As a child I loved digging in the dirt, building tree forts and basically pretending to "survive in the wilderness" in my parents backyard. Over the years I lost both the time and passion for these sorts of things, but after coming across your channel, and your dad's fishing channel, I have found it again and have made time in my life to get back to nature, creating things from my surroundings. THANKS for including the real bits in the last few minutes (I hope his fingers are okay) as the spontaneous video is great stuff. Remember to set up the camera tripod and help him out now and then. I think it helps it bind more and crack less as it dries because it gives it a bit of glue feeling.. not sure though.. just know its used. And one word... Skynet. The time has come.. Terminator the age of the machines.

I know that ash is used in other mixes so it become more rubbery, or glueish. and do not crack as easilly because it makes the fiber able to move a bit.. But im not sure if that is the reason why its sometime used in mud also. or if it does something else.
We live in North Florida so some of the soil is sand and some is like Georgia clay. My boys and I are now looking for some clay soil. You didn't retire as a teacher, you still are my friend. Thanks!
I have watched in awe at those primitive life videos with the one philipino guy building all this mud house. Ya know... there's pretty much nothing I like better than seeing a hugely difficult project being followed through to completion. You two are incredible. This thing is coming together beautifully-- historic accuracy be damned! Learned some things with my dad as he worked on some home projects, when I was a child. He was never all that good at it, but he got it done. (Home projects, that is-- nothing too fancy). But you two hit the hard stuff-- awesome! And, yes, your dad is a "trooper", as you said in a previous video. He rocks! Well, you both rock.... As I'm watching these videos months after they were posted, I already know you get this done. Never gave much thought to how hard our ancestors had to work to get by. Watching this really brings it home. I do my families genealogy. Lots of English names, into Wales and Scotland. Seeing this series makes me appreciate what they had to make... "me" possible. And, no modern hand tools. I spent most of that video thinking your going to lose your wedding ring somewhere in a deep pile of mud. Your wife won't disappear if you leave your ring at home once in a while. (Nearly lost mine on a beach once. The ring not the wife :) )

Excellent progress with getting the clay on the walls. I hope your dad is getting hazardous duty pay! I think he needs to invest in some safety equipment hahaha. Looking forward to the next video!
Tarp it lads , I work with clay , and if you dry it slowly it’ll stop big cracks , your going to get a few which you can’t stop , but anything big will be ok if it’s dryed slow , the straw is a genius idea , that’ll stop most of the cracks and it’ll last you years and years , you and you fabulous dad are my favourite channels now , such wonderful family memories you are creating, it’s just great
The dung helps glue it together, the protein and ammonia help bind the clay and straw. 1/3 clay, 2/3 sand, then add straw dung mix . Then as it dries you paddle pack it to keep it tight and dense. The important thing is you are having fun doing it!

I would tarp it & then keep an eye on the moisture content whilst it slowly dries out (& wet if necessary). I do enjoy the happy banter that you have with your Dad - golden time! Great that you are telling people how to protect the dried peat soil from catching fire. Those foil use once BBQ trays can also cause devastating moorland fires too. Keep up the hard work - I REALLY enjoy your vids++

My Grandfather always told me that when you Plaster a Wall, make sure that the outside stays moist the longest. He said that it should dry from the inside out and NOT from the outside in, to prevent Cracking. He used to cover the plaster with wet sacking or Newspaper.

THIS. I've done clay work like this before, and yes. If it doesn't dry slowly it's just gonna be a mess and you'll have to redo all that work.

i think ash and limestone is added for concrete, i have no idea if just adding ash would make it stickier but it could be an interesting experiment :)

putting straw into a clay mix is usually called cob. buildings made with cob can last for thousands of years with a good roof.

Mix your clay with horse crap and cow crap .. along with grass as well as the clay . It will hold like cement

I wish that you would bring in your other camping friend also, the gentleman that created the helicopter type of spinning roast. All three of you make a very interesting team. The meal he creates makes my mouth water. The light hearted comedy your father brings is also so endearing, not to mention his dedicated hard work. Your love of the outdoors definitely translates through the media, I get so much enjoyment watching all your projects, please keep up your wonderful videos.
