When I listen to Emppu's solo in this I hear the lyrics of the song Black Velvet.
"Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style"
I wonder whether that was deliberate, as the lyric is little boy's smile.

I really wish you would have done an analysis of the lyrics, as they are very deep and actually something a lot of artists ( all artists of every genre ) deal with on a daily basis...the feeling of no one understanding their work and how much it means to the artist! Just look at Toumas singing along with his song, and Emppu's solo....he isn't smiling at all.....his heart has been there before, and he understands the pain!

As soon as Floor started singing my eyes went all misty. And….Emppu’s guitar solo…the expression on his face when he finishes…not his usual smiling, happy visage. Maybe that demonstrates the power of this song….it even got to him.
For Tuomas ( The Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen: founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish.) himself this song means a lot.
He has said that this is the “mother of all Nightwish songs, about himself and how he wants people to remember him as when he passes away.
    He said:
”This is the most personal song I’ve ever written. My testimony for the whole world. With this song I want to apologise everyone who deserves my apology. It also makes an “I don’t care” -statement to them who deserve it. The song is also about what Nightwish means and has meant to me. It’s all, without it I’m dead. I have created it and it has created me.
When I pass away, this song’s lyrics are of what I wish to be remembered. An Ocean Soul.”

You analysed this track very well, observing elements in this song which I have missed. I have not heard this track for a long while, now having a refreshed listen to Floor's vocals. Also listening to the complexity and fulfilment of this track. What do I suggest next: Nightwish - Noise. It is a meaningful track, how we are addicted to mobile devices and how it is used. Then the live at Hellfest 2022 version is good. As you get a real feel for the instruments played. Other than that, if you like Marko Hietala's singing, you will like the new track: Exit Eden - Run! Released a few days ago. (Exit Eden is a project group of top vocalists from other Metal bands coming together).

Nina, you're one of my favorite reactors with great musical knowledge and a sweet heart.
In this one I would have loved to see you experience the impact of the song as an emotional story, adding your technical views a bit on the fly. It is one of those ❤ songs...
Instead the emotional connection got lost in technicalities after every tiny snippet of the song.
A bit of a pity in a top 5 Nightwish song.
A humble hint: if you find yourself in a very detaillist technical mindset, just insert a recap of the first, second chorus and following parts without interrupting, just experiencing the impact. We have lots of patience in this! 😊😊

I said the same! She is good with technal things, but she totally did not feel the song. It is so obvious Emppu and Tuomas are really emotional, with tears in his eyes. While metal is not one of my preferred genres I can still appreciate the outstanding quality of musicianship that Nightwish puts into their songs. I read somewhere that they are a symphonic metal band and I think that is a precise description of their work. It's like their songs have 3 to 5 movements in them like a symphony or concerto, with something for everyone to like and Floor's immaculate vocals are the icing on top. Speaking of musicianship Nina, listening with us and then playing it pretty much note-perfect amazes me and I am seriously impressed by your skills. Thanks for another top quality reaction.

You hit the nail on the head with this comment. It is not only how Floor sings a song it is also how she interrupts the song as well. Those little reflections she adds that make all of the difference. Like you said how she uses her arms and hands as well. It just draws you in and makes you feel safe and at home. This woman knows how to reach out and touch your soul. That is true talent and either you have it or you don't and Floor has it for sure.

I loved watching your reactions, but you are missing what I believe is the best, most captivating female voice on the planet. I think it is time for you to react to Dimash's fellow passenger on the spaceship that deposited them on this planet. Diana Ankudinova is a young (now 20) Russian singer who has the most unique, captivating, chill inducing voice. I suggest you get videos off her RUclips channel to reduce copyright strike issues. She has an amazing backstory, as she was abandoned at a train station at the age of 3 with a broken collarbone, placed in an orphanage, and was so traumatized that she could not speak. They noticed her singing to cartoons, and used singing as a form of voice therapy. I wont go to much into her voice, will let you discover that. She gained a huge following on the internet with her performances of Wicked Game (age 15), Rechenka (14), Human (15), Crow (18), Blizzard (15), but I would start with her performing the Elvis classic (in her own original way) "Can't Help Falling in Love" on a Russian voice competition against some of Russia's most famous singers when she had just turned 18 (hint: She won). She has begun to put out her own music in the last few years. Best of luck.

Thank you Nina, and ignore the naysayers. The reason most people come to your videos is because you ANALYSE what is going on, picking up on things that a lot of us miss, which gives us a new perspective. If I just wanted to hear the song uninterrupted, I would put on a DVD.

Nov. 7 is the great Joni Mitchell's 80th birthday. A legendary song writer with a beautiful and unique delivery, seems like a no brainer for someone in your field.

yeah, she is REACTING on songs (her title) and I find it very interesting to hear if a note is a C major (I play guitar, so I know) BUT Nightwish is about feelings and emotions and she did NOT feel a thing. Even cut the solo of Emppu, while Emppuis really emotional. Always laughing and pranking, but not on this song (or the Poet)
I want to see how people react on the song. Otherwise call it ANALYZING NW's Dead boy's poet. No, not great to behonest, but a nice face gives her 2K.

👍Hi Nina, nice and precise review of this song.Floor really gives this song the meaning it deserves and the band/guys are also as good as they ever could be.I hope their next album have some of these kind of songs, with epic builds up to the end .But well, maby that's a retorical question,in the case of Nightwish.😁🤘

So, as always this song is about Tuomas. Significant is that he wrote this at age 22(-ish), just after Nightwish spiraled out of control in popularity. This new god-like status he was assigned...he was not ready for it. It ended his youth and childhood innocence. He is mourning the fact the boy-Tuomas is gone forever. Also it is a predicament: He realizes he has not only defined Nightwish, but Nightwish now also defines him, which leaves him in a bit of a search for his own identity. On top of that the pressure to create new music even better that the last track is huge. Now that he is worshiped like a god, how will he find his true love in this messed up situation. But of course he feels he is not allowed to complain about the situation, since he is living his dream and got everything he wished for.

MORE NIGHTWISH! I realise you're not following Gabriels list, which you should've done from the start. So, since you're off the list a long time ago, I'm just going to recommend what I think you'd enjoy the most; Shoemaker (lyric music video, NOT a live version), Yours is an Empty Hope (there are 3 good live versions, people fight over the "correct" one), Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean, and of course Greatest Show on Earth - I recommend the one in UK but the one in Tampere is also good. In fact you probably want to see the other one just for yourself whichever one you pick.
There are of course a dozen others, but yeah. I'm not sure if you've checked out I Want my Tears Back? If not, it's extremely enjoyable and positive, but it's not very impressive vocally - until you learn that Floor was ill while performing the Buenos Aires recording.

IMHO, The list is a good resource, but not an absolute requirement to follow it in order. These are some good suggestions.

      @vogel2280 9 месяцев назад

I concur with the suggestions. But of course Gabriels list is not a mandatory thing. Any reactor can do as they please. However, there were some careful thoughts put into the order songs appear on the list. Lets make Gabriels list a kind suggestion on how to submerge yourself into Nightwish the best possible way.

ok I love this song, but this is better in Tarja s voice. How to put this, Tarja is singing it like a lover, with a dark rich passion and hoplesness, Floor is singing it like a sister, with empathy and sympathy. This is my take on it, ohc.
Really appreciate your reaction, it is very insightful.

Nina, I indeed like your analysis and music history and music technically you have really covered everything.
Everything? Yet I get the impression that, despite the explanation about the chosen type of music and singing style, you have missed the coherence of Tuomas and Floor's choices. The question: Why did people choose this or that musical technique? remains unanswered. That even the feeling, the choice of the color that the lighting will radiate, is part of the whole story. Everything to properly convey the meaning and emotion of the story to the audience. And the audience understood them. (of course everyone knows the song, the text and the context, but even without that) the interaction was there. That whole package of factors are so perfectly attuned to each other to strengthen the whole, which makes every Nightwish song so unique, and yet completely different from any song by any other talented artist, even though he/she sings with even more a great voice and accompanied by the most professional musicians.
So, also try to include the (historical meaning and/or) emotional value (many lyrics can be traced back to Tuoma's life history, major themes in nature, science, or human history) in your analysis and you will be perfect.
