@J G You say soccer is "massive in over 240 countries", but right now there's just 195 countries in the entire world! Just 195. If you can't even get that easily-found fact close to right, why would anyone take seriously anything else you've written?
Gary Ablett Sr was an absolute genius. He was hard, freakish, could kick a ball 50m either side of his body, punch a torp 60m into the breeze on the run (and it is rumoured he did this on the left, but I never saw that), leap higher than any ruckman of any era, outmuscle the strongest full backs and take one-arm speccies, run into a congested pack and come out with the ball, deliver a bump so hard that it could puncture the lungs of bearded giants, outsprint (in the 1980s at least) 90% of the competition, snap a goal from over his shoulder (again either side) from any pocket.... what else, need I go on? There is evidence of all of this.... look at the highlights. The guy simply was the most talented player going around, he was a footballing superman! This does not mean he was the best full forward, or the best wing, or the greatest half forward.... he transcended positions to a great extent and that in itself is his greatest attribute. To argue that any other player had these abilities is fruitless. I haven't seen 150 years of football, so sure I don't know, and yes there are better players in individual aspects.... but simply put: Ablett Sr was the package. Add to this, he played in a fairly tough era where umpire intervention was minimal - eg. defenders were allowed to scrag and chop - and you may come to an appreciation of the guy's abilities. If you really want to compare him to modern day stars, well then there is no comparison. Franklin can't take a pack mark nor use the other side of his body and to tell the truth doesn't put his head over it that much, Riewoldt has no distance on his kicks and just doesn't have awareness, Brown is bloody good at his best but again although having the courage and Careyesque stature, the freakish side of his game is not there. Pavlich at the very top of his game can do some pretty special things, and is actually quite similar to Ablett Sr as a package - it's just that he is about 80% of that full package! Comparing to stars of yesteryear, Mr Football was a tough as guts CHB but rarely went elsewhere, Leigh Matthews was just round ball tough, but certainly didn't have the skills of Ablett Sr (although he more than made up for it with his tenacity), Coleman didn't play the game long enough. I won't go on too long.... never really saw these players anyways. Ablett Sr without a doubt is the most talented footballer, certainly that I have seen. Again, he just had the whole package, abilities in every conceivable area. It does not mean he was the most valuable player to a team, but Captain Farking Obvious would have to agree that there has not been another player since who consistently displays these all-round abilities.

@J G Why are you here if afl isn't your thing? No-one's stopping you from watching soccer-so off you go and watch it. And remember not to blink during the game-you might miss all the scoring!
Kinda like asking you to pick a favourite child. Ablett is the best footballer I've seen in my lifetime (I'm 53) his final series in 1989 was the greatest three weeks I've ever seen one player put together, he was an unbelievably skilled footballer. Wayne Carey is that close to Ablett it's a whisker in it. Watching North on a Friday night was compulsory viewing in the 1990's, King Carey ruled in those days. Two absolute guns who were the pre-eminent players of their generation. Highlights package of these two would go for two weeks. The goal Ablett kicked against West Coast where he scoops it up at full speed was one of the great under appreciated goals of all time in my opinion. In the same game he balked right and left Michael Brennan grasping thin air and kicked it from 50 on his left. I will never forget those two goals as an Eagles fan.
As a cats supporter that 1994 prelim final was possibly the best game I've ever been to. Yes the Cats won because Ablett marked after the siren, but main reason was Carey was pretty much uncontrollable most of the game and the win was so unexpected. Two almost perfect players, two imperfect people. I don't think anyone can be a perfect person AND a perfect player.
Ablett's goal at 2:15 against the Pies where he fights off Kelly, busts through a tackle and puts it through post high in the wet is one of the best goals I've ever seen.
ask greg williams whos the most powerful players his ever seen its ablett, they donne a training drill throwing 8kg medicine ball ablett threw it 4 metres further than anyone and that includes damian bourke who was twice the size of him he was a freak
Ablett for me. Having said that there were some amazing Carey highlights. I was at the 89 Granny, my Cats lost that day to a deserving Hawthorn but for me it was Ablett above both teams. Remarkable
1030 goals and Ablett only played about 3-4 seasons at key forward - shouldn't have compared these two as if they were equals. They don't call him God for nothing.
who's better? WHO CARES!!!!......i'm just thank full i was able to watch these two incredible players perform as they did back in the day. Watching today's football is beyond LAME! I cant even watch it anymore.........the AFL has screwed up a great game.

Carey overall was the best player ever to play Aussie rules he could turn a game in a matter of minutes when all seemed lost, how he never won a Brownlow has both me and thousands amazed you didn't have to be a North Melbourne supporter to be amazed at the talent this man had and what a joy he was to watch play.
Defenders playing on Ablett would just drop their heads after he'd kicked 5 or more on them and they realised there was simply nothing they could do about it. That usually happened before half time. It was hugely entertaining to watch. The ground would be abuzz.
Realising only now, how privileged I was being on the outer at Kadinia Park from around 1987-1996 watching Gaz. After he retired, I had a recurring dream of him coming out of retirement, only to wake up and realise that a 40 or 50-something-old Gaz was disappointingly still retired. Oddly decades on, we've never seen anything like him.
Ablett, 24 less games than Wayne Carey, yet kicked 300 more goals, that stat alone should tell you, but all the same, having not seen a lot of these Carey highlights he was a marvel here, great to watch...two champions...go the Catters!
not an argument i wanted to see not everthing is about goals mate peter hudson kicked 727 in only 130 and had a greater average of 5.64 per game abletts average is only 4.15 so your making ablett look shit by saying this cos hudson is not better than ablett
I'm not a fan of either team and both are different styles of players. But in my opinion Ablett was the better of the two players, more agile, a high flyer, and tremendous when the chips are down.
The greatest forward of all time vs one that wouldnt make a lot of people top 10. No debate here. Nothing against Carey he was amazing. But there's an undeniable gap between how good they were. Ablett's lack of accolades are almost a kick in the face to how incredible he was. Should of been a premiership player, brownlow medalist and half a dozen more best and fairests. 10 goals in a losing game for 0 brownlow votes. It will be a great day when only midfielders arent considered for the brownlow cause its just in my opinion rigged to all shit.
ablett had the agility power and skills on the deck but he was also an incredible mark. how do you beat that one on one. need a freak athlete to do it.
All comes down to what you want to see as a fan. These are the 2 greatest forwards I’ve ever seen. If you want a player to get people to watch football and sheer excitement, Ablett is no. 1 but if you want your team to win, Carey for his dominance and leadership
Gary just, played wing and half forward for first 10 years then went to full forward and kick 100+ 3 years in a row. Carey and Ablett best 2 players I've seen though.
Great to see both these players, both were great. Todays football doesn't have these types of power players with enormous skills, just guys who can run fast.
For impact on a game there is no one better than Carey especially given CHF is the hardest position on the ground but I will never forget Ablett kicking 14 goals on a wing against Hawthorn. Ablett is a freak and i personally believe he was a better player even before he became a full forward, similar to Darren Jarman who both followed similar paths.
Jon Burrows, some people just don’t let go, that was 20 odd years ago, you need to move on pal, clearly everyone else has otherwise you wouldn’t see his head on the tv or hear him on the radio..... Yeah I get that might be a little hypocritical so what 😂
Look Ye I've been watching footy my whole life and Gary ablt snr and Carey r the best footballers I've ever seen in my life and I hope someday I can be like either one of them or Matty Lyoid he was also a freak bc at the moment I'm kicking at least three goals I'm my league and I'm only thirteen
ya wrong ablett played wing for a fair chunk of his career and only played full forward for the last 3 years of his career he played mostly half forward and is by far the greatest player the game has ever seen with daylight second and no one will ever convince me otherwise debate over i cant play any other players highlight reel longer than gary ablett's and no other player has bought a crowd through a gate more than he end of fucking story
what a silly argument one player doesnt win ya a premiership ya flog where is whayne carey's 3 coleman medals with dunstall and locket playing at the same time where is careys norm smith playing in a losing side he didnt even win one playing in a winning side ablett is better than carey even more than he is better than matthews your football knowledge is terrible
Gazza. No question. Remember he didn't go forward until Blight suggested he did. Played a lot of his career on the wing and still kicked over 1000. Kicked 14 in a game three times. Best ever, although his son is giving him a shake.
Too much to take into consideration to make them 1 and 2. The days of pagans paddock where Carey would be against two defenders and still muscle them out and kick a bag of goals. Then the freakishness off God. He could kick snap dribble a goal from anywhere in the 50. Either way they’re both going down in history as two of the best to strap on boots and play the game. Also throw in the mix Dunstall, Locket and Boomer. Anyways it was a good highlight package. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane.
By reading the comments below it just proves that some never saw Gary Ablett Snr play. To say Ablett was a full forward majority of his career where Carey could play all over the ground is utter nonsense. Also many "champion" players never won a premiership medal.
ABLETT WAS A BETTER PLAYER . 1.MARKING- FAIRLY EVEN, 2.PACE - ABLETT, 3.KICKING -ABLETT BOTH SIDES 4.GOAL KICKING-ABLETT 5.LEADERSHIP -CAREY 6.FREAKISH ABILITY-ABLETT 7.STATS- ABLETT 8.MEDALS- CAREY 9.STATE OF ORIGIN PERFORMANCE -ABLETT. ABLETT COULD PLAY IN THE MIDDLE , WING, FORWRD .CAREY HF OR FF ONLY. ABLETT IS IN TEAM OF THE CENTURY ALSO.
I just replied to the positions Ablett played and you don't even have an answer to your previous comment cause you talk shit ! Your theory about positions can be proved wrong by facts . As for Mike Sheehan , his opinion doesn't count as many other experts rate Ablett the best . So really your points are of no substance , now fuck off , and go somewhere else to play .
+shaxxxa No more time waisting on you , your too fucked up , your points have no truth to them . Ive waisted enough time on you , your too dumb , good luck with your life your going to need it
your wrong ya tosser you know nothing ablett started on the wing then half forward then full forward for the last 4 years of his career and medals mean nothing brownlows b&f' alpha awards leigh mattews trophy generally go to midfielders that a known fact more ppl use to pay just to watch abelett more than any other player in history his highlight reel is longer and better than any other the game has seen his the only player in history to get 10 goals or more 6 times in a season and there sides lost no other players feats will ever match what he achieved on the footy field not even jnr who i rate 2nd best ever
Don Derply silvagni kept him goalless in 95 grand final. Silvagni conceded one goal that entire finals series. He played on Carey, Ablett and some other bloke. The other guy that I can’t remember kicked 1 on him.
in finals ? i think you need your head check and do more research on careys finals performances you do realize north played in 7 preliminary finals in a row do you ???? your so clules delete your comment goose
The reality is ablett had the single greatest finals series ever. 1989. Highest level of football ever played. Ok series in 92. Then two below pars in 94 & 95. Carey was solid across all his without being as brilliant as abletts 89 but not having the lows of abletts 94 & 95. Probably a draw in the end.
All the Brownlows pretty much go to midfielders,no offence but a few of them hardly anyone remembers or talks about.Shane Woewoden,Mitchell from Hawthorn,Cooney, and many others. The Carey's,and Albetts of this world are the type of guys that are household names and get legendary status
I dont think winning games and premierships has alot to do with why they are being compared..if that was the case there is nothing you need to watch..this is about pure football ability and its very very close..id say ablett just..just
Think Albert had the edge on and off the field....ablett murdered a teen girl in a hotel room compared to Carey who was "only" a womanizing sociopath that's gone through life only worrying about number 1
Carey because not only was he was a great player, but he was also a great leader and played well when it counted, but for sheer ability and freakishness there has never been a player than Ablett Sr.It's a disgrace that neither ever won a Brownlow.
Both were amazing and we were blessed to see them play in the same era. Gazza was the most exciting player however if you were putting together the greatest team of all time Kezza would be your first pick every time! He is the best leader and most inspirational captain i've ever seen.
Haha you would have both as Gazza never played in centre half forward, Gazza played wing and forward flank before being the best full forward to watch the game has seen and he still kicked kicked over 1000 goals.
ablett was great to watch he was first, kinda like magic in the NBA, but carey is always jordan for me. - if he was at the 55m mark he didnt have to dribble around like ablett. it's fkn going through the centre haha
Carey was great but there was something very special about gary ablett snr. Gary ablett snr is the 2nd best player to ever play this game followed by one tony lockett 😉
Two Cats/Kangaroos/AFL legends I know the debate like many others is who was/is better?.Personally for me can't split obviously grew up watching both play two champions.
multiple positions he was always a forward player and even if he playd in multiple possitions how that make him better doesnt mean he was good in every position and ablett started on the wing befor move to half forward and the last 3 years of his career full forward
Great White7 Gary Ablett had 17 Possessions and kicked 3 goals from the HFF in the 1992 Grand Final, that's not going missing, that's a good game. Ablett's' best returns in Grand Finals are 9 Goals and Norm Smith Medal, and 3 goals and 17 possessions. Carey best returns are 1 & 2 goals. Gary Ablett also holds the record for the most amount of goals kicked in a finals series, 27. Gary Ablett has a much better finals record than Wayne Carey.
Great White7 Yeah and Justin Madden has won a Grand Final and Gary Ablett hasn't, does that make him a better player just because he's won a Grand Final? Ridiculous logic. Winning a Grand Final is a team effort, Wayne Carey played in a better team then Gary Ablett. Gary Ablett played better in finals, was way more talented! and was a better player than Wayne Carey.
+AFFTL You cant say Ablett is better than Carey when Abletts "team" is 0-4 from Grand Finals, while Careys is 2-1. If Ablett was as good as you think he was, his "team" would have won at least TWO grand finals, if not 3-4.
Ablett could do things no one else can do. He was unbelievable.

the King
Ablett was the best
Pay to watch: Ablett.. To Win You a Game: Carey
They are 1st and 2nd, Just cant figure out the order
Justin Kennedy ones the GOAT and the other is the BOAT, just can’t work out who is which.
Gary Ablett jnr then snr the Leigh Matthews and then idk maybe duck
Doc Vids you again hahaha. Mate Snr is 10 times better than jnr, your not very educated
@doc your not wrong. Probably never saw snr play.
Your Nan my opinion
Look Ye I've been watching footy my whole life and Gary ablt snr and Carey r the best footballers I've ever seen in my life and I hope someday I can be like either one of them or Matty Lyoid he was also a freak bc at the moment I'm kicking at least three goals I'm my league and I'm only thirteen
Each game
I kicked 13 goals in a final and I’m 13 too
Gary Ablett clearly is the greatest player of all time!
+AFFTL Careyyyyyyyyyy is better 2 premiership
AFFTL besides E.J Whitten
So Who Is? Clearly you seen them all Time Traveler?
ya wrong ablett played wing for a fair chunk of his career and only played full forward for the last 3 years of his career he played mostly half forward and is by far the greatest player the game has ever seen with daylight second and no one will ever convince me otherwise debate over i cant play any other players highlight reel longer than gary ablett's and no other player has bought a crowd through a gate more than he end of fucking story
what a silly argument one player doesnt win ya a premiership ya flog where is whayne carey's 3 coleman medals with dunstall and locket playing at the same time where is careys norm smith playing in a losing side he didnt even win one playing in a winning side ablett is better than carey even more than he is better than matthews your football knowledge is terrible
Ablett was a freak but the Duck is the 🐐
Carey was a star, Ablett was a galaxy.
Great analogy
1:12 PURE ABLETT SNR.
Ablett easily
Could have found better Carey highlights. He took a lot of spectacular marks like Ablett, in particular in his earlier years.
By reading the comments below it just proves that some never saw Gary Ablett Snr play. To say Ablett was a full forward majority of his career where Carey could play all over the ground is utter nonsense. Also many "champion" players never won a premiership medal.
ablett loved the goal square carey loved the footy oval
@@Megalosmalakas1977 You know zero about sport let alone what Ablett and Carey did on the footy field.
Carey is my GOAT CHF and Ablett Snr would be half forward
ABLETT WAS A BETTER PLAYER . 1.MARKING- FAIRLY EVEN, 2.PACE - ABLETT, 3.KICKING -ABLETT BOTH SIDES 4.GOAL KICKING-ABLETT 5.LEADERSHIP -CAREY
6.FREAKISH ABILITY-ABLETT 7.STATS- ABLETT 8.MEDALS- CAREY 9.STATE OF ORIGIN PERFORMANCE -ABLETT. ABLETT COULD PLAY IN THE MIDDLE , WING, FORWRD .CAREY HF OR FF ONLY. ABLETT IS IN TEAM OF THE CENTURY ALSO.
You have no fucking idea what your talking about.. That is the worst logic ever. Carey played all over the ground while Ablett never left the forward.
Ive waisted enough time on you , your too dumb , good luck with your life your going to need it
Who gives a fucking shit what Mike Sheahan proclaims? Ablett clearly far greater than Carey as a player, man on man.
your wrong ya tosser you know nothing ablett started on the wing then half forward then full forward for the last 4 years of his career and medals mean nothing brownlows b&f' alpha awards leigh mattews trophy generally go to midfielders that a known fact more ppl use to pay just to watch abelett more than any other player in history his highlight reel is longer and better than any other the game has seen his the only player in history to get 10 goals or more 6 times in a season and there sides lost no other players feats will ever match what he achieved on the footy field not even jnr who i rate 2nd best ever
Carey had a tendancy to go missing in big games and Grand Finals, Ablett might be the best big game performer of all time
Don Derply silvagni kept him goalless in 95 grand final. Silvagni conceded one goal that entire finals series. He played on Carey, Ablett and some other bloke. The other guy that I can’t remember kicked 1 on him.
Ducked into the bathroom maybe..
in finals ? i think you need your head check and do more research on careys finals performances you do realize north played in 7 preliminary finals in a row do you ???? your so clules delete your comment goose
There both as good i canrt choose
ablett is the greatest by so far a length there is no possible comparison you could ever find to get close
ABLETT=GOD
If G Ablett senior was playing now.....by golly he'd probably be on 3 million a year.
Coaches would want Carey, for the leadership factor. One on one, Ablett would win, he just has a little bit more of everything else.
Carey he stands out in games that he needs to
I dont think winning games and premierships has alot to do with why they are being compared..if that was the case there is nothing you need to watch..this is about pure football ability and its very very close..id say ablett just..just
what did ablett do in the 89 final series idiot 27 (still a record now) and 9 in a losing grand final yeah but he did nothing in big games
Great decoy work by Brownless 😂
Think Albert had the edge on and off the field....ablett murdered a teen girl in a hotel room compared to Carey who was "only" a womanizing sociopath that's gone through life only worrying about number 1
Carey because not only was he was a great player, but he was also a great leader and played well when it counted, but for sheer ability and freakishness there has never been a player than Ablett Sr.It's a disgrace that neither ever won a Brownlow.
Lol a great leader doesn't go and fuck a team mates wife
Ablett
Snr
Both were amazing and we were blessed to see them play in the same era. Gazza was the most exciting player however if you were putting together the greatest team of all time Kezza would be your first pick every time! He is the best leader and most inspirational captain i've ever seen.
Haha you would have both as Gazza never played in centre half forward, Gazza played wing and forward flank before being the best full forward to watch the game has seen and he still kicked kicked over 1000 goals.
Also do the best leaders do what he did
Carey won two premierships. He wins.
Duck is the best player ever to walk the earth
what would you know your a woman with an opinion it doesnt count
ablett was great to watch he was first, kinda like magic in the NBA, but carey is always jordan for me.
- if he was at the 55m mark he didnt have to dribble around like ablett. it's fkn going through the centre haha
Carey was great but there was something very special about gary ablett snr. Gary ablett snr is the 2nd best player to ever play this game followed by one tony lockett 😉
Ablett more of a freak but Carey the best player I ever saw
As Rex Hunt used to yell out: Aaaaaabbbbletttttttttttt!!!!!!
Did i just see dustin fletcher do a specy on someones shoulders to try and sheppard the ball mid air lol
No players before ?
Two Cats/Kangaroos/AFL legends I know the debate like many others is who was/is better?.Personally for me can't split obviously grew up watching both play two champions.
All else being equal (which it’s not) Carey was a grub for doing what he did, it’s about off the field antics as well.
Have you heard of alisha Horan
@@crutches111 Ablett was retired, what he did as a private person post career is his business. Not the same thing!
Is this even fair? Carey was by far the better player. Played multiple positions and dominated. Ablett was good at taking "marks of the year"
multiple positions he was always a forward player and even if he playd in multiple possitions how that make him better doesnt mean he was good in every position and ablett started on the wing befor move to half forward and the last 3 years of his career full forward
Yep Ablett had 4 chances in Grand Finals and went missing in 3 of them. Its the defining factor overall IMO.
And yet he never won a grand final.
If Ablett was as good as you think he was, his "team" would have won at least TWO grand finals, if not 3-4.
lol
G ablett is the real king. No comparison
Alert easily won!!!!
