  • Join us on this bushcraft trip where we continue building a historic iron age celtic roundhouse using simple hand tools. For part 4 we peel bark off hazel saplings and lash these to the timber frame to make the battens ready for the thatch to be put on. In next episode of the celtic roundhouse series we will be focusing on building the walls to the bushcraft shelter.

LOVE the pegging joinery and the stepladder! You and Dustin and you and your Dad always give good value in RUclips bushcraft videos! I especially enjoy this series because you keep to the same site and use building aids that you have previously developed for other shelters. Bushcraft is more than emergency brush shelters. Woodcraft may be a more inclusive term. At some point, I would have thought about 'birds beak' notches to fit the conical roof members to the circumference of the shelter. Of course, they still would have needed pegging or lashing for extra structural integrity.

That is looking very cool! I'm excited to see the finished project. After watching all 20 seasons/series of Time Team- many times; I've concluded that the BEST primitive permanent structure is a Round House.
Here in the Desert southwest of the USA, the indigenous tribes used the exact same structure, but they dug a pit first, which became the walls, and then added mud on top of the thatch to counteract the winds and sun. The thatch would never survive Tornado Alley here in the states, but add mud or turf to the roof, and they survived quite well.

You guys need to make a shave ladder. Helps with thinning, debarking, or shaping those small pegs or like the hazel rod rafter lashings you showed around the 15 minute mark. Far quicker build and more portable than a shave horse but still very handy.

For the timber that goes into the ground, you may want to char the wood with a torch or with a camp fire so that it will protect it from rot. There are 1400 year old wooden homes in Asia that have used this technique. It's also used for wine barrels.

Fun project. Just found your stuff really enjoying it. Wish I had some woodland to do this stuff. I really want this to work and it will for a while but have a little think about the structure and what the forces are doing. I don't know the weight of the roof or how long you want this to stand for but don't want any thing to fail. A few little things to consider. Use oak pegs if you can. The pegs should hold the joint together not take the load. Regarding the structure. As you load the roof it will try and push your walls out.(a reciprocal roof doesn't have this outward force) You mentioned a triangle in the roof this will be in tension trying to pull them out of your lashings as they are so high up the leverage will be significant from where the rafters sit on the ring beam. Imagine standing on your step ladder on ice with nothing tieing each side together. Maybe consider some tie beams lower down in the roof. Hope this is useful I can trying and explain more if useful. Keep going looking forwards too seeing it complete
