Just be like me, and mash every single button, accidentally pausing the game
Once I mashed so weirdly that I almost accidentally closed the game
TheWaffl accidentally? I did it on purpose
@@pavlox8099 Wow, I'm proud of you
TheWaffl why did i laugh at this
My brother does this lmao
I swear some people online mash their way out of a grab in like half a second, maybe less
Here’s how you do it so you have to remap your dpad to all being shield and then just destroy your dpad
Keep in mind that the less damage you have the faster you can mash out.
@@arc3944 I found this not as helpful bc I think mashing inputs is faster when you alternate between the types of inputs. So like pressing attack then special is faster than just rapidly pressing attack in order to mash. Cause essentially when you map all four directions to just shield, you're inputting just one type of input. I could be wrong however, it's just something I noticed.
Tyler Traywick You are correct about regular grabs and kirbys Inhale but while being grounded I honestly don’t know ruclips.net/video/lOkEfb50zVs/видео.html
well they are already used to mashing
That half a second at 3:15 could also be because of the 4% damage difference between Falco and Dark Samus. My guess is that Inklings roller was getting stale, and that caused the difference. Since the knockback is typically weaker as well, that could also change the amount of time in the ground. I don't know how much that changes your data, but I noticed a few other times where you ended up at different percentages.
Still, this is informative. Thanks!
Remove as many variables as possible including smaller/bigger hurtboxes. use the same receiving end character. start Rolling at the very beginning of the platform(side roll to edge)
...or perhaps take an average of many measurements? xD
Smash bros is a game that makes you and others break the controller
Yeah I have a feeling that the only reason this mechanic was ever a thing is to increase the rate in which your controller breaks so they can sell more controllers. They can last a very long time if you’re not bashing the hell out of them
@theFareulookinat thats cool and so but who asked?
@theFareulookinat I have recently rediscovered my anger management issues after purchasing the game for the first time ever.
@@Joe-xv9kd You just did 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
Pro players say it's best to spin the stick and mash just 1 face button. Apparently it only counts as 1 input if all buttons are pressed around the same time.
For real?
Gobi_CSR idk if that’s true. If u hit a directional arrow and a button at the same time, it will still only count as one input. So it’s likely that it would be just as fast as simply spinning the joy stick. I could be wrong though. Maybe the button input takes priority whenever it’s done simultaneously, thus allowing u to get out a little faster?
While it is true that pressing multiple buttons at one doesn’t work, pro player actually mash by sliding their thumb over the four buttons, otherwise they’d get hit by every grounding combo
@@squiddyseut6103 so its analog stick + four buttons at the same time?
@@danielrocha941 Yes. You rotate the analog stick while sliding a finger over the four buttons repeatedly as to not press multiple buttons at once. I believe it's the best way to mash
Two ways to improve the accuracy of your experiment would be to increase the number of 'trails' per 'type' of mash and then trading the controls and repeating the process.
For exsample; Repeat the 'sticks only' mash trial three times instead of just once to insure consistent time results. Then Trade controllers and repeat the trials to insure one player isn't mashing more efficiently than the other, which would result in biasing your time results.
Great video! Keep up the content!
I’ve been meaning to look this up for a while, thank you for the extensive detail and multiple test runs with both controllers. This is definitely gonna help me stay in elite smash
*Elegant is laughing at this*
Elegant watches our videos? Sounds cool to me
Meta Of Smash Haha, that might be the case! Anyways, it was mainly a joke because of his insane mashing skills. This comment could be mentioned in any mashing tips video.
Btw! I really enjoyed your video. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for this. Bury moves off of throws or inklings roller are the very definition of matchup check
I feel like this would’ve been a better test if each method was done for a set number of times and averaged out in the end since we’re measuring such a small unit of time
Cool idea! I don't see this anywhere else in the comments, but spinning the C stick only counts the initial input and not every angle change so to use it to mash you have to reset it to the center after every direction. Same principle for when you mashed using shield bound to the taunt keys, since you are imputing shield over and over, if you mash fast enough it just registers it as holding down shield which is only one mash input so to use the taunt keys to mash you have to bind them to different inputs.
Hearing those buttons give me fox flashbacks
Finally! Been waiting for a video like this, thank you.
what about if im using an arcade stick and drum sets probably have godlike mashing
Just play a song
“Oh shoot, I’m grounded again. Anyway, here’s Through the Fire and Flames by Dragonforce.”
Hydrofyre sorry I'm late but I just gotta say this is the funniest thing I've read all week
Thank you so much for covering this! Liked and subscribed!
im happy i could help! if you have any questions or have something you would like me to cover feel free to let me know!
Thank you. Ive been wondering ever since release
Whos Tanks no problem dude. That's what we are here for!!
I remember a video from zero saying that what he does is replaces the taunts on the d pad with shield and uses that to mash. That way every direction is counted as an input. I think this is worth testing as well!
Subbed, Great informative video worth every second.
You deserve more subs man good work!😁
Thank you so much, I needed this :)
Glad we could help!
Very informative and interesting. You can hypothesize what you said in your conclusions, but I don't think it's very definitive. Shadow might not have been used to using triggers and stick and face buttons for mashing, but perhaps when he gets used to it, it could be just as effective as with a pro controller. It's hard to conclude anything without at least repeating the experiments 10+ times and taking an average. It's not like mashing is a very consistent, controlled input, so there's bound to be variability in all methods, which is also important. Mashing with all buttons might be the fastest (mean time) but might not be the most consistent (high variability in repeated experiments). If using control stick is slightly slower, but very consistent, it might be a better option overall. Anyway, just a thought if you ever feel like doing a follow-up video, thanks for this!
I've seen another video suggesting that mashing the D-pad is the fastest since you can register more inputs per second that way compared to the joystick or other buttons. What are the results of mashing the D-pad by itself?
I'm especially curious about D-pad vs joystick method since you'd have to move your thumb first, which costs time.
I personally mash with A and L and IT works as a charm.
A couple questions. I use a pro controller btw. Does this work as well with grabs? Also does it work better when you mash two buttons or just one? I usually just jam the X button jump and don’t touch any of the other buttons to get out. Does it actually work better when you press between two buttons is what I’m asking?
I play jigglypuff, so when i mash i avoid the b button altogether, so that when i mash out i input an aerial instead of risking rest and sing
What i like to do is start inputting an air dodge right when you think your going to escape things at high percent but i also mix it up sometimes
Thanks for the Ness Tutorial
i would like to also say for these tests that one person could just be moving faster than the other person, so also take that into account
hey so would you suggest i use the shoulder buttons if i have a hori gamecube controller, which has digital triggers?
I play with a switch pro controller design as a gamecube controller aka a wireless gamecube controller...more less, I wanted to know if the sticks would be analog or digital?
I have my triggers set to jump and shield, x and Y set to grab and jump. So I spin the control stick and mash x, y, and the triggers. So no matter how I mash I’m almost slays garunteed to air dodge or jump off of mashes.
Thanks for this video. I’m tired of dying to DK because of bad mashing.
When they say mash with pro controller triggers are they placing two fingers on just the bottom buttons or use four fingers to hit all four?
Austin Le all four.
I love breaking my controller to get out of inkling roller.
Why would you not use the same character?
Because the character you're using doesn't matter in mashing times
@@LOTHMT No, it doesn't. It just doesn't. If it did then we'd see a consistent winner between the two. One would be inherently better at mashing than the other. The fact that there is no consistency in which came out first means there was no difference. Especially considering they were using the same mashing method at the same time.
@@gerg905 if you'd look you'd see trixx actually was the consistent winner. This was attributed to the pro controller, but there could be different aspects to grounding, like weight, that we don't know about. This test wasn't very well done to begin with.
No, if there was such a mechanic we'd know by now after the huge fiasco of burying which sparked this video. Weight has never been attributed to bury time. Bury time is only attributed to the move's base time, multiplier, and mashing. Each input cuts a specific amount of time off depending on whether it was a button press or a stick roll.
Why do you guys keep insisting there must be a new mechanic when it's never existed before and there's no evidence to prove it and even game file data to denounce it?
@@gerg905 never said there was. Just said it could be. Once again, the test is very inconsistent in many ways.
For the Switch Pro you conclude that quickest is just shoulder buttons at something like 1.48s. But the only run that gives you that time out of the 7 is using control stick, face buttons and shoulder buttons...
I typically just mash everything. But I get screwed up all the time by random inputs after mashing out. I feel like just mashing the left stick might be the way to go now.
Thanks!
I smell a fox main
im relieved its the triggers because i dont want another broken control stick
Good vid👍🏽
I once broke my brother’s shield while we were playing and I swear to god he got out of it in less than 1 second
Elliot Peters fine, 1.5 seconds
so stick jump doesn't affect the stick mash?
So the best way to mash on a pro controller is face buttons (abxy) and the triggers/bumpers? with no stick?
G.M. Jackson yes. Because if you use the stick you might input an up b and get punished even harder
What are bumpers and triggers?
What's about mashing with the stick, ANXY and Z with a GameCube controller ?
game cube controllers also have slightly higher input lag than pro controllers due tl the usb and adapter, but this may not matter too much
What if it’s 3rd party and only needs the usb? Is that less latency?
Me, as a right handed, leave the right hand from the buttons and I start mashing the control stick
I just spin my control stick. Super easy, good and not bad for your controller.
TrippyThreat yea but it’s not like my gamecube controller’s gonna be breaking anytime ever
I use a pro controller and mash with the control stick and shoulder buttons
I normally mash the a and x usually sure my thumb is burning after that but still
Using the face buttons in addition to the left stick only helps you save .2 seconds aprox, still worth doing I guess
Angel Acevedo García think of it this way 2 tenths of a second is 12 frames. A move with 12 frames of end lag is something you would try to punish. So that can still be a pretty big deal 👀
But, when i use shoulder buttons i ended getting an air dodge, sometime ending in SD... how to avoid this? i get is the fastest, but, which is the safest?
Aside from the video, only use control stick or only use face buttons. c - stick and shoulder buttons/triggers are useless. The *safest* option would to only spin the control stick. It'll always be a bit slower than mashing the face buttons, but you won't accidentally imput random moves.
You guys should have just invited Nairo to do the entire video
why?
You need a larger sample size for it to be conclusive.
I can’t wait to break all my friends joycons when we play
Casual Players:

Great video, but I just wanted to point out that a new "tech" has been found with mashing. I don't exactly remember all the details but essentially, AB smash is supposed to be the fastest/best way to mash, simply because all other inputs give you at least 1 null frame where you can't input anything, but with AB smash you can. So in theory, you could mash 40% faster doing an absolutely horrible AB smash, than doing a really good random input mash.
@@Suigi A+B smash is just a Macro for using a smash attack. You can find it in your controller setup next to tap jump and rumble.
Update: This no longer works due to Nintendo feeling the need to nerf everything for no reason
small correction, C stick does help however it only registers one input making it useless
Lynxano so it doesn’t help

Zero and a few other pros say the best method to mash is to bind shield to all d pad buttons and roll them
Mashing with the triggers is only possible with a PDP Gamecube controller in the Gamecube controller's case as it uses triggers instead of analog triggers
You had staling on which caused you at times to be a lower percent than shadow and those were also your faster times
So I don’t think it was completely fair the entire time
This needs more data points
I mean, we also need to keep in mind that this also can be heavily altered by the fact that these are humans performing the mash. If they setup a mash bot then the results would be much different
K4tZ1ll4 when you get a bot to mash for you during a tournament set, let me know
@@MetaOfSmash I feel that's missing the point- the point is, human error/inconsistency is a thing, while testing with a bot would remove that variable somewhat.
Obviously, no one's playing with bots during a tournament, but this would be a more scientific method and give us a flat number to work with and further testing with humans inputting from there would make more sense- that way, you could see which differences are more likely to be because of differences in the person (handedness/experience with the controller etc. etc.) than with the raw timing of a fully optimal set of inputs- we could more objectively see which one was the potentially better option with practice that way.
I have one finger for the D-pad, Face buttons, Each of the sticks, And pair od shoulder button
Wait so mashing to wake up faster is easier in later percentages?
I can't follow you for I am hella confused lol. So you mash with the Control-Stick in 1.76s and with face buttons in 1.56s. But you say it was SLOWER for you and faster for shadow (who couldn't improve his time of 1.80s and got 1.84s instead. Maybe you could add text boxes that correct those statements(?). Would be helpful, I guess. Subscribed nonetheless because your content is of high quality!
Ya then I see nairo just bounce of the ground
I'm saying
I like how the D pad in the thumbnail is unaffected.
What did you each have XYAB bound to? This matters, if they are all separate actions, buttons will be more efficient as theres no overlap in inputs.
Edit: i see some bindings at the end. With the dpad example, rather than mashing shield you're basically just holding shield due to input overlap, doesn't help the mash. In brawl you could rise with Luigi tornado by binding all d-pad to B, but in Smash 4 and Ultimate you can't rise with Dr Mario's tornado using this method.
MASHIN
kinda late but, what if you were to only spin the c stick by itself, wouldn’t that improve time for right handed players?
Bharlitos the c stick does not effect mashing. Only the left stick
How do I mash with a power glove and dance pad.

Put just dance on a second moniter
What is face buttons?
Do the d pas option but change all of them to different things like attack, special, and jump instead of just shield. It is fastest mashing in my opinion.

When i saw the video i thought you would talk about how to mash when you play it would be funny if it was
An extra level of thoroughness would be for you all to switch controller and perform the experiment again
Dam what about joy cons? This is really useful though, thank you.

if youre playing smash on a serious enough level that you want to know stuff as technical as covered in this video, i recommend not using joycons at all
i think the estimations for the switch pro controller and for the joycon are comparable though
can i get one for sideways joycon?
mash as hard as you can, until it breaks. Then buy a gamecube controller 👍
mash the power button lol

Im brand new to smash and wanted the reassurance somebody can do really good with the pro controller. Thank you because now I don't have any excuses except to get better. I tried falco after watching some of your videos and I really like him. So hard for me to pick someone to learn when Im so new to all of this.
513Snipa oh right on. Yeah honestly becoming good at this game is really difficult. To become a high level player can take years tbh. Also falco is really hard to play at a high level and can be frustrating. He's fun but you might find more success playing someone like cloud, marth or inkling. Just my thought
