Building a Saxon House with Hand Tools: Timber Frame | Bushcraft Project (PART 3)

  • We continue building a bushcraft saxon house in the forest with hand tools only. This time we work on building a timber frame using woodworking techniques and joinery such as mortise and tenon. We use saw, hammer, knife and axe to craft wooden pegs to secure all of the joints in place. Firstly, we had to de-bark the logs using a drawknife. We then burned the ends of the logs to preserve them for longer and help prevent rot. This is an ancient wood preserving technique called Shou Sugi Ban. Using a shovel we dug holes to put the jowl posts in place. We cut tenon joints on the top of the jowl posts and then using a hammer and chisel we cut mortises into the wall plate or horizontal support beams. We also secured the ridgepole of the house with the same technique. With the foundations and timber frame now complete, the saxon house is ready for the roof rafters.
In Part 4 we will be securing the mortise and tenon joints together with wooded pegs. We will also be using the bark peeling station to create rafters for the roof. Hope you enjoy the episode! - Mike

It is a pleasure watching these building projects, been following since the Viking house. One thing I've learned in building and repairing (barbed wire) fenching is that wooden poles tend to rot first at ground level: where moisture and air concentrations are highest. Underground there is little oxygen, so the rotting process is slower, as is above ground, where water drips off. My advice would be to burn a larger part of the logs that make contact with the ground.

Watching you, your dad and your friends build these primitive structures is very enjoyable. Years ago my dad and I would daydream about doing this kind of stuff. Unfortunately he and I never got a chance to do so. I guess I'm vicariously there with you, planning and building. ;)

Massively laborious mega time consuming work....and probably the reason it is so wonderful!!! All that labor and effort are a major reason why you love the results. You hope I am enjoying the project? That is a massive understatement...I love it! And I love that you and your dad are working together on it. My dad is no longer alive...and there have been many occasions that I really felt a desire to "borrow" your dad for a while...I think he is a wonderful man. Keep up the excellent work!

Done with the hardest part! Famous last words! It is all hard! But worth every bit! Since I'm not there doing the work, it is easy for me to say! Ha Ha! I think this is a significant project that will inspire many to build their own Saxon House. If you don't nick, bruise, or other wise bang up your hands, you are not working! I don't feel right if I don't have something healing on my body! I have so many scars from working, I look like I have primitive tattoos! Love this build and Bravo Mike and Graeme for taking on such a project!!! More on the Viking house. Love the Pallet cabin and that wonderful stove! You are teaching how to live and survive like people did 100s of years ago! Thanxz

I'm thoroughly enjoying this. When I was little, I used to spend hours watching my dad make things. He used a sawhorse, a hand saw, mallets, chisels, etc. The sounds are really soothing to me. Amazing how much you can learn just watching. (Of course, no way my watching would necessarily make it possible for me to DO it. But if you've watched a great deal, it sticks in your head as to HOW to do it.)

Burning or charring the ends of the posts also hardens them! The American Indian as well as the Ancient peoples of the world used this for hardening the ends of their spears! It works quite well.
I'm enjoying this series as much as the Viking House build! I wish I wasn't disabled so I could do this where I live! It would be great fun and my Grandsons could get a workout and learn something, too!

Mortise and tenon joints were used by the Anglo Saxons, so you're fine on that front.
That slightly exposed end; treat it with sap or a bit of pitch. Saxons no doubt would have done something like that if exposed to the elements.

When you are drilling holes for a mortise, make holes next to each other as close as you can, only leaving a thin barrier between them; it saves a lot of time and effort on chisel work. Your tenons were excellent too :-) Have a great day!!!

Mike I love the way your dad turned the knife into a log bark peeler by sticking the tip into a ergonomic piece of a limb to create a handhold! Fantastic!!! Mike I will congratulate you on the stand you fellas made for bark peeling. If you made the height lower it would put uncomfortable pressure on your back as you bent to peel. Close to armpit height makes it ergonomic for your body!!!👍👍and have a pint or two on me!🍻🍻

    Hi Mike,
Hope all is well and looking forward to Summer. Can't wait for that and your Dad's uploads on TA Fishing through the warm summer months . His videos are a Staple and i can't wait for Graeme to get 200K. Really Special i feel and i hope you Celebrate that for him when it happens. He's the greatest. The quality of the filming and real life content is unmatched. Enough said really.
    Steve in Fife.

I love watching the builds you and your father work together, I wish I would have had that kind of relationship with my father. I loved my father, but he was raised to be hard on his son, so I would be tough. I got tougher than he would have wished for, and we grew apart. I think the only time he was proud of me is when I got drafted in 1970 to the US Army. Anyway he only reached out to me just before he developed dementia, by than he was no longer clear minded. Tough is over rated, caring is the path I wish for everyone else. Keep up the great content, love your camping, building, and cooking. Also love your fathers fishing video's. Keep up the wonderful work.

All that bark scrap tinder and kindling for days! lol Absolutely love the content you produce Mike. Absolutely love it! I do look forward to more overnight or multi-overnight adventures more in the bushcrafty style, but these builds are always awesome to watch. Never disappointed with your content. Well done brother well done!

I believe you should burn a bigger portion of the logs. If I am not mistaken its the part of the log that is in the ground but nearest the Surface that rots the quickest (depending on soil type and water/air ratio in the ground). Love your videos! They make me go into that creative and childish mindset that feels so liberating and fun

You are correct! My neighbor has a treated fence about a mile long it takes about three years and they rot at ground level ! On my fathers old farm the fence was put in with all locust poles about 150 years ago , almost all of it still standing !

The level of catharsis and pride that is achieved when I build structures like these with my friends and then seeing the end result is wonderful

Loving this project/series. You two are doing an amazing amount of manual, hard labor. I love the banter between the two of you and the fun you seem to have despite the hard work you are doing. Thank you for sharing. Looks like a lovely spring over there in the UK. Cheers from Flagstaff, AZ USA
