Last month, Nintendo shut down the Nintendo Network for the 3DS and Wii U. This marked the end of official online support for both consoles. Thanks to a fan project called Pretendo, online functionality for the 3DS and Wii U lives on! But how good is Pretendo really?

wdym most? i feel like half the time its a struggle to get it to function at all, and it only supports like 1 3ds game so no pokemon or anything that NEEDS pretendo

Yeah I feel Pretendo, specially the website, is not finished. Like if there's a password character limit on Wii U, and that prevents you from entering your password on the site, then the site itself should disclose that character limit as well.
But again, it's unfinished, just give them time and I'm sure Pretendo will become a great thing.

Awesome vid! i think the main thing that makes me conflicted on this is the lack of transparency they provide as i shouldn't have to join a discord server or make forum account just to see what exactly is going on, the forum was something i just found out about 2 days ago, in addition to that the friends list on 3DS just straight up doesn't work despite the website stating otherwise, it's a pretty rough ordeal considering when you bring up these issues to someone relevant to the project, you get either a snarky response or told that it's a WIP which in hindsight is understandable but hard to stomach when the websites statistics contradict how the actual product performs, i see alot of people still speak highly of the project so it makes me wonder if there was something i'm missing here.

You don't need to use Discord or make a forum account. The forum was created in direct response to people not wanting to use Discord. It was made for that exact reason, since we understand not everyone can, or wants to, use the platform. You also do not need to make a "forum" account, the forum connects directly with our existing account system. The account used by the forum is the same account used by the rest of our services as a whole, it's all one unified system. You can also get fairly frequent, albeit smaller, updates on our various social media. We are on both Twitter and Mastodon, as well as Bsky (though we're slow to update there) and one of our developers runs an unofficial Tumblr.

What specific issues were you facing? The forum was made for support in mind, so you can always report issues there. But without any real details there's nowhere to go? I just tried the friends list apps on my personal 3DS, 2DS, and both of my Wii Us (both consoles use the same server), without issue, as do many others. Do feel free to report any issues you're having and we can try to get it sorted.

Do you have specific examples of this, outside of the already mentioned friends server issues? Also do keep in mind that the website's progress page does say it's not 100% accurate to the project's real status. It's a very high-level overview of what to generally expect, and there *are* times when a regression may occur which isn't reflected on the website.

Do you have anyone specific in mind for this one? I keep pretty close tabs on all of our core development team, and haven't seen such behavior myself. But if I've missed anything like this I'd be happy to look into it. I take those kinds of things pretty seriously.

The 3ds friends list: i just can't exactly add anyone for some reason, I've tried adding a friend of mine along with the 3ds rich presence bot made by (delta I think it was??)
The second point after that:
It was mainly referring to the friends list tbh because that does say 100% (ingore this though since i had no idea the website isnt always up to date so ill keep that in mind) but I've tried looking for answers as to why it's like that and maybe there was something I wasn't doing right and I recall coming across a reddit post with a similar issue and people were basically saying that pretendo is still in beta and whatnot, but in regards to actual games I have to be honest here, I've seen alot of people get errors with games but i have not, juxt just stopped working for me one day I'm actually not sure what happened there tbh
Last point: I recall it happening in the rverse discord and from I've seen its kind of a bridge between the two communities so feel free to tell me that what I say doesn't count: but I recall from when I had my old account I remember a moderator named termy I think it was just being extremely snarky and sometimes a bit moody especially when it came to asking questions whether it'd be about pretendo itself or rverse.
I hope this clears up any confusion, I don't hate pretendo at all nor do I wish anything bad on the people behind it itself but, from here all I'm hoping is that my concerns will be a small stepping stone to helping this community go forward, I've been in the 3ds modding community for as long as I can remember I'm not a big face or anything but I've seen alot of great things come and go and I hope this is one thing that continues to grow

When was the last time you tried, and what error were you getting? We very recently (as in within the past few days) released several bug fixes and stability updates for the friends server, for both consoles. Also that bot has always been broken on our servers, but that bot is not something we officially support either at this time

As much as I'm sure the answer is not satisfying, the truth is that yes Pretendo is just in beta. A lot of the issues we have, including nearly all the ones in this video, are simply just from unimplemented features (not even bugs, just features or whole games we have yet to implement) and some are not even in our control (such as the mentioned SMM costumes disappearing issue, that's just the Wii U being the Wii U). Nintendo Network is a very, VERY, large task to emulate and we only have one full time developer. All other work is done by volunteers, on their own time, so development goes rather slow and is spent mostly on research at this time.

While we are friends with the founder of rverse, and we support the project where we can, you shouldn't really consider our communities as one. We are separate projects, with separate teams, and separate users. In fact many users in the rverse community publically hate Pretendo. As for the moderator, Terminal is both no longer a part of rverse and he has never been a part of Pretendo, development or moderation wise, so anything he's done does not reflect our values. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with that community however and I'd be more than happy to pass this along to the correct channels

Overall I do appreciate the response and i do apologize for grouping rverse and pretendo as one I figured that wouldn't be a fair but just wasn't too sure, I will give try adding my friend tomorrow as it'd probably be a good idea since last I tried was 2 weeks ago, thanks a bunch and I hope to be able to support in anyway I can going forward! Even if it's as little as using the service itself

SPLATOON IS 9 YEARS OLD?
Pretendo has a progress page where you can see which features in a game are working and which games are supported at all. It doesn't look like Smash 4 is on the supported games list but there are some features related to it listed under NEX. (I guess you showed it near the end of the video)
I believe you can have an area on pretendo if you create the account on the console, but that may only be if the account was created on a 3ds.

10:39 Pretty sure this happens due to a problem either with your WiFi Routers Settings or because your ISP dosent allow the features needed. This error also happened on Nintendo Network afaik

I’m a say that I think it’s a pretty good idea and I think it’s an awesome idea that someone came up with the idea to try to bring services back to the DS and the 3DS family systems. It’s not the fault of the system that it is now abandoned by NINTENDO. While I understand that NINTENDO cannot continue to keep servers online for every single handheld device every single game system that they were playing with, the most important thing is to understand that just because NINTENDO doesn’t support it anymore by providing online services that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are not being used every day.
I own a 2DS, AND A 3DS XL AND A 2DS XL myself, and I play with mine quite regularly, in fact, I play with my switch almost every day, along with my 3DS. There are certain games that you cannot play on the switch that you can play on the 3DS because of the virtual console, or there are games that you can play on the 3DS because you have the cartridge, but if you don’t have any online connection, then the only thing that it is good for is things that can be used because you can go online and be able to mod the system to be able to allow yourself to be able to use the system again.
I have a pretendo 0:41 account myself. However, just like the gentleman says, the system that they are building is not 100% done, and as such there are going to be things that aren’t going to be there yet, but you can at least have an account there and link them to the 3DS using the account services. Once you do that, using a modded 3DS, you will be able to connect to the pretend servers and be able to play some not all of the games that you might want to play just yet.
This does not necessarily mean that pretendo has done all of what it wants, and it will continue to work on things as they get it the way they want it. The 3DS family systems is one of the best systems that I’ve ever come out, second only to the switch because of the fact that you can still go online to play games and you have games available online
I haven’t connected to their servers yet, because I still have to link an ID, but once I do, I will be able to determine what works best for me and be able to play with it a lot. Right now I’m playing super Mario Brothers two for the DS and it’s pretty cool, and I’m also playing super Mario Bros wonder for the switch, and I love both systems: each system has its use and its purpose, and if you are a player of older games, your 3DS will come in quite handy if you’re a guy from an eight bit universe like me, that used to play all the 2600 games or the old Nintendo games. It all depends on what system that you like and what games you play. That is why when you make a decision to buy a system, there’s always a decision behind it and there’s always a reason reason.
It will continue to expand this and make it better. Like I said, it is not the DS’s fault that it was discontinued, but there’s no reason to discontinue it when you have a good homebrew community and people that play games like this all the time: if somebody finds a way to make something happen, usually it does.

Dragon Quest X Online would be fun to play, is also possible to force the servers using a gecko cheat “No Anti Error Code-106” I’m sure that’s what Mario Maker needs

They weren’t,the fact one old man (Wimm is in his 60’s today mind you) could do something a bunch of 20 years old could make in 4 years in ONLY a bunch of months is incredible
DO NOT GET PRETENDO ON OLD 3DS it will cause a bug where the hardware will malfunction with your cfw and it will crash your system causing it to not boot up for a while, signs of this is when the 3d turns on and off again and then freezes the system causing you to hard reset, Which is just turning your system off for awhile, now if it works fine for you then go ahead but if you starts seeing these signs you need to shut it off go to settings and delete pretendo
I haven't heard of that, although my Pretendo focus was mostly on Wii U.
Whether or not this is a consistent issue or countermeasures are being developed, this is still a concern to keep in mind when hacking your consoles. Discretion is advised when adding any hacked plugin to your consoles, especially ones not included in hack setup guides.

Hey, not saying that you're wrong but I've had pretendo enabled on my old 3ds XL and haven't had any issues like you've mentioned. Could be a specific variable that causes the crash that I don't have on my system, but in the mean time I'd encourage others to take @faz10do's advice just in case
It’s weird because my friend has pretendo on an old 2ds
Splatoon with Pretendo works great and anytime you receive the connection error you connect to a wifi hotspot instead, and when it stops working just go back to wii u home, then connect to your regular internet, go back to wii u home, settings, and then reconnect the wii u to your hotspot and then it'll work 100%. I personally use the windows mobile hotspot connected to my regular internet. I also rarely have issues filling up lobbies.

If you use both the plugin and the Hackless DNS it works much better.
Smash Wii U isn't supported by Pretendo yet. It's still very WIP.
They're going to add nearly all of the archived Mario Maker levels.
Also Pretendo only has a single person working on it full time I assume more people will work on full time the more people pitch on patreon. So it's not going to be it's best for a long long time.

I wish I could download pretendo but unfortunately I don’t have a computer which means I can’t download it. Hopefully one day they’ll make it where you can download it via the console like they did for Wiimifi on the Wii.
Last month they announced a non homebrew version for Wii U, I’m not sure if it works now, but it uses DNS settings on Wii U, not home brew or computer needed

@@cooper9607 Currently not. But if you have a Phone with an SD Card reader you could use that to install Pretendo.
@@cooper9607 on 3DS it's as easy as just going to the Universal Updater and searching "Nimbus" and there you go. (you need a modded 3DS)

No. Keep your old account. Create a new one using Pretendo's process. That new account coexists with all others on your console.

Doesn’t support the pokemon 3ds titles yet sadly but the pretendo devs said they are working on it. Pretendo isn’t completed yet and is in beta only working for a few games. Definitely keen to play Gen 6-7 online with my friends again tho when they update it

Honestly, Super Mario Maker on Wii U was super fun, and easy to control. I bought Mario Maker 2 for Switch, and it just isn't as intuitive and fun to control, and doesn't have those mystery mushrooms which was a super cool feature. So for that game, it's just better on wii u. All the other major Wii U games that had online play are just better or have better equivalents on switch in my opinion.

Pretendo cannot even render Miis correctly...as i uses a Mii-Switch-rendered! that says it all. It uses low-quality rendered Miis lmao! Annoying. Will never use it.
And Retroarch will never work on Aroma btw. It´s still broken 1 year later (and it cannot be fixed, as Aroma simply doesn´t support what´s needed for Aroma´s new Sound-patch to run, Aroma doesn´t support 3-core-execution).
For this reason Aroma simply sucks as well. Game over for both.
Aroma is only good for ONLINE now in combination of Pretendo.
But if you don´t care about online (there is another method of going in custom online-matches with others, just not with those who are running in Pretendo-servers), but if you care about Retroarch finally using some of the WiiU´s power...then forget about Aroma. Since you cannot run Retroarch on Aroma.
