I've seen some DaVinci models but never picked one up. Seeing the clock put together and working, yeah I'm going to take a real good look at what's out there. Thanks for sharing and good work on the clock.

Yes, very useful and glad to have found a good demo, thank you.
What I'm really after is a scaled up version that will run for at least 12 hours, but with both hour and minute hands and made in wood and wall hung.

+Gaius Coleman ,, Why Thank You Sir,, I started making one out of wood but then got myself into more projects than I could handle ,, some day I`ll finish it and put a video on it ,, thanks again for tuning in ,,I appreciate it !!

Oh you're welcome, Mike. If you ever build a Foliot escapement one, with Roman numerals, hour and minute hand and wall hung and can run for at least 12 hours I'd love to buy one from you - say $500 tops?! I'll need to try and source the Flying Pendulum one too now as I like that idea too!
      Best.

Just got done putting mine together, and I have to say I'm rather impressed with this little kit.
I will say it's a little tricky to get it to run slow enough so as to be reasonably accurate, say plus or minus 30 mins of the accurate time, yet still fast enough so it doesn't stall out from friction in the gear train before you run out of string on the weight running the whole show.
However, that being said, considering how inexpensive this kit is compared with buying a "real" clock of the same design, I think it works really well, and looks amazing even when sitting still, although it is a true delight to watch (and listen) to it run and see how the mechanism works. Plus you get the satisfaction of knowing you built it with your own two hands.
I'd recommend this to anybody who would like to learn how clocks worked before the digital age, or for retro-tech enthusiasts like myself who are looking for a mechanical clock that they can build themselves for not a lot of money (I must say, it looks rather splendid ticking away above the gramophone I built).
    Cheers,
    Brendan O.

I am so glad you like it, I`v loved clocks my whole life for some odd reason considering I have absolutely no concept of what time it ever is, I`v been disabled to work for quite some time (years) and I`v had insomnia since I was just a pea, I`m lucky to get 2 hours a day so time is really irrelevant to me, so to widdle away the hours I do models.
I went to a model car convention and this stood out like a sore thumb, and it was sitting next to the time traveler, when I asked the guy how much he wanted for the two he laughed and asked if I was serious, he said he`s had the two for years and couldn`t sell either of them so I said I`d give him 10 dollars and he said give me 5 and we had a deal, lol,, I got them home and ripped into the clock and was amazed at how well it was built, I think it took me about an hour to clean it up and put it together and played with it to get the time as close as I could for at least 3 hours , adding coins ,playin with the arms , it was a lot of fun I thought and also thought it to be a really great way to teach kids how it worked but also ,like you said have the puffed out chest of achievement and saying "look what I built" ,I just wish I had grandchildren to share things like this , besides it just might help them get there heads and hands away from there phones for a couple hours, lol, thanks again for checkin it out and glad to hear you figured out a small part of Da Vinci's code he,he,,

Well, you certainly got a better deal than I did, but all the same I'm still rather chuffed with the clock. A tad disappointed that it only tells time in minutes instead of hours like the original clocks it's based on, but oh well, I guess I can get a little chalkboard or something and tick off the hours next to it if I want to. I'm also considering getting a longer string and seeing if I can get the clock to run longer, right now about 15 minutes is all I can get out of it in the wall-mounted configuration, maybe a little more tinkering will yield 30 minutes to maybe an hour before I have to crank 'er back up again. Hopefully as the gear train wears in from running things'll get smoother and easier too....
Like you, I've had a love for clocks all my life even though I tend to run a little late at times, and I happen to love putting together kits and tinkering with mechanical things, also have a lot of time on my hands, so stuff like this is always a pleasure.
I wouldn't say I've broken any of Da Vinci's codes, but I do think working on something like this gives you an idea of just how smart and ahead of his time the man was, I mean the fellow had drawings of a glider that actually flew when somebody built one following said drawings, noticed how blood flows in swirling patterns inside our veins and other things about the body we're only just now rediscovering for ourselves...I could go on and on, but yeah, Da Vinci was a clever bloke and he never ceases to amaze!

Shipwright1918 I just went on google and found all kinds of sites for DaVinci model kits, most of them in the $20.00 range, it sounds as you know your stuff about the man, I`v been interested in him since I was a boy , him and Nostradamus, well anyone with the balls to atleast try to figure out what makes the earth tick, , now lets see about making that clock tick for an hour,, you figure the string is about a foot long to make 15 minutes so hanging it up you`d need about 4 feet ,,right? if I`m not mistaken didn`t they give you a extra gear to slow it down or speed it up ? another model that I have and can't wait to build is the Nautilus from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,, I have to get a little bit better with the airbrush first ,, but I would like to get another DaVinci kit , thanks for the chat,, I`m used to talking about cars all night, this is a nice change of pace

    • @Shipwright1918

The extra gear in the kit is for changing the ratio of how the clock measures time, being a 4:1 ratio gear which yields 1 full revolution of the minute hand per 4 revolutions of the second hand. I opted to put the regular 60:1 ratio gear in, which yields 60 minutes for the minute hand to go all the way around, as per modern clocks.
As for the string, I figured I'd go for some sewing thread if I want to go for the full hour mark, since the math equates to about 7 feet of string to get an hour's worth of run time out of the weight I've currently got in the little tray. With the sewing thread, I could perhaps get it all into the reel without clogging up the movement, although I might settle for using ordinary string like what's already in it and going for something around the 30-40 minute mark.
Right now, there's 60cm of string to yield my 15 min run time in the clock, so if I doubled that to 120 cm, roughly 4 feet in the Queen's English, that'd double the time to 30 minutes, maybe a little more if I keep playing with the weight distribution of the tray and the settings for the weights regulating the escapement gear.
So you've got a kit of the Nautilus? A great book (especially if you can find an unabridged version), and the Disney film adaption is a classic. As for me in the model department, I'm working on a little pocket-sized kit of the USS Enterprise (CV-6) aircraft carrier from Revell that I bought along with my clock, not quite sure if I have all the different shades of grey for the WWII camouflage she had on her at the time, usually don't do military ships all too much. One I'm really after is a decent model of the RMS Queen Mary to put together, she's one of my favorites along with the Titanic.
You're welcome, by the by, happy to chat a bit myself!

Shipwright1918 Wow the Queen Mary, I just watched a whole documentary on the ship, fascinating bit of history she holds behind her, the fastest ship in the Royal Fleet, never been attacked or hit on because she was so fast, still to modern boats her size she is faster, close to 800,000 passengers crossed the sea without any worry , I started building a wooden boat about 5 years ago and being made of mostly balsa it got destroyed while moving , my father in-law however was the finest man in the land when it came to building wooden ships, gigantic works of art that would take him 2 to 3 years a piece to build, just beautiful , and boy oh boy did he have a workshop, every tool you could imagine for doing scale modeling, I`v never done a submarine before and after being "new" once again to model building (I`v done them since I was a kid but sex drugs and rock `n` roll put it on hold) I focus on cars because I was a mechanic for 40 years (and can`t do anything else now) but like to adventure out a bit so I`ll do monster figures and some off the wall stuff , I`m sitting here watching paint dry on the Tom McEwen "Mongoose" funny car that I`m building , I`m guessing your from the U.K. ? how`s the weather ? lol,,

add more weight and adjust the distance the balls that are on the end of the escapement either out (slower) or in (faster) to get it to keep the correct time.

I have the same issue, if I move the "arms" on top myself, the mechanism works, but they don't seem to move on their own, they stop after one swing when I move them. If I pull on the string with the weight it doesn't do anything either :(
