Sometimes we spend way too much time focusing on being good... Playing the right part, getting our technique down, hitting the right notes... That we forget what we are attracted to most about our favorite musicians and performers. Take a look and a listen to most frontmen and you'll notice that confidence is usually more of a factor when it comes to making memorable music than technical proficiency is! It's not that we don't want to hone our craft, but building confidence and delivering our singing and guitar playing in a way that is relatable should be a top priority among us musicians. In this video, I give you a cool way to do that!

I've found this channel four days ago and I can sincerely say it's one of the best channels i have ever discovered. It's not a pure technical channel, not even only a coach reacting to other singers. You mix all of that content and more, and give it an extra plus... One of the best things about your content is that you come with very helpfull things, things that no one ever explains to you but you have to find on your own... and those are the things that (I think) helps you to finally shape yourself as a musician. Keep on with the good content. Cheers from Argentina!

Thank you for this comment! What you are observing is EXACTLY why I started this channel. I wanted to teach people how to FEEL! No amount of diagrams or terms is going to help you feel what's right. You have to get out of your comfort zone. You have to experiment. You have to learn to think differently and introspectively. Glad to have you following the lessons!

@@chrisliepe Indeed, many thanks. I love your channel. There are others but your tuition is so complete and the willingness to sound 'strange' as a method to tune / explain / try is so useful. Another very thankful subscriber. Still working on my confidence but hoping to get there. Out of interest, do you do any listening reviews, something I can pay for with you?

The reason i love you and this channel is that you don't fear to look "good" in front of other singers and your audience. I think there is a sense that singers always have to be "perfect" when they sing, and you teach by not worrying about how you sound but instead showing through example. Love it brotha

I lost confidence in every part of my life a long time ago, I was a passable singer at one stage but everything fell apart and I lost confidence to the point that I didn't want to make a sound when anyone could hear it. Couple years later I tried to sing again and I was awful, went down the rabbit hole of watching technique videos and end up thinking about support and tone more than the music. I still have the problem that I don't have anywhere to practice that I can sing at more than a speaking volume and it breaks my heart a bit. I've really been hankering to figure out a way to get back to it, even in the shed out back I'm worried my neighbours will hear... I've stuck with music but just concentrating on instruments /sound engineering etc. but it really does feel like I'm being drawn back towards singing. I remember christopher hitchens saying about writing that he couldn't live without it. I've realised recently singing and writing songs is like that for me and am glad I found your channel.

callmedeno Try singing in a car, or garage, or basement, or outdoors. I totally feel where you’re coming from, and so I just had this idea to begin writing with my guitar in the backseat of my car. If the car sounds too boxy, park off the side of the road and let the windows down. Chris is right that we have to develop the confidence in “letting loose”. Cheers!

I've heard you talk about this in other videos, you're completely right. I need to do this more often tbh.
Sometimes when I'm just freestyling I sing something without really knowing what I'm doing and it sounds really authentic and good. Then I try to redo it to really polish it... And it almost never fucking works. I start getting sweaty and frustrated😂😭 definitely has to do with letting go and just having that innate trust and confidence in yourself.
I'm gonna commit to this type of practice, this is really the ceiling breaker. Thanks Chris🙏🏼❤

I'm not sure how I came to see this today but I hit the biggest wall in my singing where I sung a song that was completely out of my comfort zone and recorded. After listening to it back again, it was the worst thing I've ever heard. After this the rest of the day my motivation to continue practicing anything to do with singing went into the bin. Super demoralizing especially I actually thought it was ok. Thanks for the video, I really needed it.

This is fucking great man. The best lessons are the ones that are already in you, but someone else puts it in a way that's simple, or that maybe you just haven't looked at it like that yourself and it just opens up a portal for you. Talking, jiving, jamming, singing silly to myself is something I've always done around the house, sometimes with friends, and just because I'm comfortable in that setting I'm not thinking about what's coming out or how it's coming out or who is listening. But now that I know that it's actually beneficial and essential for coming out of your shell further and further (especially for someone shy like me that tenses up with an audience of one) I can use this knowledge and apply it more often and efficiently. Once again Chris, thank you so much.

I have been playing piano for 15 years, guitar for 7, singing for 0. I’ve always hated the idea of singing; I’ve always hated singing even casually and mostly prefer instrumental music. However, I’ve been thinking about giving it ago. But I can tell you this; this video alone has given me the determination to just send it! So hopefully, with a little practice, I might have a new instrument in my catalogue. :)

Chris you are a great and inspiring person. You give musicians the methods to think outside the box! It is great watching you! I wonder how you learned the theory behind all this stuff. I am really struggling with the theory for years, never got the right source to internalize things like the notes of the guitar neck for example.

    • @67geetar
      @67geetar 4 года назад

If I understand you right, maybe I can help - there's a few ways to learn the notes on a guitar, identify where all the open string notes occur on every string then finding the not open string notes is easy ie C is 1 fret up from B, F is 1 fret up from E etc or you can learn them vertically across the neck and maybe use a (can't remember the term) - example = 5th fret ADGCEA a dog got caught eating apples, 7th fret BEAD - this method doesn't work for sharps and flats but just remember there is no sharp or flat between E and F or B and C, 10th fret DGCFAD - my whatever the technical term is rude for this position so make your own up :) hope this helps

Chris I'm confused. You say you are a baritone (a very very good one I may say) & that you top out in chest around F/G (correct me if that's wrong)
My top out is A & easily hit A# B in scales & my falsetto goes up to above E (12th fret on the guitar )
I've been told I'm a tenor by one & a baritone by a different coach over the years.
I've tried sticking in baritone which works well but it leaves me feeing half baked. I naturally approach singing as if I were a tenor (mentally) then end up whacking out to around A# B - C at a stretch & slip into head/falsetto all the time as I don't get to that B -D easily enough even though my brain seems to tell my voice it should! Am I a baritone or tenor /high bari -low tenor?
It's very confusing. I'd really like your spin on it as it's very confusing 😆

I agree... all this classification causes more confusion than it's worth... have you seen this one yet? ruclips.net/video/6qSwelL3ze4/видео.html

I believe Bono, as well as Steven Tyler and Jon Bon Jovi all went to see a voice teacher in NYC named Katie Agresta that helped them all get better..

    *Just my 2 cents*
Confidence is not the answer to great singing. In fact, just stop trying to be a great/good/better singer. Just remember, or think of how cool it is, how fun it is, to do it. Stop trying to sing great, and rather, be grateful of the wonderful tunes you can sing, whether they be written by yourself or others.
All you have to worry about…sorry let me rephrase. All you have to decide, is what song you would enjoy jamming next. A bird doesn’t question whether or not it’s singing can be better, or if it’s good, or bad, or full of confidence. The damn thing just sings. The pursuit of confidence is just something else you think you can use to be and get better, and the answer to singing, but there is no answer to singing. There is just singing.
People are so caught up in wanting to get better or be the best and they torture themselves, they never have fun. They don’t understand. All they know is work, work, work, work, work. Singing wasn’t meant to be improved. It was meant to be enjoyed.
You’ll notice people will gravitate more towards you as well, once you began having fun, but don’t let it get to your head. When you’re having fun it’s contagious. How fun do you think it would be, to be around some one who is so critical/ (and more than likely highly critical of others) on themselves and only wants to get better and better and better? Better for what? Better than who?
Count the things you get, not how many things you give. Stop taking, stop trying to get…
    Just enjoy

Really nice guy and great tip for all singers! Hits the crucial point of singing we are all going for: letting go and *uck it! ;)

Being inspired to come out of our shells, anyone wanna join a group to sing, practise and let loose together?
There’s apps for this, tons of people on it all accumulating confidence, fun and share technics together.

The first step to be good at something is to know that you suck and to believe that you can get good.Pretty true, isn't it?
