      Is a good interpretation, but I never felt much rage from Kurt, much frustration and cry for help instead. And from Tori I feel poetry and expression(I think from her own interpretation of the lyrics and the conection and understanding that comes from experiencing a felt musical piece like this. drawn from own experiences of course.
      I can´t list the number of amazing compositions like this that generated different emotional states on the same chord or verse deppending on my own emotinal state, and every time understanding a little bit more about the artist!.....

    What I love about Tori Amos is even though she is a classically trained musician and a total professional, she always chooses to sing with feeling instead of trying to be "perfect". Her "imperfection" is what makes her genius and better than perfect.

    I have seen this live, just five days after Kurt shot himself and everybody was still in shock about that, me included. When the people realized what she sang, they silently came down from their seats and gathered before the stage. Many cried. She just sang his song in a way that let everybody understand his pains. And we shared that pain and sorrow about his death with her. I will never forget that. You could do nothing but love her at that moment. She showed so much respect and sympathy doing that.

      Big metal fan too, but I liked all types of music and did a lot of spreading out in the 90's. I remember getting into Tori cause one of my friends GF (now wife) was into her and she was playing it one late night after we had been partting and it just moved me hearing her voice that I asked her to play more. Next thing you know we where going to her concert together. We had nothing else in common other than her boyfriend and I grew up in church together (he was actually younger than me). We hardly talk now a days but every once in a while she will ask if I still have my signed Tori poster and I say yep and it's not for sell...lol

    You have to remember Tori Amos was like kinda the muse of late 80s early 90s pop grunge scene. She was everyone’s muse. We all felt her. It’s why she was a good friend to so many pivotal artists of the time. She’s literally a muse. Cobain. Maynard. They all super loved and respected her.

      She's been the shelter of all my main transformings in my early years and my blueprint for the development of my inner artist. She gives me the strength and the courage to face my shadows and to find my own voice and leader inside. It costs her so much, to reflect herself so open in front of public by making music and I hope, that she now is healthy inside, instead, that I'm leaving, because I don't compare with her new sounds. Love you Tori... ❤❤❤❤... and thank you!!!

    As there is a quite a parallel: I recommend checking out Norah Jones version of "Black Hole Sun", which was originally from Soundgarden with Chris Cornell. Both "Smells like Teen Spirit" and "Black Hole Sun" originally had a completely different energy, and both Norah Jones and Tori Amos interpreted the song in their own way and made it their own, rather than just playing a simple cover - and both are amazing singers and piano players :)

    • @BanyanTree1
      @BanyanTree1 2 года назад +29

      It's worth pointing out that Norah Jones' cover was done as the first artist to play Detroit's Fox Theatre five days after Cornell died, which is why it sounds like a dirge and why you could hear a pin drop when she sings "no one sings likes you anymore." The fact that Jones was both aware and approached the song with such artistry and respect means a lot for those of us who grew up with Soundgarden.

    Tori Amos was extremely popular, because she was the true alternative, in an era where "alternative" was thrown around a lot. She was a singer/songwriter, and flowed from classical to current pop, to harsh, almost metallic sounds, to techno. But she was really different from everyone else. Her use of distortion was funny because it was both distorted and clean at the same time. Her voice and style is so unique that it is instantly recognizable.

    Thumbs up for Tori. Thanks for reacting to her....wish more people did. She's probably my favorite female singer from the 90's and this brings back a lot of memories.
    Also, I'm happy that you touched on her abilities as a pianist as I feel this has a lot to do with what makes Tori Tori. Lot's of musicians can play instruments extremely well, but with Tori it seems to be a part of her.

    I was fortunate to see her early on, Under the Pink tour, and I was in the 2nd row! There's an energy to what she does beyond the voice and music, which is magnificent. You could hear a pin drop when she sang, she can hush the crowd with a sweep of her hand. She is such an artist and the audience gives her their full attention. My desert island album is Little Earthquakes, it's all still fresh and new. Wherever I am in life, as I age, I get different meaning.

It leaves you hanging on her every word, leaning forward, as she garners your utmost attention, not wanting to miss a single word. She's just incredible. Thank you so much for covering Tori. She is, of course, well known for being a piano prodigy, and with good reason, but I particularly gravitate to the way she uses her voice is so many creative ways. Her using her breath almost as an extra instrument, her deliberate dynamics, her unique phrasing, and so many more choices she makes in her singing just draw me in. Add to that her physicality with the piano (or pianos; well worth looking up her playing two pianos at once), how she performs with her entire body both in terms of singing and playing but also embodying her characters, and you have one exceptionally mesmerizing artist.

    Tori Amos skillfully, playfully blends a clarity and prettiness of voice with unexpected sounds and challenging raw intensity. To me, it feels siren-like, enchanting and overwhelming. It communicates directly with your limbic system, bypassing rationality and reaching into your soul. I think that Kate Bush does it too. The absurdities and surprises are utterly disarming, but the emotions are forceful and sincere. For me, PJ Harvey is another artist who does that so well. I would love to see Elizabeth's analysis of some of her work.
    Notably, PJ Harvey provides a direct bridge to Grunge with the album Rid Of Me, produced by Steve Albini at the time he was also working on Nirvana's In Utero. Rid Of Me is dark, humorous, vulnerable, aggressive, abrasive and beautiful. Some of her following work was much more accessible, mainstream pop rock, like the album Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea. She then unleashed her full range in avant-garde releases like Let England Shake, a funny, wonderful and terrifying portrait of a nation shaped through a history of conflict, guilt and grief. That evolution of her sound and skills is really interesting.
