GARY ABLETT cries to AFL over concussion money and the other bad stuff he has done.

- Gary Ablett is not a nice guy and is currently seeking compensation money from the AFL in regards to receiving concussions in his career.
He is a known drug user over the years and was even involved in the death of a young girl back in 2000.

Some people in the comments have claimed there is video of Ablett getting head knocks but I haven't seen them.
All I remember is Micky Martyn swiping at him while going for a mark and the goal post in Perth.
The goal post collision was more so his back than the head. If you can't recall that particular injury when it was nearing the end of Gary Ablett's career, how would you remember incidents in the early to late 80's? @@hotkeyafl
Another good video here. Riddle me this, players win the lottery by getting drafted to an AFL team to play football, what is the base pay these days, something like 300K + . I realise that back in the day when the likes of Ablett, Jarman, Platten, and a host of others were playing, the money isn't what it is now but sure as hell they went into it fully aware of the risk of injuries. They go into it knowing their careers have a shelf life. And as the years go by and society matures sure the new players get other perks, financial advice, greater health benefits, free agency etc... To think that these older players are now using CTE as a reason to launch legal action to get more money is so out of touch with society. Isn't Tuck's family also trying to get money out of the AFL and they can't find any record of him being knocked out playing AFL, he was an amateur boxer for a few years too. Where does it end mate, I hate the fact we're a letigious society and people don't accept their own decisions in life.
I agree with most of your points.
One of the main things is the opportunities they receive post footy that you mentioned.
Things like the Footy Show, life memberships, talk nights, dancing with the stars and other nonsense.
With Shane Tuck I do recall him getting knocked out several times on the footy field but yes he did boxing as well which didn't help.
He is one guy who had a serious case of CTE, depression and his dad knew what was coming. It's still crazy though seeking compensation.

I know he is seeking compensation for concussions, I just don't specifically recall any times that Ablett got knocked out.
I'm not saying he is a liar, but guys like Shaun Smith had notable hits over the years that can be easily seen through the footage.
@@hotkeyafl You said you don't recall him ever getting concussed. I have vision (15 isolated incidents) where he did indeed remain on the ground and clutching his head. The AFL would have this vision too.
Now how do we know it was a concussion? The fact he was sometimes helped back up to his feet by trainers and played on, well, this why we are seeing past players asking for compensation.
Perhaps they are indeed suffering health issues which only worsen in time.
The AFL made money off Gary Ablett's brand. He was a marquee name and was extensively used to promote their game.
Just keep that in mind.

But that was just another discussion point, the main point is that it is a contact sport and you accept the risks going in, adding to the contradiction that Ablett himself was a factor in causing a lot of concussions to other players.
It's a bit desperate to cry to the AFL for money.
Ablett got paid for his worth based on the market value at the time, just like the UFC fighters back in the early days.
Being the best player doesn't equal compensation, does that mean Shaun Smith and other lesser players don't deserve anything then?
@@hotkeyafl I don't believe the science around concussions and the ramifications of such head knocks were well known in the 80's when Gary began playing football.
Furthermore, players were sometimes concussed and re-entered the field at a later stage.
I completely agree, Gary himself was a dirty player and dished out some terrible hits to opposing players but that's irrelevant to the case at hand.
No one was aware of toxic chemical compounds produced in everyday housing products either. Now we are witnessing all sorts of litigation as workers succumb to the terrible effects of such work. Should those people not be allowed to seek retribution either?
I do not see the connection between a player of high standing vs a player like Shaun Smith?
Past players of all playing abilities have now commenced legal action.
50 games, 350 game, it's irrelevant to the legal proceedings.
My first thought was exactly that, 'i don't recall him ever suffering a concussion'. I've watched plenty of Gary Ablett highlight reels [as well as seeing him live]. They never get boring as all others do because he was a freak and i find myself watching the amazing things he did over and over and over. Things that no other player has ever done. He is shown receiving the odd knock to the head but never once did he seem debilitated for more than a few seconds, if at all and he was definitely never stretchered off or even helped off the ground by trainers for any head knock he may have received. Clearly the best player ever in my opinion but come on, 10 concussions?!

I would be curious to know how much he made during the course of his career and also the rough and tumble nature of the game, at least how it used to be, is a major factor as to why it became such a popular spectator event. If you didn't have that then the AFL wouldn't be anything near what it is today IMO. So it's a bit rich for Ablett to be crying for money to the same thing that gave him everything he has.
As for his case, well, whether he makes a dime out of it or not, one things for sure is that the ones who are guaranteed to get a payday from it are the lawyers.

Who knows, prob didn't make any serious money until club 10 came in around 1993 and by then he was close to retiring.
From memory Carey was on $1 million per year around 1998 and that was the highest at the time.
Yeah for sure, AFL sucks now with all the rule changes and soft woke folk like Damian Barrett having a say.
Ablett got plenty and I don't think players should seek concussion money when they actively tried to give out concussions.
Players happy to accept the rewards but not the risk, not how capitalism works.
When you consider how good he was and how many he pulled through the gates he was paid peanuts, especially compared to today's showponies, the afl made a fortune out of him so i hope he takes them for all they have.

There wasn't much in the White one....but not a fan of the Wellman Charge....I'd have given Gazza at least 8-10 weeks for that. Wellman is a ball-player, a much smaller guy and not a sniper at al...then again, who knows what went out on the ground between them - perhaps Wellman had asked for it in some way.
Speaking of which, the creeps in charge have themselves in knots as they don't understand what a Charge is...they can't differentiate between that and a Shepherd...it's become a complete joke.

All of these concussion lawsuits are a joke.....especially modern players as they all have access too head gear.
If I was AFL I would be mandating head gear immediately as they are just going to get lawsuit after lawsuit.
