- Scandinavia has Green-Roofed Homes that are like real-life hobbit houses.
Scandinavian turf roofs of the 20th and 21st centuries can be assumed as the historical analogue of modern extensive green roofs or sod roofs.
Turf roof or “torvtak” (in Swedish and Norwegian) is a traditional roof type of Scandinavia. In contrast to an ecological and esthetical purpose of vegetation on modern green roofs, turf was supposed to be a strictly utilitarian and to protect the waterproof layer made of birch bark sheets. It was the common way to construct roofs for timbered houses in Scandinavia up to the end of the 19th century.
Although installation of a green roof usually involves higher upfront costs than a traditional roof, there are many economic benefits that can make up for this.

Grass roof has been one the oldest features of Faroese houses even though not as many use them nowadays, its still used by a lot of people here

Grass roofs can also be found in western and Northern Jutland, Denmark, whereas they are very rare on Zealand (I haven't seen any). Funen and Zealand tend to have thatched roofs if they are not hardburned clay tiles.

I remember back home in Washington, i was driving through lacy and there is a house near the freeway and it had moss on the roof. I just know it wasnt done on purpose just it rained alot also it was near the sound

Beautiful! Love the contrast between the bright green roofs 🍏, the tarry black 🖤 walls, and the lime white 🐻❄️ doors and windows! Also, nice to know that there are natural alternatives to insulation and how to prevent the carbon footprint! However, what about venomous snakes and spiders that can potentially hide and sneak through cracks on the roof and bite owners? No one ever says anything about that! Also, sod roofs sound like a great alternative in countries where there is an abundance of rain, like in Northern Europe! But what about Southern Europe where countries are prone to droughts like Spain, Portugal, Southern France, Italy, Albania or Greece? Thus, an alternative could be megalithic stone wall houses with thatched roofs found in Northern Spain called "teitos" or "pallozas"! But, it would be very hard to convince sophisticated Southern Europeans to switch their fancy city apartments and lifestyles for stone age dwellings in the outskirts of cities!
