I am lifelong North and one weird piece of trivia is that despite playing Essendon for close to 100 years we have never beaten them by 10 goals. The best being 59pts in 1985 - the year the Bombers won the flag by 78 !!! Haven't beaten them for 5 years and after yesterday's result, could be another 5.
My father always said that the North - Essendon rivalry was alive and well as far back as the Coleman era of 1949 and especially 1950 when they played off in the Grand Final. It was also a bit about a northern suburbs rivalry. When they had the old zoning system, there was some dislike as North and Essendon often argued over boundaries and who should get which players. I've been and Essendon fan all of my life and I don't have issues with the Kangas. Hawthorn are the team we must beat. Carlton are a very close second, we like to knock them off too.
Every year the used to have a fan survey on The Sun. Every year Collingwood fans responded that they hated Carlton the most and every other Clubs’ fans hated Collingwood the most except North fans who hated Essendon the most. (North fans also hated Carlton who like Essendon were rich and Footscray because they were Protestant non drinkers … they liked Geelong because they helped North early on …. Back when footy was religion and not for television audiences.)
Norths plan was to merge, then conduct a board takeover and just rename Essendon as North Melbourne. North told all their good players to go and sign with Essendon, then the VFA sued to stop the merger, then expelled them for a year. Somehow that became Essendons fault

There’s no Essendon vs North rivalry. It’s a big game to north but just a normal game to Essendon. Essendon have bigger fish to fry with Carlton, Collingwood and Hawthorn rivalries while north are trying to stay relevant and try to sell out marvel.
@@dylansimonella599 so I guess it’s the same when he speaks of the rivalries with Hawthorn, Collingwood and Carlton? Because your argument would lead us to believe that he’s just getting paid to make matches interesting. Because let’s be realistic, it’s not a rivalry for Hawthorn, they are well beyond Essendon. Carlton have zero rivalries left, and Collingwood at this point in time are irrelevant so there may be a rivalry there at best. And the only reason that is, is because you are handed a day that allowed for 80 thousand in Anzac Day.
Funny how Lloyd only shows when his team won, not when North DESTROYED them and everyone else on the way to becoming the team of the decade... 1 side of a story rarely explains the whole story
Lloyd doesn’t have a clue. The rivalry goes back to the first half of last century when Essendon tried to get North out of the league. Additionally, Essendon was run by Masons and North was largely Catholic. Bitter enemies long before the 1950 Grand Final & well before Lloyd who ought to get his fact straight. It doesn’t all centre around him.
