I wonder how long it’s going to take for everyone to figure out about this dude who is batting so far out of his league that it doesn’t even make sense. Pick any single thing going on his videos - sound or visual - and it’s cooler than anything else that could be made with a warehouse full of expensive, vintage equipment and with a style and elegance that a major production house couldn’t properly imitate. Your videos get the inspiration flowing in a way that not many other things do and I’m going to keep telling you how much I enjoy your channel.
The market is so niche and the amount of moving parts involved would force them to make ridiculously expensive boutique units. I wish they were still around too, but I don't want to see them at $1000 for a shoebox recorder.

I can tell a lot of work went into this video, the editing, the waveform comparison. The EQ of the tapes. People that talk about tapes are normally.... well.... different. Its refreshing to have someone point out its beauty and not "WOAH check out my heckin lo-fi chill beat maker!!!"

Dude you’re genuinely one of my favorite creators and I just found out about you the other day, I just bought a Yamaha mt8x and have been obsessed with analog, you have such an amazing style and I love what you’re doing. Please keep doing this man. I have a Salvation Army literally plopped right next to my apartment you’ve inspired me to check everyday
Just ordered my first cassette recorder because of this vid, I grabbed a Tascam Porta 07 and a stack of tapes. Can't wait to experiment, thanks so much for this. And I second all of the other comments praising your channel and production value. I feel lucky to be a subscriber so early. You'll be at 100k in no time if you keep this up!
Every single thing I've heard from this channel has the absolute warmest analog sound with great stereo separation. I know the way its recorded/ mic'd up has a big amount to do with it as well, but the overall end product is so tasty.
Means a lot! After years and years of trying to “perfect” a mix it’s only when I stopped actually trying (out of exhaustion) did I ever finally achieve any result I thought was good!
Thank you for drawing the public's attention to the alternative record and, as for me, the real sound. your channel is a storehouse of similar and mostly useless thematic channels. I love old-school analogue gear. I have been painstakingly assembling an analog studio for 8 years, it was very exciting..
Great video! I was fortunate to have purchased and used brand new cassette multitracks in the late 80's and early 90's. The best I owned was a Tascam 488 that I synced via FSK to a Roland MV30 sequencer/sound module. Your creative video has almost inspired me to look for another 488 or a 688 (still have the original 7 and 8-track masters safely stored).
Great video! I enjoyed it a lot! Cassettes aren't a bad format at all, it depends on how much money you want to invest. it is actually a format that reached "analog perfection" few years before it fell into oblivion
For some reason your guitar and beats tracks helped my ADHD. I downloaded the video and trimmed those part to listen to later. Thank you sir, you are a genious! :D
Mate, I'm so happy to find this channel. Btw, I'm also tapehead, playing and recording my RTM, Basf, Agfa, Zonal tapes on my Revox B77 (factory restored, brand new). Collected over 200 reel tapes over the past 5 years (10.5 inch reels, with various designs and window shapes). So I understand your passion, keep making music and videos. This is art (at least for us) :D 🙏Please, make a playlist with all these instrumentals that you used in your videos, You have such great taste in music 😍
I'm old enough to have had an original Sansui WS-X1 6-track cassette recorder back in the early 90s. It was sweet, double tape deck and everything. Bouncing down, flipping for backward stuff. I was more creative with that thing, an Alesis SR16 drum machine and a Juno 106 than I've ever been since. Now going for around £800 on Reverb. Also had an ADAT 8-track, which was less interesting. Wish I'd kept them both. I did keep my original Akai S3000, which is similarly vibey for re-sampling. keep it up man, your channel is super inspiring!
Oh those are legendary! I too wish I hadn’t sold some important pieces in my life. But the future is bright. Things always come back around when you least expect.
I was able to get a library of congress C1 tape player for $20 on FB Marketplace because the guy who had it said it wouldnt play right even with the power cable. For some reason, when the battery in the machine is dead, it will not play the tape right even on a power supply. I took the battery out and it worked just fine. Also changed the belts. Similarly, i also found my tascam 424 mkii 4 track recorder. It was like $22. It wouldnt start but all it needed was a new capacitor. Changed the belts and it works perfectly. Already used it as an instrument and recorded a few songs on it. So fantastic. This guy is right, you can just get lucky. Keep trying.
This video is awesome! I know the video is sponsored by Recording The Masters. They are awesome and all that, but for those of us who like to hunt for royaltyfree samples and soundclips, nothing beats the meat quite like crusty old home recordings on cassettes. You know, the ones that aren't of vinyls or the radio. People used to record the weirdest things, go thrifting and make some techno! 😅
Amazing! I just went on a trip to Colombia South America, to visit some relatives (I grew up in Canada pretty much my entire life), and some older cousins who are musicians there gifted me a TASCAM Porta 07 Ministudio 4-Track Cassette Recorder (it looks very used but it powers up and works!). This is video is an inspiration for me to get this thing going and trying it out. I'm going to see if I can order some of those RTM tapes on Amazon!
Rambling comment: I'm relatively new to tape, but I've been getting heavily into 4-track cassette and now I'm pretty much hooked. It makes me weirdly sad though, thinking about how there are no new cassette machines being made (or reel-to-reels, which I'd love to upgrade to if I can ever afford one.) There's a kind of dread knowing that this way of making music is considered obsolete and won't be possible fairly soon. Skeptical people online always say 'just use a plugin, it can sound the same' well even so, my Portastudio never interrupts me because of plugin license issue, there's no CPU latency, and because I only have a few pieces of hardware I never get stuck deciding how to do something. A Portastudio is actually much easier to use and more practical than a DAW in many ways!
You are speaking my LANGUAGE. Now let me suggest that there is nothing to fear, nothing to be sad about. New machines will come. They already have in the pro world. Look up Mara Machines. The more people that embrace this world, the more likely it is for the revival to take effect.

I've been working on a custom mellotron/tape echo style unit that instead of open tape loops we use a library of standard cassettes, or my favorite, the nice fat wide "8-track" style tape, which is already a huge loop where the cassette is end to end.
I make up the lack of phantom power on my Yamaha MT50 by feeding the master out of a Mackie Blend 6 into the inputs of a machine. Makes it somewhat less portable but it sounds so nice going through 2 preamps before hitting the tape
@@vvundertone Well I’m so new at this that I wouldn’t be able to tell haha, but it works wonders for my needs regardless. Thanks for making these videos, they are always enlightening and inspiring
Beautiful video! Again, all your tracks during the video sound amazing, focused, spacemen, probably thanks to a meticulous mixing process... it would be great to have some tips. Ok, subscribed! :)
Really like your channel. I’d like to a get cassette deck. I had one and a bunch of cassettes from the 90’s, but they were all destroyed by hurricane Sandy…
I have that exact same harmony acoustic guitar your dad found on the street! I've looked online for what model it is but I haven't been able to find anything exactly like it
Have you ever used google image reverse search? That might help you get the model. I'd do it but my guitar is put up somewhere already. Its a cool vibe right? I enjoy its dark thud. Nice alternative to the popular super bright jangly (borderline annoying) acoustic sound we hear on everything.
As an obsessive animal, I feel qualified to say that RTM’s FOX is nearly equivalent to TDK’s D formulation of tape. My deck has adjustable Bias and they even bias up very similarly. I haven’t tried their “Type One,” but I imagine it’s similar if not just an updated look with the same tape contained within.
Ive got a pair of m7's and f96's as well! I like plugging into guitar amps and using it for distorted vocals, and the f96's are great as OH's--despite not being level matched. Try em out with pedals if you haven't all ready.
I am jealous. I don't know what happened to my other m7! I have the case and everything. One day I hope to find another pair. I have not tried with pedals yet def on my list of experiment's!
I'm really bad at naming things. If I can find the original logic session I'll export it. Thinking of making a second channel that is all dedicated to the music I make.
Amazing video! Thank you! Question from a rookie. What's your process for taking your tape masters and converting them back into digital for streaming, replication, etc?
This is a topic I will soon cover in greater detail. Long and short of it is playing the tape in real time back into the DAW same as if I'm recording another instrument. Then a little touch up EQ, noise reduction if necessary.
Here's a little advice to keep in mind when using Type 1 cassettes to record on those 4 track and 8 track portastudio recorders. These machines are made to use High Bias Type II (chrome) tapes so that means the pre-magnetization is higher than for type 1 tapes. And that means the higher pre-magnetization causes a stronger / louder noisefloor on Type 1 tapes and also a little more dull high frequencies. Using DBX or Dolby C (depending on what the machine offers) does help of course. But the sound will still be a bit more dull than with type II tapes. A little bit of EQ play is needed but if you can deal with the caveats and use it in a musical way, embrace it :) Also, certain Type 1 Tapes seem do handle the higher Bias and recording volumes pretty well. I haven't been using the RTM tapes myself yet (as of september 21st 2024) but the Maxell UR series (the more current productions) seem to handle all that pretty well and much better than very old Type 1 tapes that are very light brown. The darker brown Type1 tapes have a little different formula and if you find some NOS Maxell UR 60 or 90 tapes from the past 12 years or so, you can definitely use them. In a stationary Tape Deck the Tape type detection is usually happening automatically (the tape deck checks the record-protection notches on the upper side of the tape. Type 2 have wider ones) and selects the proper pre-magnetization. Some also let you change the bias manually. Really helpful on tapes with 3 recording heads so you can instantly HEAR the effect of the bias change in real time till you find the optimal setting. *edit because typos*
Great intel. Thank you. Now I want a 3 head deck to try this! My issue with type ii when I use on the fostex is they distort in a unpleasing way. I feel that I can push the type 1s harder. But there is a time and place for all types in my opinion. Even the super messed up old tape would be good for certain synth sound effects I'm thinking of trying.
@@vvundertone Oh 3 head machines are freaking awesome and save you the time of recording and playing it back just to get it digitized again since you can basically do it all in one go. :P Videotape machines in the Broadcast segment are basically ALWAYS like that. When i was working at a postproduction house years ago i saw that the Betacam SP (which uses Dolby C Noise reduction btw), Digital Betacam and even the HD variants HD Cam and HD Cam SR all showed you what you just recorded, while you were recording it. Which mainly has a technical reason so you can instantly see if a tape has damages or if the recording looks proper or not. So yeah this "third head" also exists for rotating head drums in Videomachines. I personally only have ONE Cassette Deck with 3 heads and it's a Sony Tapedeck that i once gotten for cheap on a Fleamarket. Normally people demand absolutely insane prices for 3 head Tapedecks. Way more than they should. I hope you find one for a good price. :)

I've been working on a custom mellotron/tape echo style unit that instead of open tape loops we use a library of standard cassettes, or my favorite, the nice fat wide "8-track" style tape, which is already a huge loop where the cassette is end to end.
I would love to see/hear this thing in action. Especially with 8-track what?!
I make up the lack of phantom power on my Yamaha MT50 by feeding the master out of a Mackie Blend 6 into the inputs of a machine. Makes it somewhat less portable but it sounds so nice going through 2 preamps before hitting the tape
Great ingenuity. And I can imagine the color is tremendous.
@@vvundertone Well I’m so new at this that I wouldn’t be able to tell haha, but it works wonders for my needs regardless. Thanks for making these videos, they are always enlightening and inspiring
love your stuff keep it up !
TY, indeed brother!
Old school tapes, new school knowledge!
The best of both worlds. 🤍
1:18 fuckkn the music is actually good... Was expecting some lame things.... Damn thanks to heavens that I found this channel
Beautiful video! Again, all your tracks during the video sound amazing, focused, spacemen, probably thanks to a meticulous mixing process... it would be great to have some tips. Ok, subscribed! :)
That means a LOT. The music is always first and foremost. Yes mixing videos is on my list. Would love to break down more.
Really like your channel. I’d like to a get cassette deck. I had one and a bunch of cassettes from the 90’s, but they were all destroyed by hurricane Sandy…
I am hoping you stumble upon a pristine machine in your immediate future.
RIP Panasonic thanks for the memories!!!
💔
Super well done!! Nice to see a PRV1 in the rack!
Good eye! I love that thing. I want more old school rack spring reverbs. One day!
Wow great video,
seems like a lot of fun
Using tape keeps it entertaining for sure
That was really good!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your content😊
Thank you for taking the time to watch, truly means a lot.
what a lovely channel :*
Love it. Had a cassette obsession but sold everything, Need to get a Lil something fun to vibe with
I hope you find a lil companion piece to crunch and pitch up to your hears desires.
Really amazing video 👏
Fellow obsessive animal concurs.
Fantastic video, thank you so much for putting this out. The vision plan for thrift store digging was spot fucking on!!!
My pleasure. I hope it helps you locate some magic yourself!
@@vvundertone 💯 magic all around us, just have to tune in
Another great video!
🙏🏼
Yoooo mad respect my guy 🫡
🙏🏼
this intro music and underneath is beautiful
Best compliment I can get! 🙏🏼
I need more of that low and slow beat at 9:50! It's such a journey. Any chance we can listen to that somewhere?
I'm really bad at naming things. If I can find the original logic session I'll export it. Thinking of making a second channel that is all dedicated to the music I make.
the music in this vid is insanely good wtaf
Aye! Thats what really matters. Thank you greatly. Music first!!
Always killer content, dude!
🙏🏼 appreciate ya
Just brilliant !❤
Bravo 🙌

Dope suit.
Thank you! I found it in an old kick drum. Great muffling but better attire.
This is beautiful
I am thankful you enjoyed it
