if you like my work, please don't forget to subscribe to my channel. if you have any questions please leave a comment below.
Make sure you login your Microsoft account after finishing the installation.
The Windows should be activated by Microsoft and No watermark on desktop.
Thanks for watching!
if you have issues with the Bluetooth driver, please copy the Bluetooth driver to your steam deck's Micro SD card and run the InstallDriver.cmd from there. Do not run the Bluetooth driver from your USB Flash drive directly.
Here is the Joystick Cap I used on my Steam Deck:

Thank you for the excellent tutorial I liked and subscribed.
I love your picture.
Awesome tutorial, much easier than other tutorials I have been researching here on RUclips, thank you so much!!
No problem sir! 😄 enjoy your deck with windows from now. If you need more help please feel free to contact me.
such a clear well broken down tutorial thanks so much made it super easy some videos were doing extra steps and made it seem more confusing than needed to be
No problem. Thank you too ! 😊
Awesome walkthrough. Nice to see you actually do each step and not just fast forward through a bunch of stuff like some people do
thank you !😊
pressing space or pause is hard for you huh
😊
Bro thank you for not skipping steps and assuming we know everything. Legit the best SteamDeck tutorials channel
I just wanna say thank you very much for your short but powerful video! it really helped me alot and I finally have windows on my steam deck now!
Glad it helped!
Thank you a hundred times, without your video there is no way it would have worked, especially when installing the drivers...
Appreciated for the comment! Thank you too 😊
thank you for the tutorial, im glad you were able to show us every step of the way other than skipping it for us to figure out.
Np, I am glad to help you out. 😊
You make great guides - I installed windows with no problem at all following your guide. Thanks.
Excellent! Glad it helped 😊
I watched a few of your videos all are very helpful thank you. You have a new sub.
Everything works perfectly! Thanks a bunch! Liked and subbed!
Your tutorial videos are just amazing, the best by far in your field. Thank you very much
First thing I did after unboxing my Steam Deck was to follow this guide and have Windows installed on it! Thank you very much for this excellent guide!!
Thank you 😊
I got to do this. Thanks for the video
Thanks for the tutorial, it worked for me too.
Awesome, easy and quick. thanks a dozen
Thanks for this amazing tutorial 👍👍
Thank you for this! It worked perfectly.
Thank you don't forget subscribe to my Channel, I have more videos for Steam Deck.
Thanks for this demo. It worked following your clear instructions. So cool to have Steam OS, Linux and Windows on the same machine!
Thank you. I am glad to hear that I helped you out. I am making a new video to show how to make the steam deck controller works like xbox360 so we can run non steam games on with steam deck controller.
@@ED4T are you running w10 on a SD on just part of it or all the SD card?
i am running all win 10 on sd card. Most of time I play my deck with windows now.
@@ED4T I'm contemplating what to do personally, I was just gonna run Warzone and league of legends on w10 and use rest of HD for steam games for STEAM Os if possible even tho I used the SD for w10
@@ED4T I can't get the sound drivers to work for Windows 11. I've tried lots of different steps, but drivers will not install on Steam Deck. Might try Win 10, thanks
Thanks my friend, you're the man 😎
Thanks this was an excellent tutorial.
Thanks for the comment. Hope my video helps you out. Have a good day !
Thank you for this video! I wanted to chime in with my experience. I first tried following this method with Windows 11, but I did not get a free Windows license (I was asked to activate Windows after installing drivers). After restarting the process with Windows 10, the free license was given without any problems. So, I would recommend that everyone skip Windows 11 and simply stay with Windows 10 for the time being.
Thanks for this information. Yes windows 10 will get free license from Microsoft directly then you can upgrade to win 11 later on without paying for activation key too.
BTW, I like your profile pictures it's so cute.
thanks man !!! everything was easy and working fine !!!
You're welcome!
Excellent tutorial, thank you!
Thank you !
Great guide, thank you.
Not problem thank you ! 😊
Nice Tuto! Works for me! (y)
great info - thanks for posting !
Do you know how to dual boot on the built in drive on the SD or better to wait for official Valve support on this ?
Have to wait for Valve to release dual boot option.
Thanks for the helpful and straightforward video. Btw, how much space does windows 10 take up on the micro sd card after it has been formatted by rufus? I was wondering to add some games inside it after windows have completed installation on the deck.
thank you so much
Do you recommend w10 for steam deck?
Excellent video ! Thank you so much , this it’s the most throughout and easy to understand Tutorial video I found for this . Just have few questions, what happen if you take the sd card out ? Do you have to reinstall everything again? And when you enter window mode , can you still have access to the games and files downloaded in the steam deck’s ssd drive ? Or only you be able to access to the files in sd card ?
You can take the sd card out when your steam deck is not using windows. It does not hurt anything. Just plug back in if you need to run windows again. Once you get into windows you are not able to see decks internal SSD. Because windows cannot read Linux format SSD. so you only can access files on SD card
@@ED4T I see thank you so much !!! ❤️
@@ED4T This is very important info thank you very much, glad i bought a 512gb SD card haha
Thank you
Thank you, you are the real MVP
Thanks for the great comment. I have another video will be uploaded later today it will be benefit for window running on steam deck a lot. If you are interested stay tuned!
What is the micro SD card file system suppose to be?
BRO , WHEN I OPEN WINDOWS 10 IN MY STEAM DECK AFTER INSTALLING AMD APPLICATION AND RESTARTING TO WINDOWS , THEN ONE MASSAGE SHOWING AND MY WINDOWS NOT OPENING . MASSAG IS "PREPARING AUTOMATIC REPAIR" . my steamOS opening with no problems , but my winows 10 not opening in steam deck , showing massage (preparing automatic repair) .
HELP ME........
I have no idea what I am doing wrong. Followed pretty much all of your steps. And I get a "choose which partition to install windows on" during the setup, which shouldn't be appearing on Win10/Win11 setups. I think it might be related to choosing GPT partition on Rufus, but if I choose MBR, my SD-Card doesn't show up on boot menu of Steam Deck. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong here?
Edit: OMG. I am an idiot. Didn't pay attention to Windows to go option.
i guess you made it work. Congrats!
It looks like I need to purchase a code...It's probably like old windows where you get to try it and then limit the features and puts a watermark after it notify you the trial will expire.
I chose your link but the difference is that I installed on a 1tb ssd I replaced inside the Deck.
I did choose Windows 10 Pro after I chose to later put the key, on your screen you skip that part and doesn't show on ur video?
I also didn't use rufus since the download let me put it on usb? Does that matter?
If you follow my step there is no need to put the key. It does not require key the whole process. I believe you have to choose Rufus’s otherwise Microsoft cannot recognize you have a small screen device if you just use the normal way to install it.
Thank you for the guide. I don't have a USB dock or spare USB stick, you can however copy your drivers folder directly over to the SD card. Just wait for Rufus to create the card and then open it and copy the drivers across.
Yea, I was wondering why not do just do that...
can you switch back to game mode after installing windows on steam deck
wow, after destroying a USB drive by accident from other tutorials, I didnt realize how easy it was. Thank you sir! the step by step helped so much, especially for people who are not tech savvy. One question, how do you set up the keyboard? when I go into windows to type, no keyboard appears.
No problem sir ! You can call out the keyboard by switching windows to tablet mode . The tablet mode is available from bottom right comer of the task bar .
For people who installed W11.
Key lard you can turn on:
Settings/"on top 3 lines*/time and language/writing/touch keyboard/ check last one - it allow you to show keyboard if there is no connected any
Thanks for this information 😊
What about if I want to install Win10, do I need usb mouse and keyboard?
@@cristalreynoso8883 No. You can move mouse with joysticks or trackpad. LMB click is L2 button, as well work for DoubleClick. But if you want use windows often and don't want spend 100+€ for dock buy this adapter: USB Hub Hama 4x USB, 1x HDMI, 1x USBC
Thanks for the help ! 😊
@@mravec97 thanks for your reply, but what I mean is if need a usb keyboard to set up and install Windows for the first time
excellent walkthrough, very much appreciated. I will be taking these steps this week upon receipt of my steam deck! Any additional steps since posting this video we should be aware of?
Make sure you select home edition with windows 10. Some people claim they did not get free licenses with win11 or win10 pro. So stay with windows 10 home edition. Btw I think you would like do this settings on your deck after installing windows. Check my this video. It make the deck’s screen to a completely different level.

@@ED4T ended up going with the WIN 10 home download, everything went identical to your video. SMOOTH~! Will try installing my first win game, and let you know how it turns out!! Thank you!
Great to hear this. Is your win10 home activated ?
@@ED4T no just checked not activated. I used win 10 home iso
Can the Microsoft Store bei used to download and play the games? For full controller support steam must be installed ist that right?
install windows 1st then install SWICD. Steam is not mandatory. SWICD guide:ruclips.net/video/7UwZWohj8IA/видео.html
So, how exactly does storage for Windows work using this method? Does it just utilize the leftover space on the Micro SD for any programs or files?
Yes the windows will take about 50gb and all leftover space can be used for games and programs. I installed Horizon Zero Dawn after win10 installed on my 128gb SD Card. I believe I still have 15gb space left after that.
@@ED4T Can you install games on the internal SSD and run them on windows, or do games have to be installed on the Micro SD?
@@ahmedasfoor3890 Windows can not read the Linux drive that Steam OS uses, so no... Your games would need to be installed on the MicroSD.... Just make sure you get a good and fast one.

Thank you
How do I bring up the keyboard in windows? your guide worked perfectly btw :)
Thank you! on the right corner of the windows, you can put the windows into tablet mode. then you can touch the keyboard icon on the right corner of the screen to bring up the keyboard. hope this help u.
thank you 🙏
Yes I feel win 10 is more stable.

Hey man great tutorial! Is there any way I can use a cheap sd card to install windows, then buy a 512gb micro sd and use it for both steam os and windows? Does the sd csrd have to be in every time I boot windows?
Thank you! You can use A1 type sd card for windows That's what I am using now. But you cannot use one sd card for both steam os and windows. Windows cannot read Linux format sd card. Yes you need to have sd card in every time you boot into windows. BTW merry Christmas 🎅
if it's still relevant I just installed win11 with a samsung 850pro 512GB ssd in an external enclosure. I set it up and used it for an hour and installed the only app I needed which is a custom meta trader 4 app. steam deck replaced a dt replacement laptop with a 4790k and 980M. runs great so far as does linux and steam OS.
Thanks for this great information. 😊
Hi so does the 128gb bootable drive needs to remain plugged in? Think it needs to but can you install games on that drive just like a normal windows computer?
yes, if windows is installed on the 128gb bootable drive, it need to be plugged in and you can install games on that drive too.
The first audio drive install always causes a bluescreen for me on windows 11 pro. Every single other driver installed fine, but this means the Audio Icon has an X and I have no sound. Any fixes for this?
I don't suggest to install windows pro version on steam deck. The basic windows11 version is sill not stable at this moment. I prefer to install windows 10 on deck for now . Maybe sometime next year windows 11 will be more stable on deck but not right now.
Awesome video, one question though. When I download windows to the sd card, is all data on it lost?
when you download Windows onto your sd card, data will not lose. but after using Rufus, all your data on SD Card will be removed.
Would I do exactly the same for an external ssd as seen people mention windows running of sd card is not great
Should be same step as sd card.
Hi, can you made a video where you install Windows 10 into the internal SSD without a factory reset?
yeah thats one of my video idea. stay tuned!
Great video. Well detailed. is it better to install windows 10 on the micro SD card or the SSD? Can I still dual boot windows on the SSD? And which drive would be best to keep my games on? Any help is much appreciated 👍
for the long term, i would say it's better to install on an internal SSD. I will make a guide video and show how to install both steam os and small size windows on 64gb version steam deck. Also, it will support 1 SD card for both operating systems (windows and steam os) and yes we will be able to do dual boot from SSD.
@@ED4T thanks for the knowledgeable reply. Can't wait for the next video on the SSD for the install. 🔥
Instead of buying a USB hub, can the driver files be transferred to the Deck over wifi with an FTP client?
yeah you can do that. or you can get a USB c to usb adapter just use a normal usb flash drive.
Windows runs well off a high quality micro sd but the games need as much if not more tweaking than steam OS because they perceive the screen as the portrait resolution. Desktop apps work perfectly fine. One such game is metro exodus you can't change the resolution above 360p even in the cfg file and its portrait resolution.
Yeah few games need to tweak a little bit to get it work but you can play games that cannot be played on steam os.
Can you for example by 1 TB card install windows on half (500MB) of it. Then use the rest as storage in steam OS ??
Yes, you have use half size for windows and half use for steam os. It works
I installed Windows successfully but can't seem to get my usb-c hub to work properly to see my expansion drive, installed all drivers and checked to see if it the Hub was still working properly on steam OS desktop and it does. looked under device manager and it shows USBcontroller and PCI ENcryption/Decryption controller as not installed under Other devices. Can't reinstall either because it says there are no compatible drivers. Any fix to this? seeing code 28 next to them if that helps
Does your usb hub require power supply ? Have you try with a usb flash drive ? Will the usb flash drive be detected ?
@@ED4T it’s my sd card reader. I use it to transfer files from my expansion drive to my deck. My expansion drive has a usb 2.0 port but my sd card reader has those ports as well so I use it on there. It works %100 fine on regular steam OS desktop just not on windows on my deck. I’ll connect it then my expansion drives light turns on then off after a few seconds and can’t see it in my pc or in devices
How about the controls? Does it need to have a driver to make the steamdeck's controller work?
for controls use steam deck tool.

And just this...I was dying after installing Windows...I would never go back to Linux, there is no such money...now the freedom of installation is unlimited, whether it is about games, programs...etc... no obstacles, no torture...thank you God for this tutorial...and i confirmed...installing WINDOWS 10 HOME...no need a key, clean, simple, beautiful...
great to hear that. Is yours activated free by Microsoft? Some folks here said they have to buy a key. Mine is completely free and activated by Microsoft permanently.

X-Gen, do you recommended changing UMA Buffer ( 1 to 4 )...I not test it, by maybe helps with performance...what is your expirience with games ?
@@DinoSportsGaming I always put in 3. But I dont feel much difference
Do we have final version of steam OS who can allow us to dualboot ? Valve was on it , didnt check last update
Valve has not release official way to dual boot.
Great tutorial and it worked like a charm. However, I'm unable to play Warzone on my Steamdeck using Windows10 installed on my SD card.... Have you tried this? Is it due to the limitations of the sd card? Or is it something else?
It won’t start ? or you get any error message ? I don’t think it because of the limitation.
@@ED4T It starts the app and I can get to the menu screen but if I try to select a game option, I get a black screen (sometimes with menu music playing in the background, sometimes no music). But essentially, I have to restart my system and try again and every time I've tried I always end up with the black screen.
@@waycupcoffee6325 do you have this issue with other games on windows ?
I’m having this same problem except with Rainbow Six Siege. I can’t tell if the sd card simply isn’t capable or the files mid download became corrupted…
Can you install steam on the windows installation then try adding that game warzone as a non steam game and retry it see if that helps?
I'm wondering if the micro sd card used to boot windows can still be used under SteamOS as a regular storage space for steam games?
the SD card will not be readable under steam os because steam os is a linux based system it does not recognize windows format SD card.
Hope this helps your.
Can the SD cards be switched? So that one SD Card can bei used with steamos Games and the other with Windows and Windows Games?
Yes, you can have two sd card and one for steam os one for windows. That will work for sure.
How do I install Fortnite on steam deck if I have windows? Do I just go to the Fortnite website and hit download?
When downloading windows 11 on the steamdeck are u able to download free games i ask cuz i dont like the idea of buying games instead of them being free
you can get codex game or gog games. search google.
Can I store game files in the same micro sd that's used to boot up windows?
You can't. Linux can’t read the windows sd card .
@ED4T are u able to remove SD card after installation?
The windows will be installed on SD Card. if you dont want run windows you can remove the SD Card and then insert your normal Steam OS SD Card.
Hey i have a question can you use refind script with this?
sorry what did you mean refind script ?
I have window 10 on my steam deck Micro SD can I upgrade to window 11 on the steam deck or will it mess everything up ?
I never did that. But it will have very high chance that your driver will messed up. The win11 and win11 have different drivers.
will game perform the same as steam os when i install them from windows on my deck ?
Some games actually perform better on windows. It’s just another option for steam deck having windows on it. Especially it’s on SD card so no messing up with steam os.
Just a quick question... When you install like this, do you need to deal with any Windows activation ? Just installing Windows on to the deck would cause Windows activation to to go off after a few days...
ruclips.net/video/VHRKqrwXNqQ/видео.html. Check this video I showed more activation stuff on steam deck windows.
@@ED4T I followed your directions... Your directions didn't work. It required a key to activate it. I just went on eBay, $9.99 for a Windows 10 license key. All activated...
@@TheCoolDave lots of ppl did get free activation by following my direction. But it was proved the free license only available for windows 10 home edition.
Hello, can I still run steam deck os games on the sd card that has Windows on it? I only have the 64gb version. Also, can I play xbox game pass games on steam deck as I think I saw that there are controller driver issues. Thank you for your video.
Yes you can still run steam os games from the SD card that has windows installed. I have the 64gb version as well. You are right there is joystick driver issues on windows. The Xbox game pass is not working properly since valve never released joystick and buttons drivers that works with windows.
I will make another video soon and talking about the problems when steam deck is running windows.
Do yourself a favor, Pick up a 1tb 2230 M.2 drive and SWAP out that 64gb to a 1tb, trust me, it's like $150 and it would the best money spent on your Deck...
I will do the ssd swap soon that's a good idea.
@@ED4T Doing the swap itself takes like 15 min, it's easy. You just need to re-install SteamOS so backup what you want before doing it.
so when you use windows, the micro sd card must be in the steam deck? And is it possible to extract it when you go back to the steam oc?
Yes the SD card has to be inside of the steam deck if you are using windows. I think the best way to solve your concerns is to install the windows directly onto the steam deck internal SSD. But for ppl who only have 64gb internal storage is impossible to do that.
@@ED4T But if i download it to ssd could i use and windows and steam oc?
Yes, you can still switch between windows and steam os even it's installed on SSD.
@@ED4T thank you, you're video's are really helpful
Have you encountered problems such as dropping frames or battery consumption? in Windows
The battery life is slightly decreased compared to steam os. But gaming performance is almost same as steam os. Some games actually have better FPS on windows.
@@ED4T OK thanks
Just incase it happens to anyone else After you install everything and go to restart unplug any usb docks from the deck and then boot up I tried to reboot with my steam deck on a dock with a usb connected and it got stuck on a boot screen tuned the deck off unplugged everything and tried again and boots to windows fine no problems!!!
Thanks for those extra useful information. 👍
it won't let me create the ISO, once I'm in that step it displays a message saying I need to log in as an admin, do you know how to proceed?

What kind of administration is it asked you to log in ? Windows admin?
Thanks for the video i did this with my micro sd card 258gb would i have to do the same thing if i want to use a 1tb sd card or can i just copy paste 258gb card
You have to redo it again on your 258gb sd card. Those hidden files for windows system are not copyable.
Thanks for the reply i was wondering is it possible to run windows natively on its ssd would i move files from micro sd or how would that work
@@ryuzakiuchiha4706 yes you can install windows directly on your steam deck ssd but it kind of mix up with you steam os.
what different if you choose not the ISO when creating the windows installation pen drive
I did not get your msg. we need a windows image file(ISO format) to create the bootable flash drive.
I'd like to add that you can have Rufus download the windows iso for you.
How to switch it back to steam it's Get stuck on windows before i have options before it will boot the os 😕 Even after the sound is not working

put win10 into tablet mode. It’s on the right corner of the screen. The tablet mode will allow you to call out keyboard any time.
my wifi has an error code and for the sound when i left click it theres no install button
sorry, which step is your wifi not working? during the windows setup process?
Can the micro SD still be accessed after I install the windows on it?
it won’t. Steam os won’t read the windows partition

Try login your Microsoft account. If still not work you might need buy a license off eBay it’s $10.
Do i have to reformat my sdcard the i already have my stuff on it ? On put everything back on it?
You don’t have to format SD card separately. The Rufus software will automatically format it for you. It will format your SD card before copying windows files on it. Everything previously on your SD will be gone.
@ED4T oh okay so i need to do a backup on what i have in it. Thanks.
Yes if you have important stuff on your sd card. Remember to back up first. 😊
can i dual boot with a usb flash drive instead of microsd this same way?
Yes you can install windows on usb flash drive or SSD. It doesn’t matter works same way as SD card.
@@ED4T thank you
No problem 😊
But why lagging the Deck After you install Windows 10 ? For me i installed Windows 10 and it was perfect but then tomorow heavy lagging is there a trick?
it is caused by the SD card. get a A2 high-quality SD card. but for the long term I still suggest installing windows on internal storage.

it gets to 19 percent and slows to a halt. how did yours format so quickly?
its not my usb drive or my internet connection. none of the tutorials seem to work. when i choose standard installation, it works just fine and installs within half an hour. is there a reason i cant just use that instead?
Mine is slow too I just showed 8xspeed in the video. Don’t want to waste your time.

I haven’t try if you like win 11 I think should install win 11 directly.
I'm still trying to install Windows but it needs a key, on my 4th install.
Also, Windows to Go was discontinued in 2020 so you won't get any updates pass 2020 look it up.
@ALeX Z just follow my video tutorials and do the same step and You will get activated windows without key on your deck. Windows to go is still working fine. Check my RUclips community tab I posted my deck windows activation status and I am aslo eligible upgrade to windows 11 .
any way to control the fan curves?
Yes this is a tdp control software you can control the fan and cpu watts. I am working on the new video now. Will coming soon
what is the software?
What the difference between mbr gpt ?
GPT will require you have a disk lager than 2TB.
Does it have persistence?
It’s pretty stable I have it installed two months ago and I use my SD with windows most of time, it’s great !
Can I do the same and put it on external ssd?
Yes technically you can but make sure the ssd is always plugged in when you try boot to windows
@@ED4T thanks yeah it will be cause I attached a small Anker USB C Hub, PowerExpand 6-in-1 USB C PD Ethernet Hub to the back of the steam case. The hub is actually small enough and light enough that it does not get in the way or adds more weight to the steam deck.
