Building a Viking Turf Roof House: Roof Frame - Bushcraft Project (PART 2)

- We continue building the bushcraft viking house. Before we build the turf roof, we needed to build a frame solid enough to be able to take the weight of the turf. For this we used woven hazel sticks or hazel hurdles as they are called. I made a few small log cabin notches on some rafters so that they would sit flush to the ridge pole and support beam. These were then lashed to the timber frame. The hazel hurdles were then put on top and lashed to the frame of the roof. I have one side of the roof going down to the ground, and the other only half way. This is not just for aesthetics, it also allows more room in the shelter for a raised bed or storage area. In the previous episode I cut some logs up with the bushcraft axe and burnt the ends of them to help make them rot-resistant when they are in the ground. At the top of the posts I used a chisel and made some mortise and tenon joints to make the whole structure more secure. The frame still needs some form of purlin support and some wind braces, but the basic frame structure is now complete and ready for the turf roof which we will put on in the next episode!

Have you thought of putting a thin layer of clay over the hazel and under the soil? It might cut down on dirt sifting down later on.
Looking forward to seeing the turf go on. This is such a great experiment; also a great way to learn new skills and strengthen those you already have.
How is Emmy doing? Is she getting close to her due date? I forget when you said the baby is due...
You can hang pine bows from the overhanging rafters during windy days bruh. Love the vids and your dad. 🤠
sod houses a good old building material for just the roof i would suggest a 2 layer approach first layer sod down second sod up ;] i believe traditionally done that way here thanks for the video
hi, where can I find such a handdrill?
You guys should do a celtic round house next
1000 years from now, an archaeologist will stumble on this property, and have a nervous breakdown.
😂 that's pretty good 😂
Hilarious!
😂🤣✊🏼🧐👌🏼
@@marianfrances4959 I busted out laughing too.
Should build a little community of historic stye houses around one big communal fire pit in the centre
Yes that sounds great 👍👌👍
Why buy a summer house and pay tax? It’s better to build and go on a camping trip with friends
You could hire them out on weekends ; )
Watching anything and everything you do reminds me of my younger self. Now that I am older with kids, I miss doing this type of stuff. I guess I should teach my kids. Thank you for these.
Instead of using twine to bind up the timbers; you could, if you access to hides, cut the leather into strips, soak them, then use them as bindings. As they dry they will shrink and become extremely tight.
And Wow, your dad is so fit! GOOD JOB, boys. My dad passed at 92 years and I miss him every day. 💙
BTW I really enjoy seeing you chef friend helping out. Its apparent that he enjoys being there with you. It is nice comradeship. Great fun watching!
Dude! All of that weaving looks so good! I have seen walls and doors/gates made with that technique but never a roof. Really creative and awesome work! Can't wait to see the finished product man!
Your dad's great, I love him in the videos.
Great and powerful Viking !!! North American continent !!! I’m glad to welcome you! I haven’t come to your competitor for a long time and you often missed him, you and your magic hatchet, which you simply perform miracles))) I’m glad that you continue your fascinating and useful business (hobby) and of course with with great pleasure I will review all the video that has accumulated here on your channel during my absence. I wish you health and longevity. Sincerely, Michael Brown from Russia ...
This guy is so skilled, enjoyable video. I can understand why anyone would dislike this and go to the effort of making a dislike rather than just leaving.
Man I thought you were using the Halo theme for the intro there I was so hyped
I mean im still hyped for this new project but damn dude you had me for a sec there
Λ ChrisZPR Right?! Do you know what it is?
I thought so too! I want to know what it is, so if you know... Go ahead and hit me up?!
Looks awesome. Much bigger inside than I expected. What a cool little village you're building!
The Viking Leader : "Take him! I need an architect for my village!! and take his kuksa too!! 😁"
I have to say it: your channel is amazing, so different than others outdoors channels, this kind of series building ancient constructions is amazing. Keep it up. Greetings from Spain.
I like the looks of the woven hazel branches, would make a nice fence in a garden. With vines growing along it, would be great for privacy. Perhaps adding ivy or other climbing plants to the roof would help when turf is scarce?
Great to see you are actually doing Bushcraft and not just camping like a lot of other RUclips’s! Nice work mate, Keep up the good work 😊
it is as always great to see your dad more or less enjoying time out int eh woods with you.
I love how witty and funny your father is. Classic 'dad jokes'.
Great second vid Mike and great to see Graham helping out. Can't wait to see what it looks like with the turf roof. Keep up the awesome vids.
Making good progress there Mike and Dad! Thanks for sharing! 👍😁
This stuff always makes me anxious to keep seeing the progress
Nice work can't wait to see it all roofed up
I would just like to say man I wish we had the rich soft soil you all have over there. All we have here in Virginia is clay and rocks. Enjoy the videos!
Definitely look forward to your videos
Thanks for Part 2 , Mike. The structure is larger than I thought it would be, which is great. Love the woven roof panels concept. My suggestion pre turfing would be to lay a long branch, the size of your roof supports, on the woven roof side of your bottom stakes. In other words, as you face the structure, to your left BUT on the right side of the stakes that keep the woven roof in place at the bottom (closest to the Saxon house). This would securely hold the bottom turf 'row' in place. On the other side, the same could be done, at the lowest roof end. Just lash that long branch in place. Love the show. Nice to see your Dad again. I can't wait for Part 3!
what a Great Dad you have there hope all is well You should sell your videos to schools etc and make your self some money
You guys had me hooked with the Viking house. Would cool to build a village around the fire pit.
Love every second of this. Another great upload. Thanks
Ive been watching the TA family for a while now, and I have to say. I truly enjoy watching the interaction between you and your dad. I hope my son and I still have the same thing in 15 years, when he is your age. You've given us some great ideas for the outdoors! Love the builds, all pine and cypress here. Cheers from Florida!
Cheers Joe!
Nice idea Mike/Grahame. Will be useful.
These houses are cool as hell! I want one
Those panels look gorgeous great work love the bits you come up with
You guys are rocking it, keep it up
I love that axe! Still snowing here in Alberta! 🇨🇦 still loving that forest...best of luck...waiting on that baby!! 😉
Loving this so far Mike. Great build.
Oh that is some nice wattling on the wall pannels
Love all the building series you’ve been doing and the bushcraft
can't wait to see how the new shelter turns out.
Mike: that was a nicely done saddle notch with an axe, yet! And SUDDENLY, we have finely made woven panels made from hazel: the best you two woodsmen have ever produced.
Excellent look forward to seeing the turf roof interesting, great work on building the shack awesome 👍 👌 👍
Thank you for another awesome video chap always enjoy watching them and getting some groovy ideas for a little project I'm working on myself, I saw you at the bushcraft event in burton earlier this year and you gave me some pointers then to cheers chap.
Great video as always! Looking forward to it being done so I can watch your overnight/feast!
Good Job, Mike!
You both have such superior bushcraft skills. I've sure learned a lot. Definitely good fun!
Great structure, thanks for sharing. Take care.
Really impressively done. Thanks!
Might as well start calling this the TA no? I love where this is going and would really like to see more building around the same spot in that forest. It looks so great
There needs to be a christening of the Saxon house like the viking house. Involving drinking lots of ale out of horns. Maybe with TA fishing this time
Thank you great job love it
Your doing amazing work on this shelter
Another great video mike! I always watch a video of yours till the end because it's so fun to watch you build from scratch. keep up the good work. :).
If you knock in some splints Both sides of your Hazel ribs You can make extensions to the Length of your roof Rafters you can weave in the rest of your Hazel Great Channel thank you for sharing Your knowledge and expertise
Awesome job guys God Bless keep sending them awesome videos
Interesting idea. My mind says to put the first layer with clay like you did with the other hazel weave (wall) to prevent the rain water from soaking through the soil. But I am interested in seeing your idea to its conclusion and the final results during a rain. Great video and your dad being there just warms my heart. P., L. & H.
Nice work you 2 !!!!!!
Enjoyed that! Thanks!
Looking good
If you use Fern beneath the Soil and Turf, it will be more Insulated and Waterproof.
At least that was what my Grandfather told us when we did build our Turf roofed Cabin in the Woods roughly 40 years ago.
I've enjoyed the party to as well, a lot of work but great to see the result, special frame construction but as you say why not doing something else just to try different things to getting more experience and knowledge, thanks for sharing, Taro
Awesome project! Looks good brother!
Another great video Mike. Can’t wait for the little hamlet to take shape. Looking forward to future structures. I thought we might be in for a theory time in this episode but I was disappointed. Maybe for the final episode?? Thanks again Mike (and Graeme)
I love it , can't wait for the next video, your dad is awesome, love from Indiana , USA
me too, Evansville
Awesome videos man love . I've watched em all. !!!
You continue to move forward with your skills. I remember when you started and you told everyone that you were just learning . You know more now than 95% of the RUclipsrs out there but you remain humble and continue to research and learn. Thank you teacher.
Great Video
Very nice.
Really great video.series!
Here in Canada we grow grass for garden centers, cut into ten x two foot strips. Technically you could have purchased that and given "Viking Turf Roof House" a truly unique look.
Great Series ~ Greetings From Detroit
love ur content ✅❤️
about time haha just kidding ive been looking forward to seeing the next episode love the vids
Enjoying all the different buildings and styles. Request for a video: Could you take us on a tour of all the different buildings? That is if they are close enough to each other. Keep up the great work.

Your channel is fantastic man ! After watching your videos and the videos of some other channels i want to get out there so badly but i don't really have anyone around me that i know of that has private land that i can use. Hopefully soon i can find somewhere and start learning and using some of these awesome bushcraft skills ! Thank you for the inspiration and keep making those videos :D
You should look into Borge in Lofoten Norway. It is a wood and turf longhouse.
Seeing Mike and Dad working together is always enjoyable.
Hey, going on a bushcraft journey soon, great tips, see you soon
Enjoy!
I love ur vids man
Nice to see.
Love your survival skills. I’m learning a lot.
Mike,
I strongly suggest that you use a Hazel Hurdle as a Waddle and Daub wall under the short roof side of the house! It would be great as a base for the Daub! Also, I would suggest you make the door on that side as well....even if you have to duck a bit to get inside.
It is looking really good and I am eager to see the roof material going on. From the looks of it, I don't think the material around that site would make a decent roof material...and I am curious what you do select to make the roof out of. Would be great if you could roll up turf like professionals do so that you could place a roll on top and let it slide down the roof to cover it.
Keep up the good work...and HI Graeme!!!
Wattle* Ducks waddle! 🦆🦆🦆
Nice to meet you
My name is Minami
An artist.
What a great channel!
I was looking for a channel like this!
Thank you for teaching me the technology
Registered and appreciated.
From Japan
ok looking good
This is well made...
Hey mate have you ever thought of going on the show Alone? I think you would do great 🤙 Great episodes as always.
I'm in the American midwest (central Illinois to be more specific) and I have a few mulberry trees in my yard. I use the rapid growing branches from the mulberry tree the same way they use hazel.
I liketh thee video...matey!!!
So the cool thing here for me is the bond between son and father I hope me and my son are like this so far so good though
Nice. Bet those roof segments took forever to weave and lash together
really nice dramatic music at the beginning- completely getting that Viking feel. love this project!
Great video Mike 👍. Gonna be interesting to see where, you're going to get the turf from.
Have you thought about becoming a venture scout / leader because
I think you’d be a great roll model mike ...
Wow I love how you did the roof... Making them in sections before putting them on had to be easier?? I'm just guessing. Brilliant idea.
