Underrated video, there’s so much content out there talking about all of these combos and 0-deaths, but hardly touching up on defense other than “learn how to parry”. Out of Shield options are some of the most important ones, and out of block options / block punishment is absolutely essential in any other fighting game. Been looking for a video like this, thanks. EDIT: I play Tekken 7 and combos aren’t nearly as important in that game as learning how to block punish off of a specific amount of frames from your opponent, even if it’s just a single jab. Megadethfist - I know this is an old comment. I just wanted to say that I agree with your statement! Defensive options are very under utilized by the average player. Have a good day
C Smash ikr majority of ult players just sit in sheild until they get hit by a safe move and start spamming grab only for their grab to get whiffed and them to go to twitter and complain about this game being bad just because they didn’t bother learning about their defensive options.
When your shield gets too low and your character's body is exposed, sometimes attacks can hit you. That can be where moving your shield can come in handy!
@@airgod231 no like you hold shield , then they hit you and it hits the shield, then somehow gets rid of the shield (not a shield shatter/break) then the move follows through and hits my character, WTF
Thank you so much for this video! I always try to shield grab to punish aerials because I’m so used to Smash 4 mechanics, and this is really good information. Keep up the awesome work, man.
I think it’s just very offputting because blocking a heavy attack in pretty much every single other smash game leaves them so open you can do almost anything you want back. In this game however if you block a heavy attack all that happens for a lot of the really strong ones is your shield gets crushed and that’s it
@@perkypears on the other hand it pushes characters to get the read on the opponent rather than getting a guaranteed punish. Safe on shield smash attacks are usually slow and predictable, you don't really need shield to counter it when jumping is, even though a bit risky, much more rewarding. In case you panic and stay on shield, you can still parry or spotdodge, by if you get scared and keep holding shield you won't feel unable to do anything like say, blocking fox's nair, but rather depend of a good read or just backing up and replanting your strategy
Yeah, i was kinda disappointed with that, but, the video is still pretty informative, nevertheless... Also, many players don't know the matchups against G&W
Only roll out of shield as a mixup. It’s more practical to full hop out of shield since all jump squats are frame 3, while all rolls are frame 4. Because of this, you can get outside of your opponent’s range at the same speed, with something less punishable, and more versatile

Thanks for the help, I’m not able to read my opponents in time when I shield, so I usually avoid it unless there is an easy parry or if they are throwing projectiles. And so far I have been doing good without it, but sometimes it is annoying to see people shield and you can’t do it.
I love the nerf to shields honestly it makes sense why in other fighting games blocking is so good bcuz you have such a small area and blocking highs lows reversals and reacting to grabs is hard but in smash you can block anything just by holding block no matter if it hits you high or low from front or behind as long as you have a full shield of course but still it was way too good for it’s own good it’s not fun when all someone does is block a whole match I get you can grab to punish people blocking too much but this is the only game that makes it incredibly easy to react to you can either roll jump spot dodge air dodge or drop shield and attack and it made grabs only tools you would use to mix up your opponent aside from there intended purpose. Finally smash caught on that if you’re blocking your in a disadvantage like in other fighting games if you blocking ultimately your just trying not to fall under the opponents pressure where in smash it was kind of a get out of jail free card adding the parry mechanic was a nice touch to reward players for reads or good reflexes widening the skill gap but also to make it so shielding isn’t a complete disadvantage.

DETHFIST pretty much 2D fighters like tekken mortal kombat killer instinct skull girls DBF Marvel vs Capcom etc, just blocking in those games is well balanced sometimes it’s even worst to block then to try and poke someone as opposed to in previous smash titles you could block everything and shield breaks and even shield pokes weren’t common now I can’t play even one match without either my shield breaking or breaking someone else’s shield it’s a nice change of pace especially sense most grabs could be read very easily and punished very hard for missing I just like the fact that shielding in ultimate means you’re at a disadvantage but in any other smash title you could shield and perfect shield everything making blocking just as good as being on the offensive, there’s a reason you have to block a certain way in other fighters yknow? You can’t just hold a button and keep people from hitting you, just my opinion tho but tekken has some devastating footsies that’s probably the only 2D fighter I struggle with.
NumberJuaan don’t worry man reddit is even bigger on explaining things like this most of the time. Is the best follow up for DK out of shield down tilt? I seem to be whiffing a lot of shield grabs or I get spotdodged on. D tilt is his fastest ground move at frame 6. Should I mix down tilt up with grounded up bs and down bs? Would love to hear input
DK doesn't have great options, but a neutral air can sometimes be okay, as well as a back air if you have your back to your opponent. Neutral air can also beat out a spot dodge as it lasts 16 frames.
So if you want to aerial out of shield, do you have to release and then press jump or can you press it while you hold the shield button? Cause I for example, like using the jump button + A for short hop aerials. Is that possible out of shield?
Yeah, that's what out of shield options are: options you can do while holding the shield button (releasing will incur the dropping shield frame penalty). So you hold shield, and (usually as your opponent is lagging from hitting the shield) you do your input. Jump + A will work. You then have to immediately input your direction if you want a foward/back air. The timing's a little tricky if you don't want to misinput a grab or a dodge roll.
Can you make a video on shield pressure, since it's kinda the same topic. Sometimes I hit my opponent's shield with an aerial and I cant beat their out of shield option, sometimes I use the same aerial, and it seems like I can jab/any fast option before they can do their fastest option out of shield.
I'm new to smash and just wanted to play as bayo but even cpu fighters can be hard for me. Like lvl 9 Mario just jumps around and dolwn air into my shield and I can't do much about it. Up b doesn't hit if opponent is behind bayo, aerial moves don't hit him if he is on the ground. What is a good option for her?
How do you shield after coming down from a jump? I see people landing and instantly shielding but when I try I get lag before my shield pops up. What gives?
i seriously just want to know how long you are stunned for when your shield is broken and does mashing reduce the amount. I think it's yes for the second question tho but how much can i t be reduced.
