I’ll disagree, everyone’s opinions vary and every one has their own taste especially when it comes to music but to me in terms of vocal ability he’s at the bottom of the late 80’s/ early 90’s Seattle scene. I’d take Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, Scott Weiland, Mark Lanegan AND THAN Kurt Cobain. Now I will say after listening to Mark Lanegan’s memoir “Sing Backwards And Weep” I do have a slightly different and improved opinion on Kurt as a person but musically I still have NEVER understood what all the fuss was about especially when you look at all those other bands who were so much better both in terms of musical talent as far as playing their instruments and in particular in terms of vocalists! Now I do like several Nirvana songs, but I never put them in the top 3-4 of the Seattle scene. Since reading Mark Lanegan’s book I have tried to avoid using the term “grunge” since apparently that was a term they all HATED PASSIONATELY!! I forgot to mention another band whom I prefer over them….Candlebox!!
@@MAGA4EVA1986 1 have never heard of candlebox but I have heard of every other band you mentioned. 2 Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder both sound a lot like Kurt Cobain and really aren't that different and both of their hands have very similar sound to Nirvana and in the 90s a lot of those Seattle bands sounded the same. As someone who's been training as a vocalist, fairly relentlessly over the past 15 years, I can tell you that Kurt really was one of a kind, or else, part of a very, very exclusive group. Very unique, very difficult to emulate. Hell of a sound. It's hard to appreciate if you haven't been trying for the past decade and I've got serious oral infrastructure. 0:56 I...... The way he just.... he just looks over to the side and..... I think Kurt Cobain smiling like that is one of the most heart-warming things ever!........ It's all dreary until Kurt looks like he's happy to be alive. I'm a recent fan, by the way. I feel a little embarrassed to admit that I only really took the time to listen to Nirvana when someone turned Nevermind into the SM64 soundfont, but, after that.... I'm a fan for life. As an adult now, I can look at things more objectively, and Kurt Cobain is such a gentle soul, even when it's not at first glance. I wish I was better at not listening to one song over and over(not S.L.T.S., just others and the whole album), but it makes me feel more connected to think Kurt would've appreciated people like me who try to listen to all of a band's music. I like to imagine he'd "like me more" and so forth, but if I got to know him, I'd want to know the Kurt Cobain that was interviewed in front of the Seattle cityscape(one of his last). I'd also be too surprised that he didn't like me for being too much of a square.
It was late 1991 in a club called "Line Club" in Braunschweig/Germany when i first heard this song. It was unbelievable. Never ever had this feeling before hearing a song for the first time. It directly blew me away. Asking the DJ: who is playing this? I HAVE TO KNOW IT! No one was talking about "Nirvana" at this time. It exploded a few weeks later when "Smells like ...." was spreading like a virus. Shortly after i bought the "Nevermind" Album. This is one of the most heard albums of my collection Still kickin' today when i hear it. Gose bumbs immediately...always thinking back to those days. Great times. So sad Kurt ends his life. So good Dave is still alive and kickin' ! Greetings from germany....
My dad lived in Braunschweig in his youth. He said the night life there was great! I also visit Braunschweig sometimes, but I now live near Frankfurt. I enjoyed visiting big cities less and less over the years... but Braunschweig is still a beautiful city!
I had a similar experience except I was in Louisiana at my university and I can show you the exact traffic light I was stopped at when this song came on and proceeded to blow my mind. After recently commenting to one of my buddies about how horrible rock had gotten (Warrant's Cherrie Pie was the example I used) and saying something has got to give. And less than two weeks later I'm at that traffic light hoping the DJ would say who the band was that was that had me cranking my car stereo to the max and headbanging in the middle of a little intersection by our campus. And he did name them and I immediately went and bought Bleach and Nevermind. My favorite band ever since. Later I got to see them at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans for the In Utero tour in December of '93. Four months later he was dead. I was stunned. P.S. I believe the evidence is clear- Kurt didn't end his life, it was ended for him because of a pre-nup, a pending divorce and $50 million motives.
@@jamesrambo7712 well the songs i talk about are mostly the most famous songs of nevermind, he ended up hating them because of how mainstream they became and that they had to play them everynight almost everyday, there was some other reasons but thats the most relevant tho
Of all the different performances of this song I've heard (and seen), I have to agree with you on it being the best one. It's during the early days of the album being released (I think) and what makes it particularly special to me, is how full of positive energy and happiness Kurt looks to be having. Maybe it's because he's truly living out his dreams of entertaining people with music he wrote.
For sure. Like the higher the note they sing the dirtier their voice gets but it sounds amazing and I think it is just a dna thing, I don’t think it can be taught. And nobody can replicate them.
@@ScottishTeeVee I just re-read the "Come As You Are" book recently, and it said one of Cobain's first bands included CCR covers that he sang. The "About A Son" movie soundtrack also includes a CCR song - I've not yet watched the movie (will do so at some point), but presumably it references CCR since they are included in the soundtrack.
@ John Poffenbarger. That is incredible you say that and I was thinking his singing had a hint of CCR. So he was practicing singing CCR in his youth and transferred to his normal singing.
I used to watch The Word back in tbe 90s and saw lots of good bands on there I'd already heard of, Faith no more, L7, Dinosaur Junior ect then one day a band I'd never heard of were playing their first ever television debut of their new song called Smells like teen sprit. It was from that moment on I became a Nirvana fan. Never had I seen such intensity in a musical performance and they way the singer was screaming seemed to reach right into my soul and its been there ever since. I love you Kurt. This is like a different song. The first verses it’s like a surf rock song. The way he uses his favorite guitar mod early on. It’s like a surf rock song but reminds me of Seattle and Olympia- dark and depressing. I love him. I call him grampa Kurt. This was one of the first songs put on my first iPod I heard over and over as a kid too, but this performance hits different.
Hearing the lyrics of the first verse so clearly, and the fact that Kathleen Hannah one of the most intensely misandrist women who has ever been in Olympia herself spray painted the lyrics to the song (have you heard the song White Boy by Bikini Kill?)... I get the feeling this was the later version of the song Seaside Suicide that his aunt ripped up his lyrics for in Burien when he was recording Illiteracy Will Prevail only the experience probably taught him not to ever address suicidal ideation directly again because he thought it would make committing suicide itself more difficult and yet he was completely obsessed with the idea. I’ve heard Courtney Love say the men in his family had a history of suicide, and honestly I can empathize because I lived in WA for almost 10 years and pounding a gram and shooting myself in the face seemed like it would have been a better option at times. RIP KURT & all victims of suicide and hate.
Classic performance! I remember seeing it live after coming back from the pub. I'm glad you left the intro bit about Courtney. Interesting how he changed up the lyrics, too: "load up on guns" instead of "drugs"; "our little tribe" instead of "group"; and, for reasons unknown, a fuck ton of Roger Taylor call-outs at the end! :D

Nirvana still Rocks! Music is timeless ❤️🤘🎤🎸🪕🥁⚡️
Kurt Cobain was the voice of a generation and his Spirit lives on through his music.
Thanks for taking the time to share your memories of that era.
カートコバーンの顔もファッションセンスもしゃがれた独特の声もやっぱり今でも最高!
I've never appreciated Dave Grohl's drumming as much as I do now. 🤩
tbh in all the performances of all 1991 we're able to see how kurt rlly enjoyed to play many songs that 1 or 2 years later he was gonna hate
Why did he end up hating them?
@@jamesrambo7712 well the songs i talk about are mostly the most famous songs of nevermind, he ended up hating them because of how mainstream they became and that they had to play them everynight almost everyday, there was some other reasons but thats the most relevant tho
the stage design in this show in my opinion was incredible and you really can tell it by the screen on their back
I believe that's a Greenacres, you can see some green bleed on Kurt's hair
Of all the different performances of this song I've heard (and seen), I have to agree with you on it being the best one. It's during the early days of the album being released (I think) and what makes it particularly special to me, is how full of positive energy and happiness Kurt looks to be having. Maybe it's because he's truly living out his dreams of entertaining people with music he wrote.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment Patrick😎
nah he was just high asf
you can see the relief on his face the feeling of relief as "we finally did it, our dreams we've worked for- for years."
He’s got a hint of credence Clearwater in his voice where it’s dirty but beautiful and nobody else can replicate.
I have never seen any one mention the hint of CCR, but I can hear what you mean.
The "About A Son" movie soundtrack also includes a CCR song - I've not yet watched the movie (will do so at some point), but presumably it references CCR since they are included in the soundtrack.
he also has alot of inspiration from robin zander.
@ John Poffenbarger. That is incredible you say that and I was thinking his singing had a hint of CCR. So he was practicing singing CCR in his youth and transferred to his normal singing.
Saw him in 93. There was a time I could sing both albums verbatim. When prompted I think I'd be Close!

If only you knew how much we love and miss you. You're still so loved and I wish with all my heart I could tell you this and that you changed my life for the better and I will always be grateful to you for that and your invaluable contribution to music. You truly were a force to be reckoned with and I wish you were here because the world needs you. God I miss you dropping headlines and new songs Kurt. I just.. I miss you existing in the same world the rest of us exist in 😢. You'll always be missed and mourned by those of us who experienced the phenom that was "Nirvana" . You are even beloved by the new generation of young people who never had the same opportunity to live "Nirvana" and experience your impact on the music industry and social growth. You have made new fans and followers of Nirvana even from the grave and that is something pretty special imo. Rest in peace Mr Kurt Cobain. You are part of my most cherished memories from my youth and my childhood. Perhaps i have such a special place in my heart for you because you passed away one week after my big brother passed away. I have cherished memories of our time together watching MTV after school and at night & on the weekends . Another great that I miss may be less significant but he impacted my childhood all the same... Kurt Loder MTV News.. he's the man that broke the news to us about your passing away. I'll forever remember exactly what that felt like. Rest in peace Kurt. I pray that you found the happiness in your afterlife that you could never find while you were still here on earth with us 😢.

there are no three musicians together today that are like kurt, krist & dave
Not a single phone in sight, back when people LIVED IN THE MOMENT!
The lack of cell phones probably helped.
no hate or anything but wdym instead of drugs? the lyrics are legit load up on guns (no hate just wondering)
Cool performance, both the band and audience going hard out despite it being a TV studio rather than a big concert. 🙌🏽🔥
