- Nirvana was set to perform their recent hit single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on the British music chart television program "Top of the Pops." At the time, the show had a policy that required artists to sing live vocals over pre-recorded back tracks. As you would expect, Kurt Cobain and his bandmates would not let this go without having some fun.
What resulted was, and still is, one of the greatest middle fingers and live performances ever -- the band literally made its own shred video.
Cobain opts for slow, exaggerated strums during the few times he touches his guitar, sings an octave lower (he later confirmed he was imitating Morrisey from The Smiths), and attempts to eat his microphone at one point. He also changes some of the lyrics, exchanging the opening line "load up on guns, bring your friends," for "load up on drugs, kill your friends." Dave Grohl hits cymbals and skins at random, doing more dancing than drumming. Krist Novoselic even swings his bass above his head. And despite these ridiculous antics, the crowd goes absolutely insane.

When each performer comes on, you use the settings you decided on for them during the sound check, so there's no need to adjust anything while the show is going on. The reason for the backing track policy was probably wanting to get a performance that sounds just like the album version.
Don't do the show then. He wanted the publicity but be a rebel too. It's fucking pathetic.

I like how it exposes the crowd at these shows are acting. They get random aspiring actors to play a role... So no matter what the band does, they go crazy and act like it's the most intense best show ever.
They’re not actors, just mainly kids bused in from various places. When I was studying film in college they arranged for us to go down there as part of the course.
There were actually fewer people in the crowd than you’d think and they told everyone to pack in tight together close to the stage, although we honestly couldn’t be bothered and just stood at the back of the studio.

I think a lot of artists did this. There’s a Radiohead performance where the guitarists play the guitars the wrong way around and sing into the microphone despite having no singing part in the song. That and Thom Yorke deliberately makes it look fake as shit.
