Is there really any other reason to wire a midi into a building-sized pipe organ?
@@austinmartin6918 Yes Usually we use midi to control other instruments or to expand the amount of stops that are accessible to the instrument.
The organist immediately playing with the stops to find different sounds had the *exact same energy* as Andrew Huang playing with his modular synths.

Organs are one of the first forms of synth! Essentially you're just playing with different harmonics and waveforms depending on the design of the pipes!

@@AA-gl1dr exactly!
As an organist, that is a necessary step in playing a piece. The instructions will say stuff like Swell: 8’ Reed, 4’ Flute and you have to find what fits best and put it on a piston for later.

Eh, we're usually pretty chill about letting people use our organs. They're meant to be played, and good ones are rugged enough to last for hundreds of years under regular use. You're not gonna break them by playing them, and we're more than willing to let you experiment.
A lot of us got into organ because of the enormous number of possibilities they have, so seeing this stuff as a classical organist is pretty cool. And the added benefit is that videos like this spread the organ to a wider audience, which it definitely deserves. Cheers!

Rob is crazy good
It might be MIDI SysEx that is used to control the stops rather than CC, either way, it would be fascinating to see the MIDI output that is produced when changing stops.
The man embodies the word "flummoxed"
Oh, absolutely no doubt the stops could be controlled with SysEx commands! If the organ console is that modern and implements MIDI, I'm sure they allowed for external control of the stops. You can essentially do that with the registration pistons under each keyboard already. It's how organists change "patches" so quickly. They set up the stops, then save them as a registration on one of the pistons. These consoles are amazing. They often have couplers between manuals (keyboards) so one manual can play pipe stops from another manual, or the pedals. It's super cool stuff. 😊
The best part is that it did! Look at the stops at 11:00!

Little did they realize that all 9 divisions have their own MIDI channel. The channels weren’t tied to the keyboards or pedalboard. You could have 9 unique parts & sounds running at the same time, not just 6.
The 3 divisions (portions) that aren’t explicitly tied to a keyboard have a switch (‘coupler’) that connects them to an existing keyboard. These are called floating divisions.
I grew up around pipe organs. My grandmother was a master pianist, and organist. She unfortunately passed away several years ago The organ in this video is the best sounding organ I've ever heard. If you've ever been to a cathedral and heard The organ there you have an idea how powerful and rich sounding the organ in this video is. To hear toccata in D heard on this gave me goosebumps. It is and always will be my favorite piece of music by Bach.
You can record the true sound of this place using a binaural audio microphone. The video titled "Hear New York City in 3D audio" does an incredible job at explaining this and I'm dying to hear the true power of this instrument. Please like so he can see.
Why has nobody liked this :( literally the only thing I was thinking that whole time
@@QuinnHartmann I just posted the same above..
Those microphones aren't particularly great for dynamics though. The more ideal setup in this scenario would be to have 2 decent mono mics with a few feet of separation. Then you still get the stereo field similar to binaural and better dynamics.
Wouldn't reach anywhere near the same feeling. Neither those microphones nor youtube would capture the full range made by a pipe organ. A big part of their "power" comes from sub sonic frequencies with some of the largest organs (quite possibly including this one) going into deep into single digit frequencies.
They would still do this organ no justice. Yes, it would be better but Organs create a music you feel in your chest. Not your head

John discovered a new way to do things on that massive machine! I've never seen someone so open to something so crazy as midi-controlling the organ. This opens new avenues and possibilities. Crazy!
My church has a much smaller (2 manuals) electronic organ. Record and playback is built into it, no need to plug in a computer. The MIDI out is permanently (more or less) connected to a midi sound generator box that adds more sounds than just the organ stops you can see.
This video, having come back for like the 8th time in the past 18 months, is one of those rare cases of being a video that manages to draw you in completely and entirely. The technical curiosity to chase this idea of feeding midi into the organ, the problem solving and desire to push on despite it not functioning, the absolute awe when it first works and the majesty of hearing your own (Rob's) music in a fresh and interesting environment. Playing with this new and fun idea, getting Necrophagous and testing a pipe (hehe) dream about it sounding like Bach, giggling at Super Mario and then the utterly awe inspiring, triumphant but sombre Bohemian Rhapsody. A very poignant and present reminder of just how significant the impact Queen had universally in the reactions of everyone there.

Sure they would probably not do this in Saudi Arabia. As a side note, this isn't actually damaging the organ you know. It's still there.
@@goodtogo2876 How is it disrespectful? This absolutely monumental engineering challenge of an instrument was created because we, as humans, collectively acknowledge the incredible importance of music to connect us, to bring us joy. By extending the capabilities of this instrument beyond what a single person, or even the most synchronized orchestra, can play (which was the original thesis of the organ), we are not only respecting it, but going that one step further in honoring it's spirit.
Rob, you made a friend for life! If you ever compose a piece for organ(or let Adam Neely know he can) John will surely help, and we'll get some fantastic performances! Nice one! I'm so glad you persisted with the MIDI question.

Earthquake on approach
They gotta open this as a service: email them your midi files and how you want it to sound, they record it with good mics and send back the wav files. Could charge some good money for it, I think there'd be a market
Good luck with the mixing lol
hiqwertyhi I’d definitely utilize that service
Especially with how no one is going to church currently,
If there is a market for such a service, why can't you just have an organ player play your song and have the sound recorded?
Soundrecorder won't cut it though, you'll need a ton of mics all over the room. But yes you could hire a player as well I guess. Would take more time though as they have to learn the parts.
The organ is an instrument of all superlatives. Its size, complexity, versatily, history... I can imagine someone who's learnt to play such an incredible instrument could easily overlook Rob's interest, like "who's that guy anyway ? Some random musician making videos on the internet ?"... On the opposite, John has always been keen on sharing is knowledge and passion. And he is seen here sharing the joy and excitement of Rob, experimenting something no one has tried before. This is what real musicians are about. They are so dedicated to music, they love it so deep in their heart, that they're not making it a matter of ego. And that's what made this video even more enjoyable to watch for me.
I think a big problem with Rain also was the (in comparison to the church's length relatively slow) speed of sound, cause it definitely ruined that neatly timed delay.
The solution might be to adjust (i.e. time align) the playback within the Midi file or rather the DAW accordingly. A similar thing is done with delay lines in huge venues all the time ... but on the other hand ... you'd have to define where in the building the sweet spot (acoustic point zero) is supposed to be.

If you got one of those stereo ear style microphones they use for ASMR you could probably capture the effect you had in the room, at least for headphone users.
you might get some of the space and direction, but it would be nothing compared to the real thing, especially considering they didn't have recording equipment optimized for the room. Maybe you can get pretty damn close to the real thing with professional recording equipment and headphones, but it would never really match the live sound. Not whith the distance involved in such a large, live room and how it echoes about so much. You can feel the low notes of the organ through the pews you sit in, through your feet.
I think these pipe organs are some of the greatest sounds people can possibly make. The cathedral is the body of the instrument just as much as a violins body.
@@AshBarkPerson At minimum you'd need full surround sound to really capture the way the sound travels (since you're dealing with an instrument that rings out from all around the room, not just in front of you), and I can only imagine the difficulty in capturing the various quiet overtones and reverberation without the louder pipes completely blowing out the recording. Being able to feel the sound is more down to your speaker system, as anyone with a subwoofer can attest to, but trying to capture that powerful sound without losing detail? An engineer's ultimate test, or perhaps their worst nightmare.

Apparently, yes
bromie - is it awesome: “yes”, is it Bach: “no”. Everything Bach did was so full of structure, form, and voice leading (the dude could IMPROVISE a 7 part fugue!!). Metal is awesome, but is built with entirely different goals and cohesion. Not that there isn’t some great counterpoint going on in some metal, just different (and Bach was a genius at the highest .01%, very seldom seen in history, so there’s that...). Listen to some Bach, he’s pretty awesome (I might recommend the Glen Gould ‘82 Goldberg Variations recording - freaking awesome!)
Nothing like Bach. Bach has finesse and counterpoint. This chap's noise is noise.
lowstringc man you clearly haven't heard math metal. You're missing out if you like classical. Listen to Protest The Hero - Kezia and come back. I want to know your thoughts
@@lowstringc I sometimes wonder what Bach would play if he knew metal was a style. :-)
oh god this video just gives another weapon to metal elitarists
It’s crazy to me that a tiny little connector buried under a desk controls an instrument the size of a room.
Building
@@bloodvue BIG Building
Well nuclear silo exists so
What about a VR setup, like a dummy head with a cardioid in each ear?
well its not just a connector, if there is a midi port it means that the organ is prepared to play midi.
so yeah its funny play a huge organ with the pc but its nothing special on this one....
When you made that organ play Bohemian Rapsodie my eyes begame wet, like Freddy was singing it to us from heaven. What a wonderful tribute to this remarkable group of people ❤️❤️👍👍Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful video with me.
I truly believe this is just a bunch of musicians just seeing what they can actually do and how to use this massive and gorgeous instrument in any new way they can and I absolutely fucking love it
Studio Engineer: Rob, what do you want me to mic up?
Rob: a FREAKING BUILDING
Remember how we did that wax recording? It's gonna be like that but different.
Not studio engineer, sound engineer lol. This is a bit larger than a studio
I love that John is an enthusiastic instrumentalist not a stodgy curator. He hears a crazy idea and doesn't shoot it down because it's not traditional but instead says, "That'd be awesome"
Ok, if someone was able to learn the limits of what you can do with this stuff, I'd imagine that you could throw some insane, super powerful sounding concerts.
Because I saw at some points those buttons can move on their own so you could go insane with charting.
Rob, we need more organ content! It's too good
Once COVID is over, you need to sell tickets and do a show so people can hear this thing live!
And/or, you can come to some live organ concerts and hear some contemporary music :)
That would be a reason for me to go to church :-). I really love the organ "cover" from One. It just sounds so cool and impressive, even on headphones. I think I'd pay to hear that live.
Guaranteed this guy was so juiced to let Rob try it out because he had this in mind... wonderful way to take a venue like that and monetize it. It’d have to be such a cool experience to hear your music or music you love played there. Surely worth tickets IMHO
That sounds pretty rad tbh
Just go to the church it's free lol
I like how the guy just started his phone calls with “ so we’re making a RUclips video and we need to use the midi for the organ”
I was thinking the same thing… He just picked up the phone and said… “We want to wire A to B… Can we do that?” That was just so cool because you have to put his query into context… This is a multi-million dollar $$$ instrument that he wants to “tinker“ with… Many kudos to this organ master!
When you have a multi million dollar organ you tend to get 24/7 365 service calls....
@@bubbyshome1794 but you also tend to have only a few people with the knowledge to solve it
@@nicholasmattera6802 I'm shocked that the church isn't excited about this too! Imagine being able to play when the good organist isn't in town!
And that dudes answer was "Yeah, it's right next to the INTERNET connector."
That thing has an RJ45 plug, aka Ethernet networking.
Please tell me it's plugged in.
Wow 🤩 That was so incredibly cool! And I just absolutely Loved how the organist was so fearless and embraced situation !
I think as a musician, Rob is living his life at best!
Imagine going into the church and suddenly *mario castle boss music plays*

Guys. John’s no dummy. He knows exactly why this is significant. His instrument just became a modern tool. Of course he’s excited.
The ability to essentially have a “player piano” is hugely valuable. Notwithstanding the ability to use the organ for recording time.
Heck. Just the ability to quickly transpose pieces is insanely valuable.
Yeah, one of my local places just got a fancy electronic organ, and one of the features that the organist likes best is the "player piano" so he can either let it play itself or record accompaniment to play along with. It's weird to think about an acoustic organ doing that, though.
This organ had the built-in midi recorder and a transposer for decades before this video was made. ..this is NOT new technologiy. .... . what was amazing is that no one believed that a midi-in instrument would respond to midi-out commands from a PC...
@@johnigoe1705 in the previous video they said this particular organ was installed in 2016, they only used a few of the pipes from the previous organ so no it did not have midi for decades as it has not existed for decades
For the church, financial opportunities of this discovery are huge. They have a building scale organ with modern MIDI functionality.
Wow, truly gods DJs. Such an amazing dedication on both sides, and so cool that you're turning new tricks on that organ!!
I love the organist he is such a nice person :) Genuenly made me happy. You should have asked him what his favorite song is and played it for him!
I just picture the nearest couple of blocks are just like: "oh, Rob scallon is back at it again."
Truthfully - This just helped out that church a HUGE amount. I have run AV at several churches - and the number one thing that goes wrong - the Piano or organ player is sick or can't make it. Now - he can just program his laptop and train someone to run the midi file for him is he is gone... that is huge! Not to mention, I'm sure he could now program duets that are impossible to play with just one person. This opens up huge possibilities for them - so cool!
My thoughts exactly. My father pastored at a small church and if the organist got sick at the last minute, we were in a pickle.
@@wushock92 were u ever in a cucumber?
He probably had to pay hundreds to call out the guy to hook up the midi so id hope it was worth something for it.
@@wushock92 ay, PK Mafia! when my father was in between pastoring positions, we went to the church that most of our family went to, and it had an electric organ. The organist is older, as many are, and frequently had Sunday’s where he’d just not be able to play, when he had practiced all the songs the day before and was normal. This method will probably help out if that were ever to happen again...
@@Vanlifecrisis Honestly, given that the interface was there, and the plugs were mounted in a handy (if well hidden) connection box under the keyboard, this was obviously intended as a feature of the organ. Not hooking it up when they built it had to be an oversight. As such, it should be covered by the cost of the organ itself, and I can't imagine that was cheap.
Well, this is freakin' awesome. I mean a human is great an all, but now you've given this guy the equivalent of infinite hands, with the ability to push infinite keys for any and all divisions of time. I am 1000% enthralled...
Rob Scallons videos always manage to make me smile, its so wholesome seeing people genuinely enjoy their lives in a world full of passion-less monotony.
The world needs more people who have the will to do things like this.
I want to hear the Marble Machine song on this organ now
yes, this, so much this!
Martin Molin would love that!
I'd also love to see Rob interview Martin. Might be tricky with them on separate continents, though.
Jared Black I was thinking this the other day!
YESSSSSS!
@@jaredwblack Social distancing, am I right?
I want to hear this play one of those midi transcriptions of human speech. Like I really, really want to hear that.
It wouldn't sound good since the organ cannot play sounds very quickly and abruptly. Everything would become a big hazy sound.

I like how people who keep saying he lost his job at 7:15 dont realize that's the look of someone in complete focus wondering what the heck he could use this for in the future. Im guessing he has probably run into the situation before where he wanted an extra set of hands to do something amazing and he just found them.
was just thinking the same, Id love to know if he went home after that and got super creative!
Personal Biased Opinion. He asked and God gave! And in this case they (God) gave Big TIME.\
After this revelation I hope that they kept him on.
@@peterkelley6344 I think they just had a guy come in and wire the Midi. Don't really need to ask God for that one
I think they didn't plug it in by default because most organ players don't know what to do with it, but are afraid some guy will come along with a computer, plug it in and replace them. I think it needs openness on both sides. An organ player who is willing to get involved and also share his knowledge about the operation and the instrument, and someone who is excited about the technology and interested in how an organ works and how it is controlled. Then they can indeed combine both and create something even better.
Nah, I am sure he wouldn't lose his job, but this just makes it so much easier!
This is awesome and the willingness of the gentlemen to learn something new about his organ. Not to mention the open-minded approach he had.
This was so cool. The MIDI on the organ. Amazing how it actually worked.
