method by usingbthe wire ends to secure the ends of your cage. You will get lots of use out if it but it may fail sooner. Cause of the bend in the wire. It tends to weaken at the bend and break or rust at that point. However, you can still catch crabs until it fails.
    Numbers to get fancy or buy expensive store bought snares. If you can't or don't want to make them yourselves, just look online and there are many local or RUclipsrs making and selling them for a good price. Please support them instead of the bug stores unless you don't have a choice at the moment.
    By the way, other than the vinyl coated hot dipped galvanized wire, the best option is to buy Marine mesh, with comes coated it plain. As the name says, it's made for Marine use and dies not rust.
    So if you want to make a few or a hundred of these snares for your personal use, you can buy how much mesh you need and yes it comes in half inch square as well, to make bait cages that will last you the rest if your life time.
    Unless you use cheap leader and line and lose them... Lol

    When I was looking at your snares I noticed the coated wire and the 1/2 in squares. I like them a lot. I have my lead molds but want to see what your's look like. Do we do it the same?? I like one of your snares a lot so I want to see how you mount your lines. Because of the Rona we haven't been out in a long, very long time! I don't need to make any new snares this year. Maybe they will be opening the parking lots and piers soon??
    Any idea when you will be posting the other videos in the series?

    • @TheJoyofLiving
      @TheJoyofLiving  4 года назад +2

      Hey Gene. They opened up the parking lots to the beaches roughly a little over a month ago in the Bay Area. They opened up the pier the last 2 weeks of the season. Crabbing on the pier was horrible. Mostly small crabs, females, and rock crabs. Not many KEEPERS! I had a lot better luck at Baker's Beach.

    Very informative video. I saw that you had a hard time bending the granola type cages. If you use the edge of a table or something similar it should help a lot.

    Great videos! What snare shape casts the farthest? I read you like the brownie shape the best. Is that the best off the pier?

    • @TheJoyofLiving
      @TheJoyofLiving  3 года назад +2

      The Twinkie can cast a little further. I just like the brownie better. Either shape works well at the pier. Appreciate the support. CRAB ON!

      Hey brother. Hope things are going well during this pandemic. My favorite snare is the brownie cage and dragon fly loops. The loops stand up and points out.

    I would like to buy two 9” x 12” pieces of your 16 gauge steel mesh. You could send in a USPS bubble envelope. How much would you charge me? In fact, have you considered turning your hobby into a business? You could sell the components for crab snares in individual kits. If so, I want components for six snares if your price is reasonable. Let me know if you are interested. Robert A.
