    My dad and I were there that day, 9 in the wing in 3 quarters then 5 in the last quarter.
    His 14th was kicked from 55m out on the boundary from a mark, never looked like going threw then it curved back AMAZING day

    I was lucky enough to be sitting in the old Southern Stand on that day. I watched the Great Man at his very very best. What a privilege!

      @@jonburrows9816 Realistically I'd put them equal but because of the different standards and professionalism of their times, I feel Matthews was well ahead of his time. Just my opinion.
      To open another can of worms,
      what do you think... Senior or Junior?

    To see old footage of Gary playing it brings back memories of how great he was he was nicknamed GOD and you can see why...

    The greatest really. With the greatest respect to Leigh Matthew’s (who couldn’t do everything that Ablett could do but Ablett could do everything that Matthew’s did)

      Oh Really?......Barney took Hawthorn to 4 Flags, winning 3 of his 8 Best & fairest's in those years..... How many flags did Ablett take the Cats to?....Barney also kicked 11 goals & had over 40 possies against Essendon in 1973, as first Rover....He also kicked 91 goals in 1977 playing as the First Rover.

There is one thing he could do that Ablett couldn't though: breaking a players jaw with a king-hit from behind. What a champ!

      @MANCHESTER UNITED F.C Your point about Pele is stupid. Pele was a wogball player, and was far better at it than Gazza. On an Aussie rules field, Pele wouldn't have stood a chance against Gazza, or any other top Aussie rules player. Aussie Rules fans don't give a shit how big soccer is, mate. Bigger does not mean better. You don't see our players carrying on like girls when they break an eyelash, and you don't see our players tripping over non existent obstacles in an endeavor to get an easy kick. Wanker.

From 1925 on - you had 3 easy-beats in North, Footscray & Hawthorn join the competition - & his record of dining out against those new teams, blew out his goal-scoring feats & padded his stats significantly......Pales by comparison to Ablett's era.

      And SOS refused to watch his son's 100th game. He left Marvel stadium and listened to the game in his car. All because he had a falling out at the Blues and now assistant to Ross Lyon at St.Kilda.

    GOD kicked 9 goals from the wing that day, before going up forward. 60-70 metres out, no problem. On his left foot, no problem.

    Stevie J is the 2nd best player of all time behind Ablett senior. I'm an Essendon fan. But those two are the smartest footballers with natural ability

    Ablett was up there with the greats...but nowhere near say, Syd Coventry...nowhere near.......check out Coventry's record...across the following headings...first to play 300......first to kick 100 goals in a season......held total career goal kicking record for 55 years until Plugger took it.......captained 5 Premierships.....played in a record breaking 4 consecutive Premierships...won the goal kicking in his last year at age 37.......leading goal kicker six times.........leading club goal kicker 15 times in 17 years.....there's more but I cannot remember them all....oh yeah...kicked 17 goals twice, and kicked 15,14,13 so many times that he couldn't exactly remember them all when asked......and represented Victoria 24 times.......and I'm betting there's more.....
