- On April 8 2024 (ie today - as of the making of this episode) , all Nintendo Network online services for the Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS will be shut down, but it does not mean you don't need to stop playing online games. This is all thanks to Pretendo - the community developed Nintendo Network online replacement which is free and open source for everyone to enjoy. All you need is a hacked 3ds or WiiU and about 30 minutes of your time to get set up. In today's episode we take a closer look at the Pretendo service and its features. Please Enjoy!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I'll still never forget that group of people playing Halo 2 on OG Xbox Live past the cutoff date as long as possible to keep it online.
I LOVE INSIGNIAAA
Then we have insignia, which like how pretendo keeps 3ds and Wii U online, insignia is a project that revives OG Xbox live
@maddox121 it could though as the Nintendo Network probably only handles matchmaking.
@@CathrineMacNiel Where did you get that idea?
@@googleuser4720 I get that idea from the impression that mostly everything is handled via P2P. And when I look at the code of the mk7 secure server and see how uhm simple it is, it kinda reinforces my impression.
This is less of a "goodbye", and more of a "see you later". Thanks to Pretendo, online play will continue, even if it takes a while.

How stupid do you need to be to still play 3ds games lmao
I mean ya if you get a gathering online ..but who's playing these games online still is more curious

God bless the open source community for these projects, these guys are heroes and deserve all the praise.
It's just a shame that not every game or feature carries over
It's the only way to fight an all digital future.
These the last free console servers that the world will ever see. Sure, they were subject to some Nintendo online jank from time to time but unlike any other console servers before, during, or after, the 3DS and Wii U really had a community feel about them.
PS3, PS Vita are still online. I think 360 is as well.

Speaking of 3DS, you should cover the new virtual boy emulator for 3ds that came out a few weeks ago! Almost all games are playable in full 3d. Very awesome stuff (and a missed opportunity for nintendo with this console I think)
I think all of them are playable in the latest update. They fixed the crashing issue with T & E Soft games.
They already covered this in a different video on their channel.
You know I never thought of putting those 2 together, why didn't Nintendo consider that? What better opportunity?
@@winlover37 Because Nintendo is dumb.
Wow, that's awesome. I tried r3dragon back in the day, and it was pretty broken. I'm excited to give Red Viper a try. Small thing, but it'd be neat to have home menu forwarders for those individual games
This is why I Hate all Digital Future of Game as service 😢
"If buying isn't owning than Pirating isn't stealing" seems so true.
No copyrights, then it never dies.
Abolish copyright laws
Maybe emulating isn’t stealing, I would agree with that. I think where it becomes theft is if you sell a loaded console or handheld for a premium price.
They need to Change the laws. As soon as there is no official way to buy a product (digital store closed and physical production stopped) or service like NSO, then it is completely legal to get those games. That, ofc, would mean, as soon as they re-release a game, you would have a timeframe for like a week to remove the game from any device.
@@Adeyum64I believe since Nintendo has completely abandoned the 3ds and the wiiu, it’s legal in the US to download and play the games some other way. I remember hearing that discussion when EA took the Sims 2? off of the EA store and people saying it was legal to download the game elsewhere because in the US it was considered “abandoned software”. Japan’s copyright laws are complete dogshit though so I have a strong feeling that argument can’t legally be applied to Nintendo
RIP 3Ds & Wii U era, you will be missed
it certainly was the most fun era.
Nintendo has never felt the same after the Wii u and Satoru Iwata era. It just seems so sterile now. They still put out a few games I enjoy every now and then, but it definitely feels like something is missing.
An ending is just a new beginning. RIP 3DS & Wii U era, welcome 3DS & Wii U homebrew era: owned by the fans.
@@Jdogg4089I think I know what is missing for you: Maybe the effort Nintendo put in their operating system (I mostly felt that w the Wii U). For example, music for every part of the system and DIFFERENT music for Wiiu gamepad and TV. Also a thing missing is , that they aren’t trying many new things out nowadays(not hardware wise but more on the software side)- like the miiverse or street pass -Not available on the switch . The social aspect in general - you could even video call sb with a Wii U system or write sth to another user with a 3ds . That were just a few things I liked about the Wii U and 3DS and it’s sad to see that these systems are now abandoned by Nintendo …
Iwata era
Hoping Pretendo are working on getting the Pokemon games online again and even enabling Mystery Gift again in the future
omg love your pfp btw :3
Functioning online would be cool.
You don’t need it for events tho because PKSM has the vast majority of them.
Damn, then I could finally check out the online building left in Jubilife City or so 🥴
After seeing BD/SP, being able to obtain all events in Emeral, Platinum and HG/SS would be the actual Peak Pokémon experience for me.
Pretendo would be wise to not touch Pokemon. Pokemon is a huge moneymaker for Nintendo and they’re really touchy right now because of Palworld’s phenomenal success
Yeah and surprise trades
I finally managed to home brew my 3ds like 2 weeks ago and ever since its like i’ve reconnected with my inner child. I cant stop using it now and im glad that the modding will allow me to enjoy it for many more years

@@jordytruck860 lol that’s a double coincidence
@@VirtualKnight64 why?
For the true Nintendo experience, can Pretendo also send me a fake cease and desist letter when I try and play emulated games online?
unfortunately pretendo is not a greedy sack of garbage, so no :(
Did you received one from nintendo?
Fun fact: Pretendo comes from the Nicktoon Doug, in an episode where he wins a free Pretendo and becomes addicted to playing a single game.
And that game was Wing Commander!
I remember it from the old Muppet Babies.
As a note: while Pretendo does have progress being made for various game servers, they've stated that currently they're working on using all the network dumps they've gotten to analyze and archive the server structures.
One thing you didn't mention: Pokémon Bank, Poké Transporter, system software updates, game updates and redownloads of owned software WILL STILL WORK.
It almost feels like being set free. No longer in the clutches of the people that left us behind, but how long before those people start sending out cease and desist?
So true! I’m already back on Mario Kart 7. Lots of people on tonight!
This is freaking amazing. I haven’t used my Wii U in years but this community effort alone is going to get me to plug it back in and check this out.
I'll never forget the pain of having Socom US Navy Seals for the PS2 go down. It was my first online game that I experienced going offline.
You can still play it with third party servers
@@ThePolicenautI don’t think people are gonna be playing that

@@ThePolicenaut I know and I have but I don't care for the outdated jank, nor do I care for scam projects that go no where like Task force or HHour. This is great! I really think there should be some sort of legal requirement when sunsetting services like this that a makes it possible to run a local or community version, especially for paid products. Obviously there are security concerns and I'm not suggesting they should be legally required to release their code, but there must be some inbetween.
I think that you'd be a fan of Ross Scott. I've been a fan of him for years but he's now putting legal pressure to make sunsetting online sensibly a requirement, like allowing customers to make personal servers again as a standard feature
I was more or less going to comment the same thing, they should make their code open source if they don't intend to use it anyway nor continuing the service.
If they don't want to pay for those servers anymore, let someone else do it ? Instead of just shutting it down completely.
@@pbe6965forcing a Japanese company to release their code isn't happening. Would have to go a different route.

"Pretendo" is an amazing name. Kudos to whichever member of the dev team came up with it!
I'm never going to make use of this, but I still think it's cool. Pity it needed to be done in the first place. If we required all source code and data used for servers be released into the public domain upon shutdown, there would be no need for such efforts in order to preserve gaming for the future.

As much as Nintendo wants the 3DS & Wii U to die, the fans have kept and will continue keeping them alive. I love what this community has done to preserve some of my favorite games on my favorite consoles!
Nintendo fans give what Nintendo takes away
modders again doing what nintendon’t
They betray the oldest loyalest fan base just to cater for the new fans who joined over the damn Covid 19 quarantine , with updates and new games. But we can’t just get the servers up. Even without the game store working😔 I’m sure they lost a lot of people with this
Fans were the ones who wanted the 3DS to die as soon as the Switch came out...
To paraphrase your pinned tweet, the modding community fixed it. This is great to see. Love these kinds of projects.
Such an awesome video at a pivotal time not only for the community but me personally. Lately I have been looking at getting retro consoles and games from yesteryear to arm myself for the digital future. I want to hunt through my local Facebook marketplace for people's 3DS' , Wii U's and Wii's and games. I'm not new to the idea of emulation but I am new to doing the emulation myself (hacking a console ready for emu). Thanks for including the links for the guides MVG. I'll refer back to this vid once I get the consoles. I'm so glad these games and services are being preserved.
Thank you for this video! I'm so happy to hear that once again our online community has done something so amazing. I'm very thankful to everyone who made Pretendo possible and to you for sharing this guide for everyone!
this feels like the halo 2 situation. i didn't get to have my "one last game" before it ended so im glad i found this, i can keep going.
It must be stressful for the pretendo developers to have this much pressure now that they're the only option and not an alternative
Amazing, I'm constantly in awe with community initiatives to preserve these old online experiences such as this one. It's heartwarming really.
This is amazing, the homebrew community for Nintendo systems have been absolutely on fire since the Wii.
I think this will set a precedent in widespread adoption of open source revivals like these, this is the first time the replacement to official servers is more or less ready to go before the official source even went down.
There's been a huge leap forward for the GameCube in terms of homebrew recently too, which is amazing to see!

Man how awesome is this! Way to go to the Pretendo team, you guys rock!
I don't know if they will, because I dunno how it all works, but hopefully Pretendo will be able to clean up the GTS on Pokemon X/Y, ORAS, Sun/Moon, Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, because it's just a mess.
I just hope I can wonder trade agin after the Shutdown!
I asked a question on the discord a few months ago now and one moderator did they yes, there will be support for Pokemon and it'll even have an "anti-cheat", stopping hacked pokemons and stopping crashes etc
If the DS Pokemon games are anything to go by, then some more obviously hacked mons will probably slip through the cracks of the anti-cheat, but it will be nowhere near as bad as official GTS. Holy carp that's me at 6:15!
I hope any percentage of people who watch this video set up Pretendo. Splatoon is an absolute joy on the Steam Deck but sometimes there aren't enough people on to fill up a lobby.
That's good news for all owners. This should be mandated by law to companies to provide for an exit path for their dying consoles: make the system available to users so that they can build and develop a successor or several.
Obviously companies wouldn't want a "successor" to consoles 'cause that's competition from using their stuff. At best they should just let people make their own servers, and maybe even help them set it up, for purely preservational purposes. Otherwise someone's gonna find a way to make a buck out of it and not in a good way.
@@MusicComet if they aren't even making money off of the platform (or even games since they shut down the eshop years ago) why does competition matter at all
@@memes_gbc674 Maybe they consider themselves competition in a sense lol
Like, "buy the new thing instead!!"
@@memes_gbc674 I mean competition as in "I took your work and used it as mine for profit". Because to me allowing access to a console sounds like allowing access to how the console works (so like giving a McDonald burger recipe), which unless is like 60 years old I'd say it's still valid for Nintendo to defend that imo. All for preservation but obviously Nintendo doesn't want to spill the secrets, or any other company for that matter.
Thanks for the video! Great timing :)
See this is what makes emu/roms/game preservation so so important. I love the idea of the games, and live service still working instead of being defunct never to be experienced again. There are games from my past that I never want to forget. For instance, sitting in the floor playing on a small crt and booting up Ratchet and Clank, Yu-Gi-Oh Duelist of the Roses, or Capsule Coliseum, Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2, and so many many more exciting, wonderful games. If I lost access indefinitely to those games/memories and eventually the discs rot or console hardware fail, I'd be so heartbroken. I've already lost my childhood elementary school, and other things from my childhood. I'd rather not lose access to my lifelong favorite hobby.
Great stuff, thank you for the video. I will definitely try this out on my freshly hacked white 32 GB Wii U.

I played it again today for the first time in years, and I have to agree. The game just feels way nicer than Splatoon 2, I should never have moved. Although I never played Splatoon 2 much, 1 was my main game for a while.
I just modded my new 3ds xl a few days ago, after owning it for 9 years lol. I’ll definitely be downloading Pretendo onto it now too, because I love playing with other people. I was sad the online support was shut down, but I’m glad Pretendo exists to bring the 3ds online community back to life ❤
I played a TON of Super Mario Maker and Splatoon this past week or so dreading this day, but I'm so happy Pretendo exists so I can jump back in from time to time.

Well, it's hard to believe today is the day. I'm grateful that we'll have these alternative solutions. Even if we need time to rebuild the other game features, I'm ready to see where this goes. Nintendo literally can’t do shit.
Apparently, Pretendo even has contacts with Nintendo. (They used these to raise issues with Mario Maker in the previous six months.)
Nintendo tends to turn a blind eye to people who aren't making money, like in the case of the Mother 3 translation patch or the ROM hacking community generally
@@agromchung yeah, they don't want to be seen as total asshats.

This is something I really apreciate about pc gaming. a lot of games usually have public servers backed into the game, so even after the stop of develper support, you can usually still find some online games without going out of your way. and if you do go out of your way, there is often a lot of community fixes.
