I like use pedals instead of the amp drive for distortion because I can stack them for different tones and saturation levels, and I have more control over the distortion tone. Great and useful video, thanks a lot ! :D My first step into the world of stacking drive pedals was a Visual Sound Double Trouble, which is basically 2 Tubescreamers in a single box (blew my mind at the time, such a thick sound !), which i quickly began to use to boost a Wampler Triple Wreck, offering me the metal tone i was searching for a long time. As of now, my favorite is probably the Boss Waza Blues Driver into the Boss Waza Metal Zone into Gain 1 of the Victory VX Kraken, all 3 with fairly few gain, but the result is way more than the sum of the 3. Cheers and keep on the great content, watching you talk gear is always a pleasant moment ! :)
I use the Bogner Ecstasy Blue and Red pedals for my main low and high gain sounds and sometimes boost them with a tubescreamer. Especially the Ecstasy Blue gets some really nice extra sustain and gives you that lovely "Lukather single soil"-sound!
Sebastian Laue The Ecstasy pedals are killer!! Good choice! I also love my ecstasy red. Insane when used as preamp too, not only as a distortion pedal. Cheers buddy! :)
Great video, the only thing I disagree with is that the super phat can not be used to boost the revv2, the super phatt is also quiet versatile and can be setup like a blues breaker to boost what comes after it in the chain . Great vid, thank you
Your videos are so well done and so useful! You deserve a lot of attention Kris. I thought I had a lot of concepts acquired but I’m always learning something new and understanding issues I’m Having with tone. Cheers from Argentina
Wow thanks i really enjoyed that video, My favorite stacks are the Maxon OD-808 in front of the Horizon Precision Drive that is tight!! Also The Boss SD-1 in front of the Proco Rat!! The SD-1 the most versatile overdrive on my board it sound good on any setup, An interesting thing i do is mixing different levels of different drive pedals in parallel with the boss LS-2 ! What i really want to try now is the JHS Double Barrel wich is basically the Moonshine and the Morning Glory in one box. Those are based on respectively a TS808 and a Marshall Blues Breaker 😅
Great episode, man. Good script and focus and nice choice of gear. Keep it up. And kudos for using the foxcatcher. I just learned about it on JHS's show and was impressed. If you're inclined to talk about it more, maybe even demo it using different amps/guitars, I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd be interested... Cheers, man
Ricardo Lima Pereira thank you Ricardo! :) The Foxcatcher is the prettiest and “cleanest” sounding low gain overdrive I’ve ever came across. I’m in love with it for years now. You’ll be hearing it on this channel for sure.
Hi and a big hello all the way from Malaysia, Kris. Great video, love the tones u r getting from all the pedals. Just wanna share the way I stack my drive pedals. I have a Sinvertek N5 that I use for solos, volume set high but gain set quite low so it's overdriven but on the verge of distortion. I have a Mooer Cruncher with the volume set just above unity, gain set quite high. I use this for power chords /fills and also to boost the Sinvertek N5, getting more gain plus volume. These 2 pedals are all I need to go from squeaky clean(bypass everything) to saturated distortion. 😁😁
This is so good! I was thinking of it the opposite way. But just recently I discovered that, for example fuzzes sound best first in the chain, then I shape the tone with my Revival Drive.
I´m using a Koch Twintone MkII on the clean setting. The my always on Pedal is the Lightspeed from Greer Amps. After that I have the Okko Diablo plus and the Mad Professor Supreme or my King of Tone - depending on what I´m going for:-) It works very good for what I´m doing.
Hey Kris! Awesome video I learned a lot about stacking I currently have a: 1. Greer Lightspeed 2. EHX Crayon 3. EQD Plumes 4. Source Audio L.A. Lady for different heavy gains and fuzzes. What do you think about this?
Thanks man! Yes I was running the OX. What you hear is the pedals, REVV head clean channel, OX cab simulation straight into the Audient iD44 audio interface.
Man, like 90% of guitarists, i look at suhrs and prs and andersons as dream guitars....but since the day i have this harley benton...i haven't been able to get it out of my head!! Great playing and content as always....
Hey Kris, Awesome video. I was running a Wampler Pantheon into my Tumnus Deluxe into a Fender DRRI. After watching your video I think I'll switch them around and see what happens. P.S. I just referred a friend to your RUclips channel. Thanks
yeh man been messing around with mad professor sweet honey low into keely red dirt and phat mod and pro autio mantacore med. gain can go from sweet home alabama to panama. sounds really good playing thru fen. hot rod deville
Awesome video, Kris! Just started stacking overdrives recently. Would you stack a Tube Screamer TSMINI before a Boss Blues Driver BD-2? My signal chain: Empress Buffer+ Boost -> TS MINI -> BD-2
Fantastic video, I'm not into time based effects or modulation too much. However I really love gain stacking. Problem is I run 3 amps simultaneously, Carvin X-50B with 4x12 cab, Marshall JCM800 4010 combo with a DV-77 speaker, and a Peavey stereo chorus 2x12. The gain stack for now is first to last, Ibanez Nu-tube screamer, MXR Zakk Wylde overdrive, Boss HM2, Boss SD1, MXR EVH 5150. Those are run through the loop section of the Revv G8 gate. On a Earthquaker Swissthings pedal to Split to 2 amps. Now I have a MXR stereo chorus on the second loop of the Swissthings, so off the mono out on the MXR Chorus I run the Peavey amp off that. Not the most ideal way to run it, but until I find a switching unit that I can afford this is how it is lol. Any input on this signal chain would be greatly appreciated. Can't believe I missed this video, I love your content, Cheers!
I have a Mooer Cruncher (CrunchBox type pedal) with a mid/almost high gain setting and use my TS808 clone to boost the volume and tight the sound a bit for my lead tone. I do that when I'm using a clean amp, but when I use the drive from the amp, I use it in a low gain setting to be able to clean it up nicely with my volume knob on my guitar, then I use the Mooer in also a low gain setting to get a more distorted sound, but I don't like how it responds, I can't use the TS because I use it for solos, which pedal should I buy? I'm thinking in a Boss BD-2 or a Klon type pedal
I love the content..I really hope you can help. I'm new to the tone chasing, I've spent my career with a 50 watt marshall tube head and very few pedals and was perfectly content. But now I'm older and want a bluesier tone so I dove into the pedal platform arena. I love that Hendrix/Texas tone, but I'm not an SRV clone. So with much research I got a victory duchess V40 ,a cheap clone and a tube screamer. My guitars I'm using a core John Mayer silver sky and a 96 USA lonestar strat. Contrary to what you advise I use my clone as my rithym crunch then into my TS for lead boosting. I seem to be on the right track but rolling off volume to clean up my clone crunch is just not happening, It just sounds like crap,I find myself doing the tap dance trying to stomp all these pedals for dynamics. Is it because my clone sux? It's a 40 $ wish clone but it's sounds great.I've thought about upgrading to a J Rockett ,a centavo, or a tumnus , but I didn't know if my pedal order is screwing me up or if it's my choice in clones? I've even considered a prince of tone to replace my cheap clone, supposedly I can roll off with the prince. But I've also heard great things about the Nobles ODR. I know alot of this is personal preference, but I need some direction. Please,my head is spinning, lend me your expertise, I would be forever greatful.
I just got my Revv G4 and I'm excited to start stacking it. I was curious what you thought about stacking a fuzz against it? Or stacking fuzz in general?
I just tried a klon ktr and Friedman dirty Shirley combo. Both of them going Into a jtm45. Interestingly I like the dirty Shirley first. I’m running it pretty dirty into a relatively clean ktr. It just seemed fatter that way.
I use a mxr distortion+ vol max gain min to push some fatness into my mt-2 or a keeley modded mt-2 on a low gain setting pushing my REVV G3 for a mid boost 🤘🏽
Kris Barocsi I run it into a 1 12 floor monitor pointed at my face,212 fender open back cab, 412 sealed sunn cab and into a medium sized pa all in a 4x5 meter room 🤗 it sounds massive. your welcome to pop by if’n your in the area 👍🏽
So, compressor to a chorus to a behringer phazor,to another phaser, to a orange burst to a ds1 distortion to a big muff nano to amp hot mess, love it though
Kris I stack a Fuchs plush drive in front of a Jhs Andy Timon's The plush makes it rounder and pushes mids the AT provides the grit and bottom end without fizz The other way round and it's mid hump mush all the way
Very nicely detailed. I have a old DigiTech multi-effects pedal so I kinda sudo this. I really liked the sounds you achieved. That Revv...... now give the elf his damn guitar back!
TeMpiSSeD Haha! So you’ve seen that picture? You stalker! 🤣 By the way, that was an other silver sparkle guitar (a Knaggs) so I hope I can keep my Fusion. I’ll talk to him.
(long post alert) At the moment I have 3 gain pedals at hand. TC Electronic MojoMojo, TS808 made in late 80ties (which is not mine and I have to return it soon) and EQD Bows. I use this in front of Marshall 15h (no FX loop). The problem with this amp is, that clean channel has very little break up and gain channel have too much breakup and gain. So I use the EQD bows kinda like my first pre-amp tube of my "crunch" channel. It has on its own kinda tuby and very nice breakup if pushed by other pedals. And my "fx loop" for delay, tremolo and reverb is between EQD and my amp. I run the MojoMojo first with as much gain as I like and then into TS808 with some gain and volume at noon. I found out, that when I push MojoMojo with something in front it has too much bass end and amp just "farts" because of it. But when I run it intu TS, the lowend is shelved and top end bit smoothed and it sounds perfect. So now I have clean sound (no drive pedals) onto that I can run MojoMojo for bit of breakup and TS808 for lead boost. Then I have my "crunch" channel when I engage the EQD bows, I can push it with the other pedal for more breakup and stauration. And I have my high gain sound (without reverb and delay) with my gain channel pushed with TS808. I have to get some good pedal in the place of 808, Im thinking about Keeley Red Dirt mini.
I'd suggest either a keeley modded TS or the EQD's plumes. I have a keeley modded TS and it blows me away. And bear in mind that I use it with the gain off! The JHS bonsai is another good option...
@@_RLP I cant get Keeley moded TS here, so I was thinking about Red Dirt as it should be TS with all Keeley mods available thru dip switches. JHS bonsai is waaay to expensive. EQD Plumes looks like good choice too and cost the same as Keeley Red Dirt.
@@stanislavmigra Not sure where you're at, but you can get pretty much anything on reverb... However, if you're set on the red, go for it. It's a fine choice. Cheers
@@_RLP chcecked The Plumes and it kinda starts growing on me. First, it has the switch outside (no need to unscrew and fiddle with tacky dip switches), second it has also asymetrical clipping option and last but not least ... it is EQD pedal and Im huuge EQD fan :D
Bought a BOR and wasn't able to use it as a high gain pedal like people use to see in many reviews of this pedal. But it works perfectly as a low gain overdrive to me (gain around 10 o'clock) and when I need more gain I put a BB Preamp in front of it. Do you find the boost section of the pedal adding a little sparkling characteristic to the sound or is it just me?
Hey Erick, I agree 100% about the BoR. Have you seen my newer video on it? That describes my experience with it and shows how I love using it. Spoiler: It’s not gonna surprise you a lot. Haha! You’ll find the video on my Gear Corner playlist. Cheers
Interesting video. What kind of drive the Boss BS2 is? What additional drive you would stack it with, and in which order? Beside that, I have also an Apocalypse fuzz that's first in the chain (does not work well in other positions) and I rarely stack it with the BD2. So, an other option would be to add a boost (fuzz > boost > BD2). Any recommendation?
paolo caputo The Blues Driver is an overdrive with quite some tele (EDIT: sorry, I mean treble) and low end. It also lacks some midrange. The order is great how you have them: the BD2 should be right at the end (last drive pedal) and most fuzz pedals work best at the front. You could try a clean boost between them or even a drive with more mids, just to have that option too. If you’re looking for a great clean boost with some tonal options check out the Xotic Super Clean and the Super Sweet (Watch my latest video for those) and if you want something midrangey, the Tube Screamer (and all the TS type pedals of other brands) will be good.
Hey Kris, really liking your own content! Just got a Dynamis myself, looking to get a pedal for those 80's DeMartini/Lynch/VH1 etc tones that I just can't seem to dial in on the amp (maybe I suck). Would you advise a SD Diamondhead, a REVV G3, or...? thx a bunch man.
@@stanislavmigra Man I have to thank you. Strangely I was unaware of that pedal, checked it out, and just got my Pinnacle Deluxe v2. To quote a YT star of bass... O-M-Gee... Epic!! (slap-a-like NOW etc lol). This pedal does everything I was searching for and then some, from early Priest to Queensryche to VH1 to hair metal and every tone I loved in the 80's, I am truly blown away, I can't remember the last time I was so inspired by a pedal... and through my Dynamis it sounds monstrous, my 1x12 has the punch of a full stack! The quest is over mouahaha mouahahah. Thx so much for the heads up dude. \m/
Awesome video. Any advice on how to listen drive pedal to see the difference between those which has the mid hump and those more flat? For me its not so easy unless it say tube screamer or similar. Thanks
Jose Abel that is a great question! I bet many people want to ask it but most are simply too afraid to ask it. You’ll get the answer in my 4th Comment Time - Q&A video. Cheers man!
Hi Kris, Can I get a metallic sound out of a Klon and KOT (STACKED)? I'm eyeing to get clones of these two. But afraid that I won't get the tone that I want lol
Do you mean a good metal tone? Well I love a klon into KoT for high gain but if you want a really mean metal tone put an eq pedal after them to shape the tone even more. Then you can get any heavy tone out of them.
Hey man, yes, the fusion still rocks the original pickups. I need some time to do some thinking, testing and research. First I also need to finish up my Squier bass. haha!
@@KrisBarocsi okay now that glittery baby is one step closer to my christmas tree 😄😋😂 But I'm still curious to see what pickups you'll put there cause I too love the bell like quality of a tele regardless and would love some of that in a HH config too 😝🔥🎸

Very informative video. Thank you. Subscribed and looking forward to watching all your other videos.
I thought I had a lot of concepts acquired but I’m always learning something new and understanding issues I’m
Having with tone. Cheers from Argentina
Thanks so much Julián! I’m so glad to hear that. 🥳
Wow thanks i really enjoyed that video,
My favorite stacks are the Maxon OD-808 in front of the Horizon Precision Drive that is tight!!
Also The Boss SD-1 in front of the Proco Rat!!
The SD-1 the most versatile overdrive on my board it sound good on any setup,
An interesting thing i do is mixing different levels of different drive pedals in parallel with the boss LS-2 !
What i really want to try now is the JHS Double Barrel wich is basically the Moonshine and the Morning Glory in one box. Those are based on respectively a TS808 and a Marshall Blues Breaker 😅
great advice. shows why it is good to always experiment with pedal order
just me thanks man! Yes, my own pedals keep on surprising me to this very day. Haha!
Great video! I stack my ts808 into the KOT and love it. Id also love to see a demo of your favourite gear and pedalboard? Thanks.
The Foxcatcher is the prettiest and “cleanest” sounding low gain overdrive I’ve ever came across. I’m in love with it for years now. You’ll be hearing it on this channel for sure.
Great info! Im stacking plumes to carlmartin plexitone to clean laney lionheart. Takes time to find the perfect combination.
vilukissa It certainly does take some time. That sounds like a really cool setup you got there.
Man love your videos! so full of enthusiasm!
Thanks a lot man! That enthusiasm is the only reason I make these videos. 😅 If something doesn’t excite me I just don’t film it.
This is so good! I was thinking of it the opposite way. But just recently I discovered that, for example fuzzes sound best first in the chain, then I shape the tone with my Revival Drive.
Perfect! The Revival Drive is super versatile so you have a lot of tonal options to shape the tone of the fuzz. Awesome choice! :) Cheers
9:53 this sounds gives me GAS for that Keeley pedal 🤩
Love the video - very informative and beautifully explained -Thanks !
Strini Chetty thank you Strini!! So cool to hear you like it.
Great video - cleared up a lot of things - thanks !
This was awesome!!!
Thanks a lot Charles! 🙌
I´m using a Koch Twintone MkII on the clean setting. The my always on Pedal is the Lightspeed from Greer Amps. After that I have the Okko Diablo plus and the Mad Professor Supreme or my King of Tone - depending on what I´m going for:-) It works very good for what I´m doing.
frank engelmann Okko is awesome!! Great rig Frank! Thanks for sharing
You know what is great to stack is fuzzes. Sometimes when you stack fuzz, you can get a more usable tone.
J Steen absolutely man!! You just unintentionally teased a future video on this channel. 🤣
@@KrisBarocsi ha ha, looking forward to it. 😁👍
@@KrisBarocsi sweet, I was missing fuzzes and boost in this vid 😉
My gain pedals are 1. Greer Lightspeed 2. The Southland. Hard to beat that combo.
Hey Kris!
Awesome video I learned a lot about stacking
I currently have a:
1. Greer Lightspeed
2. EHX Crayon
3. EQD Plumes
4. Source Audio L.A. Lady for different heavy gains and fuzzes.
What do you think about this?
Awesome video on stacking pedals. Were you running the amp through the OX? It sounds awesome!
Thanks man! Yes I was running the OX. What you hear is the pedals, REVV head clean channel, OX cab simulation straight into the Audient iD44 audio interface.
Thanks for the reply. Your videos are very informative and your playing is amazing. Keep up the great work
Man, like 90% of guitarists, i look at suhrs and prs and andersons as dream guitars....but since the day i have this harley benton...i haven't been able to get it out of my head!! Great playing and content as always....
Anmol Singh thanks a lot man! Yeah these Fusion models are surprisingly good for sure. I enjoy playing it a lot.
Hey Kris,
Awesome video.
Absolutely yes!! Awesome duo those two! And yes, TS first, BD-2 second. Cheers
@@KrisBarocsi Thanks for the reply! Will they work well with the Empress Buffer+ Boost?
Electro harmonix soul food ia a great budget alternative to klon. If u want an expensive one then buy the j rocket archer
I like OD after my fuzzes.
I just tried a klon ktr and Friedman dirty Shirley combo. Both of them going Into a jtm45. Interestingly I like the dirty Shirley first. I’m running it pretty dirty into a relatively clean ktr. It just seemed fatter that way.
I am stacking the following: Keeley Compressor plus into Paramount into MXR Timmy into Wampler Moxie. What’s your opinion of the order?
I use a mxr distortion+ vol max gain min to push some fatness into my mt-2 or a keeley modded mt-2 on a low gain setting pushing my REVV G3 for a mid boost 🤘🏽
Poo Ninja that sounds siiiiick dude! Would love to give your rig a go. 🤘
from clean to dirty like .... you know 🚽😂
Kris Barocsi I run it into a 1 12 floor monitor pointed at my face,212 fender open back cab, 412 sealed sunn cab and into a medium sized pa all in a 4x5 meter room 🤗 it sounds massive. your welcome to pop by if’n your in the area 👍🏽
My type of videos
So, compressor to a chorus to a behringer phazor,to another phaser, to a orange burst to a ds1 distortion to a big muff nano to amp hot mess, love it though
Hey man..nice video...so is it better to put the highest gain pedal on the last? And the overdrive that has mild gain in front?
Kris I stack a Fuchs plush drive in front of a Jhs Andy Timon's
The plush makes it rounder and pushes mids the AT provides the grit and bottom end without fizz
The other way round and it's mid hump mush all the way
Paul Dugdale good selection and great order! I would’ve done the aame thing. Cheers!
Very nicely detailed. I have a old DigiTech multi-effects pedal so I kinda sudo this. I really liked the sounds you achieved. That Revv...... now give the elf his damn guitar back!
TeMpiSSeD Haha! So you’ve seen that picture? You stalker! 🤣
By the way, that was an other silver sparkle guitar (a Knaggs) so I hope I can keep my Fusion. I’ll talk to him.
(long post alert)
At the moment I have 3 gain pedals at hand.
Cheers
@@_RLP yes, but with shipping, Im over the price of Bonsai. Thanks for reply 😉
@@KrisBarocsi thanks for the reply. I guess I'll look more into the 2nd overdrive option. Thinking about the EQD Plumes.
For Van Halen1 Wampler Pinnacle is really great (and it is not crazy money)
@@stanislavmigra thx man, will check it out
@@stanislavmigra Man I have to thank you. \m/

Yo thanx !
Cheers man!
Hi Kris,
Can I get a metallic sound out of a Klon and KOT (STACKED)?
I'm eyeing to get clones of these two.
But afraid that I won't get the tone that I want lol
Do you mean a good metal tone? Well I love a klon into KoT for high gain but if you want a really mean metal tone put an eq pedal after them to shape the tone even more. Then you can get any heavy tone out of them.
What are the best mid gain pedals to boost with a klon? 🤔
@@xAD21x Let me try to answer that in my next Comment Time video. 👍
Hello
Ts 9 in front of a boss sd1 ??
Awesome video. Is that fusion with stock pickups still? Cheers from Portugal 🎸🔥😄
Hey man, yes, the fusion still rocks the original pickups. I need some time to do some thinking, testing and research. First I also need to finish up my Squier bass. haha!
@@KrisBarocsi okay now that glittery baby is one step closer to my christmas tree 😄😋😂
But I'm still curious to see what pickups you'll put there cause I too love the bell like quality of a tele regardless and would love some of that in a HH config too 😝🔥🎸
I use my TC Zeus OD into the TC Magus DS
