I'm searching for a high gain pedal to use with my Deluxe Reverb Reissue. My main gigging amp is a Mesa/Boogie Electra Dyne, but I'm putting a pedalboard together for my lighter, quieter amp. It's also a single-channel, clean amp of course so my drive pedal needs are quite different. I play in cover bands.
I have Friedman BE-OD. My favorite hi gain pedal. And also have Revv G3 that I am not so happy with. I wonder how Walrus Eras can be compared with those two pedals?
I have the Friedman BE-OD, love it. Whats wrong with the G3? Good to know. I bought the Revv "Northern Mauler". Still searching for a useful sound, maybe it doesnt go eith my amp. And a bunch of people are worshipping the chainsaw tone of early death metal these days, I had not realized thst the pedal was so much devoted toward that particular sound. My bad.
@@saltpeter7429 G3 lack of presence and this Marshall type of fizziness I like. And always sound aggressive and too much mid focused. I always had to scoop it mids at 1.5MHz with external EQ. I also bought Walrus Eras too and not happy with it too. It has very good present and tasty mids in 2nd mode but overall this pedal sounds very loosie.
Thanks Kris, a really good demo 😊 I think the blend knob in this and the Walrus Ages overdrive are key selling points for their drive pedals, it gives them something different to the vast majority 👍
Great pedal and great review! Kris, there are just 2 things that I would have liked to watch and listen in this video: 1. About the blend knob, if you can use it to lessen the gain (I don't know... maybe for playing rocky heavy blues, sometimes, instead of metal). And, why would someone use the blend knob all the way down? Wouldn't be better to just turn it off or it still make any difference? 2. You said something about using a mid-hump OD before the Eras, but there was no sample of that 😪. Could you do a short video, maybe using the Ages OD and the Eras together, please? Thanks for everything man, I really like all your videos. They are always so well done!!
1. You'd use the blend to 0 if you want to smooth the effect by fading into the desired blend. Instead of instant blend to 50%, you'd go from 0 to 50 at desired speed. Of course, it would be pointless to use blend 0 instead of bypass if you don't plan doing that.
I appreciate you making these demo videos..I never used pedals I've played for years just through amps I had 1 mild O.D. pedal to put it over the edge but I'm getting into them a lot now. 2thumbs up great video..
James, that’s awesome to hear! Pedals are a lot of fun. If you find 2-3 awesome drive pedals that really work well, there’s almost no way back to amp distortion. 😅 At least that’s how it was for me.
Thanks bud! As a bassist, I hope you noticed the bass in the intro jam (the Eras was on 25% blend) and the bass playing later in the video. 💪 I only did that for you. 😅
Dang. I watched 2 and a half demos of this pedal, usually enough for me to know whether it's for me or not, and i had concluded: Not. Then you. You made it sound pretty fantastic. Sounds like a great amp, but one that i don't recognize. Which is quite a feat. // I have no room on my board for anything else. So, i guess i'm about to become a 'collector.' Dang. // Oh, yeah-wow: what a great demo. You're the tops!
Thanks so much! 🙌 Yeah it can be tricky finding the right demo for you. Everyone sounds/plays differently and even more importantly in this case: everyone records the demo differently. I always use the same amp and OX/Captor X setting for all of my videos to get the exact same tone s as what I get with my cab. This might make it easier for the viewer to evaluate the sounds in one specific video of mine. And of course nothing beats the experience of playing that piece of gear yourself. 😉 These videos are just appetizers. Haha
Heh heh! Wow I like that pedal it seems to be a nice controlled AF chaos. I agree it is mean AF but it matches your mean AF playing!! oh and very informative AF vid! Thank!
Haha, this has a good reason. This solo piece was like 3rd-4th take. In the Thomann videos you mostly see first takes, so I don’t even try to play too challenging licks. Otherwise my playing wouldn’t be any clean in those videos. 😅
@@KrisBarocsi hahaa, this reminds me of Marty Friedman. He was asked, which of his Megadeath solo is most challengim for him. He responded "None of them, how could I play them live, if they are challenging?" ...
Wait, are you saying all the gain in the intro song is only that pedal?? How is that even possible? If that's really the case, that thing sounds amazing, and I don't even use high gain sounds because they usually sound like crap. It's funny that you said it sounds like it's "already produced", because I was going to say, this pedal sounds like a fully-produced heavy guitar tone. There's virtually no hint of fizziness. I generally do not like distortion pedals (although I will also say that the one distortion pedal I do like is the Walrus Audio Iron Horse V2), and I didn't find the Ages compelling, though it is of course an excellent overdrive (just not any better than what I already have). The Eras is actually making me rethink the entire category of distortion pedals, and is one of those rare products that makes me think it might change my whole approach to guitar. And to be perfectly honest, I have a thing about having sets and matching, so the Eras actually would make me buy an Ages to go with it, where I wouldn't have bought an Ages beforehand, even though there is one setting on the Ages I really do love (I think it's the LED clipping mode). I think every mode on the Eras sounded great in this video, whereas with the Ages, when I heard it, it was only the one mode I thought sounded really great. Not there there was a bad sound in the Ages, I'm speaking solely of personal taste, here. Does Walrus Audio even make a "bad" sounding pedal? I can't think of one.
Yeah, right? I mainly use overdrives and stack them for more gain instead of using one distortion pedal. This thing has quite some gain and zero fizziness. The intro song was only the Eras into my clean Revv (american voiced but without the Blackface mid-scoop, s had in the video here and there).
😂 Of course. I mean it’s clearly a product presentation. Good thing is, that I get to show you awesome new gear (I only make videos on stuff that I personally find good and give you my honest opinion at the end) and the viewer gets to hear new gear in good quality. That can avoid buying the „wrong“ stuff, which is pretty nice. At least that’s how I see it. And of course rule Nr.1 is, that the content creator has to make it clear that it’s a product promotion. 👍 cheers!
The truth is, no one really cares if it's a paid product placement. What we care about is whether or not the product is represented accurately. A real musician judges by ears alone. Kris makes excellent quality demos and that takes expensive equipment and a lot of expertise. I'm happy if Walrus Audio pays him to demonstrate their products; musicians deserve to make a living, too.
@@gcvrsa ohh Gamma, you have no idea how much I respect and appreciate your words. I can tell you’re an experienced musician and I‘m really glad you find my videos somewhat entertaining and useful. Cheers! 🤟
Yea I'm pretty sure Walrus is a for-profit company. Those guys have families and stuff too, they gotta earn. There's nothing deceptive about paid product presentations like this. The point of products is to make money. Musicians and artists tend to be uniquely incapable of grasping this simple concept.
Honestly I want to see someone show what they can get out of it. For some reason Kris always does a good job across the board. Can’t be quick or easy to make these things everyone deserves to be paid for their work if it’s good right.

Brian Wampler made great video on mixing cleans into heavy OD/Distortion.
Sounds pretty good in this video. Can this thing hold it's own against a Friedman BE-OD Deluxe?

I don't have a modern High gain pedal yet but this one has some nice options.

Can someone explain what the various clippings mean? I’m a bit of a newbie on this kind of stuff.
Killer pedal!! And great review!!! Kris you always have great tone!!!
So glad to hear that Charles, thank you! I guess being really picky about guitar tones does have some benefits sometimes. 😅
Walrus should have added midi to change between modes or another switch
