People only remember him as a great full forward, but when he was playing off half forward/wing earlier in his career he was an absolute unbelievable freak. Before media football saturation he was flying under the radar down at Geelong and only played in that famous state game in WA when he kicked 8 off half forward (yes - half forward!) because Ted Whitten was a selector and commentator on 3GL or K-Rock or whatever they were then, said that Ablett had to play when not too many outside Geelong knew much except that he was Geoff’s brother. Check the 7 bullet points, It is almost as if they are a direct description of Hodge.
I would also suggest the tiges have somebody similar with Cotchin. He probably wasn't born for the role like Hodge but has grown into it which makes it all the more impressive. Again i think there is a fair bit of cause and effect with Cotchins growth as leader and tigers success. If you were trying to apply the same standards to Ablett, He falls a long way short. Again i will state my bias, The first item of clothing i ever wore was a hawthorn scarf (My grandad got to the hospital before my dad so saved me from a life as a StKilda supporter) I do have what is probably an anti Geelong bias to but i don't think that affects my opinions of individual players much, I would put Ablett snr in the best 3 of all time.

Lance Franklin without a doubt the best player of the 21st Century, Last player to kick 100 goals in a season he'll be the last player to kick 1000 afl goals
How many amazing midfielders have we had in this century? Cousins, Judd, Sam Mitchell, Pendlebury, Martin, Akermanis, Swan, Fyfe, Buckley, Voss?
Now tell me how many amazing forwards they've been that have had the impact Lance Franklins had? Probably Fevola, Brown, Kenney? and even they haven't achieved the goal accolades that Franklin has. Amazing Midfielders are a dime a dozen an amazing forward is rare to find

    Peak-judd
All time in career of 21st century-ablett
Finals-martin, but Martins 2017 year was a masterpiece. 07-14 Ablett was amazing too, including 09 and 13 brownlows, but that 2017 year, I was in awe, he set the benchmark for the game today.
There's so many ways to go over these stats, like you ask me, Lockett will always be number 1 full forward, Franklin is the greatest forward utility in the history of the game, Carey at centre half forward, playing anywhere, Ablett Sr, Rance at full back, Hodge is in a defence/midfield role for me as well and is the greatest captain ever, but all time greatest ever is say Leigh Matthews. 8 premierships as a coach and footballer, 11 GFS all up across 33 years, that's a grand final every 3 years and a flag every 4.25 years, 4 at hawthorn arguably the greatest club ever, broke Collingwood's 3 decade drought against another top 4 best team ever of Essendon who had a 2x at the time who went on to be a 4x premiership coach with essendon and can be argued pound for pound with Leigh and Mick Malthouse as greatest coach ever, and he beat Sheedy's Essendon side and Sheedy was 10 years in as a coach, Collingwood were in a rebuild 4 years previous when Leigh started coaching, and took Brisbane to a three-peat, regardless of salary bonuses and priority pickings, you still need to pick right, and that team is still admired and gossiped about to this day for having superstars across all lines of the field, not to mention is the literally documented as player of the (20th) century.. was a rover and won a Coleman medal too. That's just my opinion.

Ablett jr is clearly the most over rated player of all time.. He is good,
no doubt about that but there are plenty of players to add to the list for best
this century and he should not even be mentioned in the greatest of
all time, he isn't even the greatest in his family. The list of great midfielders
runs deep even this century we have Judd, Voss, Mitchell,
Pendlebury, Martin. I could go on but just with those 6 (including Ablett jr)
you would not be disappointed if you got left with number 6. Put the Forwards
in a schoolyard pick and it is Franklin every time. I'm not even sure the next 3-5 are obvious
Maybe Mathew Lloyd, Fevola, Gherig, Eddie Betts. (Have i missed somebody obvious?)
My conclusion is Franklin is head and shoulders above all other forwards this century,
Ablett jr is one of 6-8 that you could make a decent argument for being the best mid.

Lol ablett was the best player for 10 syraight years from 2007 to 2016 when he did his shoulder.
Lance has not had the consistency as ablett and has been average the last 3 years through car crashing, drugs and injuries.

@@HeywoodJablowme7 In 2017 Franklin kicked 73 goals, hardly average as you claim. If you think Abletts last 3 years at goldcoast compare any better to Franklins last 2 years then we would have to disagree. From 07 - 17 there was only 1 year he didn't kick at least 50 goals and even that one year he kicked 47. I would call that pretty consistent. The biggest difference between the 2 though is Impact. Franklin consistently turned games while Ablett jr racked up large numbers getting handball receives at the back of gold coast packs.

You did miss somebody obvious you moron.. Reiwolt times 2 should be on your forwards list ahead of mos of the others you named but Franklin still head and shoulders above them to.

Lol thats why majority of people rank ablett as a better player.....
And noone puts franklin over Carey as a better centre half forward either.
When friends and opponents all say hes the GOAT, thats what counts not randos on RUclips.

@@HeywoodJablowme7 Now you are just making up things. Who is this majority?
Im not sure what Carey has to do with a conversation about the best in the 2000s.
What friends say about him is clearly biased, that should be self evident. If you were to pick
a forward plus a midfielder, from the 2000s to start to base a team around, I would be ecstatic
to have Franklin and Judd you can have Ablett and who-ever else and If you believe you would
have an advantage, again we would have to agree to disagree.
If the opinion of randos on youtube dont count for anything, then why are you being a rando on youtube?

Ablett spends most of his time on the outside of a pack waiting for someone else to go get the ball and give him the easy possession. .. so many more valuable players in the league .

Gold Coast needs to fold. Could be the silver lining of this virus. AFL need to swallow their pride. GC are an embarrassment to the integrity of the sport. VFL teams would rate themselves a chance.

Lists have been reduced to 35. I can see it now, GC will get priority picks/first dibs on all the other teams delisted players. Guarantee it.

Judd was far better in his prime. No questions asked.
    Cousins equalled ablett.
    Judd is the GOAT.
