The Beach Boys too.. Brian Wilson was a genius in the studio.. The well known ones are Good Vibrations and Heroes and Villains which were recorded in sections in different studios with different arrangements and then the tape was physically cut and spliced to the previous section.. There are literally hours of sections from Heroes and Villains which didn't make the cut! If you haven't before, you should check out their unfinished album SMiLE.. some of that stuff is wild!

I had an opportunity to record on a large-format console in a room with two tape machines, and wound up using the second machine as a tape delay (as a send-return effect.) On my return channel, I actually sent it back to the tape machine at a volume less than unity to create a "feedback" delay so it sounded more like a typical echo!

The "time warp" effect was definitely cool. I believe that's initially a shuttle control for quickly scrubbing to different passages to hear so you can edit properly. That machine sounds absolutely beautiful. Thanks for posting.

So you grabbed an acoustic guitar but chose to distort your voice??? Duuuuuuude... saturated acoustic guitar is one of the best things about using tape!

This reminds me of all the weird and wonderful sound effects the BBC Radiophonic Workshop used to do for an old British comedy series called the Goon Show in the Fifties. Lots of speeding up and slowing down.

besides that this put a big smile on my face, it was also super educational when it comes to the effects I use so often in my DAW. Especially the thing about flanger, and digital versus analogue distortion is super nice to know!

    Reverse: Black Mirror
    Speed up: Italy

Tremolo: (that song with the lyrics “need a hero” in the chorus- new age rock not the old one
    Distortion: Too weak
    Delay: Funkpop stuff

8:07 would also work with a source that you can't change the speed of, as long as there's two 'passing' each other. So playing something from Protools to the taperecorder, then playing it back with the tape starting slightly earlier, and then slowing the tape down, would cause one flange when the sounds pass each other. Just one, but it'd be a flange :D.

Double tracking was the original chorus so I wouldn't say it's a work around. Our chorus pedals these days are just deceptively different which makes it seem like a completly different effect process.

The sheer joy you show in this video is one of the reasons I'm so glad I found this channel. You're without a doubt an amazing musician but the fact that you have such passion for music (even though I hate using that word) and that you're *legitimately a good guy* and have such a great sense of humor really set you apart. I've never used Patreon before but supporting musicians and people who bring such light and joy to the world is my exact definition of what "patronage" should be, going back all the way to the Renaissance definition of the term, when leaders realized the value of culture, art, and music. I'm going to feel very good about my five bucks a month (edit: I guess I didn't know how much control you have with Patreon. Five bucks up to twice a month! Woo!) knowing that it enables you to keep doing what you love and enriching people's lives the way you do. Shine on.
