Agreed. Metal music is one of the lowest forms of expression. Any Neanderthal can "play" metal. Adams aura of complete disgust and contempt when Rob was showing how to make a metal song was palatable. I especially enjoy how both of them treat it like the joke that it is.
When Rob was playing the sax for the first time he was actually playing a C# (No keys pressed) but he made it sound so flat with his lips that Adam thought it was a very sharp C.
"That was my first take...shall we just keep it?" Good advice indeed. Having been with a few people in the studio who insisted on doing multiple takes (pre DAW comping!) where the original idea worked, but just went down hill each and every time they tried a new take...! Even in my (less than professional) occasional recording/producing role, i ALWAYS got someone to think they were doing a dummy run for levels, etc, but always recorded it, just in case it needed to be pulled out of the bag after the above process. Worked many times!

For those unaware, holding down no keys gets you a C# but Rob, with no developed mouth muscles, was playing disastrously flat, giving the sharp C. Lipping down made the note even more flat.
Watching this one, I now understand why Adam thought of 'I love you mom' for his lyrics. I like that there's a common lyrical thread running through these two pieces.

I would say in metal both guitars and bass generate a block of sound so they act like a single instrument if that make sense, so its individual importance diminishes, but 90% of the presence of the strings is still on the bass
@@frostythesasquatch Its kind of meant to be a joke.. bass is important in all genres, without it metal and rock especially would feel very naked in the low end

You can note that he has bad intonation, fingering, and other stuff, which while it will not ruin making good music will be noted as a weakness of the player when they try stuff that needs to use more of those things.
@@spracketskooch I mean, kind of. I don't play sax either, but know the basics, and basically Rob was doing the equivalent of playing open strings on a guitar, except there is only one string, and 1 extra fret he figured out. While it's fairly impressive what he managed to accomplish with those 2 sounds, there's absolutely no versatility in that playing method. I'd more ascribe this to his skill as a musician. There's a joke about how a musician just needs 2 random noises, and make a song out of it, and Rob definitely proves that part true.
Wow, "I don't know how to play the sax" is one thing, but I kind of expected Adam to at least know which buttons Rob's fingers should be on. Trilling was a great idea, though. That was my go-to for "I don't know wtf to play in my solo" in middle school jazz band. Works wonders.
The crossover nobody asked for but everybody needs! ...well, okay, somebody probably asked for it somewhere sometime. But I like my overdramatic version of events. Also if for some reason I ever need to write something jazzy for some future project, Adam and Rob's interplay here will probably be the most immediately useful kind of source for me since there's not only a hands on demonstration but a heaping helping of what *not* to do. XD
Judging by what Rob usually plays, I feel like he would've done a better job at (and would probably enjoy) playing the more modern style of jazz. But this is cool!
Maybe, but it's much more complex on a lot of the instruments, isn't it? If you only have an hour and a half, I think this sort of basic old jazz makes sense.
This is more easy to do in 1 hour tho, so i think it was the right choice mayhaps. Also its like a crash course in the basics which I think was better in terms of learning probably
@@NZsaltz Yeah fair point! But I feel like modern jazz in the likes of artists such as Ari Hoenig, Hiromi and Kurt Rosenwinkel would be right up his alley. Rob has played some pretty advanced complex music on the channel. (Even if it its not jazz)
Also he got Adam to play in the newer style of progressive metal in the other video and not traditional metal music like Iron Maiden so I was assuming the same thing was gonna happen here.
@@LMVtron1 Adam absolutely did not play prog metal. What he did was metalcore, a modern but simple genre, probably the easiest to play of any metal genre barring drone. Iron Maiden would've been more difficult except for maybe the double bass drumming.

Absolutely loved this. I was so struck by Adam's explanation of how jazz drums are built up, it had never occurred to me before that the kick wouldn't be the foundation! I had seen Rob in other youtubers videos before, but I saw Adam’s metal video and i had to come over and watch this! You two hilarious and so fun! Would love more vids like this and keep up the great work!
That reminds me of when a guy from my university offered me to join the jazz club as a bass (guitar) player, even though I'd very much been just a punk and metal player until then. Challenged me in a lot of interesting ways.
This is my favorite thing Adam has made since I saw the metal side of this collab. So great to see y'all teaching each other the essential elements of the genres. 11:55: This is my favorite thing Adam has said. As someone studying jazz, this was very informative. Very advanced outside playing by Rob on sax.
Seeing how well you do with most instruments, maybe sax is one to spend some more time with as it's more of a challenge, you may find a bigger reward. Nice to see a practical example of implied harmony.
Wind instruments probably take longer because you really need to find the right embouchure and everything for yourself. The fundamentals are the same, but everyone's mouth is a bit different. It takes more experimenting imo.
Rob your friend explains things beautifully. I have the knowledge of everything he’s saying but talking about it so smoothly and casually is a gift. I wish I could have the patience to sit and explain but most people don’t actually admire or have the want to learn music. I feel like a lot of people want to goof around and bash on the instrument instead of value and respect it. I get it it’s all about fun but there’s gotta be a fine line to where people can understand music is beautiful and it cost 💲. It’s like I find it hard to let people play in my nice things that I worked so hard for and then they come in wanting to bash things and potentially break something I can’t afford to replace. Then I look like the mean one. Good job on being an absolute joy for teaching and watching. I know rob isn’t newb(:
you need some Adam Neely in your life, brother. He talks about complex topics in music all the time and very well explained. Listen to the other replies. Adam Neely's channel is a must see for anyone who claims to love music and everything about it. From its theory, to its cultural and social functions and phenomena, really fascinating stuff.
You do sound like someone that provokes the reaction he is getting. But hey, I am 90% sure about being wrong … internet comments never tell the whole story.
It's really weird to see someone struggle with sax for me. I learned clarinet for years and was able to just pick up a tenor sax and roll with it. Of course now that I'm learning guitar, I'm having just as much trouble with that as Rob did with the sax.
There's just such a world of difference between strings and brass/reeds! Even as a singer (who presumably understands something about breathing and about using the mouth/lips to modify that air/sound), I've had a hard time producing more than a couple notes with any woodwinds or brass instruments.
I feel for Rob. I played alto sax back in middle school, and while I wasn't good, I still was able to hit the notes I needed to hit. A few years ago, I wanted to get back into playing the sax, but this time, I wanted to play a tenor, and I absolutely sucked ass at it. Like you would have thought I never picked up a sax in my life lol. I had moved to playing guitar and a little bit of keyboard/piano, and I just completely lost any concept of having the correct embouchure.
@@rjr6912 when I went from sax to guitar it was pretty frustrating having to start from square 1 again. At least the piano I could basically play because it just is the notes.

Agreed. Metal music is one of the lowest forms of expression. Any Neanderthal can "play" metal. Adams aura of complete disgust and contempt when Rob was showing how to make a metal song was palatable. I especially enjoy how both of them treat it like the joke that it is.
@@blazejecar I couldn't imagine working with brain dead metalheads.
When Rob was playing the sax for the first time he was actually playing a C# (No keys pressed) but he made it sound so flat with his lips that Adam thought it was a very sharp C.
18:18 "I found another button half way through" made me laugh so hard
😂
#metoo
I’m a tenor sax player and I about died. How mashing keys sounds that good is mind boggling
Pulling the neck out to tune😭
"That was my first take...shall we just keep it?" Good advice indeed. Having been with a few people in the studio who insisted on doing multiple takes (pre DAW comping!) where the original idea worked, but just went down hill each and every time they tried a new take...!
Even in my (less than professional) occasional recording/producing role, i ALWAYS got someone to think they were doing a dummy run for levels, etc, but always recorded it, just in case it needed to be pulled out of the bag after the above process.
Worked many times!
That's clever! It lowers the blood pressure lol! My mom wanted to show me a piano piece she had just found "mastery" over (she's a total beginner) so I excited said yes, let's hear it, take your time and don't mind mistakes.... and she was playing and saying things like "that's weird, it went so well yesterday..." Performance anxiety is basically its own instrument lol
Yeah man. The second you're "doing it for real" you think too hard about doing it right instead of just DOING it right
INCLUDING TODAY
LOL I love you guys, this collab needs to be a whole ass show on a regular basis, just you two stumbling over genres together, bring in a third person as an expert. This shit is GENIUS.
Seconded!
If they put that on Netflix, I‘d extend my subscription.
yes please! Adam and Rob do.... Punk Rock! Pop Ballad, Soul, Folk!
The only person that could be the ‘expert’ is Rick Beato. And after every explanation he has to say, ‘like that’.
As a bari sax player, I’m lightly impressed with Rob’s sax playing
*nintendo-smash the sax* "I found another button halfway through"
im surprised he was able to get a sound out
@@ArsenalTheProtogen as a tenor sax player: I'm not. I maintain that tenor is probably the easiest of any of the single reeds. Just slap your face on and blow and something will come out. Will it be good? No. But it's certainly more reassuring than bursting a blood vessel on a more resistive smaller reed. Bari reeds will move even easier, but it requires a lot more air to support. Tenor is right in the sweet spot
@@stevedotwav none of that matters because literally none of that is the difficult part for any lifelong musician like rob. its not the first time hes blown a reed instrument whatsoever. once youve tried a few you should easily have the intuition to pick up the rest easily.
Please do more collabs together, the chemistry here is insane 💛
Absolutely! And seeing people try out new things like this is a lot of fun
Rob really should be in a future sungazer song, I feel like the energy he brings to his music really matches up to a lot of sungazer music. I especially could see him playing on a song like DRUNK (ruclips.net/video/0BRxDp2u02U/видео.html), Sequence Start (ruclips.net/video/of_BPHHHY1w/видео.html), or even possibly THICC (ruclips.net/video/SaaUpqf4kJc/видео.html).

Adam doing metal was a nice one as well!
I love Rob's incredulous "really?!" Shows how much learning is going on
this video feels like two programmers talking about an obscure feature of some programming language/API and prototyping stuff and i love it
Rob playing sax to the tune of adam being disappointed is hilarious
Yeah...the "That not was on purpose" strat on faking your way through have worked before :)
It's cool to really see how passionate Adam is outside of more scripted scenarios
I anxiously await the upcoming Neely Scallons album. Featuring Rob on sax, accompanied by Adam on drums.
As someone who played in a jazz band for 6 years, I learned so much about these two videos about arrangement and composition that I never picked up playing the saxophone
Saw Adam's metal debut first. This was great to see musicians venture in genres they are unfamiliar with. Gives new appreciation for other styles.
And both of you look like you had too much fun! That's what it's all about.
I know Rob's channel since 2014, and Adam's since 2016 and always wanted this kind of collab, I'm soooo happy !!!!
Thank both of you for your incredible music work
There’s no words that can describe how happy this makes me to see these two in the same place ❤️
I can't express how much pain I was in when Adam said "yeah that's a C just really sharp" when Rob had no keys pressed on the sax.
I nearly fainted when he looked up how to lip down down the note.
For those unaware, holding down no keys gets you a C# but Rob, with no developed mouth muscles, was playing disastrously flat, giving the sharp C. Lipping down made the note even more flat.
I play sax for close to 20 years and I died a little inside.
@@delirium3181 well, pretty sure this was Rob's first time playing Sax. And Adam isn't a sax player either, so he is def not the best to teach it.
@@aringrey it was his second time
You mean it was as if neither of them knew anything about playing sax? Oh wait..
They didn't even try to look up a fingering chart!! Hahahahaha
Watching this one, I now understand why Adam thought of 'I love you mom' for his lyrics. I like that there's a common lyrical thread running through these two pieces.
Jazz explained in a wonderful way!
Is this a breakdown of djazz? I am ready for my ego to be broken again.
Edit: I love seeing Adam emote and have fun like this. He's always so stoic in everything I see him in. It's kind of a breath of fresh air seeing him laugh and smile.
I know, right? I love seeing him have fun with some of his musician friends, it's like "holy shit, he is actually human and can let himself go and show emotion" 😂
it's so funny to see how overwhelmed adam looked playing with double kick and how unimpressed rob looks with the brushes
I love how in metal rock etc. bass is almost an afterthought but in Jazz it's this God everyone looks to for guidance
JESUS CHRIST ALONE DIED FOR YOUR SINS & WAS RESURRECTED FROM THE GRAVE! HE IS ALIVE & COMING BACK VERY VERY SOON WITH JUDGEMENT (THESE ARE END TIMES)! PREPARE YOURSELVES, TURN FROM SIN & RUN TO JESUS!
HE KNOWS YOUR PAIN & TROUBLES, HE WANTS TO HEAL & RESTORE YOU! TALK TO HIM LIKE A BEST FRIEND! ASK HIM TO REVEAL HIMSELF TO YOU & HELP YOU TO BELIEVE IF YOU DOUBT! DON'T WAIT TO CRY OUT! NO ONE IS PROMISED TOMORROW! HE LONGS FOR YOU TO INVITE HIM IN, HE LOVES YOU MORE THAN ANY PERSON EVER COULD, HE CREATED YOU!
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."-John 14:6
"But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven."-Matthew 10:33
“For the wages of sin is death (hell), but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”-Romans 6:23
Tbh i think in most GOOD music everybody is looking towards the bassist and drummer for guidance
I would say in metal both guitars and bass generate a block of sound so they act like a single instrument if that make sense, so its individual importance diminishes, but 90% of the presence of the strings is still on the bass
“…And Justice For All” proves how unimportant bass is in metal.
@@frostythesasquatch Its kind of meant to be a joke.. bass is important in all genres, without it metal and rock especially would feel very naked in the low end
lmao I love Rob playing a C# on the sax - I mean, technically Adam was right, it's a C, just really sharp
It would be cool to hear Adam and his buds actually do this properly considering there are some really nice notes in the tune. And same for Rob to do Adam's metal song in full death lol. The tunes deserve it!
As a metal guitar player who recently started to find joy in listening to jazz music this video is incredibly interesting! And I feel like I even learned something about jazz while being perfectly entertained. 👍
"i don't understand how to get any other notes," he said, while having no fingers on any of the pearls. i died inside, fantastic video
Adam teaching Rob how to jazz: it's berklee time
Rob teaching Adam how to metal: guitar go brr
I play rhythm guitar in a bigband and it was very fascinating watching Rob figure out how boring guitar is in this genre haha
Idk man jazz guitar can be great in like a gypsy jazz thing or on a ballad vibe w no piano
The whole sax part had me CRYING with laughter I love both these guys and seeing them together is like the best kind of music nerd energy
Absolute banger. Robs ability to jump into basically any instrument(besides sax) and play it with heart still astounds me! You’re a true jazzer now
Well, I think he also put heart on the sax part, like, no technique whatsoever but lots of heart.
@@gab_gallard I cannot disagree with this 😅
He f*ckin' KILLED it! Intonation and totally wrong hand position/fingerings aside, that's incredible that he managed to work the sax so well
If it works, can it really be considered wrong?
You can note that he has bad intonation, fingering, and other stuff, which while it will not ruin making good music will be noted as a weakness of the player when they try stuff that needs to use more of those things.
@@iantaakalla8180 I think the biggest weakness to note is that he is not a sax player lol
Works wonders.
i love how hyped adam gets with the piano melody. that's what music is all about
Rob seems like he would pass out doing actual rhythm guitar, he cannot be contained lol
XD
Rob picked up the sax and started blowing like he's covering Moon Hooch
I love how much joy your getting out of adapting your knowledge to new stuff
Just Adam trying to breakdown the sax, just keeling over in the corner was amazing
Rob looks so sad while playing the drums lmao
9:45 "VOICE LEA-DING!" That cracked me up
Same
Don't I know you?
It's funny to see Adam holding Rob back for this whole video after seeing Rob egg Adam on for the entirety of the metal video
I love Adam losing his mind at 12:40 over a lil silly piano riff, then rob bringing the curtain down to start an ad then disappearing
I KNOW that made me chuckle so much
I learned so much about Jazz music watching this. I think it's a briliant way of making music. Adam is such a good teacher and Rob is such a talanted musican!
Now time for the ultimate test. Both of them write and record an orchestral piece of music.
With Alex Moukala being the "teacher"!
Adam studied composition, and he does compose, not fair really.
Adam already did this on David Bruce Composer's channel and it was great
With Twoset Violin
The sax track sounds like a wheezing asthmatic goose with bad phlegm and then Rob clears his throat into the mic 🤣
You forgot the most important part of playing saxophone - always blame the reed
The rough camera work with the master class level still shots is really making this an amazing video
The energy and passion of these two are so complimentary! The cross over we all needed
Absolutely loved this. I was so struck by Adam's explanation of how jazz drums are built up, it had never occurred to me before that the kick wouldn't be the foundation!
The discovery that the tritone forms an integral part of both metal and jazz was fantastic - such an obvious pairing for the videos after all!
Rob/H Jon Benjamin jazz collab album confirmed
I'd love to see the unedited hour long version of this and just see how truly chaotic it was
"I'm missing you, mom." Had me dying. It's so sweet but also it was a good song too 👍
The sax part was hysterical.
Thank you guys. This and the sister metal video are the best thing I've watched on screen for WEEKS!
Adam getting incredibly excited over that super simple riff at 12:24 is hilarious. Jazz!
This is my favorite thing Adam has made since I saw the metal side of this collab. So great to see y'all teaching each other the essential elements of the genres. 11:55: This is my favorite thing Adam has said. As someone studying jazz, this was very informative. Very advanced outside playing by Rob on sax.
I’m extremely late to this but the fact that rob missed the keys on the sax is hilarious to me
Seeing how well you do with most instruments, maybe sax is one to spend some more time with as it's more of a challenge, you may find a bigger reward.
Nice to see a practical example of implied harmony.
Wind instruments probably take longer because you really need to find the right embouchure and everything for yourself.
The fundamentals are the same, but everyone's mouth is a bit different. It takes more experimenting imo.
Wind instruments are really not forgetting. A week without practcing and you‘ll regret it if you want to sound good on it
Rob your friend explains things beautifully.
Bro how haven’t you watched Adam Neely before
That's Adam's entire channel
you need some Adam Neely in your life, brother. He talks about complex topics in music all the time and very well explained. Weird theory concepts, explaining what's happening in some songs, culture in music, how music influences us in a lot of contexts, writing techniques and a bunch more. Very interesting channel even if you aren't well versed in theory (saying this as someone who only has the basics)
First time ever using a woodwind it's tough lol.
Adam: _"I'm so sorry for all my musician friends."_
Rob: _"I'm not!"_
Lol gotta love Rob, this is such a wonderful collab. 😁
Omg, love seeing the Intuition Shirt!
They way Rob looks up to Adam when he explains things is oddly satisfying
Heyo
Hey kayjay!
Its probably the best part of this channel, the way Rob allows the masters to explain themselves so he can learn from them. Seriously admirable.
Hey everybody
As a lifelong (since 5th grade haha) clarinet player, seeing someone like Rob struggle with embouchure was great. Finally, there’s something musically that I, after years, am better at than Rob after 5 minutes!
Because for me, it’d take years to even be mildly proficient at stuff that he picks up in days… or minutes. But seriously, I love this channel. When I need a good video that dives deep into art, I come here!
Been a jazz fan my whole life but this was like a crash course in jazz theory! I learned SO much theory and structure from this!
love the shirt, shout out intuition. Rob always representing!!
This is a scam, don’t respond
It’s so fun to watch them get pumped about the other one coming up with something. Truly just happy to make music with each other
