  • When you first get a new CNC router, it is important to make sure it is set up right. You want to run a break-in cycle to make sure everything is settled in. Otherwise, there may be some parts that are not tightened down properly.
    This video shows you how to set up your CNC router to break your new CNC router in, and how to write the gcode to do it. this video is beginner CNC router owners. This is the first step of CNC router maintenance
    In case you are wondering what is g code, this video will show you how to write gcode for your CNC router to run this cycle.
    Once you run a breakin cycle, you will find that some things need to be tightened or adjusted.
    This video was shot with the Longmill CNC router

    Received my LongMill MK2, built the table and assembled the LongMill. Now what is my next move? This video explained the next move exactly. THANK YOU! I haven't seen anyone else recommend or discuss a break-in process for a new CNC. I guess the pros figure we should already know this information. You take us through the steps of "best practices" in a way we can understand the why and how. You even covered writing a g-code program. Took the mystery out of it. Great video Garrett & excellent advice. I always run a 'break-in' cycle or 'break-in' period on tool / machine I get, whether it be a kit, built from scratch, or ready-made. I also do periodic maintenance on all my tools & machines. Other than replacing parts, due to wear & tear, I have never had a problem with any of them. Some of them are pushing 40 years old and still going strong

    Thanks Garrett, and boy did it prove out. I have the Longmill have spent time getting it setup, issue with squares causing the gantry to to come off the the lead screw, thought i bent it but happy to say I did not. After I got that straightened out and ran a few jogs around you video for the break in came out. Well I am glade I ran it. You have like 102 passes and on the 101st the coupler came loose on the left y access. Yikes lead screw popped off and gantry started to get out of align. Wow at the very end of the test! So I have it back connected and am going to run another one. Thank you for getting this gcode out there it found an issue for me. I think I will build myself a check list for each run and for sure use this break in every so often

    Great info. Looking to eventually purchase a Longmill, but I currently have a foxalien 4040xe. It's a decent machine but cheaply built. One of the most crucial things I've started doing is periodically measuring vibration with my phone sitting on the router during a test cycle (I'm an NVH guy). Doing this periodically provides an opportunity for performance trends to be developed and ensure my machine is running as consistently as possible. Wish I would have done this when I first got it.. but live and learn!

    Hi Garret, the problem with oiling the parts is that over time the sawdust hardens, creating micro grooves, both in the linear guides and in the threads. And with that, it generates more clearance, that's why sawing with oil and grease don't mix. Another point is that as soon as sawdust is added to the oil, it quickly disappears due to its absorption. The ideal is to put graphite powder and rub everything with your hand. the lubrication will last much longer and will even avoid creating gaps.

    • @IDCWoodcraft
      @IDCWoodcraft  Год назад +1

      Eduardo, that is a great tip. A dry graphite powder would work great.

    Great video Garrett! Just found your channel (and subscribed). I have a LongMill on order and was wondering if you had a video on how to square up the gantries so that the plane of movement of the two Y rails is parallel and the X is perpendicular to it. I don't trust that measuring between the mounting holes on the supports would be accurate enough. Thanks!

    • @IDCWoodcraft

    Good idea. I wrote one for my CNC plasma but haven't done one for my OneFinity. Something new on the to-do list :-)
    One last step though, would be once you've run this, you should go back and check all the nuts and bolts for tightness, the X and Y rails for square and the Z for perpindicularity (new word I just made up). That way if moving everything around a lot has loosened anything and caused things to get out of square you'll catch it and be able to address it before cutting for real.

    • @IDCWoodcraft
      @IDCWoodcraft  2 года назад

      Hey Jim. I'm glad you're going to do that gor your router. It can definitely make a difference. Did you find anything after you ran it for your plasma?

    • @jimhatch5873
      @jimhatch5873 2 года назад +1

      @@IDCWoodcraft I did find a place where it was binding the first time I ran it on my plasma table. Also where one of the cables was setup too short. There were a couple of screws I tightened but don't know if I hadn't tightened them enough when I assembled it or if they were loosened from the torch head being driven all over the table. I don't do a lot of full table cuts with the plasma (it's 4ft wide) so I haven't noticed any issues since I went through the burn-in routine.

    It's good to dry run a machine around close to it's travel limits. We often do that in industry. We call therm warm up programs. It lubricates the ways, lead screws and other moving parts. It also helps keep rust off of critical areas.
    With routers, it seems obvious they would benefit from doing the same thing. A "warm up" program is easy to write once you know the G code for your machine. You can even use a program you created for a piece that is pushing the limits of your machine travel. Just don't put any material on the machine.
    I also noticed you put some oil on the lead screws. Lubrication on moving pieces is always a good idea for smooth operation and to reduce corrosion in areas of the machine travel you don't often go to. Running your warm up program occasionally will keep all areas lubricated and clean.
    Next Wave Automation recommends I use Dupont Teflon Silicone Lubricant on my Shark. It's a dry lubricant. Well, unfortunately that seems to have been discontinued by Dupont. Now they recommend CRC 3-36 Dry Film Lube. I can see benefits to dry lube of this type as dust won't stick to or mix with it like it would with a wet lube.
    I don't know what Long Mill or other brands of machines recommend for lubricants. That is probably a good thing to know.

    • @IDCWoodcraft

    • @jimhatch5873
      @jimhatch5873 2 года назад +2

      It's counting steps. Every move from the original 0,0,0 is calculated by the controller based on the revolutions of the screws. By counting the revs & calculating the distance moved by rev the machine always knows where it is once you've homed it (& the power stays on). The controller translates the G-Code positions into number of revs (or steps) the motor needs to turn to get the center of the spindle to that position. Then it turns that number and the spindle rides along the screw to the place you wanted it to go.

    How bad is it to hard stop the machine? I did it a couple of times setting it up by accident.

      @IDCWoodcraft  Месяц назад

      leestringer, Hard-stopping the machine can cause damage to the tooling, spoil the workpiece, and even harm the machine itself. It's essential to always let the machine come to a complete stop on its own to prevent any issues. Be careful with future setups to avoid this issue brother!

      @@IDCWoodcraft Oh boy, that's depressing. I hope I haven't ruined my machine before I cut my first board.
      I'm surprised limit switches aren't mandatory if it's so easy to do this. I'm not experienced so I really didn't know the difference.

      Kevin, my apologies brother. I transferred everything to a new website. I will work on getting that link fixed on my end. The Gcode is in the description. Did you try and copy paste that? You might have an issue with a typo when you entered it manually.
