So 2021 and sat in front of my PC (that's what us 40 somethings still do) drinking some beers and enjoying the music. You can tell she's totally in-tune with the song, accent raises and lowers with how she feels the song needs to be told. Love it!
The greatest difference of this cover when compared to the great original version, was the effect the lyrics had on me. Although I am a huge fan of the original version, I have to say that super Tori has done a great job reflecting the meaning of the lyrics with her voice. Excellent!
Her piano skills and in particular her rearrangement for this song is what I find the most incredible as the original version is not really explicit about the "colour" of the chords (guitar and bass only play fundalental + fifth) And damn it's freaking sexy ! Anyway, love it ! :D
Pianists ive known have always said "oh thats odd" but never elaborated. Thanks for saying whats so different about her composition. Sorry for this being years late
I heard that new version of this song and I needed to hear Tori instead. She really rocks those low 🎹. I remember playing it in piano class and my teacher was like what are u playing. I was impressed she recognized it.
How can anyone be there live and not be captured by this performance. I feel uneasy watching through a screen, as if she’s actively trying to steal my soul. Yet it’s so beautiful and I can’t look away. What a an enchanting woman she is.
It's cool to hear what a Hard Rocking song sounds like when it's mellowed out and played on piano. I'ts like it changes your perspective on how you think about the song as well.
Tori brought the talent and the tension needed for a song that defined a generation. I'm just proud to be apart of it, where all hope died within but we still shine through.
Interesting because when I saw Nirvana in Seattle in 1992 they started playing the Tori Amos version over the speakers, then Kurt cut it off and said “Yeah right”. I remember being really disappointed cuz I love Tori.
It’s amazing how a good cover can change how you feel about a song. I never really thought about how depressing these lyrics are before, since the song is originally so angry.
This is what separates Tori from all other singer's...how she looks at every single person in the audience and makes them feel special or she is singing to them...she always did!!
I had the chance to meet you at Jacobs recording studios in Farnham with my friend Rachel, when I was 15.... Unfortunately I bailed because I was too shy.. One of my biggest regrets 😔

Tori is one of those performers who can truly make the sound of the piano and her voice keep you hanging on each word and note , haunting and beautiful 🙏 she is amazing and love to hear her cover these classic songs.
Now I understand that Bob's Burgers episode with the food trucks...the red-headed songstress grinding lasciviously on her piano chair, breathing heavily. Spot-the-fuck-on!!!
About the same experience as the White Stripes doing Dolly Partons' 'Jolene', but then the other way around. Fascinating, how some can really add other layers to a song by covering it.
In 1992, Tori released a little EP called Crucify. It had 5 tracks on it including 3 covers: Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) Thank you (Led Zeppelin) and Angie (Rolling Stones). The covers are all insanely brilliant and complement Crucify and Winter wonderfully. I'm really fond of her version of Angie.

I remember the single for Crucify when it came out and when I looked at the track listing saw Teen Spirit. I skipped the cd to that track and I was just sent to another place and time with this cover. It was sublime. She is something else.
Always admired Tori's music ability, as a 90's grunge fan I totally missed this until lockdown 2021! So 2021 and sat in front of my PC (that's what us 40 somethings still do) drinking some beers and enjoying the music. You can tell she's totally in-tune with the song, accent raises and lowers with how she feels the song needs to be told. Love it!
Thanks for your love and support to my music, I have you all my fans to be most grateful for 🌹🌹♥️
Fun Fact: Kurt said her version was better than his.
She also does “Losing My Religion” which is also chillingly beautiful and AMAZING and it was actually featured in the movie “Higher Learning”.
Her version is insane ❤
@@nadinejanho❤100%
He also said nirvana would play this version and come out dancing I think in 1992 tour
I love that about him 😁 he was so modest
The greatest difference of this cover when compared to the great original version, was the effect the lyrics had on me. Although I am a huge fan of the original version, I have to say that super Tori has done a great job reflecting the meaning of the lyrics with her voice. Excellent!
Her piano skills and in particular her rearrangement for this song is what I find the most incredible as the original version is not really explicit about the "colour" of the chords (guitar and bass only play fundalental + fifth)
And damn it's freaking sexy !
Her piano literacy is insane. Some of her songs are incredibly odd. Reminds me a ton of early Kate Bush songs.
@@razrv3lc she was always compared to her and alot of people say she ripped bush off
Miguel Marquez nothing more painful than getting yer bush ripped off😱😱😱
How can anyone be there live and not be captured by this performance. I feel uneasy watching through a screen, as if she’s actively trying to steal my soul. Yet it’s so beautiful and I can’t look away. What a an enchanting woman she is.
She looked stunning in the 90s. :)
Great cover btw.
Almost everything was stunning in the 90s...( *sigh*
I love this kind of cover: original, professional and with great personality! Tory Amos Is really a great artisti!! Thanks a lot!!! 🎼❤
It's cool to hear what a Hard Rocking song sounds like when it's mellowed out and played on piano.
I'ts like it changes your perspective on how you think about the song as well.
what an absolute beauty. Amazing cover, i truly miss the 90s.
Tori brought the talent and the tension needed for a song that defined a generation. I'm just proud to be apart of it, where all hope died within but we still shine through.
this is an amazing cover. Kurt Cobain was star struck by Tori Amos just fyi. She captures the metal vibe through her piano.
I imagine that there was a reality where Kurt got with Tori instead of Love and they lived happily ever after
Interesting because when I saw Nirvana in Seattle in 1992 they started playing the Tori Amos version over the speakers, then Kurt cut it off and said “Yeah right”. I remember being really disappointed cuz I love Tori.
@@mentak2593 I think they played it in paris, france 1992
source: trust me bro
Im pretty sure ive heard Kurt saying this version was lame. 99%.
I never wanted to be a microphone so much in my life...
I preferred to be the piano chair!
Noxius Obvious 💀
@@noxiusobvious4239 My thoughts exactly....
Still better than being the tampax in her ...
@@zsuzsannacircleedge8416 Bonnie Prince Charlie likes them more horselike anyway...
If there's ever been a greater cover than Tori doing SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT, then I've never heard it.
If not better it's equal : Norah Jones on Black hole sun....Honey on No one wants an alien...
This! Tori is a true artist and very special talent…her voice captivates and the piano arrangement is just stunningly beautiful ❤️🎼🎵🎹
It’s amazing how a good cover can change how you feel about a song. I never really thought about how depressing these lyrics are before, since the song is originally so angry.
This is what separates Tori from all other singer's...how she looks at every single person in the audience and makes them feel special or she is singing to them...she always did!!
@Me Too ya do realize I'm talking from a personal experience...
Saw her do this in NYC the week before Kurt died. Still one of my favorite covers by anyone anytime anywhere. ❤
From the age of 14 when I first was overwhelmed with her talent... I, still at 43 think she is a musical genius!
Thanks for your love and support to my music, I have you all my fans to be most grateful for 🌹🌹♥️
I had the chance to meet you at Jacobs recording studios in Farnham with my friend Rachel, when I was 15.... Unfortunately I bailed because I was too shy.. One of my biggest regrets 😔
@@MatthewsJez I don’t have time to talk much here, write to me on my (private )WhatsApp , +1 205-607-0152 keep in touch over there
I've always been a huge fan of her and her voice ... Tori makes melancholy sound so pretty and beautiful ... I've thought that a good singer let's you feel their emotions in there songs and for this reason she is truly my favorite female vocalist
Tori is one of those performers who can truly make the sound of the piano and her voice keep you hanging on each word and note , haunting and beautiful 🙏 she is amazing and love to hear her cover these classic songs.
Now I understand that Bob's Burgers
episode with the food trucks...the red-headed songstress grinding lasciviously on her piano chair, breathing heavily. Spot-the-fuck-on!!!
Underrated comment.
Hahahaha! Underrated comment!
Same! Glad to see someone make this comment!
"Oiiiill.. spilllll...."
This is why I love reading the comments. The last sentence S T F O I almost spit out my gum!!!
Epic cover. Potentially the best of all covers!
It's amazing how Tori can make me feel emotions I've never felt before.
This is so immersive. Her audience engagement is so sensual.
I honestly loved Nirvana, but was so over this song until I heard Tori sing it. Beautiful
About the same experience as the White Stripes doing Dolly Partons' 'Jolene', but then the other way around.
Fascinating, how some can really add other layers to a song by covering it.
the only person which felt what curt cobain felt deep in his heart and performed it perfectly

Suddenly I'm a Tori Amos fan
to late
@@cocteautwinscocteautwins523 never too late to be a fan of an artist lol
Such a beautiful voice. Amazing eyes staring through the audience.
When I wanna cry in my bathtub with the candles lit, this version gets all those emotions out. Thank you Tori.
Me too! I love that EP especially Angie
I love her version of Thank you ❤😭😭
Oh, the early 90's when Tori Amos was the sexiest woman alive. My heart was broken by a girl, I had my new driver's license, Tori's "Little Earthquakes" album and Smashing Pumpkins "Disarm" on repeat in my car, Marcus Schenkenberg's abs were everywere and all the guys wanted to look like Nuno Bettencourt in Extreme.
DIsarm.... what a song!! :)
Gorgeous, anyone that doesn't like this have no ears.
As I speak for millions of ladies and gentlemen, you , Mary Ellen, are the MOST SUPERB OF TALENTED TEACHERS!
simply the best. she fueled a generation of singer/songwriters with her light, passion, fierceness, fearlessness, and singularity. Viva Tori Amos!!
Thanks for your love and support to my music, I have you all my fans to be most grateful for 🌹🌹♥️...
i am sure Kurt is enjoying listening to u .. over and over again
RIP KURT ..
He's probably under a bridge in heaven. Doubting himself.
whisperienced actually, that’s false.kurt loved this cover
Too bad it's over when were dead
Greatest cover I've heard in an age! Her voice is really powerful, and still she's a master of soft singing! A rare and admirable combo, that is.
Beautiful woman, beautiful voice.
Wow probably one of the most talented people to walk the earth, this song actually made me cry, am a 50 year old man Tori wtf are you doing to me ❤️❤️❤️
Finally you got a great artist singing a tune with clear lyrics and piano great job Tori
One of the few covers to make my ears happy
Thanks Tori, it's because of you I actually know the lyrics ;)
Still my favourite version of this song...😍😍😍 ...
I agree. The original has been overplayed to infinity.. Nirvana had better songs and this sounds fresher.
This song made me cry!! it's like a teardrop for every stroke of the piano keys !!!
Back in the 90’s, my alarm went off one morning and this is what was playing. I was half asleep and thought I was dreaming it. I became a big Tori Amos fan afterward. Lucky for Pittsburgh, we have a great independent radio station, WYEP
they shouldve had HER perform instead of Lorde at the 2014 nirvana hall of fame. gorgeous performance
I think they wanted to show a new generation of young artists appreciating old ones so Tori was not chosen on the bright side,Lorde is not your average musician, her works are very well-received,especially Melodrama and Kim Gordon,Kurt's friend also performed.
What would Lorde know about Nirvana? Tori would have been much better.
She hasn’t really been good or relevant since the 90s. Every album Tori has made for the last 20 years has been mediocre to awful.
@Dugganworks "After hearing this version, Kurt Cobain refused to ever perform the song again, stating that the way Amos did it was "the way it was meant to be done."
Direct quote, man. Kurt liked Tori Amos and was flattered that she covered one of his songs. He said this outright in an MTV interview. Just because you think Kurt wouldn't like it, don't assume that's the truth.
And who wouldn't be flattered? This is magnifiscent!
I was 20 in 92 and had no clue this beautiful world existed.
First saw this on MTV in summer of '92 I believe while at a basketball camp. Even as a Nirvana teen at the time and not much of a T.A. fan, it stuck. Probably explains why I'm watching it on RUclips 30+ years later. Also worth noting, if memory serves, the mVideo was followed by Criss Cross' I Missed the Bus video..hmmm lol. Good stuff, thanks for post.
This rendition is so beautifully haunting, the way Tori looks out into the crowd also, there's something very sensual about it.
I looked up this video after watching an Amy Lee livestream. I must say, I don't regret it ❤
oh wow wonderful
My mother would harmonize to her voice.
Rrrrrruuuuuubecca

Much love to everyone digging this ❤
Tori isn't just playing the piano and singing awsome, she puts on a show, talking to you and express emotions with her all body, very amazing.
Thanks for your love and support to my music, I have you all my fans to be most grateful for 🌹🌹♥️
The way she slips into the song in the beginning, she changes the temperature of the song; even more haunting, chills.
One word:
Mesmerizing.
Pffftttt.. Someone said Patty Smith was best. Naaaah. Tori Amos.. come on!! Strong strong voice. Tori intensifies it!
Once every year or so RUclips actually suggests something that's really, really good. I mean, god damn, this might be the best suggestion ever.
Out of this world! What an amazing performer, TA!!!
Wow, never realized how pretty the melody of this song is until now.
