Alpha is 1000% more terrifying than Negan. He was willing to work with you and he looked out for women and kids and you ain't getting that with Alpha.

Comic Governor was on another level than tv governor, but I loved both. They definitely toned him down for the show.

So things we learn about Beta in this episode:
1/ He was in a band after seeing the picture of him with his face scratched out and I'm going to say the one in the happy face shirt was his brother who was also in the band.
2/ He is about 6'4" after seeing him stand under the 6'8" clearance sign.
3/ His band was a country group seeing as the was "Walking After Midnight" he and Alpha were humming.
4/ The padding rooms tells me this could be a rehab centre and with Beta using this place as a shelter tells me he may have had a history here and may have been a patient at one time.
any thoughts about what's up with his face? I haven't read the comics after negan so if you have, don't answer^^
my first thought was he has a cleft lip, but seeing him again in the later shots, his mask is revealing lips and nose and eyes, so can't be a major disfigurement. then I thought maybe he has a tattoo on his forehead or something, like a swastika. but seeing him in his cowboyhat, not sure if that's too big of a stretch to link him to nazis (wouldn't really matter in the apocalypse tho, he'd be just as bad as other bad guys). so my last guess is some kind of scar, or burned face, if there is indeed anything on his face.
But the padded room could also mean it's a mental institute and he has had some mental problems, and/ or had his buddy in there and couldn't leave him alone. so nothing's wrong with his face per se, but his mind gives him a reason to cover it. that face issue reminds me of shizophrenic people and he seems like someone with a deep psychological issue
Imho Beta doesnt have a disfigurement of his face but as said above his face is recognizable because hes a celebrity of some notice.

@@matthewsimpson2162 If you read the books you would know Beta is almost 7 feet tall leading some to believe he was an NBA player but in the TV version they are leaving hints at a music career. If you watch FTWD, there was an episode in this past season where Daniel is trying to save some records and he drops them when they are attacked by some zombies. After they flee and leave the records behind scattered across the road, the camera zooms in on one where it has the singer on the cover and he is wearing a cowboy hat and has a beard like Bets's leading some to believe it was him. As for looking up the actor, already know Ryan is 6'4" because if you were following the talk when he was first hired for the role, people who have read all the books mentioned how he wasn't tall enough and guys like Kirkman said that they were going to use camera angels to make him appear taller. So the height is something that is still being used in the show and has something to do with who was before.

After this episode we can’t blame Carol for starting the war by being on the whisperer side of the border because Beta talks about the fire from the satellite being on their side and thats what makes Alpha want to go back. They probably thought the fire was from survivors that are on their side of the border so either way the war was going to happen. Wasn’t Carols fault though

In the comic it was just Glenn and Maggie should have killed Negan but what they are doing with him is because of Carl the show version anyway. That's why Carl saved Siddiq.

I have to say that Lydia grew up to be very intelligent, considering the environment she was raised in.
Siddiq totally has ptsd. I highly doubt he's a spy. He was left alive to deliver a message. Good villains never kill everyone because it doesn't deliver a message as well as keeping one person alive does.

I think when it comes to Alpha separating herself from the title as mom from Lydia is her recognizing her weakness is her daughter and if she is to keep her alive she needs to just see her as another member of the pack. If her focus was completely on being mom, we already seen how much trouble Rick got into when he made it all about his kids. Those who Rick treated as just another member of the group out lived Carl, plus, Alpha saying "don't call me mother" is another throw back to Carol when she told Lizzie the same thing and in the exact words.

Alpha feels like more than just a bad guy, she feels like she is actually evil. Negan feels redeemable despite what he did to Glen and Abraham

Negan was a charismatic dictator who tried to keep people in line with fear to control them, but he really wanted to integrate/exploit the vast majority of them into his army of minions. He would commit an act of horrendous violence against 1 or 2 people solely to keep order. He was only intimidating as long as he had his army of followers & he mostly delegated his dirty work via Simon & the Saviours. Negan did draw moral "lines in the sand" he would not cross (he wouldn't hurt children). Alpha has no limits. She is psychotic scary all by herself. She has no desire to incorporate or spare anyone, period. She feels no no guilt, no remorse, no regret. She feels no fear. You cannot appease nor negotiate with her. She has no moral compass, no pity, feels no mercy, & does not value human life (not even her own). She is cunning, acts quickly without thought of consequences. She is completely unpredictable. Her soul is dark & damaged beyond repair. I' d rather go 10 rounds with Negan & Lucille than have Alpha notice me... across a canyon... via telescope... from Mars!!

The most chilling thing, is that this isn't the first time we've seen someone in Alpha's situation on this show before.
Looking back, it is genuinely alarming at how close Carol was to becoming like Alpha. Alpha is what would have happened had Carol not stayed with Rick's group post season three and season four.
It also has me excited to see the interactions the two will hopefully have.
I remember there being a theory a super-long time ago that Carol was actually going to BE Alpha.
MinersLoveGames well I don’t see carol being as extreme as alpha because she was capable of empathy to others.
@@punctuationman334 Alpha was capable of empathy pre apocalypse aswell. It is what she had to do and endure which changed her. Carol very well could have been the same if she went through the same situations as Alpha.
I think Carol could never be like Alpha. Alpha was the abuser. She was messed up before it went down.
Carol was abused and Alpha was a abuser. I couldn't see Carol ever being like her.
Negan was neither a villain, nor was he evil. He simply had a vision of society in the new world, world where strength ruled. Alpha however has no intention of building a society. She's more animal at this point than she is human. This episode showed her losing the remainer of her humanity. It'll be interesting to see the coming war!
I'm enjoying the cult aspect of Alpha's backstory. She is very typical of a cult leader. She presents herself as a enlightened messianic figure, but doesn't abide by her own standards. Her Standards include do not love, Do not show emotion, and Beta is watching her begin to fall short. It will be interesting to watch this play out. Also, I want to see what happened to Beta's face, and how he wound up in an insane asylum.

I really believe that the place where Alpha met Beta was an Asylum of some sort, and he was a patient. His brother probably went to get him at the start of the outbreak, and somewhere along the way he was bitten.
The comic has the Here's Negan story that came out in some magazine and then released on its own. Wish the show would have incorporated it. I guess there's still time. Maybe one of the movies will be about Negan.
How fitting that they met in an insane asylum.

Nikki, you almost convinced me that Negan was scarier, but I still gotta go with Alpha. She is just not there. I hate admitting this with every fiber of my being, but Negan at least had some humanity in him. Alpha has nothing. Even her obsession with Lydia, isn't love. She's like Cersei in that sense. Their children are just an extensions of themselves, and nothing more. It's like the mentality of - "if I can't have you, no one will." Negan was scary to me in 6/16 & 7/1, but after that, he just became exhausting to watch. And, yes, it might have made a big difference for me if I saw how he got started. I wanted that a lot, and never got it. Also, I always felt that Simon was scarier because he was much more unpredictable.

I love seeing the back stories on characters. It's nice to humanize them in a way. It goes back to what has been talked about in the past, seeing other groups perspectives, and how they got where they are. I'm certain that Alpha does not see herself or her people as villains. Neither did Negan. The difference between Negan and Alpha is 1. Negan is/was bad, but not crazy. He was calculated and charismatic. He reads people quite well, and he can get in your head. He used force when necessary, but used other tactics if they served his purpose better. He was diabolical.
2. Alpha is crazy. She's not stupid, but she's not all there either. You can't anticipate or predict her moves. She's a survivor without regard to life in general. She is both a sociopath and a psychopath. She switches between the two. As a sociopath she is capable of emotion, although its toxic emotions, but that's where her twisted love for Lydia comes in. Then she switches to psychopath tendencies where emotion completely leaves her. That's when she becomes a cold-blooded killer.

We met Beta in a psychiatric facility, and I first assumed his friend was the one who was staying there. And it’s just occurred to me that maybe Beta was staying there too, hence the slightly aggressive and less conventional behaviours! Maybe they became friends in there together. I hope we understand that a little more as the season progresses.
One other thing I now know from this episode, and I know Nikki will absolute side with this on behalf of all mothers everywhere! “Alpha” made her own daughter stop calling her “Momma” because she wanted to make some scary ass dude feel more comfortable. You stopped your child calling you Momma because of 24hrs with a psycho?! Not like she was winning mother of the year anyway but still!

Maybe Im reaching, but 2 weird mouth highlights, 2 different characters, same epiode sticks out to me. Or Im just hypersensitive with 10 years watching this show! Lol😁

This was awesome! I think Alpha is more focused on massive retaliation. Negan was more focused on consolidation. Remember, “people are a resource!” He only wished to kill who he HAD to kill, and made a BIG show out of it. Alpha has no use for the communities, so she might be scarier because of the fact that she may not hesitate at wiping them all out!

Iv always wondered the same about why the walkers can't smells the whisperers with just a mask on but earlier seasons people had to cover themselves in walker goo to blend in with them.

I love your hair colour Nikki! I've been trying to get that colour myself but my hair doesnt want to take to it!! 😆 Alpha is just SO strange! It seems she does miss Lydia and have some kind of motherly feeling. The relationship between alpha and beta is also very strange. I think these 2 are very much still dealing with issues from before the apocalypse and havent been able to move on. It's also interesting that alpha said they dont have names anymore but both alpha and beta talk about lydia and Lydia's name is always used.

The woman who plays Gamma was the little girl in Hocus Pocus. She was also in Now and Then, Alaska, Ghost World, American Beauty, and others. She looks pretty much the same lol.
She's one of my fav. actresses, but you weren't really seeing her for a while. Also a childhood crush.

I loved the episode. Alpha and Beta are really neat and creepy characters. I actually care about them now. The whisperers and Alpha are definitely the best villain yet. They are psychological and just terrifying. Negan is a great character but he wasn’t this intense. He was just a physical enemy. Negan’s personality made him very interesting but the fear factor left after 7a. Negan was more human and definitely tried to be part of the community which made him very different. Negan’s power was manpower while Alpha is the unknown.
It's possible Alpha told Siddiq there were spies in the camps but if he calls them out there will be a bigger shitstorm than the heads on pikes. The showrunners have confirmed that Beta was a recording artist and it was his vinyl that Daniel (ftwd) dropped.
28:40 Steven states that Alpha does not cut deals like Negan, yet in the beginning he agrees with a letter regarding Alpha making a deal with Saddiq. Huh? I don't think Saddiq made a deal or that Dante is a Whisperer spy. Saddiq was just having a flashback (in a daze) and "appeared" to be focused on Dante's mouth.
There is a Negan back story in the comics. And I think i read that they are going to be doing it. Because it does come way later in the story.

Also, I read that there was an Easter egg on Fear as to who Beta is. After seeing the picture on the wall where the faces are scratched off, I can see where that just might be true!!

I really enjoyed this episode and I have to agree I like negan he was scary at times but also funny, but alpha is the most messed up and terrifying villain this show's ever had she don't play around, she creeps me out so much I never want to meet the actress in real life lol

I agree with Nikki on this, Negan is terrifying, he can play himself off as 'normal' at times, then go psycho. Alpha is just plain psycho all the time. You know where you stand with Alpha, Negan you just never know when he is gonna bring the psycho.....
I personally cannot wait for Alpha to realize that she messed with the wrong Momma. Our Carol will show her how a Momma bear works in the apocalypse!

If Dante is a whisperer spy he is new to the whisperers because Lydia would recognize him. But it is possible Alpha sent him to spy on Lydia just to make sure she is ok
I think it was Beta’s son or brother. They’re in a mental health facility so I guess his son was living there, hence the photo on the wall of them both together with faces scratched out.
He wears his son’s face, despite it not fitting. Much like Morgan used to wear the small armour plate from the kid who was shot during the melon delivery to the Saviours a while back.
My heart did hurt for Alpha seeing she had made Lydia a bed with protective branches all around it. I feel like she was trying to make it more comfortable and more like a home, trying to compete with the people she now lives with and win her daughter back.
Never seen Alpha scared of Beta before though, that was new!

Who's to say that the Whisperers would leave Alexandria, Oceanside and the Hilltop alone? How do we know that they (the whisperers) would not do something to force their (Alexandria, Oceanside and Hilltop) hand to either attack the whisperers or to draw them across the border so that they would have a reason to attack them. Also, in the first episode there was evidence that one of the whisperers crossed the border first (again, evidence of the whisperers possibly trying to draw them across the border).
Agree. I truly believe they were 'destroying' surviving communities along the way all this time but Lydia made Alpha 'backup' and try to find an actual REASON to attack these new communities they have come across because she doesn't really want to KILL her own daughter. She wants to be able to show her that these people are not BETTER than the Whisperers and that Lydia made a bad choice. She wants her 'whipping post' back... and yes I do believe, in a sick way, she loves her daughter.
