I think we really took Miiverse's implementation in various Wii U games for granted. It really gave each game a sense of community and never felt like you were the only one playing. Seeing the WaraWara Plaza filled with Miis again is awesome. I'm glad that Pretendo brought life back into the Wii U again.
Your kinda right. To be honest I’m not sure if im the only one who feels this but sometimes when playing single player games on Wii or Wii U I feel lonely. Any kind of communication makes games feel less lonely for me, whether it’s just me on the phone while playing single player game or other people writing messages that pop up give it a sense of lively hood. On the Wii they never really had any communication rather that just online which has been completely demolished. I don’t have a pc so I don’t have Wii online and won’t have Wii U online or pretendo so when I play Wii it’s still kinda lonely but I’m still very happy to see the archive of the Wii U.
Man, I miss Nintendo. Their online ecosystem during the Wii U/3DS days was really something special. The Switch is a good system but there are so many things about it that just feel empty compared to what Nintendo used to be like.
Honestly, if they can add messaging and party to the system. Yes PLEASE! So many time i just want a better way to play with my friends. Like over 50% of the switch user base are people that are young adults. Switch can easily do it. But it’s Nintendo.
I honestly preferred the Wii U to the switch which gets me death stares in my friend group lol. The switch feels like its stuck on severe parental controls in terms of online connectivity and community. Where's the point in adding users as friends after a match of Splatoon 3 or Smash Ultimate if you can't even message them?
I always see messages like this and then ponder where these people were when the WiiU and 3DS existed and rather struggled in several instances throughout their runs. The Wii U, 3DS, PS3 and 360 have an advantage in that online or local play was already possible in a lot of games. You still have to engineer it on a per game basis to weed out desyncs, but it's a lot harder to add online play to games that had no network capabilities to begin with, but with enough effort, hopefully one day we can bring every multiplayer game and every retro/arcade machine online
I understand why they would want a paid tier and really appreciate the work done. But doesn’t getting money involved inevitably get Nintendos attention?
2 games that really need the Pretendo treatment are Mario vs Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars for 3DS & WiiU. Using Miiverse to give/receive points/exp to/from other players was necessary in order for players to progress through the game.
I am just SO glad that they are perserving EVERYTHING From Mario Maker basically! So all of those millions of levels and hard work put into creating them all won`t go to waste! And it means you will always have time to get all mystery mushroom costumes and complete the expert and super expert 100 Mario challenge.
What I'm concerned about is...will enough Wii U owners mod their Wii Us and set this up for online multiplayer in Splatoon 1 to actually have a large enough playerbase to be viable? It's not like Mario Kart Wii Wiimfi which is one of the best selling games of all time on one of the best selling consoles of all time, so that even if only a fraction of users homebrewed their Wiis and set up Wiimfi it was still plenty large enough to be viable. But with this it's the opposite given how poorly the Wii U sold and Splatoon just not having the same massive appeal as Mario Kart. But if that ends up not being an issue, this will be great! I just got a Wii U like 3 months ago for an absolute STEAL on Ebay so I could finally play Splatoon 1 in its last days (despite having 2 and 3) and it's been a total blast, but not only that, but apparently the Wii U I got was one that came bundled with a digital copy of Mario Kart 8 pre-installed, which was NOT in the ebay description (again, got it for an absolute steal, cheaper than most other options I saw), so hey, a free copy of Mario Kart 8 Wii U as well was great! So it's great to hear that the fanmade online for both is working well so that these can be preserved! Just, again, I'm hoping enough people actually set it up for it to be really usable.
@@ogolow570 Yeah exactly. I wonder how many of them would actually be willing to just set up Pretendo. Especially since I bet there are many of them who are just normal casual players, here in the West pretty much anyone playing Splatoon 1 are just the big core fans already but I wouldn't be surprised if that's not the case over there.
@@legoboy7107 Looks like they'll be lost to the void. Doubt any of them besides one or two really dedicated splatoon fans with decent english proficiency even know there's a fan effort to keep our community alive let alone have the drive to actually mod their Wii U's for it, but maybe there is some hope like with Cemu like @workinprogress8978 mentioned. We'll see in a month's time. Hoping for the best
The closest thing to pretendo on the market right now is fightcade, so we can look at that. Any game reaching 1000 concurrent players is a miracle, and all but the most popular games typically are at 0 players. That being said, even 100 players is enough to make a solid match in most games, and the people willing to jump through the hopes to get this working are dedicated enough to always be up for another match.
I absolutely cannot wait to play steel diver sub wars again with people. That game was a fantastic time killer on the bus and I remember my friends and I yelling at each other over that game lmao
I'm very excited about this and commend them for the work they're doing. One thing does worry me though. We've recently seen Nintendo shut down the distribution of yuzu and citra. One thing that some speculate caused this, was the fact they monetized it by having a patreon. The fact that some features are locked behind a paywall in Pretendo makes me concerned that Nintendo might go after them as well. Just a thought tho, the service looks great. Edit: developer response in the replies, check it out.
Thank you for the concern! I'm the lead developer over at Pretendo. We have taken every precaution possible to ensure we don't step on Nintendo's toes, and Nintendo does already know we exist :) we strongly believe if Nintendo wanted us gone, we would be gone by now (we just reached 7 years of development)
@@jondbarrowCan you chip in on what OP means by features being locked behind a paywall? Which features are those? Edit: Oops, its quite quickly explained in the video. No features originally on the service will be paid on Pretendo though correct?
I'm pretty certain the biggest things was that the patreon sub was required to play the TotK leak on Yuzu. That's one thing that was specifically emphasized in the lawsuit as evidence towards the group's encouragement of piracy. Citra was caught in the crossfire because it was mostly the same core group of people as Yuzu
Yuzu was taken down due to guides to decrypt Switch games, their Patreon was a mention because it was being used as proof that they were profiting of this "illegal decryption." which means they stole revenue from Nintendo due to piracy. Online services cost money to run, and there's no aspect to pretendo that enables piracy, so they likely wouldn't be targeted because Nintendo has no profit loss by allowing them to exist. In fact, it would give them a more valid reason to cut their Online Services because it's one less thing they will have to pay for.
i think the paywall thing is being misconstrued by people; it was mentioned in nintendo's case along with the fact that +1 million downloads for tears of the kingdom happened pre-release. that's not saying nintendo hates software developer patreons, that's saying "these people financially benefited off the Actual Crime (piracy) and have enough of a paper trail that they seem to condone piracy" running fan made servers doesn't have any direct link to software piracy and i'm sure the pretendo team is messaging the service as a way to keep people's legitimately owned copies of games playable; they should be fine
Be careful! NEW created NNIDs can no longer download pre-downloaded games! Those accounts are no longer supported. Ony PNIDs can use Pretendo. And only pre-used Ninendo Network IDs, can still redownload things now!
My original Network ID was linked to my old Wii U and to be fair it was just DLC for Breath Of The Wild and Mario Kart 8 which I now have on Switch, so my current Wii U isn't tied to any Nintendo Network ID's should be good :)@@SmartZero-f8e
...Have you ever covered the fan server thing for Super Mario Bros. 35? It's not Wii U/3DS related, but...I feel like that game could use some love. Dunno if its fan server thing is still going, though...but last I heard is that not many people bothered with it. :c
18:15 ZombieU could've been so much better if Ubisoft made it so that more than 1 zombie hunter can be playing on the TV screen for 3, 4, or 5 players.
Just wanna note - pretendo is trying and doing great but there are still many games/servers they have yet to even begin tracking progress on (ex: Xenoblade X)
If it doesnt already, I hope this eventually works for Bravely Default and Bravely Second, since those had independent servers that shut down independently of the 3DS online service and not having that makes a good chunk of content completely inaccessible via natural means.
What about Bravely Default and Bravely Second? You could get villagers to rebuild Norende and the moon base online. Those games used their own servers, and they have already shut down.
Look, mom! I'm on TV! In all seriousness, I would appreciate it if you could revisit this once again. While Infrastructure can be reverse-engineered, a lot of Wii U spot passes are going to be lost due to the lack of people with older NNIDs and Wii U able to dump them. It's front and center, the most important thing right now to finish. This service also seriously needs more active players. There are plenty who want to use Juxtaposition, but there are very few people who play online, which leads to being unable to really play any game. I'm assuming the player account will be increased dramatically once the Online Play shutdown hits, but it's still concerning Amazing video either way!
This is just wonderful. I will certainly be using Pretendo with my Wii U and 2DS XL. Thanks for a great video again, Jon! Here's hoping Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS will be soon be supported...
I really hope one day Pretendo can create a server for Pokemon Bank as bank or day shutting down will mean it will be impossible to transfer anything gen 7 and before to the switch games. Be it if the option to transfer from bank also disappears from Home
That would be impossible without it linking to a completely separate app on Switch because there is no way Nintendo is going to allow Bank on Pretendo to connect to official Nintendo Network on Switch. The only solution imo at least would be save editing, or have a separate app where they go to a general hub and then u can somehow transfer them into the games via that app (would be hb only obviously), but the app would also have to register the mons the same way Home would when a Bank to Home transfer is done so they are not flagged incorrectly.
is Metroid Prime: Federation Force compatible with Pretendo? that's an extremely underrated game which would be fantastic to preserve the online for. the entire game is only really fun when played with other people online just like with Zelda Triforce Heroes.
I really hope they can get the public battles working for Splatoon soon, however from what I've heard they seem to be making good progress on getting the servers to work. Also, being able to use Miiverse brought the biggest smile to my face.
Possible, but would require a ton of work from the Switch side of things as well (would require a whole new application to recieve the mons) as there is no way in hell Nintendo would allow Custom network to connect to Official servers.

You still have to engineer it on a per game basis to weed out desyncs, but it's a lot harder to add online play to games that had no network capabilities to begin with, but with enough effort, hopefully one day we can bring every multiplayer game and every retro/arcade machine online
9:34 hey there i am! sad that we couldn't get to play together completely in pokken. but if that footage is enough i don't mind it.
I can’t wait to set this up. Been using my Wii U again more often and it feels lonely with the plaza just displaying generic messages.
can't wait to emulate splatoon online on my deck, this will be revolutionary
I'm really hoping that with Smash 3DS remaining online, we can see a Smash Run Mod that would let us play that mode online (if at all possible)
"Y can't metroid crawl" is back!
Wiimmfi restores multiplayer features on DS/Wii and now we have Pretendo for 3DS/WiiU. Great news.
I understand why they would want a paid tier and really appreciate the work done. But doesn’t getting money involved inevitably get Nintendos attention?
Looks cool and all, but if they get Smash Wii U’s Miiverse stage working again, then I’m sold.
If Nintendo files a cease and desist letter against Pretendo, the Kyoto-based firm will have nothing to gain from that action.
We can finally get repeatedly flashbanged on the smash miiverse stage again.
For someone to be able to do this basically for free, makes you really wonder why companies take down their online services.
5:05 Balloony!!!
Wii U Online: Pretendo You saved my life.
The Japanese player base which is like half of our community is going to take a nose dive
Cemu cross-play. That will increase the playerbase substantially, even when wii u consoles eventually permanently die.
Tried getting on sometime ago and got an error, I was very disappointed.

as someone who played Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury i can tell you that the stamps are still in the game. They even have color now
I'm very excited about this and commend them for the work they're doing.
In fact, it would give them a more valid reason to cut their Online Services because it's one less thing they will have to pay for.
i think the paywall thing is being misconstrued by people; it was mentioned in nintendo's case along with the fact that +1 million downloads for tears of the kingdom happened pre-release. that's not saying nintendo hates software developer patreons, that's saying "these people financially benefited off the Actual Crime (piracy) and have enough of a paper trail that they seem to condone piracy"
running fan made servers doesn't have any direct link to software piracy and i'm sure the pretendo team is messaging the service as a way to keep people's legitimately owned copies of games playable; they should be fine
I don’t have my 3DS anymore but have recently picked up a Wii U and this is awesome, created my account just now can’t wait
Once again Jon putting out banger after banger videos. The other members are just there. Feels like this is Jons channel honestly.
...Have you ever covered the fan server thing for Super Mario Bros. 35? It's not Wii U/3DS related, but...I feel like that game could use some love. Dunno if its fan server thing is still going, though...but last I heard is that not many people bothered with it. :c
Yes! My childhood game: Minecraft for the Wii U is working. I love this service.
I hope one day they can get it working for Animal Crossing New Leaf, Fire Emblem Fates and Xenoblade X
Considering I didn't like Splatoon 2 and I'm not sure I'd like 3, I'm glad to have a way to play online Splatoon 1!
4:25 Mabel thinking about Sonic. Thanks Racous lol
I recently stumbled upon someone Playing Minecraft on wii U and joined their game.
It was surprisingly smooth, even with my shoddy wifi.
18:15
ZombieU could've been so much better if Ubisoft made it so that more than 1 zombie hunter can be playing on the TV screen for 3, 4, or 5 players.
Pretendo, also known as heckin' validtendo
Just wanna note - pretendo is trying and doing great but there are still many games/servers they have yet to even begin tracking progress on (ex: Xenoblade X)
finally, i can still play the original mario kart 8 battle mode for the rest of my life
I'm really glad the community will do what Nintendon't
If it doesnt already, I hope this eventually works for Bravely Default and Bravely Second, since those had independent servers that shut down independently of the 3DS online service and not having that makes a good chunk of content completely inaccessible via natural means.
Wait, they are gone? F.
@@lpfan4491 They've been gone for a while now, unfortunately.
It's cool that fans are keeping WII U and 3DS online alive but don't let Nintendo find out ok.
What about Bravely Default and Bravely Second? You could get villagers to rebuild Norende and the moon base online. Those games used their own servers, and they have already shut down.
theres work arounds for bravely second using a tool and *coof emulation*
@noyukikun I don't like emulation.
@@bensell982then none of this is for you… almost all of this works off emulation at some level
@@shrimpshufflr7745 I'm fine with modding the system. I hate using emulation on pc.
@@bensell982 no I mean the way the servers are going to have to be run/obtaining knowledge of how to work them
I actually completely forgot about all this 3d world miiverse functionality, its sad it dissapeared for so long, but its now back!
You had me at Kid Icarus: Uprising
Custom splat festival are always enjoyable, especially if they change up stages such as adding zip lines and conveyor belts in the stages.
It's so exciting to think about custom StreetPass events, Miiverse communities, and hidden gems coming back online!
Look, mom!
I'm assuming the player account will be increased dramatically once the Online Play shutdown hits, but it's still concerning
Amazing video either way!
Any way i can help? i have first model 3ds, wiiu, and i think first month NNID
there is a way to preverse spot pass though...at least for 3DS with a empty SD Card which I need to do lol.
the homebrew community never ceases to amaze me
Man, I really hope Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and 4 Ultimate get supported on Pretendo ASAP.
6:29 what a throwback
YOU’RE a throwback…
While trying to play SDSW online about a week ago, I was unfortunately met by a discontinuation error. But I am glad to see the community support!
I really hope they can get the public battles working for Splatoon soon, however from what I've heard they seem to be making good progress on getting the servers to work. Also, being able to use Miiverse brought the biggest smile to my face.
"You're not Nintendo... you're PREtendo!"
Hopefully this means that Pokémon Bank and Transporter gets Pretendo support as well...
That would be godly
Possible, but would require a ton of work from the Switch side of things as well (would require a whole new application to recieve the mons) as there is no way in hell Nintendo would allow Custom network to connect to Official servers.
@@Mabayu Sir! Pokemon BANK is a 3DS-software! You are alking about Poikemon HOME. Only HOME is a Swich-software.
Pretendo doesn´t run with Switch-softwaer/Accounts/games.
@@SmartZero-f8e Which is exactly my point lol. And Im not a sir XD.
Nintendo WILL NOT allow Bank to connect to Home using Pretendo as it is a custom server and not Nintendos official server.
@@Mabayu Ooooh! now i get you. Oh boy, it does sound like another lawsuit is incoming soon...!
Hot damn I might have to actually finish Triforce Heroes!!
Pretendo sounds amazing! I must get it soon, like this comment if you are excited to communicate in Wind Waker HD!
can't wait for Monster Hunter 3U/4U to be ready
524.1 gb for every single level made in Mario Maker 1 is impressive to me. Thats litterally millions, if not billions of levels made for all of it to be half a terrabyte. Insane
Can someone explain to me how the mario maker creator history works?
"user1" would have the same Nintendo account from back on wiiU and then have the same ID and account on switch, right?
Do technically, (if they cared) Nintendo could link the user's "maker history" to catagorize what they made in Mario maker 1 and 2. Right?
kid icarus uprising my beloved...
i do know there's a discord server that coordinates weekly lobbies, and they're going until nintendo network goes offline. i'm SO excited to hear that the multiplayer can be preserved in some fashion. i always thought that game deserved more love, hands down the best game on the 3ds, and more people need to experience both the story and online
My mom never turned on miiverse for me when I got my Wii U but such a silly community has always looked like so much fun to me. Can't wait to see it. :)
Thank you for making me aware of the RB3 online being revived. I love that game so much and I can't wait to actually be able to do battle of the bands on RB3!
Switch version does have stamps, just it has a different purpose. On wii u its for miiverse, while on switch its for the snapshots. Thats why theyre black and white on wii u but colored on switch
2:06 THATS ME OMG
That "Beta paywall" is screaming for the ninjas to attack 😅
7:56 consider voice acting. You really nailed that "battle mode"
So when is he taking over as the new Halo announcer VA?
The multiplayer for Kid Icarus: Uprising was a blast. I'm excited that more people can experience that again.
I didn't even know they were gonna restore all the old Mario Maker levels once Nintendo Network goes down. Now I'm actually excited for it to happen. I hope they also get 100 Mario challenge back soon, that was a massive portion of my playtime when I was a kid.
Some of the changes they made to Mario Golf in Super Rushed are unforgivable. I really hope World Tour will be fully functional in the future, it's my favorite Mario Golf of them all.
Good god I miss the WiiU. I miss THIS. This was gaming to me as a kid and honestly is what I miss most in modern gaming.
