Now you need to watch the performance in Tampere, Finland. It's outdoors and they pull out all the stops. This performance did have Dawkins, but otherwise was hindered in a lot of ways by Health and Safety. It WAS good to see Troy play a different instrument in the beginning.
Nina, There is a lot of music and real instruments in this song. Over 600 tracks in the mix. Backing music and instrumental sections arranged with and performed by the London Philharmonic Symphony led by Pip Williams, with real choirs in the mix also. All written by Tuomas. There are documentary videos about the creation of this album. With Harpsichord there were a number of musical references, musical evolutionary easter eggs, including a couple of famous classical melodies. Others will be able to say which ones. Of course the greatest show on Earth is the evolution of life on Earth.
There is a short documentary clip on RUclips interviewing Prof. Richard Dawkins immediately afterwards. He was a bit shell-shocked... It turned out that although he's spent decades speaking to large audiences, and sometimes having hostile debates in front of them, he'd never been to a huge rock concert before, and the sheer energy of the music plus the crowd was quite overwhelming to him. Dawkins' book about evolution, The Greatest Show on Earth, inspired Tuomas to write this suite and several other tracks on the album after Troy gave him a copy. The title of the album, Endless Forms Most Beautiful, comes from the Charles Darwin quote that Dawkins read at the end. The band sweated blood composing a letter to Dawkins asking him to read some quotes from the book for the album. The first time they got no response, so they sent a second letter, and purely by chance, it was read by one of Dawkins' assistants who happened to be a Nightwish fan, so he was able to reassure Dawkins that the band were serious and respectful, and not using him a 'gimmick'.
This is probably the greatest performance piece ever written. The fact that the band performed this with absolute perfection at such high energy levels for 22 minutes is just astounding. The sheer amount of calories expended by Kai alone would heat an Olympic sized swimming pool. The exhaustion is clearly written on all of their faces as they take a bow. The Greatest Show on Earth indeed.
Greetings from Poland, i'm also prefer Tampere live version over that one, Troy plays more and the vocals sounds way more stunningly. That was one unique evening for sure. Thank you, Finland, for a Nightwish.
@@ninaschofield The sound you heard and thought it was the cello was Troy using and e-bow on his guitar, a super sound. Please do more nightwish, Maybe Storytime from Wacken 2013 next??? You wont be disappointed. Thanyou for your reactions they are fab.
I listened to The Greatest Show On Earth for the very first time two months ago at Nightwish's concert at the very same location, Wembley, London. It was the last song on the set and it left me and my daughter (who went to a couple of Nightwish concert many years ago when she was a teenager and Tarja was the vocalist) with a strong feeling of having experienced something very special. I have seen / listened to the song many times after the live experience. Thanks for you great and detailed reaction to this song, which now is very special for me. I am currently introducing Nightwish to my granddaughter (7 years old) starting with Storytime.
That's when and where I saw this live, too, though I had watched videos quite a few times and listened to the album version over and over. Absolutely awesome.
Saw their concert in Toronto and managed to keep my cool the entire time and then the first notes of this song came on and I was immediately reduced to a puddle of tears

Hail to the Queen, the Poet, the Riff-maker, the Groove master, the Piper of Heaven and to the Beat Lord ! Had the chance to see them live last december, best show of my life.
Saw them in Birmingham last year - what a way to close the show. By far the best concert I've ever been to. Everyone screaming "we were here" together - an incredible experience. Thanks for your enjoyable and insightful reactions.
My wife and I saw NIGHTWISH last November at the NEC BIRMINGHAM And I have to say they were MAGNIFICENT BY FAR THE BEST concert we've seen by any band. OMG the drums ...........
In 25+ years of going to concerts, experiencing this song live ranks as one of the top 5 greatest live performances I've ever seen. Arguably number 1. You owe it to yourself to see them close a show with this at least once in your life, though it won't be the same without Marko.
They are playing a shorter version of the TGSOE in the current shows, and closing with Ad Astra, with Floor stepping up and singing the final soaring vocal lines (without lyrics) while the rest of the band lines up across the stage and stands at parade rest behind her. I saw them do this in Montreal May 2022. It really hits you hard. Triumphant ending to the show.
I agree 2000% Nightwish are a MUST in one's lifetime to go at least once to one of their live shows. Recordings are great but they convey so much more energy and emotions in their live performances
I have heard them play this song twice in concert, and it is without a doubt one of the best musical experiences. It may be a 24 minute song, but I will always say it never feels like it's anywhere near that long because of how it's composed and even the slower parts it still moves forward. It never gets bogged down or feels like a chore to listen to. It's hard to pin down a favorite spot in this song because it can change depending on my mood at the time, but one I have to mention is the part where Floor hit that G# followed by the A#/B flat. There's just something so absolutely haunting about that vocal line that just gets me every time. It's so primordial and sends chills up my spine. You should definitely go watch the performance of this from the Tampere show, though. That concert was outdoors and it featured some fireworks on top of the normal pyro happening on stage. But there's just something about the sun setting during the performance of this song that gives it a whole different atmosphere to the Wembley performance. This is without a doubt the magnum opus in Nightwish's repertoire to date. But who knows, maybe Tuomas will have another song to rival this one on the next album!
My favorite parts: 1: the piano (I'm a piano teacher) 2: Floor at the beginning with the operatic voice, her talking rhythmically and also where she does the atonal notes up high. Tuomus is just a genius!
Like many people over the last few years, I found Nightwish through Ghost Love Score on RUclips. But then I immediately found this song afterwards, and that's where I realised that my new favourite band were also a bunch of science geeks just like me. And that cemented their place at the top of my list of favourites.
I watched "The Greatest show on Earth" first time at Tampere 🇫🇮 in 2015. It was an amazing performance that you should watch on YT with all the fireworks at outdoor stadium. Keep rocking Nina 🤩🤘🤣
Keyboardist, Tuomas Holopainen is a genius how he put this track together. He definitely turned music into an experience. The track really hits you emotionally. Symphonic Metal is a fantastic musical genre. Thank you for your reaction. ( I will post a comment on one of your videos when Nightwish tour next in UK).
If I have to give my top 5 songs ever this would be on that. Despite the length it doesn't feel like a 20 minute song. This is so epic. Cheers! In your free time do watch the Tempere version of this song, you will not be disappointed.
@@ninaschofield Do so! Without spoiling too much, it's different on the production and on Troy's instrumentation. At Wembley he used an electric guitar with an e-bow, hence the cello like sound. At Tampere he uses other instruments and I'm not gonna tell you which...
Without doubt the Tempere version is more dramatic as it is outdoors - the only thing it lacks is the appearance of Dawkins. Incidentaly - the words he delivers at the end are not his but are the closing lines of Darwin's "On the Origin of Species"
Have seen them a few times. Closing with this song is an otherworldly experience. The heat of the venue, the instrumentation, screaming at the top of your lungs “we were here”. Truly breathtaking.
Happy New Year Nina, and in 2023, what a joy to see you back. Your music abilities and understanding of music in general, are first rate. I love your happy enthusiasm and sheer joy for this art form. Tuomas Holopainen is little short of a modern day musical genius, having formed the observations, crafted the lyrics and scored the music. Nightwish are unique in the idiom of modern music, and personally, have become treasured to me, every day. I wish you all the best, love and good wishes for all you will explore in 2023. Thank you Nina, you are a treasure, too !! 😊🤗❤
The evolution of music part is my favorite, though most people fail to recognize all the songs: chanting, Minuet in G, Toccata and Fugue, Enter Sandman, a techno beat. It's such a stroke of genius!
wow another crazy song, amazing production ,and floor I have to marry her, but you my dear Nina, wow very gorgeous , and smart make you even more attractive, tell me why are you not on that stage instead of Floor 😀😀
Another lovely reaction! Definitely Tuomas' Magnus Opus although I think All the Works of Nature Which Adorn the World really shows off Tuomas' compositional genius. It is a 30 minute orchestral piece that comprises the second disc of their latest album, Human Nature. There is a band approved music video put together by Sensei Music Videos that is the perfect accompaniment to the score. The Nightwish Army endlessly debates Wembley vs Tampere but they are both awesome productions and unique in their own way. I happen to lean towards Tampere. With it's outdoor stage, fireworks, different instrument used by Troy in the first part and Floor's outfit it just feels even more epic to me. Plus it is in front of the band's home crowd and Floor's parents were in attendance as well so they really put their all into it. Definitely worth a watch. A shortened version of this song is still the show closer on their current tour with Last Ride of the Day, Ghost Love Score, Greatest Show on Earth, and then the last movement of All the Works of Nature that Adorn the World, Ad Astra as the outro. When I saw them live last May I don't think I have ever left a concert more uplifted and excited to be living my life.
Hi Nina your reaction videos are the beat on you tube Saw Nightwish in Birmingham November 2022 and without doubt they are the best band i have ever heard or seen
The drumming was epic. It is a difficult story to follow with lots of changes. The whole story and it's sound is an epic production. This shows the true talent of nightwish. Great reaction Nina.
Sadly was not aware of Nightwish in 2015 and am totally gutted not to have seen this incredible concert. There are so many amazing songs including the definitive version of The Poet and the Pendulum, the third long masterpiece. Floor's performance of this is magnificent and so worth a reaction. Recommend the use of CCs. ruclips.net/video/N4Vfy5yCy-c/видео.html
Qiute a ride Nina! The vocals are pretty special. Imagine Floor performing this after a 90 minute set. You could hear a little fatigue in her voice when she asked the audience to sing along at the ending. Yet she powered right through to the ending. Loved it! Be well lovely lady. Thanks.
Wow, that was a reaction! Not only that you are talking about Floor's amazing vocals, no, you are giving the whole set, the music, lyrics, musicians and impressions the credit they all deserve. I really enjoyed watching this, thank you!
Thanks for your analysis! I have seen this recorded performance so many times yet it moves me every time. I love everything about it: composition, flawless execution, visual effects, and even the Bach (harpsichord) and Metallica (guitar riff) musical quotes. I think it is a masterpiece!
I had the privilege of seeing Nightwish last year at Wembley where they performed this masterpiece at the end. True to form, I was in tears then, as I am now. The lyrical masterpiece is only equal to the musicality and truly needs better recognition in the wider world. Great technical review & I can tell you truly love all music, can’t wait to see more.
"It's The Ultimate Celebration Of What Humanity Can Achieve". Wow Nina, what a line! I love you, that's excactly how I think about this masterpiece myself. Cheers :)
Great reaction Nina - one of my favourite things about this song (apart from the amazing arrangement and subject matter) is that Tuomas pushes his keyboard more to the front than in the vast majority of NW songs - and as always I enjoyed watching you pick parts out on the piano yourself :) I have a strange suggestion for a vocal coach, but as you connect with Tuomas' musicality, arrangement and thoughtfulness about the world I recommend "All the works of nature which adorn the world" - ruclips.net/video/RnOdQ5WNZJk/видео.html It's largely classical instrumental with a small amount of spoken word + choir, and a little of Floor - it's potentially too long for a reaction, but even for your own enjoyment I highly suggest you check it out. Cheers from Manchester
Others have done reactions of this piece, it's only a few minutes longer (yes, longer) than The Greatest Show on Earth. And I know I personally would love to see her reaction and hear her insights.
Along with many others who are commenting here, I also had the amazing experience and good fortune of seeing this performed live (sans Richard Dawkins). And along with others, I will say that this was in my top 1 or 2 concert experiences of all time (about 200 live shows). I had watched videos of the performance dozens of times and went in with very high expectations, but until Floor and the band are 30 feet from you and are performing this, you are simply not prepared. It exceeded expectations by all measures.
Yeah ... you think you're prepared by all the YT videos .... no, you're not. Just what depresses me a little bit is, it's damn hard to focus on someone else in the band than Floor, because Floor's stage presence is really not human anymore.
and this is the last epic song, after almost 2 hours of show, and then this high level of singing is simply phenomenal. I think very few can imitate this🤟🏻🤟🏻🎶🎶
Great reaction, thank you 😃👏🏻 Fantastic performance of what must be an incredibly difficult song to play. It really shows off their musicianship. And floor? 🤯 as always 😃🤘🏻
"Gets me a little bit emotional" - for me, a lot of Nightwish songs turn on the water works at some point. Record holder is How's the heart (acoustic), starting to tear up after about 20s...
I've personally always preffered the Tampere version, Troy starts out on his Irish whistles then switches to his Ulaen pipes for the intro and they have fireworks going off above the stadium for the big hits.
Great reaction, as usual from you Nina. I've seen this piece twice, in 2015 and 3 monthes ago, in oct. 2022. It' a celebration of life, in the biological sense of the word. A celebration of the evolution that brought us here, today. I've watch numerous reaction and analysis to this and your is one of my favorite because of your aanalysis of the composition and the arrangement, your ability to distinguish the different layers of the music and how they add to each other to create the song as we hear it. I really hope to hear more Nightwish analysis from you and I especially look forward to see your take on The Poet and the Pendulum (but for that, you will need to do some research before, I'm sure others have already told you about how important it is to know what the song is about, read the letters, etc.)
Hi Nina great reaction a young gentleman taking RUclips by storm is (ren -hi ren) this video has had 3 million views in 2 weeks and it is pure genius love and respect from the UK 👍👍👍👍👍👍🌟😀😀 amazing channel 👍
Please, consider reacting to TUOMAS HOLOPAINEN - A LIFETIME OF ADVENTURE from his 2014 solo album, inspired by 'The Life and Times of Scrooge', the graphic novel by Don Rosa. Don Rosa is on the video drawing. Beautiful delicate vocals Vocals by Johanna Kurkela, Tuomas' wife. The album was recorded in London with an orchestra. I have the feeling you might like this one! Interesting and funny backround info: Holopainen and Rosa interviewed by Radio Nova parts 1&2. Only 5 munutes altogether.
I have a daughter, 7 years old who likes this stuff like hell, if I put this on the television plugged in to the stereo (a proper hi-fi stereo with hi-end speakers) she is in awe, watching and listening so intensely….. Hope she becomes the person she is, a musical addictive child, full of color.
I got to see them on back-to-back nights in the U.S. last summer, and each night was amazing. I took one of my friends who's a classical violinist to one of the shows and she was blown away by this song. They had the same energy each night in notably different venues (capacity, acoustics, etc.). They're just a really great band in terms of professionalism, talent, and musicianship.
The history of our known universe wrapped into one epic song, an impossible task it seems.. but not for Tuomas.. how his mind works at a different level, will always amaze me. With such an impressive repertoire that Nightwish has, i personally count this song as their magnum opus because it has everything in it that makes this band such a force in music. And Richard's spoken word is perfect for this song too, his tone of voice makes the story element even greater to me. This is one of those songs that get better with each listen and you will find new sounds and details for a long time as well, it's such a detailed song.
Well done, Nina...just subscribed and now just wanna let ya know, it's so fine to watch 'a' reactor, who really shares together with 'us', the extremely and unreachanable heights and also the physical and emotional, mental experiences with that best band ever to ever have seen the light on this beautiful planet.
wow, how can you not feel emotional about this masterpiece, surely Floor is not human, if she is an alien I would marry here anyway, these guys in Nightwish just show you the raw talent that they possess in creating such a master piece of music, forget your punk, grunge, hip hop and rap, this sort of rock is right up there baby, good review my dear Nina, you really nailed it .
This song is so darn cool...and there are plenty of "tributes" woven into the song from other bands. There are a few places where Emppu weaves a bit of "Pantera" into song, and my favorite is when Emppu and I am pretty sure Marco joins him with a tribute to Metallica, with the intro to "Enter Sandman" ( which you really need to react to, along with one of my favorites, Nothing Else Matters" ). Kai really gets a woman long on the drums in this song!!! The ending of the song is amazing....brings tears to my eyes every time! You should also react to the title song of this album, "Endless Forms Most Beautiful.". There is a live version and a lyrics video version...which I personally prefer...mainly because I find it more entertaining. Thank you...for your time and obvious passion for music! My passion is painting those " Endless Forms Most Beautiful!"
Another great reaction. The guitar section at the beginning is Troy playing his guitar with the Ebow. I was there seeing this. Not this actual performance, but same venue Wembley in November last year. Unforgettable. The blend if voices is still there with Floor and Troy.
I heard the song live last December in Düsseldorf (Germany). No Dawkins present, but the song and concert ended this song with the song Ad Astra from the album Human II Nature. A very special end to a magnificent song
Absolutely great breakdown and you brought out a lot of things that are new from the other probably 150 reactions to this song I've watched. I enjoy you commenting on the patterns and replaying them. I know you were not wanting an hour long video, so didn't pause and break down every note and that's perfectly fine. Please don't pay attention to the nasty comments your will be receiving from some of the narrow-minded, hardcore Nightwish fans who demand the exact style of reaction that they want... they've caused quite a few reactors to completely not react to Nighwish anymore. They don't realize that their ignorance is actually hurting the band and turning people away. Keep doing your exact style and dont change a thing! 11/10 ❤
Hi, you should do "all the works of nature that adorn the world" that one is a classical piece from Nightwish (Tuomas), that is the second disk on there album "Human. :II: Nature". Just fantastic (even for me who is a metal head).
It's a marvelous song, I would say if you are rewatching, try the live in Tampere version, it's more of a grand performance in a larger venue, it does add something else to an already great performance
The good thing is that you have chosen the version that I like. The bad thing is that you talked about the whole video on top of the song. From bad to worse it is better to pause.
To hear Marco and Floor, may I suggest 3 songs not yet in your Nightwish playlist. Song of Myself from Wacken and Seven Days to the Wolves and Poet and the Pendulum from this same Wembley performance.
Seen Nightwish live at Dusseldorf on 1st Dec 2022, and my favourite part was from Noise to Ad Astra, my wife and I were the last to leave the stadium :)

Many bads have songwriters. ..but Nightwish has a true COMPOSER !!
You should do a reaction to the version of this recorded at Tampere as a comparison
Does make you want one cry out, doesn't it?
WE - WERE - HERE
I cannot think of a MORE profound performance!!! SPEACHLESS! Thank you for sharing, Nina!!!
It’s amazing! Absolutely I’ll make sure to watch the Tampere version 🫶🏻
"We were here." They're talking of the extinction of humanity. We WERE here.
😊🤗❤
What a lovely comment, thank you Paul and a Happy New Year to you! 🎉
The evolution of music part is my favorite, though most people fail to recognize all the songs: chanting, Minuet in G, Toccata and Fugue, Enter Sandman, a techno beat. It's such a stroke of genius!
Nightwish
wow another crazy song, amazing production ,and floor I have to marry her, but you my dear Nina, wow very gorgeous , and smart make you even more attractive, tell me why are you not on that stage instead of Floor 😀😀
And now I'm crying at work.such an emotional ride, and easily one of my top 5 songs from any band.
I was at this show, I remember feeling so happy afterwards, it was a great evening.
Oh wow!
I am sooooo jealous! 🥰
Thank you for watching!
Hi Nina your reaction videos are the beat on you tube
Saw Nightwish in Birmingham November 2022 and without doubt they are the best band i have ever heard or seen
Aw thanks so much! I bet that was an incredible concert!
I doubt that Darwin could imagine that his words would ever be recited to tens of thousands of cheering people.
The drumming was epic. It is a difficult story to follow with lots of changes. The whole story and it's sound is an epic production. This shows the true talent of nightwish. Great reaction Nina.
Great reaction. I've seen many, but appreciate the insight of your experience. Also appreciate the quality of your audio, thank you.
Floor: Enter LUCA
Marco: Enter Ionia
Emppu: Enter Sandman
Thanks.
I wasn’t there then, but I was there a couple of months ago and they don’t disappoint.
Wow, that was a reaction!
Not only that you are talking about Floor's amazing vocals, no, you are giving the whole set, the music, lyrics, musicians and impressions the credit they all deserve.
I really enjoyed watching this, thank you!
I’m so pleased you enjoyed it so much, thank you for your lovely comment! 🥰
Thanks for your analysis! I have seen this recorded performance so many times yet it moves me every time. I love everything about it: composition, flawless execution, visual effects, and even the Bach (harpsichord) and Metallica (guitar riff) musical quotes. I think it is a masterpiece!
Thank you for watching!
I was there and it truly was the greatest show on earth!
always unbelievable watching this song. It's perfection. it's gorgeous. It always makes me cry. it's THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH
Cheers :)
Got to see this live last year and it was incredible. Every band finishes a live show with a twenty minute plus masterpiece , right?😂
I have booked my ticket for Nightwish in Athens in June 7th, I love the band and wonder how they will cope with the heat in Greece
Heh they have toured a lot in South America. They will be just fine.
Great reaction Nina - one of my favourite things about this song (apart from the amazing arrangement and subject matter) is that Tuomas pushes his keyboard more to the front than in the vast majority of NW songs - and as always I enjoyed watching you pick parts out on the piano yourself :)
I have a strange suggestion for a vocal coach, but as you connect with Tuomas' musicality, arrangement and thoughtfulness about the world I recommend "All the works of nature which adorn the world" - ruclips.net/video/RnOdQ5WNZJk/видео.html
It's largely classical instrumental with a small amount of spoken word + choir, and a little of Floor - it's potentially too long for a reaction, but even for your own enjoyment I highly suggest you check it out. Cheers from Manchester
Thanks so much for watching and for your thoughtful suggestion!
Most bands have a songwriter...
Nightwish has a COMPOSER !
Saw this 2 nights in a row in November wembley then Birmingham - not a bad way to spend 2 evenings ❤
and this is the last epic song, after almost 2 hours of show, and then this high level of singing is simply phenomenal. I think very few can imitate this🤟🏻🤟🏻🎶🎶
And after all that "All the Works of Nature..." finale! it took me days to recover, was like a week of hangover!
Great reaction, thank you 😃👏🏻
Fantastic performance of what must be an incredibly difficult song to play. It really shows off their musicianship. And floor? 🤯 as always 😃🤘🏻
Thank you so much for your kind comment!
I only watch Nightwish (with Floor) reactions now
Marko and Floor singing together was magical. I rewatched this reaction. Such a joy because you are passionate AND knowledgeable
"Gets me a little bit emotional" - for me, a lot of Nightwish songs turn on the water works at some point. Record holder is How's the heart (acoustic), starting to tear up after about 20s...
It's not only The Greatest Show on Earth, it's The Greatest Song on Earth!
I finally got to see them in Birmingham and when they played this... I just soaked it all in and now it's my favourite song of all time
I've personally always preffered the Tampere version, Troy starts out on his Irish whistles then switches to his Ulaen pipes for the intro and they have fireworks going off above the stadium for the big hits.
Troy was playing the guitar with an E-bow in beginning before he changed to the Uilleann pipes
Saw them perform this last year in Birmingham and it was truly The Greatest Show On Earth
You can't see, but I've got tears, just from the way that went "POW"
Interesting and funny backround info: Holopainen and Rosa interviewed by Radio Nova
parts 1&2.
Troy was singing whole thru the song more or less together with Floor and Marco.☺
I've watch Nightwish in the Rock in Rio, it was AMAZING!!!
Thank you. Loved your comments. Nightwish amazing band .
saw them in december 2022 in Vienna. mind blowing and the chanting of "we were here" was a goosebump expierence with joyfull tears.
16:01 "Imagine being there, seeing this!" From those of us who were there. It was astonishing
I expect this reaction will get over a million views, eventually. Mostly because it's an excellent analysis of a truly epic piece of music. Chapeau!
I saw this in Birmingham last year and without doubt it is, in my 61 years , the best concert I have ever been to
The history of our known universe wrapped into one epic song, an impossible task it seems.. but not for Tuomas.. how his mind works at a different level, will always amaze me.
Well done, Nina...just subscribed and now just wanna let ya know, it's so fine to watch 'a' reactor, who really shares together with 'us', the extremely and unreachanable heights and also the physical and emotional, mental experiences with that best band ever to ever have seen the light on this beautiful planet.
indeed, watch again and again,, after so may time, i still tear up,, the fastest 20 minutes ever..
wow, how can you not feel emotional about this masterpiece, surely Floor is not human, if she is an alien I would marry here anyway, these guys in Nightwish just show you the raw talent that they possess in creating such a master piece of music, forget your punk, grunge, hip hop and rap, this sort of rock is right up there baby, good review my dear Nina, you really nailed it .
Birmingham in November , took my Son for his first proper concert ........ Amazing
Pure genius in composition and a marvelous piece of music in every way.
And ending is a "Hero's Journey" for me.
I am always sad when i revisit a video and i can't thumbs up again!
Saw them live in Antwerp and Amsterdam last November. Greatest shows of my live.
This is one of their greatest masterpieces
best Ode to Humanity ever. Reacted to by a wonderful human being :)
