And if it's a mall, you can blast your tunes through the PA system :D
Organs are one of the first forms of synth! Essentially you're just playing with different harmonics and waveforms depending on the design of the pipes!
As an organist, that is a necessary step in playing a piece. The instructions will say stuff like Swell: 8’ Reed, 4’ Flute and you have to find what fits best and put it on a piston for later.
I want to thank the organist, church, and organ builder for making this possible. I will assume that it cost some money and time to fix the MIDI connection. The fact that the church was willing to partake in this adventure is incredible. Thanks also to Rob, his audio/video team, and certainly the sponsors. @@goodtogo2876 How is it disrespectful? This absolutely monumental engineering challenge of an instrument was created because we, as humans, collectively acknowledge the incredible importance of music to connect us, to bring us joy. By extending the capabilities of this instrument beyond what a single person, or even the most synchronized orchestra, can play (which was the original thesis of the organ), we are not only respecting it, but going that one step further in honoring it's spirit.
@justimagine2403 no doubt God would approve. We're using the talent he gave us to _invoke emotion._ It's said that to sing is to praise God twice. What is this but singing to a higher degree?
They gotta open this as a service: email them your midi files and how you want it to sound, they record it with good mics and send back the wav files. Could charge some good money for it, I think there'd be a market
Soundrecorder won't cut it though, you'll need a ton of mics all over the room. But yes you could hire a player as well I guess. Would take more time though as they have to learn the parts.
I love that John is an enthusiastic instrumentalist not a stodgy curator. He hears a crazy idea and doesn't shoot it down because it's not traditional but instead says, "That'd be awesome"
I was thinking the same thing… He just picked up the phone and said… “We want to wire A to B… Can we do that?” That was just so cool because you have to put his query into context… This is a multi-million dollar $$$ instrument that he wants to “tinker“ with… Many kudos to this organ master!
And that dudes answer was "Yeah, it's right next to the INTERNET connector." That thing has an RJ45 plug, aka Ethernet networking. Please tell me it's plugged in.
I'm getting married next month and while at the church I noticed the organ had a midi input. Obviously I recalled this video and thought, well we've got to have a go. It was, to be honest, about as hard as you found it. Thankfully the reverend and Organist were game, and many weeks later we now have a fully midi programmable church organ for our wedding. Unexpected benefit is also the church can now freely program their organ too which is fantastic for them. So thanks for this video and inspiring me
You can record the true sound of this place using a binaural audio microphone. The video titled "Hear New York City in 3D audio" does an incredible job at explaining this and I'm dying to hear the true power of this instrument. Please like so he can see.
Those microphones aren't particularly great for dynamics though. The more ideal setup in this scenario would be to have 2 decent mono mics with a few feet of separation. Then you still get the stereo field similar to binaural and better dynamics.
Wouldn't reach anywhere near the same feeling. Neither those microphones nor youtube would capture the full range made by a pipe organ. A big part of their "power" comes from sub sonic frequencies with some of the largest organs (quite possibly including this one) going into deep into single digit frequencies.
My favorite part of this is John Sherer having absolute focus on making each part sound as amazing as possible, while still having a good time. the mechanics behind these instruments are mindblowing, and he is making it look so easy and effortless
7:16 The astonished reaction of a man who thought he fully understood the limitations and potential of his instrument...and this was just the discovery phase. Imagine MIDI CC controlling the stops...
It literally looked like a real life application of someone using isekai to get to change the world, and it's effects on the original inhabitants... WOW Rob is crazy good
It might be MIDI SysEx that is used to control the stops rather than CC, either way, it would be fascinating to see the MIDI output that is produced when changing stops.
Oh, absolutely no doubt the stops could be controlled with SysEx commands! If the organ console is that modern and implements MIDI, I'm sure they allowed for external control of the stops. You can essentially do that with the registration pistons under each keyboard already. It's how organists change "patches" so quickly. They set up the stops, then save them as a registration on one of the pistons. These consoles are amazing. They often have couplers between manuals (keyboards) so one manual can play pipe stops from another manual, or the pedals. It's super cool stuff. 😊
Every Pop/Rock and Metal song is basically classical music with other instruments. I'd recognize the Pachebell-Song matchup, so many songs are based on this chord progression!!
If I am John, I just had a whole world of possibilities opened. With his intimate knowledge of how his organ works, where sounds come from in the building, and what the organ is capable of, he could write some some absolutely mind bending stuff. I'm excited for him. I hope he jumps all over the possibilities.
I'd love for the church to set up a good mic system for surround sound. Then they could make recordings of the organ and that would be amazing to hear. I hope John does much, much more with that organ!
John was already using the built-in midi record and playback before this video was made.... nothing new to him. what was new to those in the video is that midi-out can be connected to midi-in.... BIG NEWS... this has been happening since the 1980's.
What a great guy John is. He was so willing to just do whatever to help. The man was ready to take apart his organ for you. I am not religious but he is the type of man I would want to encounter at a church. Why did this make me teary eyed? I guess it gave me hope that good people do exist? I don't know this is weird. its late im rambling.
yeah I said the same thing, John is such an amazing guy. Most people wouldn't let anyone play with the organ, let alone try interact with it in this way. But John was totally willing to share the instrument and his knowledge to help make this happen. And then especially when he started calling the engineer and stuff, like most people would have just stopped at that point and said welp, we can't do it. It wasn't hooked up and I can't go through all that to make this work. But he was more than willing to work through that hurdle and make this happen. It shows John's creative passion for this instrument and his willingness to share it with the world, and that's such an amazing gift.
I'm not overly impressed with the midi version. I'd like to hear Bohemian Rhapsody played by an accomplished organist who could bring some life and depth to the performance.
Imagin that he can now literally record midi for his songs and how HE plays them, and even if he'll pass away that position... church can still operate
Truthfully - This just helped out that church a HUGE amount. I have run AV at several churches - and the number one thing that goes wrong - the Piano or organ player is sick or can't make it. Now - he can just program his laptop and train someone to run the midi file for him is he is gone... that is huge! Not to mention, I'm sure he could now program duets that are impossible to play with just one person. This opens up huge possibilities for them - so cool!
@@wushock92 ay, PK Mafia! when my father was in between pastoring positions, we went to the church that most of our family went to, and it had an electric organ. This method will probably help out if that were ever to happen again...
@@Vanlifecrisis Honestly, given that the interface was there, and the plugs were mounted in a handy (if well hidden) connection box under the keyboard, this was obviously intended as a feature of the organ. Not hooking it up when they built it had to be an oversight. As such, it should be covered by the cost of the organ itself, and I can't imagine that was cheap.
Guys. John’s no dummy. He knows exactly why this is significant. His instrument just became a modern tool. Of course he’s excited. The ability to essentially have a “player piano” is hugely valuable. Notwithstanding the ability to use the organ for recording time. Heck. Just the ability to quickly transpose pieces is insanely valuable.
Yeah, one of my local places just got a fancy electronic organ, and one of the features that the organist likes best is the "player piano" so he can either let it play itself or record accompaniment to play along with. It's weird to think about an acoustic organ doing that, though.
This organ had the built-in midi recorder and a transposer for decades before this video was made. ..this is NOT new technologiy. .... . what was amazing is that no one believed that a midi-in instrument would respond to midi-out commands from a PC...
@@johnigoe1705 in the previous video they said this particular organ was installed in 2016, they only used a few of the pipes from the previous organ so no it did not have midi for decades as it has not existed for decades

I like how people who keep saying he lost his job at 7:15 dont realize that's the look of someone in complete focus wondering what the heck he could use this for in the future. Im guessing he has probably run into the situation before where he wanted an extra set of hands to do something amazing and he just found them.
I think they didn't plug it in by default because most organ players don't know what to do with it, but are afraid some guy will come along with a computer, plug it in and replace them. I think it needs openness on both sides. An organ player who is willing to get involved and also share his knowledge about the operation and the instrument, and someone who is excited about the technology and interested in how an organ works and how it is controlled. Then they can indeed combine both and create something even better.
This is already brilliant, but imagine how much better results you could get by actually making MIDI files specifically for this setup. I wonder if John, now that the possibilities have opened up to him, is going to start experimenting along those lines? Just think what someone like him, who is intimately familiar with the organ, how it works and what it can do, could accomplish! Think of the music he could make!
I dare say John could play Bohemian Rhapsody much more appropriately since he knows the organ so well, and the building's response. But I would love to see him work out things that, despite their octopus-like skills, human organists just cold not do - that would be really exciting :)
@@mumblbeebee6546 That whole organ console is just a giant midi controller..because it's just the sensible way to do things. all the stops and expression pedals are most likely CC commands the issue is the builder will be the only one with the real midi map of the instrument and what CC numbers are what stops and couplers. So when you record internally it just records a midi stream including the stops and swell controls With the documentation of the midi map people could compose for the organ directly.. Quick plug if you're interested in pipe organs there's some really good physics simulations as midi instruments and one of my favorites is aeolus.
I think that a better way to use it would be to have a midi aconpanment and have a organist playing the lead. It would be an awesome performance to see.

In the end we all are children at heart, we just like to play around with our toys and have fun. This does open up some nice options for the organ the limit on organs has always been the human factor with this midi input you can totally bypass that and create faster or very complex pieces of organ music unique in his kind. I cant imagine that this has not been tried or dune before ..
Well it's not that no one has done it before. I've seen people do this on home made organs - it's just not been done on such a huge instrument probably because it takes the human out of it. I would guess most people that are into organ music wouldn't come to a concert played by a laptop
@@TankleKlaus yeah but the laptop doesnt has to play the organ alone. You can maybe put a background loop or something on one divison and play by yourself on the other divisions. Little did they realize that all 9 divisions have their own MIDI channel. The channels weren’t tied to the keyboards or pedalboard. You could have 9 unique parts & sounds running at the same time, not just 6. The 3 divisions (portions) that aren’t explicitly tied to a keyboard have a switch (‘coupler’) that connects them to an existing keyboard. These are called floating divisions.

John discovered a new way to do things on that massive machine! I've never seen someone so open to something so crazy as midi-controlling the organ. This opens new avenues and possibilities. Crazy!
My church has a much smaller (2 manuals) electronic organ. Record and playback is built into it, no need to plug in a computer. The MIDI out is permanently (more or less) connected to a midi sound generator box that adds more sounds than just the organ stops you can see.
Yes, I have played organ-equipped pipe organs for at least 20 yhears, and the midi ports are ALWAYS there... I hope the church did not pay for the technician to activate the port that should have been activated when it was installed!

I can imagine someone who's learnt to play such an incredible instrument could easily overlook Rob's interest, like "who's that guy anyway ? Some random musician making videos on the internet ?"... On the opposite, John has always been keen on sharing is knowledge and passion. And he is seen here sharing the joy and excitement of Rob, experimenting something no one has tried before. This is what real musicians are about. They are so dedicated to music, they love it so deep in their heart, that they're not making it a matter of ego. And that's what made this video even more enjoyable to watch for me.

This video, having come back for like the 8th time in the past 18 months, is one of those rare cases of being a video that manages to draw you in completely and entirely. The technical curiosity to chase this idea of feeding midi into the organ, the problem solving and desire to push on despite it not functioning, the absolute awe when it first works and the majesty of hearing your own (Rob's) music in a fresh and interesting environment. Playing with this new and fun idea, getting Necrophagous and testing a pipe (hehe) dream about it sounding like Bach, giggling at Super Mario and then the utterly awe inspiring, triumphant but sombre Bohemian Rhapsody. The man helping you was definitely a lover of music, so willing to experiment. Truly awe-inspiring, both hearing the organ and also his willingness to expand his musical horizons. Truly the mark of a great musician.
But you might ask, “Why midi out?” Several years ago Richard Elliott wanted a certain sound in a piece of music he was performing on the LDS Conference Center organ for a Christmas concert. They didn't have a rank of pipes for that sound, so he opened a midi stream to a sequencer and the output was played over the speaker system and augmented what he was playing with the regular pipes. The results were incredible, and it was still totally him, just with a sound he would not have otherwise had access to.
I love how easy going and how pleasant the pipe organ player was with the problems and issues. Very patient and genuinely seemed interested in helping Rob in his YT video.
Next time (if theres a next time), try using a binaural recording technique/microphone. That would give you the feeling of "being there" (if you listen back trough headphones) that you mention the separation gets lost in your songs. Maybe the concept of binaural recording as itself for a new video to explore and play with, using a band around the microphone for a surround music theme. Have a look at it

You can record the true sound of this place using a binaural audio microphone. The video titled "Hear New York City in 3D audio" does an incredible job at explaining this and I'm dying to hear the true power of this instrument. Please like so he can see.
Why has nobody liked this :( literally the only thing I was thinking that whole time
@@QuinnHartmann I just posted the same above..

It might be MIDI SysEx that is used to control the stops rather than CC, either way, it would be fascinating to see the MIDI output that is produced when changing stops.
The man embodies the word "flummoxed"
Oh, absolutely no doubt the stops could be controlled with SysEx commands! If the organ console is that modern and implements MIDI, I'm sure they allowed for external control of the stops. You can essentially do that with the registration pistons under each keyboard already. It's how organists change "patches" so quickly. They set up the stops, then save them as a registration on one of the pistons. These consoles are amazing. They often have couplers between manuals (keyboards) so one manual can play pipe stops from another manual, or the pedals. It's super cool stuff. 😊
The best part is that it did! Look at the stops at 11:00!

Every Pop/Rock and Metal song is basically classical music with other instruments. I'd recognize the Pachebell-Song matchup, so many songs are based on this chord progression!!
Classical is very different from metal. Not to say one is better but they are so very very different, even on a organ.
Different, yes. Admittedly so. However, some schools of metal are more directly descended from Classical/Baroque music.

I hate to say, as an organist, the midi ports are ALWAYS under the stop boards.
and even then, mechanical keys are always preferable to digital ones. the latency just sucks the fun out of it
Yes, I have played organ-equipped pipe organs for at least 20 yhears, and the midi ports are ALWAYS there... I hope the church did not pay for the technician to activate the port that should have been activated when it was installed!
Honestly, the most amazing thing is the look on the guy who "knows everything about the instrument, and how to get them most out of it" is experiencing an on going epiphany of how his horizon has been expanded exponentially. just freaking awesome.
Studio Engineer: Rob, what do you want me to mic up?
Rob: a FREAKING BUILDING
Remember how we did that wax recording? It's gonna be like that but different.
Not studio engineer, sound engineer lol. This is a bit larger than a studio
Rob, you made a friend for life! If you ever compose a piece for organ(or let Adam Neely know he can) John will surely help, and we'll get some fantastic performances! Nice one! I'm so glad you persisted with the MIDI question.
jesus christ, Rob Scallon literally seems like the nicest guy ever.

The sound guy, in the background, head in his hands, racking his brains to figure out how he's going to mix this down to not blow the speakers of every person who tunes in to this.
Ya
The amount of joy on that man's face the entire time just makes it worth it.
The organ is an instrument of all superlatives. Its size, complexity, versatily, history...
Hearing the interstallar sound track on this would be absolutely insane
Haha underrated joke right there
No- the original Doom soundtrack and then the Doom Eternal soundtracks.
For what purpose? The interstellar soundtrack was already made with organs.

It's soo freaking awesome that John is so willing to share this amazing instrument with you. A lot of people would be hesitant to allow anyone to even touch the organ, let alone play with it in a new creative way. He's so knowledgeable about it and it's history, and it's super cool he is willing to share this amazing creation with the world and allowing you to try this.
Edit: WOaaahhhhh, even MORE amazing of John!!!! The fact that the midi stuff wasn't connected or ever planned on being used, would have been a roadblock most people wouldn't have worked past. This is soooooo freaking awesome that he had the engineer/mechanic come in and wire things up the right way to make this happen. This is incredible. John is such a great guy. Big Thanks to John for having the passion and creative aspirations to see this through with Rob.
I agree
I totally agree too. To my knowledge most organ masters would not allow this to happen. And most definitely would not call their technician to wire the midi input.
Like a true musician! That tells me he have a love for music not for materials like the organ
A very poignant and present reminder of just how significant the impact Queen had universally in the reactions of everyone there.
Thank you Rob, thank you John, thank you everyone who made this happen, thank you Freddie, you're dearly missed, this was truly magical
Man, to be able to hear BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY on the organ in person must have been an ETHEREAL experience. Man, I would have LOVED to be there and let the music vibrate it’s way into my soul. What an incredible experience.

I see organ music, I click. The sheer level of range and customization on one of these is staggering. I love it.
Wow organ pipe sound argumentation via a midi out for a real pipeorgan? That's a story to archive
