First, what brings Costa Rica to mind? Why do people choose to live in Costa Rica. This from the Tico Times-
International Living names Costa Rica as best retirement destination in 2021
"International Living, a United States-based publication specializing in - you guessed it - living internationally, named Costa Rica as the world’s best place to retire in 2021.
Costa Rica ranks first on International Living’s list, which also names Panama, Mexico, Colombia and Ecuador in a Latin America-heavy top-10.
Why Costa Rica? According to Kathleen Evans, International Living’s Costa Rica correspondent, the Central American country “attracts millions of visitors and foreign residents throughout the year with its tropical climate; lower cost of living; friendly locals; affordable medical care; vast real estate options; and, of course, its natural beauty.”
“One of the things you hear often from expats is how warm and welcoming the Ticos are,” Evans writes. “You will also find engaging international communities of expats who will help you through the process of acclimation.”
It is articles (advertisements really) that help put Costa Rica on everyones radar, especially retirees. Who doesn't like affordable health care, great weather, real estate options, friendly people and all that natural beauty Costa Rica has to offer?

Great Video Mike! Costa Rica isn't cheap if you want to live like a Gringo.... and it ain't easy to live there for the same reason!
If you adjust your lifestyle, your attitude, and your expectations you'll do fine! It's an entirely different culture. It's worth it if you get all of that straight in your mind before making the jump!
Unhappy disgruntled people will find a way to remain that way no matter where they live. Those "jumping" to the greener grass are not usually successful in finding happiness.
One disagreement.... medical care in CR is good.... BUT if faced with a serious life threatening illness or injury.... medical care in the US is head and shoulders above CR and much more available and timely.

I spent a semester abroad in San Jose and lived with a local Tico family. I agree with pretty much everything you say in this video. There is so much bad information out there about Costa Rica-including lots of videos on RUclips that are connected to tourism, real estate, or other business interests of the expat community.
Generally the happiest and best adjusted American expats that we encountered lived in the Central Valley, they learned Spanish, and they lived modest lifestyles based on needs more so than wants.
Many American expats go down there with unrealistic expectations. They live in expensive beach communities, drive a new car, frequently eat out at expensive restaurants, and then complain about the cost of living. 99% of Ticos do not live like that.

He's correct, I just come back from CR, had a beautiful time for a month, but I couldn't live there. There just isn't enough "FEEL GOOD FACTOR" for me. In addition to that, you really have to learn how to speak Spanish if you want to live in CR to really enjoy it. I was very impressed with the police presence in San Jose, they really work hard to make everyone feel safe. I wouldn't be on the streets after 8pm though. There is a lot of poverty and eventually you would be subject to things.

i think you need to do a video on what things are cheaper in CR. Things that come to mind: rent, real estate costs, property taxes, CR fast food (i.e., sodas) are 50% cheaper than the US; electrical rates are actually way cheaper than the US depending on your state; healthcare; cosmetic healthcare/dentistry; pool/landscape/home cleaning services; vehicle maintenance, etc. Tons of examples of areas where CR is significantly less expensive vs the US.

Hmmm ! I am native from Costa Rica but reside 50 miles west of Chicago.
My whole family is in Costa Rica 🇨🇷
The houses there have metal iron bars on the windows and also the doors, I am not talking about a bad neighborhood, this is the standard life style. If you want to go for the weekend , you better find someone to house sit or they will brake into your house and even take the toilets and sink!
My brother keep the cars in the garage with metal garage doors or you may just wake up to find your car is gone in the morning.
If you stop at a restaurant... need to park the car in front of restaurant so you can keep an eye 👁 on it while you eat!
My mother not longer travel in bus after dark because the 3 blocks she have to walk can turn into a dangerous asalto a mano armada!
I love my jungle there but living scared is not way to live for me!
I feel safe where I live in the US .
Try to buy a beef roast there to cook for my mom and family! Does not even exist in the standard supermarket, and if you find it, the price
I have no bars in my home, the cars park outside are mostly not lock and I can go for late night walks alone . I enjoy night I even forgot to close the garage door ... oops! Cold
That would had last in C.R. 5 minutes if that ...
The C. R. country rural areas are much better but to live there in peace ... build you a bamboo house with a clay wood stove and live with nothing of value $ .

Let’s be honest ... that would not be a girlfriend, that would probably be a young girl (18 years old ) or so in extreme poverty having sex with an old gringo man ( 70 +) just to have a roof over her head and a little food .
Sick, how these old retired men go there and take advantage of the situation of these girls and their poverty.

Or is your comment based on the old 1970s TV shows of police chasing bad guys?
The bad side of the CITY , as all cities have one is where the gangs ( ghetto) folks shoot each other. Obviously you half read my comment. I am in a very nice new development 50 miles west of the city, I can see the corn plantation from my home and still be in the city if I have to in 45 minutes.
Yes, it is still safe here!
When I visit CR ... I don’t even wear my watch ... you have to walk there with “ total awareness “ keep your money in your “ boobs” and being scared all the time is not fun for me.

I've been watching so many videos of people who come to live there and truly give daily accounts of their life, I'm so glad to find your channel and enjoy it. I came here with my online job almost 6 years ago and for a good part of my day that means I'm just simply in a different location. I don't aspire to built a house here, a business or drive a car. My only contact with the bureaucracy is crossing borders. I have rented a little furnished house and could just leave the country forever anytime I want. I like it here. I have no reason not to like it. I didn't come with expectations of paradise although having no winter here and all that lush nature is just wonderful. I don't know what other expats are coming here for. I for myself could less and less stand my home country and what's becoming of it (Germany) and knew I just had to be somewhere else. I liked Finland and Spain just as much before I came here (well no, I liked Finland more than Spain and prefer Costa Rica over Spain). I'm here on a travel visa which means I gotta leave every 90 days. I then travel for 4 weeks, be it through Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Peru etc. etc. Sometimes I take a vacation, sometimes I just keep working online. I'm seeing so many new places thanks to that 90 days limit, I don't know if would travel that much without it. The past 6 years have been the most interesting in my life and Costa Rica is a great base to keep exploring and a nice comfortable home too. What else do you need?

The people who wrongly blame Costa Rica are doing possible visitors a disservice by scaring them away and the Costa Rican people who might benefit from a stronger economy . Hi Michael. Thank you for the information you provide to those of us who are seriously considering moving to Costa Rica. I appreciate your candor and honestly as it relates to being an expat (As a veteran I hate that term). But that's my issue not anyone elses. Long story short, I've been planning to move to Costa Rica since January 2020. I made plans to visit in March and April of last year but Covid changed all that as it did for everyone. I finally had the opportunity to visit in November when they opened up to all citizens of the U.S. As a veteran I've traveled many places throughout the world and I read brochures and watch videos and I take the information with a grain of salt. However the 2 weeks I spent in Costa Rica literally exceeded my expectations. I've spent a lot of time in Panama when their was an American military presence, but Costa Rica exceeds in my opinion the quality of life and cost of living. I know I'm getting longer winded than I want to but I've been to Costa Rica 4 times since November, I'm financially able to support myself, I've spent time in La Fortuna and I've realized that it's a wonderful place I would like to live. I'm a person who usually likes to figure things out myself, however as I've gotten older I appreciate capitalizing off of the experience and knowledge of others. You and Mytanfeet are the"Others." I'm moving to CR in August. I love La Fortuna and I love Grecia. La Fortuna has a wonderful climate and view. I would love to get your perspective on housing and transportation. Thanks for all you do.

Speaking as a Canadian senior who is looking for an inexpensive place to spend winters, I AM NOT LOOKING for a place filled with "expats". I want an authentic experience immersed in a foreign culture. I only got a few minutes into your video and I understand why Americans are loathed in so many countries around the world.0

Loved it Michael. You don’t give these info talks for it’s production values, it’s a “direct to you” conversation.
It’s not just moving to Costa Rica people blame for not liking where they moved to. How many people have decided to move for what ever reason, to another city, state or province within their own country because they thought it would be so much better than where they were, and found it wasn’t their cup of tea. Do your research, then do it again! What do you want, and what do you need?

Loved it. You're so right about the whys. There are only 3 reasons why people move - Politics, Economy, or Systemic Crime. If someone moves for any reason other than that, it is simply that they don't want to live there anymore.

Costa Rica has excellent affordable healthcare. I had all my prescriptions filled on vacation there with a quick doctor visit presenting my US Rx and filled a 6 month supply for 50% the cost. All name brand meds as well.

Yes. I would agree - misbudgeting. Huge. (Living an american lifestyle abroad). Travel does not fit into a $1000 month budget. Travel for border runs, sightseeing or for personal matters abroad - it adds up quickly. Unknown costs such as repeated and endless car repairs are a big budget buster. Learning the ropes in a different country can be costly.

I was surprise that many B&B are open and some have few windows, there are parts of the home that don't have a roof, it's an open space so if criminals want to get in they can. I saw locks and doors but a small child could get in without a key, it's the nature of living in CR, open space.

Just returned from Tamarindo for 8 days. It
Was nice. The grocery stores had all the brands and better meat and produce than US. A great gym in town. Beans and rice and grilled fish, 5:45 chicken and beef better and cheaper than US. (That’s all I eat) Eating out was reasonable. Rather grill at home but ok. Same as San Diego basically without the bullshit prices and California horrific drug and homeless culture. I’m liquidating 25 years of SoCal wealth and investing modestly in Tamarindo. I’ve built my wealth and now don’t need much.
