Spindle Upgrade... You MUST Add A Pause (dwell) Command! [CNC Router]

  • If you have found the best spindle for your CNC router for a spindle upgrade, one thing that must be done is adding dwell to your post processor. In this video, I upgraded my Longmill MK2 from the Makita trim router to a spindle by a company called Pawn CNC (PwnCNC).
When you upgrade your CNC router to a spindle, you must add a brief pause (dwell) in the G-code program to allow the spindle to reach its RPM. Without this pause, the spindle can start a cut before it is fully up to speed, which can break router bits or damage your project material.
In this tutorial, I explain how to modify your post processor to automatically insert a dwell command when the g-code is written. It will insert the command immediately after the ‘spindle-on’ command (M3). This ensures your CNC router waits for the spindle to speed up before commencing the cut.
Using Vectric design software as our demonstration platform, I'll guide you step-by-step on how to locate and edit your post-processor file to include the G04 dwell command, which is the g-code that initiates the dwell. For those not using Vectric, the principle remains the same: find your post-processor file in your directory and apply these adjustments accordingly.
The dwell command (G04), followed by "P" and a numerical value without a decimal point, specifies the pause length in seconds.
What the dwell command line should look like → G04P5
This command will pause the CNC router for 5 seconds
Upgrade your CNC router to a PwnCNC spindle kit → link.idcwoodcraft.com/rll7p6
NOTE: It is recommended to upgrade benchtop CNC routers to the 65mm unit, not the 80mm unit

Great video, Garrett. I upgraded to Version 12 this week. This is what I found in the file when I opened post-processor commands. "M3[S]"
"M0(MSG, Click 'Continue' when the spindle is up to speed)". Original series: Onefinity Woodworker. I'm in the process of installing the PWNCNC plug-and-play in the spindle system.

With the g code that I have used in the past, "G4 P5" would dwell the machine for one-half of a second. For a dwell of 5 seconds, we would use "G4 P5000". Thanks for the heads up!

Thank you! I love as you learn things, you are so excited to pass that knowledge down to us.
My Avid CNC is in milli-secs, so I had to Pause/Dwell for P5000. I quick reference showed X5 was for seconds, but that did not work for me, so I will stay with milli-secs. This video also showed me how to automatically start my dust collection by adding an M7 before the spindle start and dwell. This also gives the dust collection time to get up to speed. The other outlet is controlled by M8 so I could connect something else like a light. There was an M9 already at the end of the G-code to turn the outlets off.
Note this does not replace the initial spindle warmup cycle, which I personally need to be more vigilant about doing.

Another advantage to having a spindle, if you have the PWM setup, is you can control the speed through the gcode. So if you have the database, it will set the speed automatically and not have to worry about turning it down on the router. Now I have my trim router connected with a solid state relay to turn on with the M3 command.

This is a very nice video and good information. One thing to note is that I am using Mach4 with the Ethernet Smoothstepper. For this setup the G04P command needs to be in milliseconds rather than in seconds. For me the "P5" would have to be input as "P5000".

When I bought my router, it came with Vectric V Carve Pro. When I started the program it moved instantly. Then when I upgraded to Vectric Aspire, when I started the program, I noticed there was a pause of several seconds.before the axes moved. Didn't know why, didn't care. it worked fine. Giving the spindle time to get up to speed seems like the most sensible reason.

Cool. I have to ask about 2 specific longmill (actually scienci) features in gsender. They have a delay after spindle on setting in setup and they allow inserting gcode before every job. I get that doing it in vectric probably touches more followers, but wouldn’t doing it in gsender make my past jobs adopt the delay also?
Any idea what the pause value is in the gsender pause feature? I read documentation and can’t find it, I know I can copy your gcode settings for the run before method.
