Hello Havik [ Pauze & Rewind ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This music video is the 4th (and last) single released in advance from the band's 10th studio album, "Yesterwynde" (September 20, 2024), featuring Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band and Troy Donockley, multi instrumentalist and singer.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel: www.youtube.com/@gabriel.bardac/community

This song isn't typical of Nightwish, but then no two of their songs are alike. The composer of most of Nightwish's material is their keyboard player, Tuomas. This song is from their recent album "Yesterwynde" (rhymes with blind) which is considered to be the third part of a trilogy that covers just about everything from the evolution of life to man's place on this planet.

Nightwish is a Finnish band that has been around since 1996 . They released their first album before Evanescence released their first, so they've been around for a while. Floor Jansen (Dutch), who you saw here, is their third lead singer. The backing vocalist is Troy Donockley (English), their multi-instrumentalist.
Tumoas Holopainen, the band leader and composer, wrote this song on the passing of his father in 2021. It's a celebration of life song, so with that intent known, the imagery and lyrics will make much more sense. This song is atypical for Nightwish as they usually go harder and heavier.
Music reactors typically go for their live performances and many of these shows have become legendary. You'll get more than a few suggestions for Wacken Open Air 2013 songs. If you want to see a live performance where they go hard and heavy, I'd suggest the live compilation video of "Tribal". That song is lightyears away from "Lanternlight".
Floor Jansen is an exceptional singer with an unmatched vocal versatility. She can quite literally flip from an operatic head voice to a deep death growl in the span of a single note. "Tribal" will expose you to a different side of her voice.

I think you're gonna like this band. They are so damn good. You mentioned how you like stringed instruments and piano - most of their music incorporates actual orchestral and choral backing tracks. The lyrics - which you really paid attention to - tell a story in every song. Every one. Although it's impossible to pigeon-hole them to one single genre, at their heart they are a metal band but so much more. I've listened to a lot of different kinds of music in my years but nobody, literally nobody, holds a place in my heart like these guys do. Do yourself a favor, if nothing else, and listen to more of them. The army will be cheering you on every step of the way.

Nightwish is a band generally catagorized as symphonic metal. However, they tend to resist generalization and go where they want. The usual starting place for this band is the song "Ghost Love Score" live at Wacken 2013 - correct speed. That will give you a great idea of just what the lead singer, Floor Jansen, is capable of. Not to mention an introduction to a band that is made up of extremely talented musicians who all play for the song. Nightwish's music videos are wonderful, but they are a band best experienced live. There's just an extra vitality that goes into their live performances. I have subscribed in the hope that you will continue your Nightwish journey.

You can't summarize 28 years of Nightwish but the genre symphonic metal is a small snippet of what Nightwish is doing. They don't have boundaries. But every song has a story behind which is told by the lyrics, by the music and the way how it's presented. And Floor, the current singer is the medium to present it.
I highly suggest young Floor showing her skills with her previous band Revamp singing Disdain live at Graspop 2010. ruclips.net/video/iNSf64M9uA0/видео.htmlsi=SZaEU9vqSTGQKbyK

Greetings from Arkansas and Welcome to the Nightwish Army. I found Nightwish 6-7 years ago. They bring the best music I've found in 35 years. No two songs are alike, they change in mid-song. They make you think. They tell stories and fairytales. They're some of the best musicians I've seen in my 73 years. They are one of the few bands I've ever seen that are best live. I see Gabriel has responded to your post. He has alot of band info and a great set list to watch. The entire Wachen 2013 live concert is a great place to start for a new listener. When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after the iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on RUclips. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered RUclips in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turns 8 years next march) and Lucy (1 year this october),a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

Enjoyed your reaction! Welcome to the glorious world of Symphonic Metal, the beautiful mash up of symphonic composition, orchestral instruments, and heavy metal. Music and lyrics are mostly composed by their keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen and are very poetic and often vague as Tuomas like his listeners to interpret teh music for themselves. The lead singer is Floor Jansen, one of teh best female vocalists in our time. Her Tuomas are geniuses at creating emotion, often making me feel things against my will.
Final song from the final album of the trilogy of Endless Forms Most Beautiful, Human Nature, and Yesterwynde. All three albums focus on science, evolution, humanity, and our place in the universe. This song feels to me like someone saying goodbye to family and friends as their life comes to the end. Loads of beautiful imagery in the lyrics of seeing the end, of reminding those we love that we will always be present, of lamenting the unfinished things we leave behind (as is always the case), and then walking "to the trees". Since Tuomas is famous for writing lyrics for multiple interpretations I could also see this song where the narrator is death personified, much like the way the lyrics in Music on Human Nature personified music. A third way I see it is that the lyrics aren't necessarily about a person but are instead a metaphor for humanity and our walk through the eons of our existence which would fit well with the themes of the album trilogy. A number of references to Auri and other Nightwish songs. "I am in the light and flood" and " I am in the four winds" IMO are shout outs to the Auri songs Light and Flood and The Name of the Wind, very beautiful instrumental that have a similar feel. Auri is a side project of the composer Tuomas, his wife Johanna Kurkela, and the male singer you heard, Tory Donockley, that creates atmospheric, folky, celticy music. For me the line "I am you who climbed off your back" gives me Decades in the Sun vibes and of course "To the meadows I go" is tapping into the same symbolism and meaning as Meadows of Heaven. Heartachingly beautiful song and a perfect bookend to the album and trilogy.
Lore has that when Tuomas explained the lyrics and the meaning behind them Floor got super emotional and broke into tears. Floor has said it took several takes to record the song as she kept breaking into tears. If you look closely near the end of the video you can see Floor's eyes tearing up. I played this song for my 23 year old daughter and in the middle of the song she came over and hugged me so tight.
A beautiful tribute to Tuomas's father and all that are the lantern light for our journey through life. I agree with Tuomas, if we have lived a life of joy and meaning then we shouldn't be sad at the end but celebrate a life well lived. I think this song and Epica's Tides of Time will be the songs for my funeral when I pass.
Next song for you, Oceans of Strange Islands if you want something from there recent album that is more typical but Nightwish is best experienced live so I would go with Ghost Love Score from Wacken in 2013. A song where Floor really gets to show so many sides to her voice and you get to see her crowd interaction which is fantastic. One of the big 3 Nightwish songs (the other 2 are The Greatest Show on Earth and The Poet and The Pendulum) it will give you a great introduction to live Nightwish.

_This_ is Floor Jansen. Best damned voice on the planet: her ability to give you goosebumps (and/or bring tears to your eyes) is unmatched.
You're in for quite a ride if you start down the Nightwish rabbit hole. I won't add much to the pile of recommendations you're going to get - they're all great - but don't miss her non-Nightwish stuff: Covers of "Alone" and "Let It Go", a bit of opera ("O Mio Babbino Caro"), a duet ("Sancta Terra" with Simone Simons), and even some musical theater ("Phantom of the Opera" with Henk Poort.)

Only partway into your reaction but I’m already so excited because you’re really paying attention to and appreciating the lyrics. Nightwish’s music is very varied in terms of style and genre but the use of storytelling, poetry and lyrical depth in their songs is a consistent theme. I’m very much looking forward to your reactions to Nightwish moving forward because I can see you’ll be paying attention to the lyrics as well as the music and that’s something that I feel is especially important with Nightwish

Nightwish is a symphonic metal band. So this song is not typical for them. Try "Ghost Love Score" live at Wacken 2013 official live video. You will be amazed. I was at that show and it is in my top 3 live performances of my life. Alongside with Queen in 1986 and TOOL in 2019.

A beautiful song, but not a typical Nightwish song. Perhaps not the best introduction to the band to get a flavour of what they are really about. They are definitely best as a live band and their iconic performance at Waken 2013 is the best place to start. Perhaps the opener, A Dark Chest Of Wonders.

This is the softest, saddest of all the Nightwish songs I've heard. I only learned about them 5(ish) years ago, so long-time fans may correct me. It's their first song to make me cry.
They are incredibly versatile. No two songs are alike, yet they're always recognizable as Nightwish. Welcome to the Nightwish rabbithole. You're in for quite the journey.
The male voice that comes in later in the song is Troy Donahue, a multi-instrumentalist. Marko Hietala, their bass player until a couple of years ago, used to sing back-up and occasional lead, and I wasn't sure who would step into that role when he left, but Troy is doing a fine job.

The saddest? I think Poet and the Pendulum is sadder. That last part from his parents speaking to him. Lines like 'When did you become so cold?' and 'You have such oceans within' hit me every time.

Technically, Nightwish falls into the symphonic metal genre. More accurately, Nightwish Falls into the Nightwish genre. This is definitely a ballad, but it’s not easy to find two Nightwish songs that sound the same. You may not realize it, but you just listened to the Queen of metal herself, the Valkyrie goddess. Enjoy your journey!
Recommendation: The entire live Wacken 2013 concert. Beginning to end.

While you cannot go wrong with any song from their 2013 Wacken festival performance, I think most people would say the likely starting spot is " Ghost Love Score" from that concert. It too is a softer song of theirs as they can and do go heavier, but its another great introduction song to Nightwish! They have so so so many good songs, and so many of the videos are from LIVE performances, as this band is so talented!

    Great reaction Pause & Rewind😍
    -Here are the lyrics
    Nightwish - Lanternlight
Gone is the hurt, the wait
Gone is the warmth of day
A stray boat saved, happy memories engraved
    On into a velvety night
    Beneath a lanternlight
Last night brought the heaviest of snows
    Melting the songs of old
Tying the boat, write a new one soon
Sending me to the drowning moon
    Far above a lanternlight
I'm in the light and flood
    I'm in the four winds
I am the waves shaping pebbles flawless gems
I am the snow on your palm
    I am the secret stream
    Moss beneath your feet
I am you who climbed off of my back
    Not long ago
A sheltered song in a world now gone
    Petrichor
    The timeless
    Turn loose the swaying boat
    Meltwater, sound of spring
I hear our song now, sung by the free
    For a thousand more tomorrows
    Of an incomplete weave
    To the meadows I go
    I’ll be waiting for you
    Once upon a lanternlight
I walk now toward the trees
    I am the secret stream
The night falling at my feet
    Into the forest of Yesterwynde
    - And this is the actual message the writer/composer Tuomas Holopainen (Keyboard/piano), wants to portray through these lyrics. He wrote this track after his father passed away in 2021.

You probably started with the softest of Nightwish songs. It goes from a sad acceptance of loss/change, all the way to a warm hug of good memories. Nightwish is a band with a lot of talent and a lot of depth and intelligence. They are a symphonic metal band, but they also use influences of different genres. Like Celtic for instance.

This album Yesterwynde is like an old concept album by Pink Floyd, you might take the time to listen to it from the first song all thru to the last one. After about 50 times now it grew on me up to the 5 best albums I own - and I am 64 now and have about 8000 records. The last song -Lanternlight- is my personal song of the year 2024 by far. It is very, VERY different but exactly that is the reason. For me Nightwish has evolved to one of those rare bands, that create art without any consideration to what anybody expected or to say it the short way: Nightwish does Nightwish things.
And I predict this record will be recognized in decades, just like Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the moon. Some records last forever.
    Greetings from Germany

Greetings from New Zealand! Happy New Year! Once you've heard Nightwish, you'll never be the same again. While I appreciate and also like Evanescence, they are not on the same level as Floor (female singer) and Nightwish. The writing skills of the keyboardist Tuomas, (playing piano), is genius. He has been nicknamed the metal Mozart. The variation in their music is vast, and no two songs are the same.
There have been three singers in Nightwish their 20+ years, before the time of Evanescence, and they've all added something different to the band, but Floor Jansen is the most versatile, and the most expressive of them all. Her range, versatility, and expression is very, very impressive. They are all top musicians, and work very well together as a group, and they leave their egos at the door. They play for the love of music, which is as it should be. Gabriel has a comprehensive list which you can follow :)

For contrast, try "Yours is an Empty Hope", live from Wembley. Floor can sing anything...and frequently does.
Last night they had the inductions into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Which is a promotional joke. Nightwish has been turning out spectacular music for 30 years. Think they'd get in? Plenty of other (mostly non-U.S.) bands in the same situation.

Nightwish Army US Division here, I see Gabriel posted his welcome to the army, follow his list for the best symphonic metal band in the world. I`ve been a fan for over 15 years and still obsessed with them. Ghost Love Score live at Wacken festival 2013 is where most reactors start and highly recommend it although I prefer the Tampare concert in 2015. For more of the ``metal`` songs I recommend Weak Fantasy, Tribal, Slaying The Dreamer, Yours is an Empty Hope, Last Ride of the Day. Concerts you should watch are Wacken 2013 and 2018, Tampere 2015, Buenos Aires 2018, Wembley 2018, Hellfest 2022 , PinkPop 2022 and Deichbrand 2022. Floor Jansen in my opinion is the greatest female vocalist in the world as she can sing all music genre`s. Also check out her live concert in Amsterdam and you will see what I mean. Sorry for rambling on but I`m very passionate about this band !!
