Sounds like a minimalist Steve Reich thing. He was doing that decades ago.
@@myautobiographyafanfic1413yeah, I kept thinking about Electric Counterpoint the entire time I was watching this.
Keep in mind they can all hear each other. Their minds are telling them to catch up and play in time with Rob. Their muscle memory is screaming at them “CATCH UP! CATCH UP! YOUR’RE BEHIND!”. Their headphones weren’t noise cancelling. They essentially had to concentrate on deliberately playing off time which is so difficult to do when you’ve played on time for so long
Not really. When you play for long enough, playing on time isn't something that you are forced to do. It helps with adaptability, but the stability is still there, so if you can get focused on being the exact same distance from the other one, it will be stable as long as no one messes up. Which seemed to be the biggest problem here
They were playing to a click just concerntrate on the click. Someone set the robs to start first then middle then last. Same tempo just a second behind
This!
no, they are just listening to themselves in their headphones and playing to a click. you can even hear rob say in the video, "do we need to move you further away so you can't hear us?" to the guy on the end.
@@eyeseeyou913 that's exactly what the comment meant I think. They can hear each other, but not on purpose. So they have to be careful not to sync up. Honestly they should have gotten noise cancelling headphones since even closed studio headphones they are wearing don't isolate enough. But that was probably not an option budget-wise when this was filmed. And it would have made for a boring video
Yeah girl, I play in a band... as a second delay effect... 😂😂😂
Imagine being credited on an album as "Second Delay Effect"

As a late beginner guitarist, I found this a bit encouraging. I know their job as a team is hard, but you rarely see musicians mess up, nor do you see how many takes they may do before they record one good enough to upload. I'm recording my journey as I learn just so I can see how much I grow with time, and I get frustrated sometimes when I know I can play a piece well but once the camera is on, it just changes everything. The more you attempt it, the harder it gets for some reason. My hands get clammy, and with each attempt, it gets more stiff. It's also tiring at times. I applaud these guys for trying 60 times. There must have been added pressure of everyone being there and time running out. The piece was quite complex with a lot of notes per minute and a lot of string skipping, but they managed to get it done. Great job!
Do you even get they had to play out of sync?
@@meneerhalfwerk7096 I mean, they each had their own sound-blocking headphones with their own personal clicktrack/metronome. I figured it's more keeping your own rhythm and playing the peace without mistakes, not getting confused or distracted by the other two (why one asked if they should move further apart), than it is 'playing out of sync'. The first guy would start on beat 1, second guy starts on beat 2, third guy starts on beat 3, and they all just have to play the piece perfectly after that. At least that's what I figured from watching.
Could also be 1st person on 1st beat, 2nd person on 1+, and 3rd person on 2nd beat. It's quite close, but they're all playing in time with themselves. It's just a matter of starting on a different beat/time and playing through the whole song keeping in time with their own clicktrack/metronome. They could have copied the same person 3 times or record them separately, but they wanted to get the delay effect in that room all recorded at the same time. :)
@@kamekomiyamora The fact that it took 3 decent players 60 takes to get this right, for a song they all practiced and could play well - that aloneproves that it isn't as easy lol
@@Fs3i Exactly 🤯 Even 10 takes is a lot of effort. It's not a short piece either. I could imagine the many times they were SO CLOSE but someone messed up. Deep down, I know everyone makes mistakes, but few show that. All you see is advanced players and pros. They could have just showed us the end result, but it's really nice seeing what it takes to have a clean recording now and then. Now I'm curious how many takes or cuts online bands do before they are satisfied, ya know?
The guy in the middle has the worst of it, he's waiting for Rob and he's hearing the guy on the end.

When you guys actually get close to sync, the little bits of randomness from the two echos really add a dimension to the song that doesn't exist with the delay pedal. This was one hell of an interesting idea.
It's called groove or swing that automation cannot provide.
@@wannabeaninterpreter Automation absolutely can provide groove and swing. That's not what he's talking about. He's talking about the little idiosyncrasies of each guitar blending together to provide a richer and more interesting-sounding delay that you can't achieve with a pedal.

I once had a country level music contest, and there was a pair of guitarists that played a piece specifically written so that one guitar sounds like the echo of another. I was even more impressed when my teacher said that its actually one of the most complicated things to play like that
As an amateur musician and aspiring RUclipsr I often get caught up in that perfectionist ideal and the illusion of "all in one take". Seeing the number of times you guy had to do different takes, take breaks, and just be frustrated really helped me remember that I'll never be perfect the first time around.
I wanted to thank you for showing the process leading up to it, as well as the finished product. It really helped encourage me.

Its super interesting to see how youtube and stuff has an effect on people. Back in my day, the way to get things right was to do it until you got it right, but i guess with all these edits and clips it takes away from that natural realization.
This comment. Agree 10000%.
Dunno how you got that idea in the first place.... A lot of albums take 12 months straight to get done, or in some cases much more than that. If people did things in one take, every album would be recorded over a couple of days.

In defense of middle-guy, he probably had it the hardest because he was hearing the song delayed in two directions relative to him, while the other guys only have to hear it delayed in one direction relative to them.

It happens. If you are a working musician your instruments will catch a few dings, so as long as it isn't broken it's fine. An acoustic guitar dropping on the wooden floor of that empty room must sound mightly loud though.
SteelSkin667 yeah I know. I've dropped a few of my own guitars too. Two or three of them have chipped headstocks because of that. I always panic whenever I drop one though, or whenever I hear one fall.

This is how i started to listen to music. I think in my own head that i can listen to one instrument at a time in a concert, to then expand the view from one to all gives me the chills. Best part is 8:06 when can see them all sequentially moving down the frets
Director after take 60: "Great job guys, now we just gotta do 20 more takes for the closeup and panning shots and we're done!" XD
lip synced of course :-P
string synced?
I think murder would have happened.
they actually just used a camera on a dolly, which they just moved around
Scallon is a big fan of the dolly, so it’s no surprise that they got the cameraman to use it
I love the guy at the backs reaction when he fucks up. It's just a whole lot of head and hand movements and very little noise compared to the other guys lol
Thats because he is the last delay so the volume is low
I mean you can tell he's just being less vocal about it. He just likes gesticulating ; - ;
Ignacio Centurion, you are a legend.
was joking about the intensity because he is the last of the delay...
I failed to properly read your comment before I replied.... I really should have paid more attention before assuming you were just being another pedantic RUclips commenter.... ;-; Nice meme my dude ;)
To some degree, technology is the reason for a lack of collaboration, and connection. But then again, I never would have seen this video without RUclips.
LOVED IT!
Loved it!
loved it!
Such an awesome idea ! Worked out so well in the end
What delay settings is that on? It should've been LOVEOvedivedit!
How is this comment a day ago?
Tell me how much you loved it?
Crysis Music Stupid Idea to do
Martin Anthonyo I never even thought about that. God damn it
I’m gonna be honest, I am surprised it was only 60 takes, this would’ve taken me years, just goes to show how talented these three musicians are.
I thought the same.
Rob, Dee and Lay in the end did a great job! Really enjoyed this!
I come back to this every so often. Incredible.
4:20 "We need to be exactly the same though" Next shot, they're wearing the same cloth 😂
Girl: He's definitely cheating on me...
Me and the boys:

Was gonna like but it’s at 600 likes soooooo....

Incredible video, i came here again 4 years later to bring out your great work!
I cant get over how good it sounds at the ends.. touches my soul
I appreciate the matching shirts.
the should have been slightly different
Maybe each shirt going front to back slightly smaller?
You forgot the matching magical beenies
You know what they say. 60th take is the charm.
NIIIIIIICE! That sounds like the kind of distrortion the edge from U2 uses, but you did it all just with that room and 3 dudes. NICE!
I have watched this SO many times, I just dig how hard this was to do and they overcame and killed the final.
AWESOME JOB GUYS 🤘🤘
And the the guy says: Sorry boys, forgot to start the recording.. ahaha
razordimeback dont say that, i almost can fell the pain 😖😖
