Building a Saxon House with Hand Tools: Rafters and Roof Frame | Bushcraft Project (PART 4)

  • Опубликовано: 13 сен 2024
  • We continue building a bushcraft saxon house in the forest using hand tools only. In part 4 we finish building the timber frame roof and build some rafters. We use log cabin notches to help secure the rafters in place. For each rafter, we de-barked the log with a drawknife to prevent bugs from breaking it down over time. This will help our roof to last longer. The bark peeling jig we made in part 1 of the saxon house build is really coming in useful now. I also made primitive pine pitch glue from the resin that was leaking from pine trees in the area. I melted the pitch down in a tin can over the fire, and then used the molten pine pitch or tar to pour over our exposed mortise and tenon joints. This will help to weather-seal the joints and prevent water and moisture from rotting them away. We also secured the mortise and tenon joints by drilling holes with a bit and brace and an auger, and hammering in wooded pegs. In Part 5, we will be building battening on the roof ready for the final roof material. We will also make a start on the walls. Thanks for watching.

    Great video again. Watching this series brought me new appreciation for my grandfather and father back in the 60's. They built the family 3 story A frame cabin up at a mountain lake, there only power tool was a chainsaw. I remember in the 70's peeling poles and logs with one of those draw knifes when I was 7 or 8 to build the added on covered front porch. (It was the 70's 7 year olds were allowed to work with sharp blades). Brings back good memories, thanks!

Woodstove insert in the giant rock fireplace now (only heat). Cabins all around the lake now (grandparents sold off lots to afford the cabin). Already in the folks will to pass it down to my nephews and nieces. On the mountain behind where my great grandparents homesteaded in the late 1800's.

    For anyone who wants to try the pine sap glue, heat the sap up but then stir in some ground up embers from a fire pit, it will make the glue flexible instead of brittle... Great video guys!!!

    • @ladyofthemasque
      @ladyofthemasque 5 лет назад

      It makes it less brittle, but it's not truly flexible until you add a little animal fat, such as bear fat. The combination of pine pitch, bear fat, and charcoal dust has been used for millennia by North American First Nations people to give a waterproof, lasting seal to their birchbark canoes, which are designed to flex with the rapids that the canoes pass through.

    The house is coming along quite nicely. Save all your chips and shavings in a pile or bag and set them aside, you'll have a lot of tinder for future fires. I have a wood burning stove and save all my scraps for just that purpose. Works wonderfully. Once the roof is up, the house will last a lot longer if you have a drainage system around the house draining water away from it. Keep it up, looking forward to more progress ... oh, once it's done get a hold of Dustin for a royal feast and over nighter in the house.

    Hello my name is Halfdan
    I have enjoyed many of your videos for a long while now and I just want to thank you Mike. I haven’t had the best luck with weather or timing to get out the in the woods. I live in western Norway so I don’t get a lot of sunny days, and the laws for fires are very strict. From apr 15. to Sep 15. it is illegal to have a fire in the woods. This gives me about two weeks of good weather bushcrafting before I have to use a gas stove. I am left feeling weak when I can’t bushcraft just a little bit. You really help me to escape this unfortunate situation. It’s a real life saver to have your videos. Thank you so much for your works and all my skills are thanks to you. Loving watching this and that you're doing it with your dad! My partner and i are making a gypsy wagon by hand, the same as you, as much as possible without power tools. I do have a suggestion, maybe you could saw the tops of the support struts (where the beams with the pine pitch sit on), so that they slant downwards? This would make sure any water that did get it, would run off, away from the joint. Thanks for great and interesting viewing!

    Give it a couple of centuries and I foresee some very puzzled archaeologists trying to work out why so many different types of housing are built in a village together. Great series, all of them.

    With regard to The notches they made with the saw for measuring purposes near the beginning, I asked my nine-year-old why didn't they just use a pencil? And he says, because that's not a handheld tool. Smarty pants. A new little bushcrafter on the horizon hopefully!

    After basically finishing the whole of the viking house, halfway into a new project, he finally makes a proper mallet. And here I was thinking he'd leave that for the one million sub celebration. (boi so excited for you to be getting there soon!)

    What a fun project! Wish I could be there with you! Just a quick suggestion? Where you have a peg joining 2 logs directly (as opposed to a peg going through a tenon), you can strengthen that joint by cutting slots into the ends of the peg before installing it, with the slots ending up an inch or so in depth below the surface of each log, and with each slot perpendicular to the grain of the log it's projecting from (so where the logs are 90 degrees to each other, so would the slots in each end of the peg), then after installing the peg, drive in small wedges into those slots to tighten the peg in the holes (like wedges holding on your hammer, ax and froe to their handles). So the slots and wedges would be oriented across the grain instead of with it, so they don't split the log. This would really lock in the pegs so that joint could not move, or squeak on the peg in the wind.

    I love watching your videos. I also love the bonding between the two of you. For this Saxon House I recommend that you do the wall weaving first before you complete the roof. It would be easier to do the weaving without having the roof in the way. Anyways great jobs guys.
